00:00:00And Josh Cook on the Ferris wheel.
00:00:03It's time for amusements.
00:00:06It's Josh Cook and Paul O'Neill.
00:00:08You all good, mate?
00:00:09Yeah, good. How are you?
00:00:10I'm really well. I am looking forward to this.
00:00:12You like a bit of Ferris wheel?
00:00:14Yeah, I do, yeah. Let's see what it's like.
00:00:16Shall we see what it's like? Shall we jump on?
00:00:17Right, mate. I'm getting on first, by the way,
00:00:19so let's just be careful here.
00:00:21Oh, my word. I think I need to do something.
00:00:24Come in, Josh.
00:00:26This is a bit close and personal.
00:00:27Have you ever been round Brands Act as fast as this Ferris wheel is going to take us?
00:00:31Not today, I haven't, no.
00:00:34300th race today.
00:00:35Not going to ask you how that's gone, because it wasn't brilliant, was it?
00:00:39But great to complete 300 races in British touring cars, isn't it?
00:00:43Yeah, you know, as you know, as a racer yourself,
00:00:46trying to get to the pinnacle of UK motorsport is a very difficult thing to do.
00:00:51So just to actually get there was a big achievement for me.
00:00:53But, yeah, it's incredible how quickly it's gone around to get to my 300th race.
00:00:58And I'm still loving it as much as when I first joined.
00:01:01But, of course, I want to be winning that championship, and that's why I'm here.
00:01:04Of course. Do you think that's still a thing you can do this year?
00:01:07I mean, this year, I knew coming back to the team,
00:01:10it was going to be a difficult ask in the first year.
00:01:14We've got a few things that we need to iron out.
00:01:16We need to get into a nice rhythm of how we work together.
00:01:20That's not going to happen overnight.
00:01:21We're going to have, you know, real good hits.
00:01:24We're going to have some big misses.
00:01:25And, you know, you look at yesterday and qualifying,
00:01:28we'd gone in a direction to try and look for a little bit more.
00:01:31But it wasn't there.
00:01:32We ended up going backwards,
00:01:33and we had to spend all of the last night reverting back to what we know.
00:01:37So, you know, that's going to happen.
00:01:40Are you going to win a championship doing that?
00:01:41I don't think so.
00:01:42But we're looking at year two, year three,
00:01:44where we need to make sure that we're on the money every single weekend.
00:01:46And you've got to go through the motions to get yourself to that place.
00:01:50Yeah.
00:01:51Talking about nerves and banging and things, mate.
00:01:53This is not for me.
00:01:54We're actually on the fully top of Brands Act.
00:01:58You can see quite a lot from here.
00:01:59But are you all right with heights?
00:02:01Because I actually didn't tell you what we were doing.
00:02:03So I'm not great with them.
00:02:04Hold my hand.
00:02:05Well, you can stop holding my leg now anyway.
00:02:08But, yeah, I don't mind heights.
00:02:11It's quite a nice view up here, isn't it?
00:02:13Seeing the cars go around.
00:02:14Yeah, I've never seen Brands Act from this perspective before.
00:02:17But, yeah, it's good.
00:02:18Would you rather be going around on this or going around in your Honda?
00:02:22Right in the Honda, obviously, every time.
00:02:25But, look, yeah, I think, look at the crowds today.
00:02:27It's pretty good.
00:02:27It's nice weather.
00:02:28I think it's a good race weekend for people to come and see.
00:02:31So, yeah, if you are interested in touring cars,
00:02:33come and have a little look at another race weekend.
00:02:36Wicked.
00:02:37Right.
00:02:37What are we going to do then, mate?
00:02:38We're going to swap around because you've got the better view then.
00:02:40So, I'm going to go this way.
00:02:42This is nice.
00:02:44Good job.
00:02:44It's not the first time you've been swinging around a pole, is it?
00:02:46Mate, at least I'm thin enough to do this.
00:02:50You watch now.
00:02:50This side will be really heavy.
00:02:52Here we go.
00:02:53We're in.
00:02:53I'm going to ask you a question now.
00:02:54And it's not to offend you.
00:02:57But Ash Sutton, teammate with you back in the day.
00:03:01You finished ahead of him in the points in the championship.
00:03:04He's gone on to win all those championships, four championships.
00:03:06It must be a difficult watch, but he is a good friend.
00:03:09Yeah, I mean, I can only, you know, change the factors that I'm in control of.
00:03:15And, of course, you know, Ash has gone on to do very well, as has Ingram, as has Jake.
00:03:20And, of course, you know, I want to be winning the championship.
00:03:22That's why I'm here.
00:03:23But it's not, you know, everything has to all line up for that to happen.
00:03:27I'm confident enough in my own ability that seeing others, you know, do well doesn't annoy me in any way.
00:03:35I just need to make sure that we do a better job as a team.
00:03:38And now I've got complete confidence in myself.
00:03:40But, you know, it's difficult.
00:03:43It's a difficult game.
00:03:45So, yeah, that's a tough one to answer, as you know.
00:03:49But, of course, I'm just going to keep giving it absolutely everything day in, day out until I can achieve what I came here to do.
00:03:55Well, we believe in you, mate.
00:03:56It's going to be awesome.
00:03:58Steven Jelly as a team, mate.
00:03:59He's quite an interesting character, especially with that second name, isn't he?
00:04:03Yeah, he's a really nice guy, you know.
00:04:05And we work really well as a team.
00:04:07I love that there's, you know, there's a lot of experience between us.
00:04:10There's no ego.
00:04:12You know, even look at Donington.
00:04:14As soon as, you know, I was on a different strategy to him, I got to him, he moved out my way and vice versa when he was on a different strategy.
00:04:19And it's nice to have that sort of relationship, you know.
00:04:22Of course, we want to beat each other, but we need to make sure that we do do right by the team as well.
00:04:26So, it's a nice atmosphere.
00:04:28I'm sure it is, mate.
00:04:29Listen, we've come to the end of our ride, mate.
00:04:31Never mention that about poles ever again.
00:04:34No deal.
00:04:34Thanks, Josh.
00:04:36Cheers.
00:04:38And Jay, there was, has joined us in the studio.
00:04:40And, I mean, it's the kind of in-depth interview that could only be conducted on a Ferris wheel, isn't it?
00:04:44Yeah, Paul O'Neill, a Ferris wheel, Josh Cook.
00:04:47Yeah, that line-up was never going to be the most sort of, you weren't going to learn too much about the motorsport as such.
00:04:53But, yeah, pole dancing and stuff, as was definitely mentioned, I hear.
00:04:56Yeah, I'm quite surprised.
00:04:57I mean, that was done in the lunch break, that in the middle of a sort of intense day like the drivers have, he does a lap of the Ferris wheel with Paul O'Neill.
00:05:05Yeah, two laps of the Ferris wheel, of course.
00:05:07It's either a very fast Ferris wheel or Josh had a little gap in his programme.
00:05:10But I think because it was Paul and he asked him nicely, I think, yeah, as much as he's got a busy day, he found a little bit of space for Paul to have a chat with him.
00:05:18Yeah, I'm quite surprised that Paul could afford the time as well with the work he has to do.
00:05:23What have you been up to?
00:05:24We talked a couple of weeks ago about Silverstone last weekend, the Citroen.
00:05:28How did the 24-hour race go?
00:05:30It was good.
00:05:31Like I said last time we were here, it was myself, Josh Cook, Aidan Moffat and a couple of our friends did a 24-hour race in a Citroen C1.
00:05:38Grid of 45-ish cars through the night.
00:05:42We should have really been on for a podium and I know we always say that, but in credit to our car crew who some had never done a motorsport event before, let alone a 24-hour, did not miss a beat.
00:05:54We had a couple of discrepancies with the car and strategy in the night which dropped us back.
00:05:58We finished inside the top 10, but what an amazing weekend we had.
00:06:02It was the fun of motorsport.
00:06:04This is all very professional and it's all very high intensity and brilliant for everyone to watch, but the C1 stuff was good fun and brilliant to spend some time with friends and family and go racing in such a competitive championship.
00:06:16Quick reflection on race one here, total control from BMW and Jake Hill and Charles Rainford outstanding.
00:06:22Yeah, I mean this is a complete U-turn from Donington from WSR and BMW.
00:06:26Jake was always going to be strong here at his home circuit, he loves it, but Charles' biggest grin on his face, he said in his interview that one of the most surprising things was how comfortable we found it.
00:06:36So that tells me that he's very confident with the car that's underneath him.
00:06:40We'll see how they go on these hard tyres.
00:06:41We saw with the hard tyre runners in that previous race, it doesn't really come back to them at any point, you know.
00:06:47So we'll see how they get on.
00:06:49It's going to be a challenge, but a challenge that I'm excited to watch play out.
00:06:53Yeah, what Tom Ingram was indicating was maybe you could be that bit more aggressive on the hard tyres.
00:06:58Yeah, they don't seem to drop off that much.
00:07:00We saw Ash Sutton I think only made two or three places, Josh made two, I think Chris Smiley dropped a couple.
00:07:06So they're quite hard, the gap on them is different, but from that data in race one I think people will notice that you could probably be a bit aggressive on them,
00:07:14knowing that the cliff edge is not going to be there as expected.
00:07:17So yeah, we might see a very different style of racing in this next race.
00:07:20Out of the Championship this season, it'd be great to have him back, but wandering around the paddock is Rob Huff and he's been talking with Louise.
00:07:28Well, one man we're always happy to have a chat with, although it's a shame that he's not in the car this year, is Rob Huff.
00:07:34Why are you not in the car this year, Huffie?
00:07:36Very kind of you, Lou, thank you very much.
00:07:39I mean, first of all, wonderful to be here, wonderful to be at such a wonderful brand's hatch in the sunshine, nice and busy.
00:07:45I'm here with FSM, partnering with Will Fuchs in the management company.
00:07:50We've got Mikey Doble that we've looked after for a while now, and this week we just signed Ronan Pearson.
00:07:55And obviously Ronan, we know he's racing with Toyota this year.
00:07:58Obviously I've got very close links with the Toyota and Speedworks team from last year,
00:08:02so here to support him in any way we can, just to try and get him a bit further up the grid.
00:08:08And so far this year, I think it's worked, because obviously Donington, he had a fantastic qualifying and, again, best of the Toyotas today.
00:08:15So is this it in terms of your driving days or is focusing on management?
00:08:20Now that face says, no, I'm always up for a drive if there's one available.
00:08:23Did you bring your helmet with you just in case?
00:08:25No, I'm past that stage.
00:08:27I'm past that stage.
00:08:28But no, I'm still doing a lot of driving, mainly in historics.
00:08:31You know, I loved being back in the British Touring Cars last year, but, you know, it just wasn't a great fit for this year.
00:08:37I've got so much going on outside of driving for myself that I just needed this time.
00:08:42And, you know, we're getting, you know, towards the end of the career.
00:08:46But, you know, never say never.
00:08:48But it is a massive thing for a young driver to be able to dive into that experience and that knowledge that you have, isn't it?
00:08:55What kind of stuff?
00:08:55I mean, obviously, you're not telling them how to drive, but what kind of, or maybe you are.
00:08:59What kind of things are you advising them on and helping them with?
00:09:02No, you're right.
00:09:03I mean, I've got a fantastic picture of Ronan and myself, 2011, in the Donington Pits, when I think he was 11 years old at that point.
00:09:11So, you know, we've got a great relationship.
00:09:13And it's the support, you know, these weekends, BTCC, it's such, you know, high maintenance as a driver.
00:09:21You're being pulled pillar to post.
00:09:22There's so much to think about.
00:09:24It's just a case of giving him the confidence that he's doing the right things.
00:09:27When he's not doing the right things, help him out.
00:09:30And just be, you know, be here as a comfort blanket, effectively, with him knowing that I've got the experience of 20 years as a pro driver.
00:09:38But just to reassure him that everything he's doing is the right thing.
00:09:42And as we see on track, he's doing an amazing job.
00:09:44Good to have you around.
00:09:45Thank you very much.
00:09:46Cheers.
00:09:47Yeah, it is great when experienced drivers like that are able to put something back into the sport, you know, via the young talent that's out there.
00:09:54Absolutely.
00:09:54And I think that, like Rob was saying there, he's not necessarily telling people exactly how to drive.
00:09:59It's just helping them with the maintenance of the weekend and being a second pair of eyes.
00:10:03Having a driver coach as such or a manager that's able to look at your data and to look at the weekend from a different viewpoint will help anyone.
00:10:10So it's really good to see Rob back.
00:10:12And no doubt he's helping the team in general with his advice to just one of the drivers as well.
00:10:17Yeah, he might be able to do a job for Gordon Sheridan.
00:10:19I mean, he is having a bit of a nightmare, isn't he?
00:10:21Yeah, he's not having the season or the start of the season that he definitely wanted.
00:10:26We know he's quicker than the car is giving him at the moment.
00:10:29When we look at the list of drivers, we know that his name should not be where it is.
00:10:34So I'm sure he's working super hard with the team to find out what the issue is somewhere within the car that moves him forward.
00:10:40And hopefully between race one and two, they found something and we can see the Gordon that we all know throughout his career.
00:10:46OK, soft tyres.
00:10:47What do you expect him from Ash Sutton in race two?
00:10:50I think he's going to come alive a little bit.
00:10:52He knows he's got to scrape back some points that he's maybe lost in race one.
00:10:56But we'll also see how well the BMWs deal with the hard tyres.
00:10:59So we could see some swapping and changing, but he can't risk too much.
00:11:03We can't risk a DNF and no point score.
00:11:05So, yeah, Ash is going to be elbows out moving forward, but in a fairly sensible-ish way, if we can even use that word in British Touring Cars.
00:11:12OK, thanks, Jade.
00:11:14Picnics are over.
00:11:15Funfair is emptied and everyone is back taking their places ahead of this second race of a scorching afternoon on the short circuit at Brands Hatch.
00:11:23The cars heading to the grid will be out there with Louise in just a few minutes' time.
00:11:30Racing are back with a record-breaking 133rd win.
00:11:34Race winner Jake Hill and Charles Rainford will make up the front row of the grid.
00:11:38And they and Tom Ingram in third are all on hard tyres.
00:11:41Scorching hot at Brands Hatch.
00:11:43Let's go down and join Louise.
00:11:46Thank you, Steve.
00:11:46It is scorching hot down here.
00:11:48As you say, I'm down a P5 on the grid with Dan Camish, the man who, if you think back to Donington, took the first pole position of the season.
00:11:56He went on to have a puncture in race one at Donington, fought back to get onto the podium in race two.
00:12:01And we'll be hoping to do that again, at least in this race.
00:12:05But, Dan, I want to ask you, in race one, how much was that puncture you had last time out on your mind?
00:12:10Were you a little bit cautious on the soft tyres?
00:12:13Oh, no, absolutely.
00:12:14It was a big part of our debrief.
00:12:17I don't think my engineers slept properly since Donington, to be honest.
00:12:22Yeah, it's given us a lot of food for thought.
00:12:24You know, we've really had to, you know, look how hot it is today.
00:12:26I mean, it's beautiful.
00:12:27But it's hot.
00:12:30On this tarmac, you know, we've got this new tarmac down here.
00:12:33It's around 10 degrees hotter.
00:12:35I think that was 43 degrees track temperature on that side.
00:12:38So, you're asking the soft tyre to do a heck of a lot.
00:12:41And I was very conscious that, you know, yes, maybe there's a couple of places, but the flip side of that is catastrophe.
00:12:49And I got very lucky at Donington with the safety car timing.
00:12:53Drove well to get myself back into a sensible position that saved my day.
00:12:57But what were the chances of that happening again?
00:12:59So, we've got to the end, did a good job.
00:13:01The tyre looked great.
00:13:02So, I think we can sort of go a little bit more aggressive in this one.
00:13:05Well, and you've got three guys ahead of you, just ahead of you, who've got the harder tyre on.
00:13:09So, how easy is it going to be to overtake here?
00:13:12I mean, I want to say that, you know, that they should be a fairly decent grip deficit to start with.
00:13:17You know, we should have the advantage by quite a margin.
00:13:21They're going to make it difficult, I think.
00:13:22I hope not too difficult.
00:13:24Obviously, Tom might be thinking of trying to help Adam a little bit if he can.
00:13:27Because it looks like he might have helped him a little bit in race one.
00:13:29And my job, and Adam's job, is to get past these guys as fast as humanly possible.
00:13:35And then we can go race it out at the front.
00:13:38Yeah, I feel like we've got a good package under us.
00:13:40We've made some more changes.
00:13:42Let's see if we can take it to the Hyundai's and BMW's in this one.
00:13:45Thanks, Tom.
00:13:46Well, those soft tyres are definitely going to help in that.
00:13:48And in fact, between here and the back of the grid, there's only one driver who is on the hard tyre.
00:13:53And in fact, down at the back of the grid, I think is where Paul is right now.
00:13:55Yeah, standard stuff, Lou.
00:13:58Back of the grid as usual.
00:14:00How are you, Nick?
00:14:01Good to see you back.
00:14:03Loving to be back again.
00:14:05And what's the score?
00:14:06You've been testing, haven't you, before you come here?
00:14:08As in, you were racing here the other weekend, but you've been cheating.
00:14:11A very different car.
00:14:13A bit of a rejig from very, very fast straight line, rear-wheel drive,
00:14:19to the chaos that is BT's GT.
00:14:23Good to be back, though.
00:14:24Yeah, loving it.
00:14:25You know, all the fan engagement, bringing back crazy cars.
00:14:29Been a bit of back to the fire with no testing, but still loving it.
00:14:33Top man, I'm going to leave you to it, because I know how nervous it can be
00:14:36when you're back on the grid, BTCC-wise.
00:14:39Follow me.
00:14:40Let's talk to this absolute diamond of a gentleman.
00:14:44Nick Hamilton, round this side.
00:14:46Follow us.
00:14:47Nick has always got so many people around his car.
00:14:50He does so much for so many people.
00:14:53He probably hates talking to everyone, but quickly, Nick,
00:14:55how cool, man, is it to be back on this grid?
00:14:57And you do so much for the community, mate.
00:15:00Absolutely, buddy.
00:15:02Yeah, so grateful to be here.
00:15:04Thank you to everybody for getting me here in the first place.
00:15:07And to have a disabled person, you know, holding my grid board was incredible first race.
00:15:13I was very emotional.
00:15:14But, yeah, looking forward to it, mate.
00:15:16The sun's out.
00:15:17It's going well so far.
00:15:18So, really happy.
00:15:19You were hoping that these soft tyres are better than the hards, mate?
00:15:22Yeah, we tried to get rid of the hard tyres in the first race, which we did.
00:15:25Unfortunately, I had a power steering failure, which meant that we didn't finish the first race.
00:15:29But I feel like we got good race pace and just enjoying being back.
00:15:33You know what it's like.
00:15:34You know, it's such a privilege and honour to be here.
00:15:37So, yeah, I'm having fun.
00:15:39Just quickly on the disability front, it's amazing, isn't it, what you do?
00:15:43And I know you just kind of, like, bat it away.
00:15:46But it is amazing, mate, you're getting a bit of radio contact.
00:15:49Hang on.
00:15:50Yeah, I mean, disability for me is obviously super important.
00:15:55And now that I'm back in the car, I want to really open up doors for other disabled individuals within motorsport.
00:16:01You don't have to just be a racing driver to be a part of the sport.
00:16:04And, yeah, young George, who was in his wheelchair, you know, being a part of the team today meant the most to me.
00:16:10And, you know, this is my purpose, to live with my disability and try and open doors for other people.
00:16:16I do a great job in the car.
00:16:18Yeah, it's hard.
00:16:18And, you know, I'm not necessarily at the front.
00:16:20But to get here in the first place has taken a lot.
00:16:23And, yeah, I'm really grateful for the opportunity, but also really proud of myself to be here in the first place.
00:16:28Top man, well, we all love you to bits, mate.
00:16:30You do a great job for everyone.
00:16:31Good luck in this race.
00:16:32Back to you, Lou.
00:16:33Thank you, Paul.
00:16:34Yeah, I'm with another man.
00:16:35We talked to him earlier on, actually, about the fact he was running a reverse strategy needed to get rid of that hard tyre earlier on,
00:16:41which he has now done, but actually quite successfully, because made up three places on the grid in race one.
00:16:48I can see his focus is just off to the left, where I can see the guys putting his, if you just look the camera over,
00:16:55you can see the guys putting the marker tape in place on the wall.
00:16:58So, I don't want to button and disturb him too much while that's going on.
00:17:02Yep, you're back with me?
00:17:03Yep, cool.
00:17:04So, I'm just talking about the fact that you actually made up three places in race one on the hard tyre.
00:17:08So, pretty good result for you.
00:17:10Yeah, it was a good start, obviously.
00:17:13Chris Smiley was the only hard tyre in front of us.
00:17:15So, yeah, we made a jump on in.
00:17:17But we had a mega start, jumped two of the guys on softs and got past Chris at the end of lap one.
00:17:22So, yeah, it was a really good lap one and that was kind of it.
00:17:24They kind of settled in and sort of just brought it home from there.
00:17:28Soft tyre now, lots of changes to the car.
00:17:30It's the case of just send it, basically, and see how much high ramp you can get, is it?
00:17:33Yeah, exactly that.
00:17:34We've got to go forward now.
00:17:35We need some points.
00:17:36So, yeah, obviously, it is a bit of a soft tyre race other than the guys up front.
00:17:40And I think there's one car behind us.
00:17:42So, it's going to be difficult.
00:17:44But we've got hybrid now on our side, or boost on our side,
00:17:47which is going to help us get through the grid.
00:17:50But, yeah, we'll wait and see.
00:17:51We need to protect the soft tyre as well.
00:17:53It's still a concern for some people.
00:17:57Always a balancing act, but I'm sure you'll make the most of it.
00:18:00And I'm sure we're going to enjoy it as well.
00:18:01It's going to be coming up after this break.
00:18:07Racing resumes at Brands Hatch with round five.
00:18:11The Quick Fit British Touring Car Championship will go straight to the commentators.
00:18:14Tim Harvey and David Addison.
00:18:16And with the grid formed then, the second race of the day,
00:18:19ready to get underway with Jake Hill, this time starting on pole position.
00:18:23But this time around, Tim Harvey, he has fewer laps of boost.
00:18:27And he's on what you might call the wrong tyre, the harder, slower tyre.
00:18:31Yeah, the evidence from race one absolutely is that red side walled hard tyre
00:18:35is about six, seven tenths of that slumber.
00:18:37Looking at lap times of Ash Sutton and Chris Smiley in race one.
00:18:42So, he's definitely got his work cut out, but he knows that he's got faster cars behind him.
00:18:47He'll just have to manage his race and try and finish and get as many blocks as he can.
00:18:51But it's a great old duty for those starting fourth backwards on the soft tyre to potentially win this race.
00:18:58So, cars on the first of two formation laps.
00:19:01One or two drivers had a rather tough first race, which included Tom Chilton.
00:19:07Let's try and check in with Tom before we go racing.
00:19:0922nd on the grid, Tom.
00:19:11Race one was pretty tough.
00:19:13Yeah, it was really hard.
00:19:14Don't ever say 22nd ever again.
00:19:17It's not a place I want to ever be again.
00:19:20To be honest, in all fairness, it is the first ever time
00:19:24out of the over two decades I've been racing at the BTCC
00:19:28I've ever run a hard tyre at Brands Hatch.
00:19:31And it definitely showed.
00:19:32We didn't get it right, did we?
00:19:34And was that just the tyre or tyre and setup or something more sinister?
00:19:39To be honest, it's a bit of everything.
00:19:42I think if you haven't done testing on a tyre, which we haven't,
00:19:46you can't expect to be good on it.
00:19:48And that's what's happened.
00:19:49We didn't get the setup right.
00:19:50And I had a bit of bad luck as well with Moffat nearly spinning himself into paddock.
00:19:57I had to brake to avoid him.
00:19:58Sure.
00:19:59Which, obviously, I was going to do.
00:20:01I was going to casually crash into him.
00:20:04But when you're in a position, you can't just pull out in front of oncoming traffic.
00:20:09It'll be a massive crash.
00:20:11So I just very unfortunately lost four places very quickly.
00:20:15And, yeah, it wasn't my day.
00:20:17But I'm now in the softs and I've got tons of hybrids.
00:20:20I'm very excited.
00:20:21Excellent.
00:20:22Good luck, Tom.
00:20:24Enjoy.
00:20:25So Tom Chilton starts with the maximum amount of boost rather than hybrid, to be fair to him.
00:20:32So 12 laps is the maximum.
00:20:34That's what he will have.
00:20:35Right.
00:20:35Let's have a look at the grid before we go racing.
00:20:38Jake Hill starts on pole position.
00:20:40Teammate Charles Rainford with him at the front of the grid.
00:20:43They're both on the hard tyre.
00:20:44And so is Tom Ingram.
00:20:46Anticipate them to drop back against Adam Morgan.
00:20:49Then Dan Kamish and Mikey Doble to round out the top six on the grid.
00:20:51Daryl Deleon starts seventh.
00:20:53Sam Osborne is eighth.
00:20:55Ninth is where you find Dan Lloyd.
00:20:57Ash Sutton, tenth this time, ahead of Ronan Pearson and Chris Smiley.
00:21:01Thirteenth is Michael Kreese on home soil, ahead of Stephen Jelly.
00:21:04Fifteenth is Josh Cook after a tough first race once again.
00:21:07Then Aaron Taylor-Smith, James Dawlin.
00:21:09The only other driver outside the top three on the hard tyre.
00:21:12Dan Rowbottom is next, ahead of Dexter Patterson and Aidan Moffat.
00:21:1621st, Gordon Shedham.
00:21:17Next is Tom Chilton, seeing that he asked me not to say 22nd again.
00:21:20Max Hall is 23rd.
00:21:22Nick Halstead is 24th.
00:21:23And after his power steering issues fixed, Nick Hamilton will go from the back of the grid.
00:21:29Two formation laps to get warmth into the tyres.
00:21:32It's a very, very warm day still.
00:21:34And now at least the teams have a bit of an idea in terms of what the soft tyre is going to do.
00:21:38You can see what tyre compound people are on.
00:21:40The red is the hard, the white is the soft.
00:21:42In terms of laps of the boost available.
00:21:45Pole position, race one winner, Jake Hill has five laps available.
00:21:48It goes up all the way to 12 if you are eighth or further back.
00:21:5312 laps out of the 24 is the maximum any body can have.
00:21:57Yes, and making use of it is proving very effective, isn't it?
00:22:02Although the policy is always to try and leave as much boost as you can for the end of the race
00:22:06unless you need to overtake or defend, it's proving mighty popular around here and quite effective.
00:22:13Pick a winner.
00:22:13I'm tempted to say Dan Kamish or Adam Morgan, but I wouldn't count out how subtle it is from.
00:22:21Okay, interesting choice.
00:22:22So that's three I've chosen.
00:22:24Yeah, it's a good fence to sit on, isn't it?
00:22:26Who are you choosing, David?
00:22:28Somebody that might come through first at the end of the race.
00:22:31Someone on softs.
00:22:32Absolutely.
00:22:32Great choice.
00:22:33Yes, I think Kamish is a good shout.
00:22:35After that, Adam Morgan maybe.
00:22:39I'd like to see Adam Morgan win.
00:22:41He normally goes well around brands.
00:22:43He likes front wheel driving.
00:22:44He's the first of those softs.
00:22:45It's going to be fascinating because there are other people like Ash Sutton,
00:22:48like Dan Roy, like Bruce Smiley, Stephen Jelly, plenty of others, Josh Cook on that soft tyre
00:22:52coming up the grid from further back.
00:22:54Aidan Moffat will start 20th.
00:22:55You're on board with him.
00:22:56I can tell you Ash Sutton is dangerously close to, as is Sam Osborne,
00:23:02dangerously close to being in front of their pit box.
00:23:06The grid market line, yes.
00:23:07It's actually Sam Osborne there.
00:23:09Yeah, you can see that.
00:23:10He's very far forward, isn't he?
00:23:12In front of the car.
00:23:12Probably okay.
00:23:13Over the line.
00:23:14Right, we're ready to go.
00:23:15The fifth race of the season in the Quick Fit British Touring Car Championship.
00:23:20Lights go red.
00:23:21It is blast off with another good start coming from the BMWs.
00:23:25Also away rapidly was Dan Kamish.
00:23:27Jake Hill is going to lead on the way up towards Paddock.
00:23:29Tom Ingram third.
00:23:30Adam Morgan has dropped back behind Kamish.
00:23:32So not a great start.
00:23:33Look at the gap.
00:23:33The two BMWs have pulled already.
00:23:35They come through Paddock for the first time.
00:23:37Ingram is third.
00:23:37Kamish is fourth.
00:23:38Morgan is fifth-ish on the outside line, but he's got Darrell De Leon charging up alongside him as they come into the hairpin for the first time safely through.
00:23:46Jake Hill leads downhill for the first time.
00:23:48Well, one good thing about this hot weather is it's, oh, someone getting wide there.
00:23:52That could have been Osborne.
00:23:54But it's, it's, no, it's further back.
00:23:57But one of the good things about the hot weather is the BMWs can switch on those hard tyres much quicker.
00:24:02Remember, they've always had problems with it in the past when the weather's been cold.
00:24:06But they're away and gone in formation at the front.
00:24:08I think the car that got all sideways may have been Dan Lloyd's restart racing Hyundai as they come up now towards the end of lap number one.
00:24:14So Jake Hill leads the way.
00:24:16He has one lap fewer of boost than Charles Rainsford does.
00:24:19But Dan Kamish already up into third, the best of those on that faster, softer tyre.
00:24:24He's cleared Tom Ingram now in fifth place.
00:24:26Darrell De Leon is making good progress.
00:24:28It's Adam Morgan in sixth.
00:24:29He's dropped back in real terms as they head towards the hairpin for the second time.
00:24:32Ash Sutton, they're right on the back of Mikey Doble.
00:24:35Seventh and eighth they are.
00:24:36Yeah, Ash Sutton's got that race sort of aggressiveness about him.
00:24:39He's looking for every gap.
00:24:41He wants to make progress quickly at the start of the race.
00:24:43So far so good as the cars can come along Cooper straight behind Suss.
00:24:48And it's Chris Smiley in ninth time.
00:24:50Osborne is tenth.
00:24:51How is Tom Chilton getting on?
00:24:52When he was 23rd across the line.
00:24:54Max Hall goes ahead of Dexter Patterson and opens up a gap for Tom Chilton to attack into.
00:24:58He manages to get up alongside Patterson who comes back at him.
00:25:01Look on the inside.
00:25:02They rub, but Dexter Patterson in the unlimited motorsport Cooper.
00:25:06He's going to hang on to the place.
00:25:07Yeah, it gets good traction off, but it looks like Chilton may be on the move.
00:25:11Well, Patterson's on the boost.
00:25:12You saw the light flashing, but in spite of that, Chilton's able to draw almost the wrong side of him.
00:25:18James Dorland on the hard tyre dropping back in the queue as well.
00:25:21There is Smiley under attack because right with him now is Sam Osborne.
00:25:25That means though that Chris Smiley fends off the forward.
00:25:27Mikey Doble dives up the inside, clasters across the side of the Sam Osborne focus,
00:25:32but does go through.
00:25:33And then behind you've got Ronan Pearson just being able to keep Dan Lloyd at bay.
00:25:38Now you can start to see that the cars on that hard tyre are just starting to lose the edge
00:25:42because Dan Kamish on softs has done the fastest lap of the race
00:25:45and look how much closer he is now to the BMWs.
00:25:48And Charles Rainford had a big moment coming out of clearways there.
00:25:52The back end of that BMW stepping out quite violently.
00:25:55A lot less grip on that time than he enjoyed in race one.
00:25:58So down through Paddock there is still a gap between the BMW of Jake Hill and Charles Rainford
00:26:05but if Dan Kamish can get past Rainford swiftly then he's in with a shout
00:26:08and so is Daryl de Leon because remember his BMW, well suited to the circuit, is on the better tyre.
00:26:14So Daryl de Leon, never a touring car race winner, has a chance here of a good result.
00:26:18You're on board with Aidan Moffat, his BMW is flying and that's Dan Rowbottom ahead
00:26:22and this means you're looking at the fight now for 15th and 16th places.
00:26:25Yeah, Rowbottom didn't enjoy race one.
00:26:28Oh, up the inside comes Kamish and Charles Rainford probably won't fight this
00:26:33but look, another big slide.
00:26:34See that oversteer for the BMW but Kamish is through
00:26:37so it looks like Rainford is struggling with that left rear hard tyre on the BMW at the moment.
00:26:42And right with him now is Daryl de Leon, he dives for the inside, came from a bit too far back.
00:26:47Charles Rainford tries to give his teammate enough room and Sam Osborne does indeed get a five-second penalty
00:26:53for a false start as Tim was fearing.
00:26:55Up the inside goes to Leon and a big, big dive from Adam Morgan as well.
00:26:58He will go through on the inside line.
00:27:00Morgan lost out on the opening lap but he's fighting back now trying to make amends.
00:27:04So Sam Osborne is 10th on the road.
00:27:06You apply the penalty for being slightly out of position at the start
00:27:09and he will drop even further down the order.
00:27:12Kamish then on a mission.
00:27:13Morgan, fastest man on the circuit, new fastest lap of the race.
00:27:16But here we see a replay. Kamish lining it up.
00:27:20Obviously he's got more grit.
00:27:21Rainford doesn't fight him too hard.
00:27:24And watch the slide. Watch the slide as he comes out.
00:27:28There, look at that. Wow!
00:27:30Really putting the power down hard there.
00:27:33But yeah, Kamish safely through.
00:27:34I think Kamish just used a couple of laps to bring his tyres in nicely, as did Morgan.
00:27:38But it won't be too long before Kamish has put the same sort of pressure on Hill.
00:27:44So race order is Jake Hill ahead of Dan Kamish.
00:27:47Third is Daryl De Leon. Fourth Adam Morgan. Fifth Charles Rainford.
00:27:51Sixth Ash Sutton with Chris Smiley, Mikey Doble, Sam Osborne and Tom Ingram rounding out the top ten on the road.
00:27:57Remember, Osborne has got a penalty.
00:27:59You've still got three of the four drivers on Hill in that top ten.
00:28:02And a big, big sort out sub. Osborne goes one side.
00:28:04There's contact there that fires.
00:28:06Chris Smiley way, way, way across the grass.
00:28:08And he's having a huge moment. It's Dan Lloyd, in fact.
00:28:11So apologies, Dan Lloyd.
00:28:12Rees-Long-Gunday is the one that got clipped onto the grass.
00:28:15But that was just everybody going for the same piece of tarmac.
00:28:18They managed more or less to survive, except for poor old Dan Lloyd,
00:28:22who yet again is the one that gets roughed up.
00:28:24There's his teammate Chris Smiley diving into panic with Ash Sutton just ahead of him.
00:28:29This is now for sixth place.
00:28:30But that could have been a lot, lot worse on Cooper Strait.
00:28:32It looked nasty. We've seen big accidents there in the past, haven't we?
00:28:35But Dan Lloyd was unfortunate, and he was trying to take avoiding action.
00:28:39But of course, he's now, oh, and we've got an off at Paddock.
00:28:42Big off at Paddock with lots and lots of dust settling then.
00:28:44So there's a car well and truly beached in the gravel as the leading cars come onto Cooper Strait.
00:28:50You're riding with Aidan Moffett here, and that's Tom Ingram.
00:28:53Safety car deployed. Safety car is on track.
00:28:55As round the outside goes, Moffett, as he made the move stick before the safety car comes onto the track.
00:29:01Yes, as he goes through, wheel lifting ahead of him was Mikey Domell.
00:29:04But the safety car deployed because we've got the two teammates, Max Hall and Dexter Patterson, in the gravel.
00:29:11And that's not going to go down well in the camp, is it?
00:29:13No. The team like that, they don't need expensive repairs, and they definitely don't need non-finishes from both their drivers.
00:29:20And they don't need the non-finishes to be caused by another driver from the team.
00:29:23Dan Lloyd looked rejoining, but a lap down.
00:29:26I suspect with all the grass, the thing was off the clock temperature-wise, so he had to come in and scoop that out.
00:29:30Max Hall with broken front-right suspension, as you can see, trudges away.
00:29:34And this might take a while to get both of those cars out of the gravel, and they've gone a long way through the gravel.
00:29:39Yeah, they're both buried, aren't they? It may have been an innocent mistake, but they were both on the soft tyre,
00:29:45so it wasn't as though there was a tyre difference there.
00:29:47Look, teammates are going to have a whirl with each other.
00:29:49All looks, no, not friendly. Not friendly at all.
00:29:57So, the marshal now has to try and mediate between the two, and with lots of head shaking, the drivers head away.
00:30:06We have the cars in the gravel, the snatch vehicle is on its way, but they've gone a long, long way through the gravel.
00:30:13There is Dexter Patterson, who was very non-plus by all of that, and the latch wall likewise.
00:30:19So, the two teammates out of the race, and it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when both drivers get back to the team debrief at the end of the race.
00:30:28Well, hopefully the temper will have cooled a little, but in these temperatures it's not going to be easy.
00:30:34But, clearly, we don't know the cause of it, so let's not summarize what might have happened,
00:30:40but certainly not the result from this race that Unlimited Motorsport wanted.
00:30:45Let's just recap at the front. Hill still leads on the hard tyre, with Kamish right behind.
00:30:51Obviously, the field will close right up again.
00:30:54De Leon in the second BMW, but the first BMW on Softs is in third.
00:30:59Morgan is in fourth, and Rainford on the hard tyre in fifth.
00:31:03Ingram has slipped back to twelfth on his hard tyres.
00:31:07He's obviously not wanting to be involved in any shenanigans at all.
00:31:12It may be a struggle for him to add to his four podium finishes on the trot.
00:31:18Indeed so, because with everybody bunched up behind him, he will be in jeopardy of losing more places before the end.
00:31:24The BMW, using contrast, haven't yet dropped away in the same vein that Ingram's Hyundai has done.
00:31:30Remember, with the safety car out, we can add a maximum of three laps on.
00:31:34So the cars come out of clear ways into Clark Curve.
00:31:37And Dan Lloyd is hugely frustrated about his part in the drama on Cooper Straight, because it dropped him off the lead lap.
00:31:46He's back circulating, but falls off the lead lap.
00:31:49So, likewise, he's going to be way out of the points.
00:31:52Interesting, looking at the lap times.
00:31:54The best lap for Hill on the hard tyres is a 47.9.
00:31:58And the best lap of the race, the fastest lap, Morgan, on the soft tyres, a 47.6.
00:32:03So only three tenths of a second difference.
00:32:06So that hard tyre is working actually very well on the BMWs.
00:32:11It's coming very good.
00:32:12So, Jake Hill, race leader, with the field currently working lap number ten.
00:32:20And looking a little bit further down the order, there is Tom Chilton making his way up towards Druid.
00:32:28While we're behind the safety car, let's try and grab a word with Tom Chilton, if we can.
00:32:32Tom, currently 18th.
00:32:35Progress being made, but it's still quite hard by the look of it.
00:32:38Yeah, well, I'm happy to make four places and a couple of really good, enjoyable overtakes.
00:32:44But it's not easy.
00:32:46But I've now caught up to the group again.
00:32:49Well, I have now the safety car, but I had just before that.
00:32:52And I felt that I was very fast.
00:32:55So, for sure, it's going to be exciting to get the race underway.
00:33:01So, I think we're strong.
00:33:02I think we've got a great car under us.
00:33:03What's been the strategy so far with the boost?
00:33:06Have you been using much of it?
00:33:07Has that been to try to get you through the traffic?
00:33:09Or have you been saving it to use should there be a safety car?
00:33:13Yeah, I wanted to use a bit at the beginning to get past a few.
00:33:17And then I was waiting for people's tyres to go off and then use it to overtake.
00:33:21I was a bit frustrated that I used some on that lap the safety car came out
00:33:25because I didn't know it was going to come out.
00:33:27So, I kind of feel like I lost the lap there.
00:33:29Okay.
00:33:29But that is frustrating, but that's part of racing sometimes.
00:33:34Right, we'll leave you to it.
00:33:35We're going to go racing soon, I guess.
00:33:36Thumbs up, then, from Tom Chilton.
00:33:40And he talks about gaining paces.
00:33:43Well, he has been chipping his way up the order.
00:33:45Here was one pass.
00:33:46This was against Dexter Patterson.
00:33:47Yeah, who at the time, look, has got Max Hall running in front of him.
00:33:50In fact, running very much a blocking manoeuvre.
00:33:53Well, they were definitely getting stuck into each other.
00:33:56Look, already, Patterson and all.
00:33:57That opened the door for Chilton to go through, but that might have been a precursor of what transpired a little bit later between those two teammates.
00:34:05Indeed so.
00:34:06Right, so that was two places gained in one fell swoop for Tom Chilton.
00:34:10And that's the bunch in front of you that he was talking about getting on the back on.
00:34:14Of course, the safety car will close everybody up prior to the restart, at least.
00:34:18And don't forget we have a new safety car restart procedure now in place for this year.
00:34:24So the cars will not be able to accelerate until they come out of clearways and get to the restart line.
00:34:30So that will keep the cars bunched up much closer on the restart.
00:34:34We've still got Max Hall's car to be removed from the gravel.
00:34:37They're going to use the lift, the roof hook lift.
00:34:41So it's going to take a little while just to get that fixed up.
00:34:46Indeed so.
00:34:47That was the car that seemed to have more front right corner damage.
00:34:51How is the Aidan Moffat being able to be getting on 11th currently?
00:34:57So Aidan, as oft he does on race day, rebuilding.
00:35:01He started 20th on the grid.
00:35:03He was, what, 25th on the grid for race one, 20th on the grid for race two,
00:35:06and he's now up into 11th, working towards maybe lucking in on the reverse grid for race three.
00:35:11Well, he's already into that lucky 12th, one of which will get the pole position for race three.
00:35:16So he's already achieved that.
00:35:17The higher up he gets, the greater chance for a front position on the reverse grid.
00:35:22So going well, Aidan Moffat.
00:35:25Not done yet.
00:35:26Of course, as across the timing line they come.
00:35:30The recovery operation almost done.
00:35:34Down at Paddock, there you can see the other crippled Cupra being moved away.
00:35:39And drivers not standing next to each other, rather pointedly.
00:35:43They are yards apart there.
00:35:45Yes, the body language is not, let's go for a beer later, is it?
00:35:48No.
00:35:49Definitely not.
00:35:49There is no kissing and making up yet.
00:35:51So, we're very shortly able to go back racing, because once the Cupra is in the safe place,
00:35:57so too will be the snatch vehicle.
00:35:59And already the lights are out on top of the safety car.
00:36:01So Ian Watson, the clerk of the course, wanting to let them go this time around.
00:36:05So the safety car will accelerate away to the pit lane.
00:36:07Jake Hill absolutely storms away by getting a big gap.
00:36:11Now, has Dan Cammich got a problem?
00:36:12Because he slowed right down and others were looking to try to find a way past him,
00:36:16which you're not meant to do.
00:36:18He stopped.
00:36:18But he has stopped.
00:36:18He stopped, and there's almost a traffic jam behind him.
00:36:21Look, Aidan Moffat has got into the back of him and has only now got going.
00:36:24Look at the damage on Cammich's car.
00:36:26It has stopped on the track, and this is going to make the safety car stay out, potentially.
00:36:31Well, it's coming to the pit lane, but Cammich is stranded on the track.
00:36:34There's broken suspension, possibly, where he was hit in the back.
00:36:37What's going to happen now?
00:36:37He's got the car moving slowly, crab-like.
00:36:40We go racing, and Daryl De Leon is going to make a move for the race lead.
00:36:44Look, coming up towards Paddock Hill Bend, and the safety car has been called.
00:36:48Again.
00:36:48That's because Cammich has stopped once again in a very dangerous place, so no way.
00:36:53I mean, see, you're not obviously supposed to overtake under the safety car,
00:36:57so the cars behind were queuing up behind him.
00:37:01Hill hadn't actually gone.
00:37:02He was just keeping up the pace of the safety car,
00:37:05and all of a sudden Cammich stopped.
00:37:07A couple of cars ran into the back of him,
00:37:09and they need to recover that car now.
00:37:11What a disaster for Cammich.
00:37:13Second place, looking in line for a possible win.
00:37:15He doesn't have much luck with that boy, does he?
00:37:17He does not, and talk about Donington being somewhere that he has very bad luck.
00:37:22Well, Brands Hatch as well.
00:37:23In fact, maybe it's just everywhere in a touring car these days,
00:37:25but the safety car deployed again,
00:37:28and there's an element of disbelief in the Napa Racing UK garage,
00:37:33and for the man himself as well.
00:37:34As Dan Cammich gets out of the car and has a look,
00:37:38it could have been something electrical that he was trying to sort,
00:37:40but with suspension damage, there's no chance of getting going now.
00:37:43Here you are again.
00:37:44Look, Jake Hill accelerates.
00:37:45Dan Cammich can't go with him.
00:37:47It suddenly becomes apparent to some of those behind that the car has a problem.
00:37:50Charles Rainford doesn't know what...
00:37:52Daryl De Leon.
00:37:52Daryl De Leon doesn't know what to do.
00:37:54Eventually, they do go past.
00:37:57And then Aidan Moffat in a moment is amongst those.
00:37:59Yes, Mikey Doble as well,
00:38:00that just had nowhere to go as the pack split and banged into the back of him.
00:38:05So let's have a look from how the traffic saw it.
00:38:07This is on board with Tom Chilton.
00:38:09He's getting ready to go racing,
00:38:10and then all of a sudden there's a traffic jam ahead of him.
00:38:13Yeah, completely unsighted, obviously.
00:38:16But gets through.
00:38:17They're going to have to shuffle some of these positions as well, aren't they?
00:38:20Get the cars back in the line.
00:38:22They were.
00:38:23This is on board with Moffat.
00:38:25It's Mikey Doble that I think gets the big hit.
00:38:33Oh, he's thinking, what do I do?
00:38:35What do I do?
00:38:37Oh.
00:38:38Bang, bang.
00:38:39It hits two of them.
00:38:40Yeah, that was...
00:38:41I'd be amazed if there isn't more damage on both cars.
00:38:45This is how Gordon Shedden saw it,
00:38:47with cars scattering all over the place.
00:38:49We're understanding from Louise in the pit lane,
00:38:51it's an ignition issue for Kamish.
00:38:54Keeps cutting out,
00:38:55but the bigger problem now is they've not just got that,
00:38:57they've also got the suspension damage to sort out for race three.
00:38:59And he's going to be at the back.
00:39:01Yeah, it's a double whammy, isn't it?
00:39:02Absolutely.
00:39:03For a potential race win and a good day,
00:39:07he's now got a disastrous day.
00:39:09And that may even be the rear subframe,
00:39:11which could make it difficult to change for the race three.
00:39:14So, we'd already had one relatively lengthy safety car period.
00:39:18We now have another,
00:39:20and the number of laps to be added on is going to be limited, of course.
00:39:25So, we may not get too many racing laps out of all of this.
00:39:28Up towards Druids, there you go.
00:39:31The race order is still Jake Hill ahead of Daryl De Leon.
00:39:33Now, all of this is rather helping Jake,
00:39:35because it's taking away the number of green flag laps
00:39:38away the other side of the safety car,
00:39:40which means there's less time for him to try to hang on in there.
00:39:42Yeah, exactly.
00:39:43And if he does start to fall back
00:39:44because the others are quicker on the tyre,
00:39:46there's less time for them to pass.
00:39:48Precisely.
00:39:49But, in fact, that BMW is going well on the hard tyre.
00:39:52As I said, the lap times look pretty good.
00:39:55He's certainly managing it well.
00:39:56This has obviously helped the soft tyres
00:39:59in terms of them not being at such a risk at the end of the race.
00:40:03Here comes Dan Camish into the pit lane.
00:40:05He didn't have a long walk, did he?
00:40:06That's the only bonus out of that.
00:40:08And Louise is there,
00:40:09but I'm not sure Dan's in the mood to talk at the moment.
00:40:11Very, very disappointed indeed.
00:40:13So, Daryl De Leon in second place
00:40:15is the best of those on the soft tyre.
00:40:17He has never won a British Touring Car Championship race before.
00:40:20There he is.
00:40:21And the driver from Philippine may be on for victory.
00:40:26You never know,
00:40:26because although Jake Hill is a class act,
00:40:28he's just on the slower tyre.
00:40:30It is Adam Morgan in third place.
00:40:32He's on the soft as well.
00:40:33Pete Osborne, who runs the Alliance Racing team
00:40:36that operates the Napa Racing UK Ford,
00:40:38commiserates with a very disappointed Dan Camish.
00:40:41He just, again, can't believe the lap he has.
00:40:44Charles Rainford runs fourth at the moment.
00:40:46Ash Sasson is fifth.
00:40:47Chris Smiley is going really well in sixth.
00:40:50When the lights go out on top of the safety car,
00:40:52that's the indication that we're ready to go racing.
00:40:54There's the car to move.
00:40:55There might also be just a little bit of debris
00:40:57to be swept up as well,
00:40:58but I think that might have now been addressed.
00:41:01There's absolutely nothing you can say to a driver
00:41:03to console him in that situation.
00:41:05Nothing you will say that will actually take away the way he feels,
00:41:09which is, you know,
00:41:11it's not just this race,
00:41:13it's this weekend and potentially this year.
00:41:15because when you do lose what could have been a potential win,
00:41:19certainly a podium,
00:41:21that's a lot of points lost from this race and the next one.
00:41:25So the pack comes across the line.
00:41:28That now puts 17 laps in the book of the original 24.
00:41:34We are anticipating three being added on
00:41:37for this effectively one long safety car period.
00:41:42And we touched on Aidan Moffat a little bit earlier on.
00:41:44He's into the top ten now with the demise of Dan Cavish.
00:41:47Everybody behind shuffles up a break.
00:41:48So 25th he was on the grid.
00:41:51He managed to get himself to 20th in race one.
00:41:55And now Aidan Moffat running in tenth,
00:41:57a bit like Donington.
00:41:58He rebuilt that over the course of the races.
00:42:00A reverse engineered weekend
00:42:02in the sense that you're aiming everything
00:42:04for race two and three,
00:42:05particularly race three.
00:42:08And, you know, that's what he's trying to do.
00:42:11He's got that damage.
00:42:12As long as that bodywork doesn't start flapping,
00:42:13because remember we have
00:42:15a no bodywork flapping rule in this now.
00:42:19It looks pretty intact, doesn't it?
00:42:20So I think he's okay.
00:42:22We haven't got the coolers at the front of the car
00:42:24that we had for the hybrid system in the past.
00:42:27So that is a good thing.
00:42:28It looks pretty intact to me.
00:42:31So that is Aidan Moffat goes through.
00:42:34So we've lost Dexter Patterson.
00:42:35We have lost Max Hall.
00:42:37They were in the earlier incident.
00:42:39And then Dan Kamish's technical issue
00:42:42plus damage and a stranded car
00:42:44triggered the second safety car period,
00:42:46although it's effectively all one long one.
00:42:48We're going to go racing this time,
00:42:49we understand.
00:42:49Track is clear.
00:42:50Recovery vehicles are off track.
00:42:52And so the green flag is going to be prepared
00:42:54on the start line for the resumption of the race.
00:42:56There is Tom Ingram.
00:42:57He's on that slower, harder tyre.
00:42:59He's in 11th.
00:43:00And again, like anybody on the hards,
00:43:03willing the race to come to an end
00:43:04before he loses more places,
00:43:06more points in the championship.
00:43:07Yeah, let's see if we get this restart underway.
00:43:09Everybody's supposed to stay within two car lengths of each other.
00:43:12The speed should remain the same.
00:43:15And that's what they're doing at the moment.
00:43:16There's no accelerating and braking,
00:43:17no more weaving allowed
00:43:19until they get to the acceleration line,
00:43:21which is after this corner.
00:43:22So Jake Hill comes up towards Clark Curve,
00:43:26then in the all blue BMW,
00:43:28just behind him is Daryl De Leon's largely white example.
00:43:31This is where Adam Morgan needs to strike
00:43:32to get himself ahead of De Leon
00:43:34to be the best place of those on soft.
00:43:36And Jake Hill now accelerates away
00:43:38with everybody bunched up behind him,
00:43:40ready to go racing.
00:43:41And Adam Morgan,
00:43:42look, he's all over the back of De Leon.
00:43:43You can't overtake it until you cross the timing line.
00:43:45De Leon for the lead on the inside.
00:43:48Up the inside as well,
00:43:49goes Charles Rainford on the harder tyre.
00:43:50Daryl De Leon leads the British Touring Car Championship
00:43:52race for the first time.
00:43:54He's ahead as they get up towards Druid
00:43:55with Jake Hill on the inside.
00:43:57Rainford behind him
00:43:58and Hill goes wide
00:43:59and that forces Morgan out wide as well,
00:44:00which lets Rainford through.
00:44:02And all of a sudden,
00:44:03the man to watch is Ash Sutton,
00:44:04look,
00:44:05because he's right there with the BMWs
00:44:06and Morgan as De Leon gets away.
00:44:08The BMWs are doubly now acting as two corks
00:44:11in one big bottle
00:44:12to hold up everybody else behind
00:44:14and let De Leon get away.
00:44:15Well, Jake Hill's being obstinate.
00:44:17He wants to get as many points as he can
00:44:19and this is allowing De Leon to escape
00:44:21but it does put Hill at risk
00:44:23of being nerfed or turned round.
00:44:26There's only so much fighting you can do
00:44:27but boy, do I find the way he goes about his racing.
00:44:31Well, he's lost out to Charles Rainford as well.
00:44:33Morgan desperately wants to get past them,
00:44:34so does Sutton
00:44:35but while all of this swaddling is going on
00:44:37and look, Hill is being the sacrificial lamb for the team.
00:44:40He's sucking everybody up behind him.
00:44:41De Leon is getting away.
00:44:42Charles Rainford is now edging clear in second place
00:44:45and they are giving, through great teamwork,
00:44:48Daryl De Leon a mighty, mighty advantage
00:44:50as everybody else in the race seemingly
00:44:52is crawling over Jake Hill.
00:44:54Well, Rainford, don't forget,
00:44:54is on the same hard tie that Hill is
00:44:56so he's certainly not helping his teammates.
00:44:58Oh no, Doble got stirred.
00:45:00That was Moffat, I think,
00:45:02that just got into the back of him.
00:45:04Contact between the two,
00:45:05Mikey Doble then on Cooper Straight.
00:45:07He's not got going yet
00:45:08but he's about to be.
00:45:09There he is then.
00:45:09You can see the witness mark
00:45:10so bad, bad result for Mikey Doble.
00:45:1227 laps the new distance confirmed
00:45:15because of the safety car intervention.
00:45:16Right, the race leader, Daryl De Leon,
00:45:18out on his own,
00:45:20comes across the line
00:45:21and then in second place,
00:45:23Charles Rainford two seconds back
00:45:24in third now, Jake Hill
00:45:25and Morgan is fourth
00:45:27but that's going to change.
00:45:28Look, Morgan goes around the outside
00:45:29so now Morgan released.
00:45:31It's taken him a couple of laps to do it
00:45:32but he's on target now
00:45:33to try to gain more ground.
00:45:34Here is Sutton up the inside of Hill.
00:45:36Can't do it.
00:45:36Behind them is Chris Smiley
00:45:37in the black and red and blue restart racing.
00:45:40Hyundai, look further back.
00:45:41Sam Osborne is about to get mugged
00:45:43by Ronan Pearson,
00:45:44winner of race three here last year.
00:45:45That Toyota game well,
00:45:47clips the kerb
00:45:47but he's gone by.
00:45:49Got to say,
00:45:49that was a great restart by De Leon.
00:45:51I don't know if there would have been
00:45:53some team conversation
00:45:54on the radio
00:45:55about what was going to happen
00:45:56on the restart
00:45:57but he signals his intention
00:45:59straight away
00:46:00and went up the inside
00:46:01of Hill at Paner.
00:46:02Look at the grip advantage
00:46:04that Sutton enjoys there
00:46:05just coming out of Clearways
00:46:08and Smiley.
00:46:09The BMW is not hooking up now at all.
00:46:11But Charles Rainford's BMW
00:46:13is still going nicely
00:46:14because his last lap
00:46:15was a personal best
00:46:16and he is on that hard tyre.
00:46:18So it's De Leon,
00:46:19Rainford,
00:46:19Morgan,
00:46:20Sutton is fourth,
00:46:21Smiley is fifth.
00:46:22There they are.
00:46:23Jake Hill is down into sixth place now.
00:46:25Ronan Pearson's
00:46:25Toyota Kazoo Racing UK entry
00:46:28is in seventh place.
00:46:29Up into eighth
00:46:29is Aidan Moffat
00:46:30and ninth is about to become
00:46:32Dan Rowbottom.
00:46:33I think on the inside line.
00:46:34No, it's Sam Osborne,
00:46:35in fact,
00:46:35battling with Josh Cook.
00:46:37Rowbottom is next in the queue.
00:46:38Now for second place,
00:46:39Rainford under attack
00:46:40from Morgan
00:46:40who needs to get by
00:46:42before Sutton latches
00:46:43onto the tail of the Hyundai.
00:46:44Yeah,
00:46:44he can't afford to waste any time.
00:46:46He'll have that grip advantage
00:46:47through here
00:46:48that we saw Sutton enjoying
00:46:50but Rainford actually
00:46:51has that pretty well covered
00:46:53depending on how much boost
00:46:54they use
00:46:54as losing another place
00:46:56to James Thornan
00:46:57is Jake Hill.
00:47:00Ronan Pearson goes past him
00:47:01as into Paddock
00:47:02Adam Morgan
00:47:02gets past Charles Rainford.
00:47:04So up into second place
00:47:05goes Adam Morgan
00:47:06and that Sutton won't be long
00:47:08before he is looking
00:47:09for a way past Rainford.
00:47:10Moffat's come up
00:47:10the inside of Jake Hill
00:47:11in the background there
00:47:12so Moffat is still
00:47:13absolutely charging
00:47:14and should clear him
00:47:15as they get up to Druid.
00:47:16Morgan then up into second place
00:47:18but he's three seconds back.
00:47:19Replay here
00:47:20Aaron Taylor-Smith
00:47:20versus Michael Kreese
00:47:21going up towards Surtees.
00:47:24Kreese gets elbowed
00:47:25towards the foliage
00:47:26and Gordon Shedden
00:47:27dives up the inside
00:47:28of his teammate.
00:47:29Yeah,
00:47:30that was actually
00:47:30it was actually
00:47:31Ronan Pearson
00:47:32getting past Hill
00:47:33on the previous lap
00:47:34but yeah,
00:47:35great opportunist driving
00:47:36by Gordon Shedden
00:47:37saw that gap opening up
00:47:38for him
00:47:39and through he went.
00:47:41Race leaders then
00:47:41go over the line.
00:47:42Darrell De Leon
00:47:43still up front
00:47:43and Adam Morgan
00:47:45behind with a new
00:47:45lap record set
00:47:46by Darrell De Leon
00:47:47three and a half seconds
00:47:49to the good
00:47:49three laps to go
00:47:50he's just going to bring
00:47:51this home.
00:47:52He's driving fantastically
00:47:53and shame on us
00:47:55for not picking him
00:47:56as a potential winner
00:47:57but he was seventh
00:47:58on the grid
00:47:58don't forget.
00:48:00Ash Sutton
00:48:00throw on the inside
00:48:01of Charles Rainford
00:48:01Chris Smiley
00:48:02following the forwards
00:48:04every move
00:48:04so the door is being
00:48:05opened by Sutton
00:48:07and Chris Smiley
00:48:07tries to follow through
00:48:08didn't quite work
00:48:09getting past
00:48:10Charles Rainford
00:48:10who in a sense
00:48:12is driving even better
00:48:13in this race
00:48:13because he has such
00:48:14a good spirited
00:48:15defence on the wrong tyre
00:48:16whereas Jake Hill
00:48:17has fallen further
00:48:18back in the queue
00:48:19only one lap
00:48:20difference of boost
00:48:21Smiley now clears
00:48:22Rainford
00:48:22Moffat ought to be
00:48:23able to do the same
00:48:24as Darrell De Leon
00:48:25he's on for a maiden
00:48:26British touring car
00:48:27championship win
00:48:28and the Browns
00:48:29Hatch Indy Circuit
00:48:30lap record to boot
00:48:31there he is
00:48:32on his own
00:48:33yeah out in front
00:48:34he must be
00:48:35absolutely in love
00:48:36with this
00:48:36what a place
00:48:37to score
00:48:37your first victory
00:48:38don't want to jinx it
00:48:39he's not home yet
00:48:40but he's driving
00:48:41beautifully
00:48:42so there
00:48:43Aidan Moffat
00:48:44somebody else
00:48:45that's had a really
00:48:45impressive drive
00:48:46to get himself
00:48:47up the order
00:48:48goes ahead of Rainford
00:48:49now Ronan Pearson
00:48:50tries the outside
00:48:50and Josh Cook
00:48:51has arrived at the
00:48:52party as well
00:48:52Cook 8th
00:48:53at the start of this
00:48:54lap
00:48:54but he is not
00:48:55finished either
00:48:55reverse grid's
00:48:56going to be
00:48:57fascinating
00:48:57that's for sure

00:48:58drop downhill
00:48:58go left
00:48:59this is Cook
00:48:59Cook
00:49:00looking to get
00:49:01the cutback
00:49:02advantage
00:49:03will he get
00:49:03enough momentum
00:49:04along Cooper
00:49:05straight
00:49:05he does
00:49:06and turns

00:49:09coming out
00:49:10of Graham Hill

00:49:14Pearson
00:49:15and Jake Hill
00:49:15being roughed up
00:49:16in the background
00:49:17by Dan Rowbottom
00:49:17as over the timing

00:49:21on the circuit
00:49:21Adam Morgan
00:49:22thinking about
00:49:22what might have

00:49:24second
00:49:24and Ash Sutton
00:49:25is up into
00:49:26third
00:49:26so after
00:49:28a tough qualifying
00:49:29yesterday
00:49:29with limited boost
00:49:31he's up into
00:49:31third
00:49:31Chris Smiley
00:49:32is fourth
00:49:32Aidan
00:49:33Moffat
00:49:33is fifth
00:49:34but there's still

01:01:23so happy
01:01:23yeah credit to him and his family really
01:01:26he is buzzing
01:01:27Dan Kamish is buzzing in a different kind of way
01:01:29that was extraordinary what happened behind the safety car
01:01:32yeah real bad luck for Dan Kamish
01:01:34sad to see he had an amazing pace he was fighting
01:01:37seemingly for the lead overall at some point during that race
01:01:40and yeah a strange thing he said maybe ignition
01:01:42issue brought him to a halt
01:01:44but it's really hard as a driver behind him to know when to judge
01:01:47to do an overtake or to sit behind but yeah it just caused a
01:01:51consultiner effect but a lot of damage to the car by the look of it
01:01:54yeah okay we will talk some more a bit later in the afternoon as the
01:01:57countdown continues to the reverse grid race which will have Dan
01:02:00row bottom on pole position but right now caterums are out on track and we'll go straight
