00:00The crossover is brought to you by Abundant Life Weight Loss.
00:02They know the secret to losing up to one pound of fat every day.
00:05Go to AbundantLifeWeightLoss.com.
00:08And now joining us from the Laughing Monk Brewery, Willard and Dibbs.
00:14Hey, John. Hey, guys. What's going on?
00:15Hey, boys.
00:17Come on, guys. Come on.
00:19You didn't tell us you wouldn't be here today.
00:21Yesterday.
00:23You weren't supposed to be here, man.
00:25You weren't supposed to be here.
00:26That's not me, dude.
00:27I should have watched you.
00:28Willard, you're right. Go ahead, Dibbs.
00:29Yeah, we're going to be on a little bit of a field trip.
00:32But, you know, yesterday the crossover, there was so much going on,
00:35I didn't get a chance to pop in and let you know what my plans were for my life.
00:40I miss you, buddy.
00:41Can I hear about that?
00:42What I miss?
00:43I don't like missing the crossover.
00:45The rest of our day, forget that.
00:46But I don't like missing the crossover.
00:48What did we miss?
00:50What did I miss?
00:51I'm trying to remember.
00:52Giant talk.
00:53Giant before you.
00:54Well, the one thing I remember is, and I threw this out as a buzzer beater,
00:58and the question was, would Willie Adamas hit a home run in the Rocky series?
01:05Okay.
01:05I started with Guru, and he gave a classic, hell yeah, yeah.
01:08Hell yeah.
01:09Then we went to Stiney.
01:10No.
01:12No.
01:13I said, no chance.
01:15And then I went to Grandy, and Grandy gave up, I guess.
01:19I mean, these are the answers I would have guessed.
01:25Those are the answers I would have guessed.
01:26Are you profiling the crossover?
01:28Yes.
01:28Wow.
01:28I will.
01:29100%.
01:30I would have shown that to you first, and had you guess what the guesses were.
01:34It's time to play guess the guesses.
01:36Yeah.
01:37Yeah.
01:37Those were the guesses, and then Adamas comes up and just, you know, devours one,
01:42and he's back.
01:43Willie's back, folks.
01:44So, Stiney, so what do you have to do now?
01:46You have to hop on one leg to get to the car, or what did we put on this?
01:52No.
01:52There was no bet involved.
01:54Unfortunately.
01:54That's too bad.
01:55There's a couple lame listeners that actually think I care, that I said no chance, and he
02:02did, but that was a, I'm getting grief back here a little bit, a little bit, because I
02:11forget how I said it, I didn't predict the Giants were going to come back and win with
02:15four runs, but I just felt like the game's not, wasn't over last night against that team
02:23in that stadium, and then, I guess, particularly after Schmidt homered, I was thinking, all
02:31bets might be off here.
02:33And I was on the other end, after the Rockies bullpen for damn near four innings, what, seven
02:38strikeouts, I'm thinking, not an A.O.
02:41Dibs and Willard, but like, this is going to be hard.
02:44They're bringing in their closer, and then the magic happens.
02:47Shout out to Irvin Johnson.
02:49Nice.
02:49Again.
02:50Well, that building, the game, like Giants fans know this better than anyone, the game
02:55is never, ever, ever over, and that team this year, as we have learned, is the worst team
03:01that has ever put on cleats, ever.
03:04It's the worst, and then, but I love the way you're, even with all that, you're still calling
03:09it magic, because I was thinking about this, can you think of anything, like any Bay Area
03:15sports scenario that could cross your mind that's more unlikely than Wilmer Flores tying
03:22the game in the ninth inning with an infield hit?
03:25My God.
03:25Like, give me something that makes less sense than that.
03:32Do you know what I mean?
03:32Maybe TJD hitting a three.
03:34Right, like Quentin Post from 80 feet.
03:37I mean, that's what that was.
03:39Wilmer Flores with an infield hit is not on anyone's bingo card.
03:45Dude, and I told Stoddy and the listeners, guys, the tension, every pitch, and Flynn was
03:50living and dying with every pitch.
03:52I didn't have a dribbler with a bingo card.
03:55So when it happened, I didn't have that as an option.
03:58Well, and that dribbler, and the Rockies had a guy who tried to bunt for a hit, and he's
04:05really, really fast, and, you know, Kisner comes out and grabs it and pivots and fires
04:10and throws him out, and, you know, Schmidt with an unbelievable double play starter at
04:15third, so the defense, even without Bailey and Chappie, the defensive plays that they
04:20made with a couple of backups were as important as the rally.
04:23Well, and I got to tell on myself, because as you guys know, the reason I wasn't here
04:28yesterday is because my stepdaughter-to-be graduated from high school, so congratulations
04:34to Callie Kai-Farnsworth.
04:36She is Boise State-bound, and we were at dinner.
04:42We were at dinner as this thing's coming down the stretch, so I didn't experience any of
04:47this live.
04:48I've gone back and watched it all now, but the way I experienced the Wilmer Flores hit
04:53was like we do when we're kind of, like, holding our phone down below the table level,
04:59you know, and just kind of peeking at it, like, what's going on?
05:02And so I thought that that was a line drive to left field, as far as I was concerned.
05:08I'm like, man, Wilmer did it again.
05:10Clutch Wilmer, base hit in a big moment, and imagine my shock when I got home an hour later
05:16to find out that it was an infield dribbler that he legged out.
05:21I had no idea that that's the way that went down.
05:24Well, and here's the other thing that I used for my defense on not thinking it was over.
05:32And I'll be honest with you, I didn't have the scouting report on Agnos.
05:37I didn't.
05:38Believe it or not, I didn't.
05:39But nevertheless, they're going into the ninth, and I'm thinking, all right,
05:44Rockies are going to bring their closer in.
05:47How often has he pitched?
05:49They got 12 wins.
05:51Like, every time he goes out to win a game, I bet it's like pressure that no other closer feels.
05:59So I was thinking, eh, their closer's probably going to have trouble because he doesn't close a lot.
06:04Yeah, and, I mean, the pressure's there because they don't know how to win.
06:11Right, exactly.
06:12Even though you're facing a team in the Giants that they don't do four runs in an inning.
06:17And I just did a quick search.
06:20How many innings do you think it had been since the Giants scored four runs in an inning?
06:26Oh, God.
06:27I don't know how you come up with that number, but how many times have they done it this year?
06:30I think I know.
06:32I think I know.
06:33But I don't know the exact date, but it was the game before they started 32 runs in 16 games.
06:42Was that the Wilmer 3-Homer game?
06:44I want to say they scored nine runs in that particular game.
06:48You're exactly right.
06:49That's the Wilmer 3-Homer game.
06:50The answer is 207 innings.
06:52Wow.
06:53They beat the A's 9-1.
06:54Yep.
06:55And Steiner, you're right, they went on that long stretch.
06:57And they had a couple of three-run innings, which, whoa, where's the champagne?
07:02Let's party.
07:03And then last night, you needed four.
07:05And you don't do four runs in an inning, yet the Rockies are so bad.
07:10And you got to feel for Agnos and the other guy who came in after him who's equally not very good.
07:17Man.
07:17You see a team like that, and you can't help but expect them to do what they did, which is just find a way to lose.
07:23Mark, let me just ask you this, too.
07:26Because I felt like it was coming through the television screen.
07:32And I don't know when it started.
07:33Maybe it started right at Schmitz-Homer.
07:35But I felt like it was just oozing through the screen that, oh, my God, the Rockies are really going to have trouble closing this out.
07:44You can just tell.
07:46At least once or twice a year at Coors Field.
07:49I, like, again, I didn't watch this thing live, but I know what you're talking about.
07:53I can remember, in fact, Duvall had one of these games there a couple of years ago.
07:59And it was when we were doing doubleheaders that were seven innings long.
08:02Remember those ridiculous things?
08:05And I think he gave up a walk-off homer to Charlie Blackman.
08:08This was two or three years ago.
08:10And there are games at Coors Field where the second you look at them in the ninth inning, you're like, I don't like the way this looks.
08:17Like, it just appears like it's nothing but holes in the entire outfield.
08:23And if they just put the bat on the ball, it's automatically going to be a hit.
08:27It happens a few times a year.
08:29And so, luckily for the Giants last night, this one went on their side.
08:34I will say this, though, and I don't not, like, you know me, boys.
08:39I do not do Debbie Downer.
08:42I don't do it.
08:44I'm against it as a rule.
08:46But I'm very, very worried.
08:49Oh, about Chapman.
08:51I was just going there, Willard.
08:53I was going to do it.
08:54I'm telling you from the inside out, the organization clearly felt at the beginning of the year, there are two positions on this diamond we can't replace.
09:08We can't do it.
09:09We do not have anybody to fill in for the left side of our infield.
09:15And if one of those guys goes down, we're in trouble.
09:19And I know people will feel a little differently now because we've watched Adamas struggle at such a level.
09:24But the bottom line is, is they just do not have, they don't have any lengthy replacements to hold things together on the left side of the infield.
09:34It's wonderful to get a ninth inning comeback and win at Coors Field, but I'm really, really worried about this injury.
09:40No, I can appreciate that, Will.
09:41And, Dibs, when I left you, it was 10 days, right?
09:44And we kind of were like, God, nothing to see here.
09:46And then Susan Slusser sends out that tweet, and it might be 30.
09:50And, Stiney, to that point, I told you the thumb or whatever's going on holding the bat.
09:54But, Will, it's for you to keep it real because that was, it's not devastating, but if you're sitting there and you feel like they can't replace a guy that's going to miss a nice stretch of the games, that was a downer, man.
10:07Not what you said, just that injury.
10:10Yeah, it's a big-time downer, and I actually reached out to a friend of the station, Dr. Nirav Pandya, and just said, hey, you know, hope I'm not bugging you, but based on what you've seen, what's going on?
10:23He's actually in Belize right now, yet he responded, and he said, sounds like it's probably his collateral ligaments, usually 10 to 14 days, but the bigger issue might be the bone bruise as far as his return to play.
10:39So, a couple of ligaments in the fingers, the collateral ligaments in his fingers, but also a bone bruise where, I guess when you jam it like that, where the fingers meet the hand is where you get the ligament damage and the bone bruise.
10:52And he actually also said that it sounds like he's seeing the same doc who operated on Steph Curry's fingers a few years back.
10:59So, this is the best hand guy in the business, even though his last name is Shin.
11:05And it's so funny, Stibbs.
11:07Thank you, Stiney.
11:08Very nice.
11:09I got an eye roll from the boss, but who doesn't understand comedy?
11:12Tell him we say hello, but I went NBA when I saw Chapman.
11:16He was in real pain when he dove back into first, but then he stayed in the game, and I go, that's just an NBA.
11:21You know how they always act like they're dying, nothing to see here, and then vamoose, you get this news, it's heavy.
11:28It is real heavy.
11:29I mean, don't even just think about it in terms of the bat either, like how many games has this guy saved over at third base?
11:36And I know Casey Schmidt has always been thought of as a glove first player, so he's not going to embarrass himself over there.
11:44He might even make some great plays.
11:46I know he made some good plays yesterday, and he hit a homer.
11:49So that's wonderful for one day at Coors Field.
11:53But this was already a lineup that we've spent weeks talking about, struggling, and now throw this into the mix.
12:02If I'm Buster Posey, I'm not waiting for July to look for a deal.
12:07That's what I'm saying.
12:08You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco, an Odyssey sports station
12:14in the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey app.
12:19Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios, Laughing Monk, righteously brewed in San Francisco.
12:24And, you know, any time you win, what, six straight games by one run,
12:29what often happens, guys, is the plays that sometimes get you beat don't get you beat.
12:37And the one I'm talking about, I just want to ask you what you thought of it,
12:40was when we're talking about the bottom of the eighth, the triple by Hunter Goodman.
12:46When I saw it, I thought, he could have, he might have, Ramos might have been able to catch that.
12:52Would have been a tough play, but I thought it was catchable.
12:56Yeah, catchable, yet, you know, when you have a guy like Ramos in the lineup,
13:02he's not in there for his defense.
13:04So you can't look at a player like Elliot Ramos and think that's a play he should make.
13:09And we were talking yesterday, Grandy and I, about defense runs saved as a metric.
13:14And Ramos is one of the lower guys on the team, as is Willie Adamas.
13:19And, you know, the two guys who are number one and two on the Giants,
13:23neither one of them played yesterday.
13:24And that's, you know, Chapman and Bailey.
13:26And so your defense is only as good as the offensive players that you need to play.
13:32And so for Ramos, yeah, you'd like to maybe think that he could make that play,
13:37but that's not really why he's in the lineup every single day.
13:41Yep.
13:42Let me see what else do I have written down.
13:45Oh, you know what I'd like to see a stat on?
13:47How many times you've been in a one-run game, and then in the bottom of the eighth,
13:54a team scores two, and you win anyway.
13:58You know what I mean?
13:59Like, if it's a one-run game at Coors Field, you think you got a shot.
14:05When they get two in the eighth, you're probably thinking,
14:08well, even if they're pretty lousy, they're going to be able to get out of this one.
14:12And then the Giants end up scoring four.
14:15Yeah, I'd have to look at those numbers.
14:17I don't know if that is a stat that you can absolutely find.
14:21But when you have a team like Colorado with a sub-200 winning percentage,
14:26those are the teams that go ahead and do just that.
14:29You pile on a couple of runs, and you still find a way to lose.
14:33Man.
14:33Yeah, they're like, I mean, if you really want to take out of this question,
14:37Stiney, there shouldn't be baseball in Denver.
14:41That's my take.
14:42I'm not kidding.
14:43Not out Clint Hurdle.
14:44I'm not kidding.
14:46It's a nice city.
14:47I don't mean anything against the wonderful people of Denver.
14:50It's a major league-worthy city.
14:52There shouldn't be baseball there.
14:54You can't play baseball there.
14:56They're never going to win.
14:58Like, you can't.
14:59Well, they made the World Series once.
15:01They made the World Series once.
15:02Yes.
15:03They made the World Series one time.
15:05Super quirky.
15:06You're never going to get another pitcher to sign there ever again.
15:09And pitching wins in baseball.
15:12Mike Hampton will be the last.
15:13I mean, it just doesn't work.
15:15Again, it's nothing against anyone.
15:17I just don't think that you can tailor a team to work in that ballpark
15:21and then have that be a team that works in other ballparks.
15:25Doesn't make any sense.
15:27Doesn't make any sense.
15:28And games are never, like, what you're throwing out there, the game.
15:32How many times have we seen something whack-a-doodle happen to end a game there?
15:37Like, the Giants alone, it feels like it happens four times a year.
15:42Yeah.
15:42So, I just, yeah, I think that that, like, it's a completely different game there
15:47than it is anywhere else.
15:47So, it sounds to me like, you know, you look at Oracle Park and, to me,
15:51you build around pitching and defense.
15:53You're saying, in Colorado, you can't just build around hitting.
15:58No.
15:59Like, how's that going to take you into the playoff?
16:02Like, you have to be able to pitch, and they can't get a pitcher.
16:04Like, whatever we think about how free agent hitters won't sign here,
16:08double it, and that's pitchers and the Rockies.
16:12Who is the one pitcher, oh, God, it was like eight, ten years ago,
16:17he signed there as a free agent, and he was pretty good,
16:20but he got there, and then he wasn't as good, clearly.
16:22It was Mike Hampton.
16:23That's right, thank you.
16:24Yeah, I just said it about three minutes ago, but anyway.
16:27Less than that, but yeah.
16:28And it's a lot more than ten years ago, is my sense.
16:32I'm not sure what year it was, but, yeah, he's the last one
16:36who's ever going to sign there.
16:39Wow.
16:39Like, they just, they will not go there.
16:43Everybody in the league knows it.
16:44It's obvious, but, yeah, not happening.
16:47What did I miss with Hampton the first time?
16:49They said it, and you didn't listen.
16:51It's not I didn't listen.
16:52It said I, you're like, what's his name?
16:55And I had just said it, like, two minutes prior, but that's okay.
16:58Well, you didn't hear it.
17:00Yeah, yeah, it's okay, Stiney.
17:02We're men.
17:02We don't listen to each other.
17:03It's fine.
17:05That's a four, Guru.
17:0633 years of Rockies baseball, five postseason appearances,
17:11and based on my math, that's not very good.
17:1528 out, five in, and I mentioned the One World Series 2007,
17:20and it was Broom City.
17:22And I actually said that yesterday, Mark.
17:24I said, if you're a Giants fan in Denver, you show up tomorrow,
17:28yesterday, with a broom.
17:29Wow.
17:29Like, game one, Broom, let's go.
17:32That didn't look good until the night.
17:34Yeah, exactly.
17:35And then I'll sit there in the lab, and I'm like, how do I feel?
17:38I need a baseball cigarette.
17:40And then our guy, Grandy, this is why I love Twitter.
17:44I look at his tweet, and he says, I don't know whether to be more impressed
17:47by the Giants' resilience or the ineptitude by the Rockies.
17:51Oh, my God.
17:52And that just captured everything.
17:55Like, Raleigh, fingers, don't walk anybody.
17:58Make them hit it.
17:59But he walked two guys.
18:02Mike Hampton signed in the Rockies 24 years ago, Stiney.
18:05And listen to this.
18:07Listen to this now.
18:08At age 27, he leaves the Mets, and at that point,
18:12he had never had a year outside of, like, a few starts as a rookie in Seattle.
18:19But he had never had a year where his ERA was north of three.
18:22Ever.
18:23He goes to Colorado for his age 28 season.
18:26He makes the all-star team with a 5.41 ERA.
18:32The next year, his ERA is north of six.
18:36They get rid of him.
18:37He goes to Atlanta.
18:38ERA goes right back below four again.
18:40You can't pitch there.
18:41You can't play baseball there.
18:44You know, one guy, Willard, I remember that the Rockies had
18:48who came there to pitch was a guy named Mike Hampton.
18:52I don't know if you remember Mike Hampton.
18:54Let me see if I can find some stats.
18:57Let me see if I can find his name.
18:58Yeah, he was a big, big name.
18:59No, what about Jimenez in 2010?
19:05Ubaldo?
19:06Yes, Ubaldo.
19:07What about him?
19:08He was lighted out, I think, that year.
19:10Yeah, I mean.
19:11Finished third in the Cy Young, Mark, getting the game.
19:13Yeah.
19:14That's the year that they had their lowest team ERA ever of 414.
19:19And how'd that work out for you?
19:21Probably dead ball.
19:22Yes, but you still only went 83 and 79.
19:25Yeah.
19:26Hey, I need to run something by you two.
19:28Just my opinion.
19:28Can't play baseball there.
19:29So we got another bet on the show.
19:31We had the great Javi Lopez join us at 11.
19:34And Willard, the bet is, Dibs, that three giant pitchers might make the all-star game.
19:39I got Webb and Ray for sure.
19:42And Rodriguez or Ubaldo, you say what to that?
19:45I say that.
19:46I take the under on the three giant pitchers.
19:49Well, I mean, it's either going to be the under or it's going to be even.
19:53So you can't win that bet.
19:54You can't take the over.
19:55It's certainly not going to be four.
19:57Rodriguez in a tough spot because.
19:59He's been filthy wheel.
20:00No, no, no.
20:00He deserves it.
20:01But it's like nondescript, right?
20:03There's no stat to throw out there.
20:05There's no saves.
20:06There's no wins.
20:08There's no, so like somebody's going to have to, the manager of the National League
20:15All-Star team, which I believe will be Dave Roberts, is going to have to overwhelmingly
20:20be like enamored with Randy.
20:23And he's young.
20:24He's young.
20:25So there's that thought that, you know, sometimes they're like, ah, give it to the older guy.
20:29Randy's going to have more opportunities.
20:31What about Doval, though?
20:33The actual close.
20:34Probably not.
20:35I mean, he just got the gig.
20:36Uh-oh.
20:37Yeah, he just got the gig.
20:38He spent the first number of months as not the closer.
20:42I mean, look.
20:43The Phillies had eight All-Stars last year.
20:45Like, the whole team was on there.
20:47Yeah, but you're asking for four pitchers from one staff.
20:51Yeah, man.
20:51They didn't like it.
20:52No, no, no.
20:53They're all deserving.
20:54I really hope Randy makes it.
20:57I really hope Randy makes it.
20:58Well, he's probably been the best reliever in baseball.
21:01Yeah, deserving's not going to win the bet, though.
21:04And that makes me feel good.
21:06All right, guys.
21:07That's going to do it for me.
21:09It is?
21:09Yeah, it's a Wednesday.
21:10Can we keep Guru for a little while?
21:12That's up to Guru.
21:13I got an appointment.
21:14I'm right behind him.
21:15All right.
21:16But you guys have fun down there at Laughing Monk.
21:19We will.
21:19Tell the boss and Lucas.
21:20I don't know if you've been here, but this place is spectacular.
21:25It's fantastic.
21:26We're in the back room, and if I swivel around, there's a legitimate lake behind us.
21:33We've got a view of the water here.
21:34Nice.
21:35We've got water.
21:36Yeah.
21:37The food's incredible.
21:38Awesome.
21:38It's open, bright space.
21:40Like, you know when you walk into a restaurant, you're just like, ooh.
21:43Yeah.
21:44I like it in here.
21:45Yeah.
21:45That's kind of how I felt when I walked in here.
21:47Nice bar.
21:48Beautiful dining room.
21:49Let's go.
21:50Back area.
21:51Patio.
21:52Pond.
21:53Tim Jordan.
21:54I believe the boss has officially left.
21:56That's really good.
21:57Set my clock for 30.
22:00I took my headset off, so I don't even know.
22:03But I do got to go, guys.
22:04Don't interrupt.
22:04Don't be rude.
22:05I'll make my way down there pretty soon.
22:06Maybe this weekend.
22:07Yeah.
22:08It's okay.
22:08I'll make my way down there from the studios at 95.7.
22:11If you take your headphones off, then stop talking.
22:13Oh, my God.
22:14What a moron.
22:14It's called radio.
22:15Good Lord.
