We travel to Shifnal to visit Idsall School, for our Love Your School festure.
Transcript
00:00We're here for our Love Your School and this week it's Idsall School and we're with Headteacher.
00:05Introduce yourself, Madam.
00:06Thank you. I'm Michelle King. I'm the very proud Headteacher of Idsall School here in Chiffnall,
00:12in Shropshire.
00:13And how long have you been here?
00:14This is my fifth year as the Head in Shropshire.
00:17Yeah. And so what's so special then? People that don't know Idsall School, what's going on here?
00:23This is a unique place. It's a place that builds more than just knowledge.
00:27It grounds our whole young person into a young adult.
00:33We have a seven-year journey from Year 7 all the way through to Year 13 with some fantastic results
00:40and a million fantastic young people that work across our school.
00:46And we're going to be checking out the Yule Road Quad area. What is the Yule Road Quad area?
00:51Yeah, that's a designated base for Year 7. We call it the shore.
00:54It's where Year 7 have their own classrooms, their own toilet block, their own social space
01:00where the rest of the school don't go.
01:03So they can come out into the rest of the school if they so wish
01:06or they can use their own designated space where most of their lessons are taught there.
01:11They have the same tutor.
01:12So we've reduced the number of teachers they have.
01:16Therefore, a bit primary model really as we make that transition to ease that transition through
01:21to coming into a big secondary school with 15 teachers every week
01:26to shortening that to six or seven teachers across the week and a designated area for them to relax in.
01:33We're with some pupils at IDSL and we're with Olivia and Andrew and Sam.
01:41Cool.
01:41And what's the school like then, guys?
01:43What's kind of some of the highlights for you?
01:46You know, favourite lessons and so on.
01:47Well, IDSL is amazing.
01:50I loved it ever since I came in September.
01:53I was going to go to a private school, Birchfield School,
01:56but I chose to come in and I'm really thankful to come because the sport here is amazing.
02:01Yeah, yeah.
02:02What sort of sport is it you're into yourself then?
02:04Football, golf and a bit of mountain biking.
02:08Okay, good stuff.
02:09Yeah, yeah.
02:10What's your team then, buddy?
02:11Who do you support?
02:12I support United.
02:13Ah, well, we'll move on then.
02:15And what about you?
02:16Any favourite lessons or things that stand out?
02:19I really like PE and maths and the sport here is, like, really good.
02:23Yeah?
02:24I'm really into netball and football.
02:26Okay.
02:26And you like maths.
02:28I don't know how many people say that.
02:29There wasn't many people when I was at school saying that.
02:31So what would you like to do when you leave school?
02:33Is it something involving maths or...?
02:35I'd like to be a secondary PE teacher.
02:38Would you?
02:38Yeah.
02:38Cool.
02:39What about you, boss?
02:40I like history, PE.
02:46Yeah, yeah.
02:46Because history's really interesting and you're going back from the past and it's, like, really good.
02:53And PE is very interesting as well.
02:58And I'm really liking sport, like football, basketball, tennis, golf.
03:04Golf?
03:05They do golf?
03:06Wow.
03:06Oh, okay.
03:07We never did that at my school.
03:08That's great.
03:09And come on, Olivia.
03:10What are you liking being here as a pupil?
03:12Like, I like English and art because art, like, I get to make, like, different stuff.
03:19And, like, English, I'm really good at that.
03:21Okay.
03:21Well, in English, what sort of stuff do you like to do?
03:24Is it kind of, you know, is it writing stories, poems?
03:26Or is it the reading side of it?
03:28Yeah, it's, like, poems.
03:29Okay.
03:30Interesting.
03:30Great stuff.
03:31And what would you like to do when you leave school?
03:32I'd like to be a therapist.
03:34A therapist.
03:35Great.
03:35What about you, buddy?
03:36What would you like to do?
03:37I'd like to be a professional footballer or just be, like, a counsellor.
03:43Yeah?
03:44Good stuff.
03:45And, Seb, did we ask you what you'd like to do when you leave?
03:47Go on.
03:47No, but I would like to stay in sports or, like, be a physio or something.
03:52Okay.
03:52But if that doesn't happen, I'd like to go and finance while my mum works.
03:56Yeah?
03:56Well, when you grow up and you know what's going on, you'll become a Wolves fan.
04:02No.
04:03I'm really joking.
04:04Well, thank you, guys, and thank you for telling us about your lovely school.
04:09How many pupils do you have here, then?
04:11We are just short of 1,300 students in the school, so it's a large secondary school.
04:15Yeah.
04:16And sports, you're quite keen on.
04:18Any particular types of sports that you're kind of doing well in?
04:21Yeah, we excel in lots of sports, to be honest.
04:24Even today, they're off to the athletics track to bring home some medals there across the school.
04:30We do extremely well in football, basketball, netball.
04:35We do the full range of sports.
04:37We have some really nice facilities that you'll see in a little while,
04:41which are permanently used in school and outside of school.
04:45We run lots of camps here outside of school as well, so our extracurricular is actually vibrant.
04:51We have over 103 clubs a week running across the school for students to access from reading,
04:59from homework clubs to chess to just social games or breakout in terms of a well-being social area.
05:08And then, well, the trips and the quality of the sports is endless.
05:14And it's your prom night tonight, isn't it?
05:16It is, it is.
05:17We have 160 year 11s hitting the Swapshire Golf Club tonight.
05:24That will be a special event.
05:26It's always well-celebrated and well-received.
05:29They really enjoy that time.
05:31And it's really good to see them grow into those young people that they are.
05:35Great stuff.
05:36Well, thank you for inviting us to your school.
05:38And we'll take a look around.
05:40Well, it looks good, lads, but what is it?
05:44What are you making?
05:45Swiss roll.
05:46Swiss roll?
05:47Yeah.
05:47Ah, so what flavour jam's going in it?
05:50Strawberry.
05:51Sorry.
05:51Oh, you didn't contemplate sticking a raspberry in, going a bit side-swiping?
05:57No.
05:58Plenty of jam, though, yeah?
05:59Yes.
06:00So who's going to be eating this?
06:01You guys or mum and dad?
06:04Me, the whole pan.
06:05Yeah, yeah.
06:06Now, I know you're saying that, but I know by the time you get home, Martha, it'll be gone.
06:11If you're anything like my boys.
06:13Do you enjoy your cooking, then?
06:14Yeah.
06:15Yeah, yeah.
06:16I like the cooking.
06:17Oh, yeah.
06:19It's quite relaxing, isn't it, really, once you get settled into it.
06:22So is there any particular dishes that you think you're not too bad at doing or help mum and dad with?
06:30I mean, you do the packing.
06:32Do you?
06:34Oh, wow.
06:34Great stuff.
06:35Fair play to you.
06:37What about you, bud?
06:39Well, just mainly do the eating.
06:42And what, do you fancy being a chef, then, potentially, when you're older?
06:46No, but it's a good school to have, so you don't have to buy back in.
06:49Yeah, yeah, very true.
06:50Very true, young one.
06:52Cool.
06:52Well, we'll let you carry on, lads.
06:55So we'll be Freddie Dixon.
06:56Hello, Freddie.
06:57Hiya.
06:58And some of your artwork here, Freddie.
07:00Just talk us through on what you've done and what the inspiration is for it.
07:03Um, so I chose three artists.
07:07Um, these are all combining one of them or two of them together.
07:12Yeah.
07:13So it's a different, like, replicate their style sort of thing.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Ah, so go on then.
07:18So for example, this one with the bike, who's this influenced by?
07:20This is influenced by Garth Bailey, who's done a lot of horse racing, bike racing, especially
07:28the Tour de France and those main ones.
07:30And that's a big passion of yours, isn't it, cycling?
07:32Yeah, definitely.
07:33Cool.
07:34And this red car here, what's going on here?
07:36So this is based off Mark Sutton's work.
07:40Um, he focuses a lot on motorsport and track cars and sort of that stuff.
07:45Yeah.
07:46So I thought I'd base that piece off his work because it's a picture of my own.
07:50Um, that one combines Garth Bailey and Mark Sutton together.
07:57Got it, yeah.
07:57So the car's done as Mark Sutton and the background's all Garth Bailey's loose.
08:02Ah, I can see, yeah, now you're pointing it out, yeah.
08:04There's two different styles, you know, yeah.
08:06And then this is a combination of Garth Bailey and a second artist, Mia Fulan, who does motorsport
08:15art, it's a lot of motorsport art with lines in the background to create the feeling and
08:20movement.
08:21Well, you're obviously very much into your sport and you're obviously a very creative
08:24person, so any ideas what you'd like to go on to do when you leave school?
08:28Um, probably something maybe in the design industry, maybe architecture or maybe even
08:35automotive design.
08:36Yeah.
08:37Something like that.
08:37I'm not 100% sure yet though, so.
08:40Well, great stuff, mate.
08:41Well, if the standard of your artwork here is anything to go by, you'll do well going forwards.
08:45Thank you for sharing it too, it's Freddy.
08:46Thank you very much.
