We're here for our Love Your School and this week it's Idsall School and we're with Headteacher.
00:05
Introduce yourself, Madam.
00:06
Thank you. I'm Michelle King. I'm the very proud Headteacher of Idsall School here in Chiffnall,
00:12
in Shropshire.
00:13
And how long have you been here?
00:14
This is my fifth year as the Head in Shropshire.
00:17
Yeah. And so what's so special then? People that don't know Idsall School, what's going on here?
00:23
This is a unique place. It's a place that builds more than just knowledge.
00:27
It grounds our whole young person into a young adult.
00:33
We have a seven-year journey from Year 7 all the way through to Year 13 with some fantastic results
00:40
and a million fantastic young people that work across our school.
00:46
And we're going to be checking out the Yule Road Quad area. What is the Yule Road Quad area?
00:51
Yeah, that's a designated base for Year 7. We call it the shore.
00:54
It's where Year 7 have their own classrooms, their own toilet block, their own social space
01:00
where the rest of the school don't go.
01:03
So they can come out into the rest of the school if they so wish
01:06
or they can use their own designated space where most of their lessons are taught there.
01:11
They have the same tutor.
01:12
So we've reduced the number of teachers they have.
01:16
Therefore, a bit primary model really as we make that transition to ease that transition through
01:21
to coming into a big secondary school with 15 teachers every week
01:26
to shortening that to six or seven teachers across the week and a designated area for them to relax in.
01:33
We're with some pupils at IDSL and we're with Olivia and Andrew and Sam.
01:41
Cool.
01:41
And what's the school like then, guys?
01:43
What's kind of some of the highlights for you?
01:46
You know, favourite lessons and so on.
01:47
Well, IDSL is amazing.
01:50
I loved it ever since I came in September.
01:53
I was going to go to a private school, Birchfield School,
01:56
but I chose to come in and I'm really thankful to come because the sport here is amazing.
02:01
Yeah, yeah.
02:02
What sort of sport is it you're into yourself then?
02:04
Football, golf and a bit of mountain biking.
02:08
Okay, good stuff.
02:09
Yeah, yeah.
02:10
What's your team then, buddy?
02:11
Who do you support?
02:12
I support United.
02:13
Ah, well, we'll move on then.
02:15
And what about you?
02:16
Any favourite lessons or things that stand out?
02:19
I really like PE and maths and the sport here is, like, really good.
02:23
Yeah?
02:24
I'm really into netball and football.
02:26
Okay.
02:26
And you like maths.
02:28
I don't know how many people say that.
02:29
There wasn't many people when I was at school saying that.
02:31
So what would you like to do when you leave school?
02:33
Is it something involving maths or...?
02:35
I'd like to be a secondary PE teacher.
02:38
Would you?
02:38
Yeah.
02:38
Cool.
02:39
What about you, boss?
02:40
I like history, PE.
02:46
Yeah, yeah.
02:46
Because history's really interesting and you're going back from the past and it's, like, really good.
02:53
And PE is very interesting as well.
02:58
And I'm really liking sport, like football, basketball, tennis, golf.
03:04
Golf?
03:05
They do golf?
03:06
Wow.
03:06
Oh, okay.
03:07
We never did that at my school.
03:08
That's great.
03:09
And come on, Olivia.
03:10
What are you liking being here as a pupil?
03:12
Like, I like English and art because art, like, I get to make, like, different stuff.
03:19
And, like, English, I'm really good at that.
03:21
Okay.
03:21
Well, in English, what sort of stuff do you like to do?
03:24
Is it kind of, you know, is it writing stories, poems?
03:26
Or is it the reading side of it?
03:28
Yeah, it's, like, poems.
03:29
Okay.
03:30
Interesting.
03:30
Great stuff.
03:31
And what would you like to do when you leave school?
03:32
I'd like to be a therapist.
03:34
A therapist.
03:35
Great.
03:35
What about you, buddy?
03:36
What would you like to do?
03:37
I'd like to be a professional footballer or just be, like, a counsellor.
03:43
Yeah?
03:44
Good stuff.
03:45
And, Seb, did we ask you what you'd like to do when you leave?
03:47
Go on.
03:47
No, but I would like to stay in sports or, like, be a physio or something.
03:52
Okay.
03:52
But if that doesn't happen, I'd like to go and finance while my mum works.
03:56
Yeah?
03:56
Well, when you grow up and you know what's going on, you'll become a Wolves fan.
04:02
No.
04:03
I'm really joking.
04:04
Well, thank you, guys, and thank you for telling us about your lovely school.
04:09
How many pupils do you have here, then?
04:11
We are just short of 1,300 students in the school, so it's a large secondary school.
04:15
Yeah.
04:16
And sports, you're quite keen on.
04:18
Any particular types of sports that you're kind of doing well in?
04:21
Yeah, we excel in lots of sports, to be honest.
04:24
Even today, they're off to the athletics track to bring home some medals there across the school.
04:30
We do extremely well in football, basketball, netball.
04:35
We do the full range of sports.
04:37
We have some really nice facilities that you'll see in a little while,
04:41
which are permanently used in school and outside of school.
04:45
We run lots of camps here outside of school as well, so our extracurricular is actually vibrant.
04:51
We have over 103 clubs a week running across the school for students to access from reading,
04:59
from homework clubs to chess to just social games or breakout in terms of a well-being social area.
05:08
And then, well, the trips and the quality of the sports is endless.
05:14
And it's your prom night tonight, isn't it?
05:16
It is, it is.
05:17
We have 160 year 11s hitting the Swapshire Golf Club tonight.
05:24
That will be a special event.
05:26
It's always well-celebrated and well-received.
05:29
They really enjoy that time.
05:31
And it's really good to see them grow into those young people that they are.
05:35
Great stuff.
05:36
Well, thank you for inviting us to your school.
05:38
And we'll take a look around.
05:40
Well, it looks good, lads, but what is it?
05:44
What are you making?
05:45
Swiss roll.
05:46
Swiss roll?
05:47
Yeah.
05:47
Ah, so what flavour jam's going in it?
05:50
Strawberry.
05:51
Sorry.
05:51
Oh, you didn't contemplate sticking a raspberry in, going a bit side-swiping?
05:57
No.
05:58
Plenty of jam, though, yeah?
05:59
Yes.
06:00
So who's going to be eating this?
06:01
You guys or mum and dad?
06:04
Me, the whole pan.
06:05
Yeah, yeah.
06:06
Now, I know you're saying that, but I know by the time you get home, Martha, it'll be gone.
06:11
If you're anything like my boys.
06:13
Do you enjoy your cooking, then?
06:14
Yeah.
06:15
Yeah, yeah.
06:16
I like the cooking.
06:17
Oh, yeah.
06:19
It's quite relaxing, isn't it, really, once you get settled into it.
06:22
So is there any particular dishes that you think you're not too bad at doing or help mum and dad with?
06:30
I mean, you do the packing.
06:32
Do you?
06:34
Oh, wow.
06:34
Great stuff.
06:35
Fair play to you.
06:37
What about you, bud?
06:39
Well, just mainly do the eating.
06:42
And what, do you fancy being a chef, then, potentially, when you're older?
06:46
No, but it's a good school to have, so you don't have to buy back in.
06:49
Yeah, yeah, very true.
06:50
Very true, young one.
06:52
Cool.
06:52
Well, we'll let you carry on, lads.
06:55
So we'll be Freddie Dixon.
06:56
Hello, Freddie.
06:57
Hiya.
06:58
And some of your artwork here, Freddie.
07:00
Just talk us through on what you've done and what the inspiration is for it.
07:03
Um, so I chose three artists.
07:07
Um, these are all combining one of them or two of them together.
07:12
Yeah.
07:13
So it's a different, like, replicate their style sort of thing.
07:16
Yeah.
07:16
Ah, so go on then.
07:18
So for example, this one with the bike, who's this influenced by?
07:20
This is influenced by Garth Bailey, who's done a lot of horse racing, bike racing, especially
07:28
the Tour de France and those main ones.
07:30
And that's a big passion of yours, isn't it, cycling?
07:32
Yeah, definitely.
07:33
Cool.
07:34
And this red car here, what's going on here?
07:36
So this is based off Mark Sutton's work.
07:40
Um, he focuses a lot on motorsport and track cars and sort of that stuff.
07:45
Yeah.
07:46
So I thought I'd base that piece off his work because it's a picture of my own.
07:50
Um, that one combines Garth Bailey and Mark Sutton together.
07:57
Got it, yeah.
07:57
So the car's done as Mark Sutton and the background's all Garth Bailey's loose.
08:02
Ah, I can see, yeah, now you're pointing it out, yeah.
08:04
There's two different styles, you know, yeah.
08:06
And then this is a combination of Garth Bailey and a second artist, Mia Fulan, who does motorsport
08:15
art, it's a lot of motorsport art with lines in the background to create the feeling and
08:20
movement.
08:21
Well, you're obviously very much into your sport and you're obviously a very creative
08:24
person, so any ideas what you'd like to go on to do when you leave school?
08:28
Um, probably something maybe in the design industry, maybe architecture or maybe even
08:35
automotive design.
08:36
Yeah.
08:37
Something like that.
08:37
I'm not 100% sure yet though, so.
08:40
Well, great stuff, mate.
08:41
Well, if the standard of your artwork here is anything to go by, you'll do well going forwards.
08:45
Thank you for sharing it too, it's Freddy.
08:46
Thank you very much.
