00:00All right, Dibs, take a listen.
00:01You tell me what your kind of reaction is.
00:04Okay.
00:04So Jonathan Papelbon is a former Red Sox reliever.
00:07He's a current Red Sox analyst and also apparently a half-crazy person
00:14in the minds of many of our listeners after a good solid 17 minutes
00:20of a Papelbon journey yesterday right here on Willie and Bibby.
00:25So I asked him, based on the comments he was making,
00:28because he was all about like, oh, he wouldn't go to team functions
00:31and I couldn't get him to do an interview.
00:33I was like, hey, Pappy, is this guy like, are you saying he's a bad teammate?
00:39I do.
00:39He wasn't willing to conform to what the Red Sox needed.
00:44And when you're the highest paid player and your company
00:48or your team needs something, I think it's up to that person
00:53that they have to do what's best for the team.
00:57Am I in that clubhouse?
00:59No, I'm not.
01:00Do I hear little riffs and stuff about what's going on?
01:04Yeah, here and there.
01:05But I do know for 110% fact that John Henry was not happy with Raphael Devers.
01:14And John Henry solely made this decision.
01:17All right.
01:18John Henry, of course, the owner of the Red Sox.
01:19Yeah, yeah.
01:20And Jonathan Papelbon's boss.
01:22Yep.
01:22Yep.
01:23Which is how you must take all the comments at all times
01:27about when somebody's speaking from the Red Sox perspective
01:30and he's being paid by the Sox.
01:33So you got to take that with more than a grain of salt.
01:36Probably one of those big old salt shakers full of salt.
01:39But, yeah.
01:40I mean, he's not in the clubhouse.
01:44And so he's heard rumblings and he's heard some things.
01:48Well, I got more pappy.
01:50Sure.
01:50You need some more pappy?
01:51A little bit.
01:52I think you need some more pappy.
01:53No, I don't think the Red Sox care anymore.
01:55I think the biggest concern was getting rid of them.
01:59Getting rid of someone who, when we ask him to do something,
02:04rebukes everything that they ask him to do.
02:07I can honestly tell you that as long as he's been here,
02:12he hasn't been a part of any team functions.
02:15And there's the team and then Raphael Devers.
02:21And you cannot win, I don't care in what league,
02:25when you don't have all 25 players all pulling in the same direction.
02:30It only takes one guy to be pulling in a different direction
02:33for a team to go down.
02:34The biggest concern for the Red Sox was getting this dude off the team.
02:40Right.
02:40Get off my plane.
02:42So he goes out there and he rakes on the regular,
02:45helps you win a World Series,
02:47and because he didn't go to the blood drive in Pawtucket,
02:51now he's a bad guy?
02:53905 OPS.
02:55Right.
02:55Their best player.
02:56Sure.
02:57Just a ring and was raking.
02:59Raking this year.
02:59Right.
03:00And so we got the off days at the food bank,
03:03and, you know, darn it, we'd love to have you out there,
03:06Raph, but he doesn't show up,
03:08so now he's a bad guy and he's a clubhouse cancer.
03:10That, to me, feels a little bit like he's carrying the owner's luggage
03:15with that comment.
03:17Jonathan Patton.
03:18We got bonus Pappy?
03:19No, that was it.
03:20That was all the time.
03:20We got more, but that's enough.
03:23Okay.
03:24Yeah.
03:24That's enough.
03:25There's plenty.
03:26Yeah, there was more stuff.
03:28There's more stuff.
03:29We had a cell phone go in and out.
03:32A lot of people really locked in.
03:34I even got a text from the lovely Christy on this one
03:37and a text on our text line literally about 10 minutes ago about this one.
03:41A lot of people locked in on this phrase
03:43when he referenced statistical stats.
03:48Yeah, it sounds redundant.
03:49Statistical stats.
03:51Yeah.
03:51Not baseball stats, statistical stats.
03:54And I heard him use the word, and I think it was rebuke,
03:58and he meant rebuke.
03:59Yeah, rebuke.
04:00I thought he said rebuke.
04:01Maybe.
04:02I wasn't sure.
04:03I don't know.
04:04The tempo and the cell phone was a little bit like it.
04:08I think it was a struggle to put more than six words at a time together.
04:11Players to players, I think the Giants got the better end of the deal
04:15with what you're just talking about, statistical stats.
04:19See?
04:20I mean, they did.
04:23I mean.
04:23If you're just talking about statistical stats.
04:26What if we're talking about players who play?
04:29Or ballers who ball?
04:30Or what if we're talking about the blood drive in Partucket?
04:33Right.
04:33Then the Giants didn't get the better end of the deal.
04:36He didn't want to go to team function.
04:38Nope.
04:39We got a lot of functions out there.
04:40We're out here trying to go to team function.
04:42We are.
04:43And he didn't go to those functions.
04:44He didn't go to those.
04:45Yeah.
04:46The Giants had a team function today at 2.30.
04:48Ralphie Devers went to that.
04:49What's crazy is, and you pointed this out to me as it was getting underway
04:53and we were listening and chatting that, and they said that the whole team was there.
04:57Okay.
04:58I'm really glad you brought this up.
04:59The whole team.
05:00So the team function was, let's go meet our new teammate.
05:03This has never happened before.
05:04I want everybody to hear what Dibbs just said.
05:07That has never happened in the history of Oracle Park.
05:13You had an introductory press conference for a player,
05:17and the whole team showed up to the press conference.
05:22So if you want to know why it sounded kind of like a State of the Union address,
05:27where like after half of the answers, they'd be like, yeah!
05:32And you're like, is that Susan Slusser?
05:35What is going on back there?
05:36Extra bags going crazy.
05:39Pabbs is like, I love this dude!
05:42We love you!
05:43Ralphie!
05:44Yeah, that's not the media.
05:46That was the flipping team.
05:49That doesn't happen.
05:51Barry Bonds showed up.
05:53The team showed up.
05:55That doesn't happen.
05:56That's not the way big league ballplayers act.
06:00But it's what happened today.
06:01Yes.
06:02Just one cynical comment about that.
06:05Well, they're all there anyway, because they got a game tonight.
06:08Yeah, but they don't do that.
06:09Well, and by the way, they don't have to go from, like, I'm in the cage at 203,
06:15and it's like, I'm in the cage.
06:16I'm working on my process.
06:17I'm in the lab.
06:18No, they all stopped what they were doing, towel snapping, pusoy dose, whatever they were doing.
06:24Towel snapping.
06:24Towel snapping.
06:26They're playing pusoy dose in the clubhouse.
06:28All right, guys, last hand.
06:29We've got to go see Rafi.
06:31Checking to see if their shower shoes got any fungus on them.
06:34Yeah, all that stuff.
06:34Yeah, you know, ballplayers stuff.
06:37Yeah, just, you know, wiling away in the afternoon, getting ready to play a ball game.
06:42Checking through all your different cell phones to see which girl you want to text tonight.
06:47Maybe you're sliding into somebody's DMs on IG while you're on the commode.
06:52Look, I actually don't even know, you know, through all our time doing this, if you ask me,
06:58what's the normal time that a ballplayer shows up for a 645 game?
07:02I don't know.
07:02I think they're usually there by 2.30.
07:05I think.
07:06Yeah.
07:06You know what I mean?
07:07But I don't know that that's, like, always the case.
07:12I don't know if there's a specific time.
07:16You know, it might have to do with who needs treatment also and what your process is.
07:20But I'm not going to diminish it.
07:22I get what you're saying.
07:23It's not like, oh, wow, they walked upstairs.
07:25But that was definitely a message.
07:28That was a sign.
07:29And the Red Sox yesterday went on, in my opinion, the offensive of a little bit of a minor smear campaign on Rafi Devers.
07:39And I think that this was the Giants' answer.
07:41This was the Giants' answer to, hey, we're the Red Sox and we're going to win more games now because he's gone.
07:48And we're going to send Pappy at you.
07:50And Pappy's going to tell you that the only goal here was to get this awful cancer off our team.
07:55Well, the Giants' messaging today was, open arms.
08:00You damn well better believe that we think we've got a great teammate.
08:04And, oh, by the way, go ahead.
08:06Ask him the question that you all want to ask him.
08:09Hey, Rafi, where are you going to play?
08:12And Rafi looked at everybody in the room and said, wherever the bleep the Giants want me to play.
08:18I'm here to give my 100%.
08:20I don't put any buts.
08:22They're the men in charge.
08:24I am here to play wherever they want me to play.
08:26Boom.
08:27I interpreted it as, I'm going to play wherever I want to play.
08:31But I guess the...
08:33Lost translation.
08:35Yeah, a little bit.
08:36Rafi actually said, I'm the boss.
08:38Right.
08:38I make the most money.
08:40I'm here longer than all of them will be.
08:43And I play where I want to play.
08:45I'm Batman.
08:45Yeah, my contract is guaranteed.
08:48My name is Buddy.
08:49I'm nice.
08:50My name is Buddy.
08:53Exactly.
08:54Why are you calling me Rafi?
08:55My name is Buddy.
08:57I'm Batman.
08:58My name is Buddy.
09:00A slight tinge of frustration from Buddy Heels.
09:03A slight tinge of Napoleon Dynamite, actually.
09:06Pretty good.
09:06It's incredible.
09:07Anyway, speaking of the great Alex Pavlovich, he just sent out a tweet that I think we'd all like to hear.
09:13How about this?
09:14Bob Melvin did finally get asked in the dugout the Wilmer Flores question.
09:20And here's his answer.
09:22Bob said Wilmer will start at first base tomorrow night.
09:26And also said this will allow them to help keep Wilmer more fresh.
09:32And in fact, give him some nights off to mix in with his starts in the field.
09:37So, in other words, instead of DH-ing every night, how about if it's like first base three times a week or four times a week?
09:45And then, on the other nights, we can have you off entirely, but we also have you as a weapon, as a pinch hitter in the late innings.
09:52Because Casey Schmidt will continue to be the starting third baseman until Matt Chapman returns.
10:00So, there I think we now have all of the answers with regard to how this is all going to lay out for the Giants with the addition of Devers.
10:07Yeah, it's Devers, get up and get ready to play first.
10:10And when you're ready, when we think you're ready, you're playing first.
10:13And Wilmer, you're back to DH.
10:15And then, when Chapman comes back, I do think that it's either a second base battle.
10:20Or, like you said, Casey Schmidt, super sub.
10:22And, you know, maybe Fitzgerald needs a day.
10:24And so, you play second today.
10:26And, well, Domus never takes a day unless you force him to.
10:29And Chapman's kind of the same.
10:30So, you can pop Casey over at first as well and, you know, give Wilmer a day.
10:35There's a lot more optionality now with what you have.
10:39I mean, I think, you know who this is really good news for, and we're just getting to know him.
10:42But it's Dominic Smith.
10:43When this trade happened, I'm like, oh, that guy's going to be gone here in about three days.
10:48But now, I don't think that at all.
10:51Because I think Dominic actually can play some outfield, too.
10:54So, he can almost be a backup option out there.
10:57Backup first baseman, good bat off the bench.
10:59Coach late in games.
11:01I think the players now that are facing being sent down, like when Matt Chapman returns,
11:07you're looking at Christian Koss.
11:08And also, Gerard Encarnacion, you're on the clock.
11:13If Wilmer Flores is going to be an off-the-bench option late in the innings,
11:17I would imagine you won't be.
11:20So, those are the guys now that I think are looking at maybe a short stint until Matt Chapman returns.
11:26I don't want to part with Encarnacion's 318 OPS.
11:32318.
11:32Or maybe you do.
11:33Perhaps.
11:34I mean, it's a small sample.
11:35Yeah.
11:36But he's put some crap on tape here in a short amount of time.
11:39I mean, he really has.
11:41And he's going to be off 620, guys.
11:42So, it really means it인이 a lot cooler than Matt Chapman 아니ongs.
11:44But he's going to see him at the end of the break.
11:47Actually, I'm sorry.
11:47And I don't mind.
11:49If would be listening to Matt Chapman Zone, you're going to be on your team.
11:50scissors door up to one side stop sun screen.
11:50I'll see you next time.
11:51It's not enough.
11:52You're going to be on your team.
11:52And guess terry was going to be an if.
