My name's Tom McAlevey, I'm deputy head for quality of education here at Thomas Adlam
00:06
School.
00:07
And what's so special about your school sir?
00:09
We cater for a wide variety of intake from a wide catchment of North Shropshire, we're
00:16
very fortunate to have a lot of 11-19 provision including a very rare but unique state boarding
00:24
opportunities which is fantastically run by Mr Irwin and we're very proud of our comprehensive
00:32
offer that we offer our young people here at Thomas Adams including the opportunity
00:36
to offer alternative provision, we very excitedly got built on the back car park an opportunity
00:43
to add to our provision with a new build that will help with external agencies involvement
00:48
for those individuals that may need additional support and needs and we're very proud of
00:53
the curriculum offer here that is very broad and balanced and we personalise that to meet
00:58
the individual needs of all our young people.
01:04
How you doing guys, what you reading?
01:08
What you got there bud?
01:09
Beast Quest.
01:10
Cool, what sort of books you like to read then?
01:12
Errr, I like to read like adventurous books.
01:16
Oh yeah cool, fair do's.
01:17
And who have we got over here then, what are you girls up to, what you picking?
01:20
Picking historical books.
01:23
Historical books?
01:24
Cool.
01:25
You into your history then?
01:26
Yeah.
01:27
What are your favourite subjects?
01:28
History and RE.
01:29
Ah yeah, good, cool.
01:30

01:34
Drama and history.
01:35
Good shout.
01:36
So we're here with three of the boarders at Thomas Adams and introduce yourselves guys.
01:41
I'm Abio.
01:42
I'm Aratha.
01:43
And I'm Julian.
01:44
So what's your experience been at the school here, a positive one I hope?
01:49
Yeah, I would say so for sure.
01:51
It's different than what I've been used to back home.
01:54
Where's back home for you?
01:56
The Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean.
01:58
Oh wow, okay.
01:59
A lot different from here.
02:00
So what happens when you've finished here at school, do you kind of go back that way or what's your plans?
02:06
I think off to university for sure.
02:09
Yeah.
02:10
Probably stay in England.
02:11
Yeah.
02:12
But you know, back and forth between here and there.
02:15
What do you want to study at uni?
02:17
Zoology.
02:18
Oh wow, that's interesting.
02:20
Cool.
02:21
And what about yourself?
02:22
So your home's not a million miles away, Cheshire.
02:25
No, I live in Wemsdale.
02:27
This is my first time being in a boarding school.
02:29
Yeah.
02:30
And it's been quite a positive experience and I'm enjoying it so far.
02:33
Yeah.
02:34
And what do you want to go on to do when you leave here?
02:36
I want to go uni and study psychology to become a therapist.
02:40
Fantastic.
02:41
And your home's a bit further afield again.
02:44
Go on.
02:45
So I live in Kuwait, which is quite far away.
02:48
Yeah.
02:49
And it's quite a different experience from here.
02:52
But I think it's quite nice being over here.
02:55
It gives me a different perspective to what I'm used to.
02:58
So it's quite nice.
03:00
And you might be, you've kind of fell in love with Kuwait, haven't you?
03:03
You're saying you'd be quite happy to kind of go and settle over there.
03:06
Yeah, 100%.
03:07
What would you like to do yourself then once you leave here?
03:09
Hopefully I'll go to university and do veterinary medicine.
03:12
Yeah.
03:13
So, yeah.
03:15
So what's kind of, if someone was, you know, thinking of choosing this school,
03:19
you'd give it a thumbs up then?
03:21
Yeah.
03:22
Yeah, your experience from it.
03:23
Cool.
03:24
And what's kind of some of your favourite subjects that you've got here?
03:27
What about yourself?
03:28
Probably biology.
03:29
Yeah.
03:30
It's my favourite subject.
03:31
Yeah.
03:32
I would say health and social.
03:34
Cool.
03:35
Biology as well.
03:36
Yeah, yes.
03:37
We've got some brilliant scientists.
03:39
I always struggled with science.
03:40
I did enjoy it, but it wasn't great.
03:43
So, in terms of the life here, like as a boarder, you know, me not being a boarder,
03:49
is there much that's kind of to do outside of school hours?
03:52
You know, is there kind of good social things, activities, that kind of stuff?
03:56
There's always somebody to talk to.
03:57
Yeah.
03:58
You'll always have somebody around that you can have a conversation with.
04:01
Yeah.
04:02
And, you know, you do have activities during the weekends and things like that.
04:05
So that's school organised stuff you can get involved in?
04:08
Yeah.
04:09
What sort of stuff?
04:10
We've got a trip coming up of paintballing.
04:12
Oh, wow.
04:13
Next week, I think it is.
04:14
Yeah.
04:15
There's a trip to Ikea this Friday.
04:16
Yeah.
04:17
We recently went pottery painting.
04:19
Yeah.
04:20
And it was really fun.
04:21
Oh, that's cool.
04:22
That sounds nice.
04:23
Yeah.
04:24
And any particular stuff you've been involved in, kind of, in the social side of things?
04:27
Yeah, I'm going on the Ikea trip.
04:29
Yeah, yeah.
04:30
But, yeah, I think in boarding, there's, like Julian said, there's always people to talk to.
04:34
Yeah.
04:35
Like, you're practically living with your friends.
04:37
Yeah.
04:39
Like, they're in your room.
04:40
I'm in their room.
04:41
So it's quite nice.
04:42
Cool.
04:43
Well, thank you for chatting to us, guys, and good luck in your future careers.
