00:00On July 21, the church celebrates Saint Victor of Marseille, one of the most emblematic martyrs of Provence.
00:12His name is closely linked to the spiritual history of the Phocaean city, of which he is the Patron Saint.
00:19It is the end of the 3rd century, under the reign of Emperor Maximian Hercules, in a Roman Empire that was still largely pagan, where persecutions against Christians were frequent.
00:35Victor is a Roman soldier, but not like the others, he is a Christian.
00:41In a world where every citizen, and especially every soldier, is required to have unwavering loyalty to the god of Rome, Victor chooses another, deeper loyalty: that to Christ.
00:56Arrested for refusing to participate in the pagan sacrifice, Victor is brought before the authorities.
01:04We try to make him bend, we flatter him, we threaten him, we hit him.
01:10But Victor does not give in. Better still, when he is brought before the idols to be bowed down, he knocks them down with a kick, a radical gesture, almost provocative, but full of faith.
01:26This gesture signs his death warrant. He is tortured, crushed between millstones, a powerful, symbolic image of his crushed but intact resistance.
01:38Then he was thrown into a dark prison, like so many other Christians of his time.
01:44There, however, he did not stop proclaiming the gospel. He even converted his jailers.
01:51Finally, the sentence is handed down: beheading.
01:55Victor died around the year 290, a martyr for the faith.
02:01But his story doesn't end there.
02:04Christians secretly collected his body and buried it on a hill overlooking Marseille.
02:12On this site, a few decades later, one of the oldest Christian abbeys in the West was born,
02:19the Abbey of Saint-Victor, founded in the 10th century.
02:22For centuries, it was a spiritual beacon, a center of prayer, study, and monastic influence throughout southern Gaul.
02:35Saint Victor then became a protective figure of the city of Marseille, invoked in times of war, plague and doubt.
02:43His silent courage and loyalty to the end still inspire today.
02:52He reminds us that true strength is not found in weapons, but in faith,
02:59not in conquests, but in fidelity to God, whatever the cost.
