00:00Why are you calling the Marlins team hotel to tell them
00:03that you're going to hit them the night before you're going to hit them?
00:06And by the way, why are you hitting them?
00:09Like this, you're mad.
00:11I get it.
00:13Casey Schmidt got hit.
00:14Elliott Ramos got hit.
00:15I understand that you're mad, so you're going to come after the Marlins?
00:21You're going to come after the Marlins.
00:23This is something that, like, they even said it.
00:25They're like, yeah, this has been going on for a few weeks.
00:27Well, it wasn't all the Marlins.
00:29They're just the ones who are here right now.
00:32And I would like to know, this is always my question.
00:36You and I have done this for years now, ever since you wanted to dot Aaron Judge.
00:41Which they should have.
00:41For not signing with the Giants.
00:43What happened to that first at bat?
00:45He hit a homer.
00:46But what happened today?
00:49A three-run homer.
00:50Well, the guy you hit, he didn't hit a homerun.
00:52No, he didn't.
00:53But the next guy got a base hit, and then the next guy got a homer.
00:56Like, that's kind of my point.
00:57My point is, is if you want to hit somebody, go ahead, explain it to me, though.
01:03How is it going to be productive?
01:07What's it going to achieve?
01:09If your answer is, well, it's just going to make me feel less frustrated.
01:13Okay.
01:14That's fine, I guess.
01:16Then you're projecting.
01:16But, like, what is actually productive for your clubhouse and for the scoreboard in dotting
01:23a Marlin today?
01:24I think...
01:25And I would answer, today it blew up in your face.
01:28Well, you did it in the wrong time.
01:29And I would think that the reason why you had Bob Melvin go out and say what he said,
01:34and Logan Webb said what he said, is because the hitters were clearly frustrated.
01:39And if you're a hitter, and you get three guys hit, you had Jung-Hoo Lee get hit, and then
01:44Dom Smith got hit by a curveball, and then Casey Schmidt got hit by the very next pitch,
01:49the batters are a little fed up.
01:51So, as a pitching staff, you do kind of have to have their back, because if the hitters are
01:56frustrated, and they are, and they're not only frustrated because the ball is hitting
02:00them and they're not hitting the ball.
02:02Right now the ball's hitting them more than they're hitting the ball.
02:05But the frustration is still there.
02:08And you're Casey Schmidt, and you're locked in, you're yachted in, you've been hitting
02:12great, and now you get your hand hit, and you may have a fracture, and you're mad, and
02:17so you get in that clubhouse, and it's palpable, and the pitchers are like, okay, we got you,
02:22Casey.
02:23We got your back.
02:24And honestly, that's the only way you can have their back.
02:27I hear you, and you are 100% correct, but my issue is with the Giants' hitter's anger.
02:33Like, you're not mad at the Marlins, and you're not mad because you got hit by a pitch.
02:39You're mad because in this series, before today, you had 10 hits in two games, and almost
02:45all of them were singles.
02:47And you were hit by pitch four times.
02:49Yeah.
02:49And they were hit by pitch zero times.
02:51Yeah.
02:51So that's part of it, too.
02:52Right, but you wouldn't be mad at those four hit-by-pitches if you had been getting some
02:56hits and winning some games.
02:58But you're not.
02:59You'd be less mad, but I'm with you.
03:00One for 1,000 with runners in scoring position.
03:04That's why you're mad.
03:05That's not Logan Webb's fault.
03:07It's your fault.
03:09That's the issue I have.
03:11The issue I have is with any human being on the planet who gets mad at other people when
03:17they're actually mad at themselves.
03:19And that's what I think's going on here.
03:21The Giants' hitters are frustrated with themselves.
03:24So now we're out here screaming and having hitters' meetings and behind closed doors,
03:30hey, how come you won't have our back?
03:32How come you don't have our back?
03:34Dude, you're kidding me?
03:36Logan Webb hasn't had your back?
03:38This offense hasn't had Logan Webb's back his entire career.
03:43Score a run.
03:45Get a hit.
03:46Stop worrying about getting hit on the wrist, and how about drive the ball into a gap more
03:52than once a week?
03:54That's why you're mad?
03:55There's no question that that's why you're mad.
03:59You're not mad at the Marlins.
04:01My God, you're mad at your stats.
04:04That's the issue right now.
04:06I do think that there's part of it where you're also mad at getting hit by the pitch,
04:10but I'm with you, and today they were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, which makes
04:16them 6-for-33 over the last 5, which quick math tells me that that's below 200.
04:22And it's better than what it's been before that.
04:24Correct.
04:25I mean, 2-for-9 today, and the one thing that they're not doing, and I'll use a football
04:30analogy, because we always talk about complementary football, where the offense has the ball for
04:3514 plays in 8 minutes, and then the defense goes out fresh, and they get a stop, and, you
04:40know, when the defense is not great, the offense picks them up, and vice versa.
04:44The Giants right now are not playing complementary baseball, where you get a good outing from
04:48a pitcher, the offense can't hit.
04:51You get a bad outing, and bad bullpen, like today, well then the offense hits, but the
04:56pitching didn't hold up their end.
04:58So, the complementary nature of this Giants team over the course of this homestand hasn't
05:04really been there, and that's where you start to get frustrations.
05:06Would you guys feel differently if it didn't result in three runs?
05:12If they just, two outs, if you're going to hit somebody, that's when you hit somebody.
05:15Two outs, nobody on.
05:16I agree with you.
05:17And then Birdsong got the next out.
05:19Well, here's what I'll say, because you and Shasky agreed on this, Dibs.
05:22I actually don't agree that that was the wrong time.
05:25I think that that was, in theory, the right time, but it blew up in your face.
05:30But I have an issue with it either way, because you told everybody last night.
05:33Like, that's what's stupid to me.
05:35I don't, like...
05:36But by telling everybody last night, you are the first to hit somebody, you know you're
05:41going to get a warning, they're going to get a warning, and then if the Marlins
05:44retaliate, they're the ones that get ejected.
05:46Right, but the Marlins, like, you put them on edge before you needed to.
05:50You didn't need to let them know that today was going to be one of them days.
05:54You didn't need to do that.
05:56And they did that, and the Marlins played this game as if they were all ticked off.
06:00They played this game like a playoff game.
06:02They're pimping home runs, they're slapping bats over their knee, they're getting in
06:07Wilmer's floor as his face.
06:09I mean, the Marlins, this is the most action I've seen from a Marlins game in five years.
06:13Why do you think that is?
06:15It's because Bob Melvin was on in their hotel room being like, yeah, we're going to throw
06:19at you tomorrow because we're kind of annoyed at the last three weeks of our lives, but
06:23you're the ones who are here.
06:25Like this, I mean, honestly, this is classically, you had a bad day at work and went home and took
06:30it out on your family, and they're like, what the hell's the matter with you?
06:33And you're like, I don't know, well, you're here.
06:35My boss isn't here.
06:36You are, so I'm going to yell at you.
06:39Well, you called home first and said, you better be careful when I get home.
06:44When I get home, yeah.
06:46Hey, honey, how's your day?
06:47I'll tell you what.
06:48In an hour, when I get through traffic, I'm going to be mad.
06:51Did you cook dinner?
06:52Because when I get home, I'm going to tell you that it's overcooked.
06:56No matter what.
06:57And then we're going to fight about it.
06:58And I'm so mad when I get home.
07:00At me, you'll see.
07:02You'll see when I get home.
07:03You called your shot.
07:04And to your point, I think it's the telegraph nature that is the silliest to me because,
07:10you know, Grandy, if they just would have gone out and not made comments and then gone
07:14out and did what they did, first inning, you dot a guy, you probably still get both teams
07:19warned, and you're probably in the same situation.
07:22Maybe, if you do it right, maybe you don't even get warned if you happen to hit a guy
07:27in the first inning because these things happen.
07:30Baseball players get hit by pitches.
07:31Yeah, but you almost want to be the team that gets warned because then if anyone else
07:34retaliates, it's them that gets punished for you.
07:37You don't get punished.
07:38But the point that I have always made through the years, you retaliate by hitting the ball
07:45in the gap.
07:46You don't retaliate by hucking the ball at the other team.
07:49Yeah, well, that's off the table for this team.
07:50All it does is start a rally.
07:53That's all it usually does.
07:56Or placate you and your own emotions.
08:00No one's ever been able to explain to me what dotting someone does other than placate your
08:05own emotions.
08:07I'd reject this.
08:08Oh, no, it knocks people off the plate.
08:10Well, did it?
08:11Did it scare the Marlins?
08:13Were they like, ooh, ooh, Hayden Berg's song's thrown inside.
08:17We better not get comfy in the box.
08:19They just scored 20 runs in 20 hours at Oracle Park.
08:26It didn't make them uncomfortable at all.
08:28It got their attention.
08:29That's what it did.
08:30He did it with Hayden Berg's song, which is what I was saying.
08:32Well, he throws hard.
08:34He doesn't throw as hard as Rodriguez.
08:35And you know what?
08:36If you've got a guy throwing a buck two...
08:38Rodriguez wasn't even available today.
08:40Fine.
08:40You've got a number of different guys who can throw high, hard heat.
08:44That would maybe get you off the plate.
08:46And yes, it placates more than just your emotions.
08:50If you're a hitter on that team and you've been hit four times in the series, including
08:54three times yesterday, and you have had it up to here, then you want somebody to get
09:00dotted.
09:00You want somebody to feel like you feel.
09:02So there is that, and there is value in that.
09:05It's a risky thing.
09:06Is there?
09:07I think there's emotional value, sure.
09:09Yeah.
09:09Like, if you're Casey Schmidt, and you didn't play today, and you had an x-ray on your hand,
09:14and I don't believe that it showed a fracture, but your hand hurts.
09:18Yeah.
09:18You got a big old oven mitt of a hand because you got hit, and you can't play, and you've
09:23been hot, as hot as grease.
09:25Okay.
09:26And now you can't play.
09:27You probably feel a little bit better.
09:29Yeah.
09:30Okay, great.
09:31So now everybody's kumbaya on their plane to Chicago after getting completely housed
09:36by the Marlins for three days.
09:38You know when their next off day is, by the way?
09:41Do you know when their next off day is?
09:42It's probably the All-Star break, right?
09:44It's freaking July 10th.
09:46They are about, they do not get an off day here.
09:49They're in Chicago tomorrow night.
09:52Four-gamer with Arizona starts Monday.
09:54Back to Sacramento for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after that.
10:00Then immediately home for Philly and the Dodgers with one off day between now and the All-Star
10:06break.
10:07That's it.
10:08That's the next time they get a day off.
10:11So this is all coming at them hot and heavy.
10:15And so, dude, they didn't need their emotions to be placated.
10:20They needed a win.
10:23Here's Bommel last night with John Shea calling the Marlins Hotel to let them know that we
10:30got action on Thursday.
10:32No, it doesn't feel great.
10:33I was looking at the hit-by-pitch numbers the other day.
10:36It's not like we're extreme, but it seems like here recently we've been getting hit by
10:41some pitches and some of our key guys.
10:42So that doesn't feel too good, no.
10:44Anything you can do about it with your pitchers coming back?
10:47Well, not something I certainly want to speak about, but obviously we need in situations
10:52to protect our guys, too.
10:55Yeah, not something you can speak about.
10:57John, you're an experienced reporter.
10:59We don't handle our business that way.
11:01That's not how I choose to do it.
11:04We're going to handle that by having better at-bats and trying to win the baseball game
11:09tomorrow.
11:09But then, yes, go out and dot them if you want.
11:12Don't tell them about it.
11:14I'm with you.
11:15I love Bob Melvin because he, like Steve Kerr in many ways, will give you a straight answer.
11:20It's not something that we go around talking about, but we need to protect our guys.
11:28We need to protect our guys.
11:30And how do you protect your guys?
11:31Do you have them go up there in like an iron suit?
11:35No, we throw out the other team.
11:37That's how we protect them.
11:38It's crazy, man.
11:39I don't know too many times when I've seen a team have a press conference to let everybody
11:44know that there's going to be a benches clearing incident the next day.
