Transcript
00:00:00I'll see you next time.
00:00:30Welcome to Brands Hatch and the second sunny weekend of the QuickFit British Touring Car Championship.
00:00:44It all got underway two weeks ago in the soaring temperatures of Donington Park and it didn't take long for one of the great touring car rivalries to be resumed.
00:00:53Welcome to Donington Park and the return of the number one competition in British motor racing.
00:01:03It's a complete reset. We all start off with zero points and I'm looking forward to a great year.
00:01:08It's rather nice to be back, isn't it?
00:01:10Blast off. Good getaway by Sutton. Into Hollywood they go. Sutton up the inside of Kamish and he takes the lead.
00:01:17Ingram goes second on the inside coming down to the old hairpin.
00:01:20Kamish is in the pits. And he's got a punch on the left front.
00:01:23Here they come up towards the chequered flag. Round one. Won by Ash Sutton at Donington.
00:01:28Cook alongside Hilt for third place. Inside line for the old hairpin.
00:01:32Cookie goes through. Great move.
00:01:34There is Cook's problem at the front left punching.
00:01:37Ash Sutton wins round two of the championship at Donington.
00:01:40Come on. Let's go.
00:01:43Number six. Tom Chilton is on pole position.
00:01:47Tom Ingram forces open the door. Through he goes. Sutton goes through.
00:01:52Tom Chilton takes race three at Donington.
00:01:59I'm champion Ash Sutton with victory in the first two races and a podium in the third.
00:02:05But his great rival Tom Ingram was never far away.
00:02:07Three podiums for Ingram. Is this going to be the big battle of the season?
00:02:12And then there was Ingram's teammate Tom Chilton.
00:02:15A popular winner of the reverse grid race.
00:02:17And they're the top three in the championship at this early stage.
00:02:22Ash Sutton has a seven point lead over Ingram with Chilton in third.
00:02:26Then comes Dan Kamish and Dan Rowbottom.
00:02:29But it was a poor start for the defending champion Jake Hill.
00:02:32Who suffered handling problems in the BMW and is back in sixth.
00:02:36And the early situation in the other competitions.
00:02:39Team Virtu and Napa Racing take a joint lead in the team standings.
00:02:43While Accelerate Hyundai have a one point lead over Alliance Ford in the manufacturers.
00:02:49Among the independents, Chris Smiley had two overall top ten finishes.
00:02:54So he heads from Mikey Doble in the independent drivers.
00:02:57But Doble has taken Power Max Racing to the top of the independent teams competition.
00:03:03And Ronan Pearson and Daryl De Leon both made good starts in the Jack Sears Trophy.
00:03:07The rookie championship that Doble won last year.
00:03:11Pearson leads the way.
00:03:13So the second weekend and Brands Hatch hosting rounds four, five and six of the 30 race campaign.
00:03:19And we'll be back here in October for the finale to the season on the Grand Prix circuit.
00:03:23But today it's the short Indy circuit.
00:03:26The perfect place for defending champion Jake Hill to regain his form.
00:03:30But Ash Sutton is a proven winner around the 1.2 mile layout.
00:03:36So good morning.
00:03:37Welcome to Brands Hatch.
00:03:38This is one of the great auditoriums in motorsport.
00:03:42And when the sun shines, Tim Harvey, and when the touring car racers are in town,
00:03:47it becomes a very special place indeed.
00:03:49It is, you know, Steve, this is the spiritual home of the British Touring Car Championship.
00:03:53The first ever championship was decided here.
00:03:56And we top and tail our season with races here.
00:03:59And when the sun's like this, the crowds come out.
00:04:02And I'm sure the racing's going to be every bit as hot as the weather today.
00:04:05Now, we left Donington in another heat wave two weeks ago.
00:04:08We had Ash Sutton, Tom Ingram setting the standard.
00:04:11We had Jake Hill struggling for form in the BMW.
00:04:14And we thought maybe that's the story for the season.
00:04:16It all changes so quickly.
00:04:19Yeah, you can never write anybody off.
00:04:20Those top drivers and teams, they know how to get the job done.
00:04:24And as we'll see in a minute, the BMWs are back this weekend and are a major contender.
00:04:29And it's great because we didn't want this race for the championship to be a two-horse race
00:04:33between Sutton and Ingram, as great as that rivalry is.
00:04:37We need the camishes.
00:04:38We need the hills in that fight as well.
00:04:41Yeah, and Jake Hill on pole position will tell the story of qualifying in just a few minutes' time.
00:04:45So many other ingredients today.
00:04:47We've got the high temperatures, soft tyres.
00:04:51We've got a newly resurfaced part of the circuit out there.
00:04:54We've got boost reduction, boost penalties.
00:04:57So much is up for grabs today.
00:04:59It is.
00:05:00Yes, but the real story this weekend is tyres, Steve, because last year and in previous years,
00:05:05the prime tyre for two races has always been the medium, with the option being the soft.
00:05:10This weekend, it's the soft tyre that's the prime tyre for two races,
00:05:13and two steps harder, the hard tyre, for the option tyre,
00:05:17which means there's a big difference between the speeds on the two tyres,
00:05:20and also it's very hot, making that soft tyre last in these temperatures,
00:05:25and with the new tarmac, it's going to be a really tough job.
00:05:28Yeah, so much to discuss in our build-up ahead of the first race,
00:05:31which is about 30 minutes away.
00:05:33One other change, we've got Nick Halstead back on the grid from here at Brands Hatch,
00:05:38and he's a perennial battler at the back of the field,
00:05:41and he's gone alongside Mikey Doble at PowerMax Racing in the Vauxhall,
00:05:46and outside their garage at the moment are J.D. Edwards and Paul O'Neill.
00:05:52Thanks, Steve. Yes, we're next to his hard tyres, actually.
00:05:55We were talking about tyres just a minute ago.
00:05:58It's going to be a very interesting day, but great to see Nick Halstead back, isn't it?
00:06:02And he brings quite a lot to the Championship.
00:06:04Yeah, I mean, he started the year saying that he was not coming back.
00:06:07He was sitting out, and we're already in the second round,
00:06:09and he's back again in a different car, different team, but he's a fan favourite.
00:06:13Everyone loved to see him back, and he's very realistic in his approach,
00:06:17very likeable character, and very good for the Championship in many ways.
00:06:21And it's another car on the grid, so you can't complain about that.
00:06:23Exactly, yeah. Have you been in one of his crazy kart races yet?
00:06:26No, I've managed to dodge that for now.
00:06:28Whenever I was racing, I always declined it because I didn't want to get injured before race day.
00:06:32But now that I'm not racing, I'm probably going to get arsed at some point.
00:06:35But, yeah, like I say, he brings a lot of fun to the Championship.
00:06:37He said he was learning the car yesterday, getting to grips with it.
00:06:41It's not the easiest track to do so because it's so tight around here,
00:06:43but smile on his face and always happy.
00:06:45Yeah, definitely.
00:06:46Tom, talk to me about the season opener.
00:06:48Is it just a two-horse race?
00:06:50Are people going to come back in contention?
00:06:52It's interesting times, isn't it?
00:06:53Yeah, I mean, we've already seen the BMWs are now back in the game
00:06:57from what we can tell from yesterday.
00:06:59I saw Jake arrive here on, I think, Thursday, Friday,
00:07:01and he was a little bit sort of trudging along.
00:07:03He's got a bit more of a skip in his step now.
00:07:05I don't want it to be a two-horse race.
00:07:07I want there to be as many cars in the fight as possible.
00:07:09It's still very early days.
00:07:11People are going to have peaks and troughs.
00:07:13This is seemingly BMW's sort of circuit this weekend,
00:07:17but Ingram's looking strong and looking very fast as well.
00:07:20Yeah, what can you tell from that Donington opener, Ash Sutton?
00:07:25He looked like he won those races, but he wasn't the fastest car.
00:07:28No, I think Napa and Virtue have very fast cars over a lap,
00:07:33but they do it in very, very different ways.
00:07:35Virtue seem to have a very, very fast car,
00:07:37but Napa have a good chassis and good car setup.
00:07:40So they're balancing each other out,
00:07:42but that means that every track we go to,
00:07:45it's going to favour each car very differently.
00:07:47So interesting to see.
00:07:48Obviously, Ash is slightly further down today,
00:07:51but purely because of boost.
00:07:52But qualifying was interesting,
00:07:53and we'll have more on that a little bit later.
00:07:55But today's racing is going to be frantic.
00:07:57It's going to be good.
00:07:58Would you be worried about this heat,
00:07:59not as a driver, but as a person who's driving on some black tyres?
00:08:03Would you be worried?
00:08:04Yeah, I think Tim's just mentioned it a little bit.
00:08:06The heat, the soft tyre, managing them.
00:08:08We've obviously got new tarmac as well.
00:08:10It's not just a simple day ahead.
00:08:11They've obviously got different tyre compounds
00:08:13and probably warmer weather than we're used to
00:08:15at this early stage of the year.
00:08:17So it's about managing the tyres
00:08:18and using them to your advantage.
00:08:20It's not going to be an easy day for everyone,
00:08:22but the cream always rises to the top.
00:08:24And I think the names that have been around long enough
00:08:26will know how to manage those tyres as best they can.
00:08:28Forget about the tyres.
00:08:29What about as a driver in this heat?
00:08:31This is incredible, isn't it?
00:08:33Yeah, I don't know if the crowd realise
00:08:36that it's warm for us stood here.
00:08:37In the car with your suit on and your layers on,
00:08:40it's hot and it all comes straight from the engine into the car
00:08:43and we're going to have some very, very red-faced drivers
00:08:46after these races.
00:08:47Super, for the right reasons, hopefully.
00:08:49Anyway, back to you guys.
00:08:52Thanks, Paul.
00:08:52Thanks, Jay.
00:08:53So many concerns.
00:08:54I'm down the pit lane
00:08:55and so much to enjoy up there on the banking
00:08:57in the sunshine here at Brands Hatch.
00:08:59Let's show you what happened in yesterday's qualifying.
00:09:02For the first time this season,
00:09:04there was boost reduction for the championship leaders.
00:09:06It was sure to be very close
00:09:08and David Addison has the story of yesterday's action.
00:09:14With a bigger grid than we had at Donington,
00:09:17bolstered by a second PowerMax racing Vauxhall Astra
00:09:19for Nick Halstead,
00:09:21very hot temperatures and some track resurfacing,
00:09:24qualifying was always going to be busy,
00:09:25especially given that drivers had boost allocated
00:09:28on championship positions.
00:09:30Q1 was red flagged after Aidan Moffat
00:09:32had a big moment in his BMW at Paddock,
00:09:35clouding a curve and gravitating to the gravel.
00:09:37He was out of qualifying and will start last,
00:09:40but also out in Q1 were Josh Cook and Gordon Shedden,
00:09:43both lacking outright pace.
00:09:46Championship leader Ash Sutton was another to go early
00:09:48as the effects of just one second per lap of boost were felt.
00:09:53Tom Ingram was fortunate to get through though,
00:09:55as he had missed the red light at the pit lane tech area
00:09:58and therefore lost his times.
00:09:59He was saved by the Moffat-induced red flag
00:10:02and was able to go again to be fastest in Group 1,
00:10:05while Jake Hill topped Group 2.
00:10:07Into Q2 and it was the impressive Charles Rainford
00:10:10who was fastest from Tom Ingram and Jake Hill.
00:10:12While in Q3, the front of the grid was fourth.
00:10:15Mikey Dobble's Vauxhall Astral was sixth
00:10:17behind Dan Kamish in the Seoul,
00:10:18Napa Racing Ford to get through.
00:10:20Tom Ingram's Hyundai was fourth
00:10:22with just three seconds of boost per lap.
00:10:24So that was a mega effort.
00:10:25Lining up behind teammate Adam Morgan,
00:10:27who was delighted with third.
00:10:30After our issues at Donington with the track limits
00:10:32and qualifying,
00:10:34to come out here today and put it P3,
00:10:36I mean, don't get me wrong,
00:10:37I've still got the full deployment of boost,
00:10:40but we have to come here and make the most of it.
00:10:42And I think throughout the day we've done that,
00:10:44we've achieved it.
00:10:45So, yeah, phase one done.
00:10:47Charles Rainford was delighted too
00:10:49after a tough baptism at Donington.
00:10:51Second on the grid was an impressive performance
00:10:53by the series newcomer.
00:10:55From where we're at Donington to now,
00:10:56the car's so different to drive.
00:10:58So, just amazing.
00:10:59Congratulations, Jake.
00:11:00One, two, it's just a complete difference
00:11:02to Donington, amazing.
00:11:03But fastest was Jake Hill,
00:11:05the reigning champion,
00:11:06edging it by just 21 thousandths of a second
00:11:09to go fastest and to start race one on pole.
00:11:12Delight and relief came in equal measure.
00:11:15That was a vent four, wasn't it?
00:11:16You know, but I just threw the world in it.
00:11:19I thought it might be on the cards,
00:11:20you know, in Q1 when obviously we topped our group
00:11:23with Charles hot on my heels
00:11:25and I thought, come on, let's have a go.
00:11:27So, thrilled.
00:11:28So, Jake Hill's title defence really starts here.
00:11:32He's got ten laps of foos to use
00:11:34and the maximum anybody can have is 12.
00:11:36So, he's well-placed to convert that pole position
00:11:38into a race win.
00:11:41And Paul and Jade have now joined us
00:11:42outside the BMW garage.
00:11:45Extraordinary qualifying yesterday.
00:11:47We'll talk in a little bit more detail
00:11:48about what's happened at BMW,
00:11:50but is it just kind of a eureka moment?
00:11:52It looked like a long-term problem at Donington.
00:11:55Yeah, and it's extraordinary what you can do
00:11:57in two weeks' time, isn't it?
00:11:58But the team have really looked at the analysis
00:12:00of Donington.
00:12:02They've worked out what they need to do
00:12:03with the weight distribution of the car.
00:12:05They've moved things around.
00:12:06They've added weight in various places.
00:12:08They've also come to a track
00:12:10that favours rear-wheel drive.
00:12:11Don't forget, Turkington was on pole
00:12:13and won two races last year.
00:12:15It's also a hot day on soft tyres.
00:12:17So, all that plays into their hands.
00:12:18But yes, they have transformed the car.
00:12:21I do think this pace will carry on
00:12:23at rear-wheel-drive friendly cars.
00:12:25And hats off to them.
00:12:26Yeah, fantastic individual performances
00:12:28in qualifying yesterday.
00:12:29Charles Rainford, sensational.
00:12:31Yeah, absolutely.
00:12:31He was impressive in pre-season testing.
00:12:34You know, Donington was tough for all of them
00:12:36at WSR, and he's now really showing
00:12:38what he's capable of.
00:12:39And he seems to be smiling his whole way through it.
00:12:42He was really, really pleased
00:12:43with the performance yesterday.
00:12:44And all BMWs look fast.
00:12:46Blessed mate Aidan Moffat.
00:12:47He was quick as well.
00:12:48Small error.
00:12:49He's kicking himself.
00:12:50But he'll be strong today
00:12:51and moving forward, no doubt.
00:12:53Much was made of the boost reduction
00:12:54and the effect that would have
00:12:56on the likes of Ash Sutton.
00:12:57And it clearly did.
00:12:58But Tom Ingram only had three seconds of boost
00:13:01and you would hardly notice.
00:13:03Unbelievable.
00:13:04But we've seen that from Tom Ingram before.
00:13:06You know, having limited boost
00:13:08or hybrid, as Tim still likes to call it.
00:13:11But the boost has been great.
00:13:14But I do think it's a circus-specific thing as well
00:13:16with the new tarmac that's been laid down.
00:13:19But that lap is one of the best Tom Ingram laps
00:13:22I've seen because he had all his times deleted
00:13:24in part one and then just went bang,
00:13:26straight out, and he was quick.
00:13:28So that just shows me, again,
00:13:29that chassis is unbelievable.
00:13:31And Tom Ingram, we just know, is brilliant.
00:13:33Yeah, but what does it also tell you
00:13:34about his mindset for the championship battle
00:13:37that lies ahead?
00:13:38Well, absolutely, no question.
00:13:39He's after one thing and that's the championship.
00:13:42You know, he knows how to get the job done.
00:13:45Smarting from losing it a bit last year.
00:13:47He knows he's got a good car underneath him.
00:13:50When you hit the ground in the early part of the season
00:13:52and you can feel you've got a winning car,
00:13:54it doesn't half motivate you.
00:13:56And he'll be up for some great results this weekend.
00:13:59After all the frustrations of Donington,
00:14:01what do you think this pole position
00:14:03means for Jake?
00:14:05A great deal.
00:14:06I spoke to Jake throughout the Donington weekend
00:14:08and he was trying to be professional
00:14:11and trying to keep his head up,
00:14:12but it was tough for him.
00:14:13He was really, really struggling.
00:14:14And although he got seemingly on paper
00:14:17some good results,
00:14:18him personally knew it wasn't enough.
00:14:20You know, he was having to work really hard for them.
00:14:22And so this weekend coming in,
00:14:23I actually mentioned earlier
00:14:24that I saw Jake walk in the circuit,
00:14:26I think Thursday or Friday,
00:14:28and he sort of was trudging in.
00:14:29And I was thinking, oh no,
00:14:30have we got another weekend like that ahead?
00:14:32But seemingly not.
00:14:33He's now on pole.
00:14:34This is his home circuit.
00:14:35He's got friends and family all around him.
00:14:36He's going to be a very, very strong contender all day today.
00:14:40Yeah.
00:14:40Let's not forget about the championship leader,
00:14:42Ash Sutton,
00:14:42back in 13th,
00:14:43which with one second of boost
00:14:46was just about all he could really achieve.
00:14:47But he'll be fighting from that 13th position.
00:14:51What exactly will be his attitude
00:14:52for the race to come today?
00:14:54He's been talking with Louise.
00:14:56So Ash, P13 in qualifying yesterday,
00:14:58not what was planned,
00:14:59but not totally unexpected either.
00:15:02No, I think realistically,
00:15:03we would have liked to have been inside the top 10.
00:15:06If you said Tom would sat back with us,
00:15:08then we'd be going where it is.
00:15:10But the only reason we feel the way we do ultimately
00:15:12is because our closest rival is a little bit further up.
00:15:15But it's fine.
00:15:16It's British touring cars, isn't it?
00:15:18We all know how quickly things can change.
00:15:19So yeah, looking forward to the day.
00:15:21We've got a...
00:15:22I think we're going to play the backwards game today.
00:15:24We're going to be doing a completely different strategy
00:15:26to what we normally do.
00:15:28So it's entirely down to the boost, isn't it?
00:15:30So it's kind of doing its job,
00:15:31but it's making it more fun for us,
00:15:33but a bit harder work for you.
00:15:34Yeah, for sure.
00:15:35We're coming here with one second of boost.
00:15:37It has a deficit for sure.
00:15:40There's, I would say,
00:15:41three and a half to four tenths of lap
00:15:43that we're lacking
00:15:43compared to someone with full deployment.
00:15:45Obviously, our closest rivals are slightly ahead.
00:15:48They've got a little bit more than us,
00:15:49but the gap is probably bigger than what we wanted.
00:15:51But ultimately, we come here
00:15:53saying we want to be inside the top ten
00:15:54just outside of that.
00:15:56So it is what it is.
00:15:57I take it when you say
00:15:58you're playing the backwards strategy,
00:15:59you're going with a harder tyre for race one.
00:16:01Today is going to be all about tyres
00:16:03and about tyre management, isn't it?
00:16:04Yeah, it's the first time
00:16:05we've seen this big delta now.
00:16:07Obviously, we saw it a couple of times last year
00:16:08having the hard tyre and soft tyre.
00:16:10We're going the hard tyre for race one.
00:16:12So depending on who's on the same tyre around us,
00:16:15depends on our progress
00:16:16or how far we drop back.
00:16:17But then, yeah,
00:16:18the game is to put the soft on for race two and three
00:16:20and push our way forwards.
00:16:22What's your thinking in terms of
00:16:23what it's going to cost you in race one
00:16:24having the harder tyre on?
00:16:26That totally comes down to who's on it around us.
00:16:28If there's a gaggle of us all on the hard tyre,
00:16:30especially if there's some in front,
00:16:31then my plan would be to try and move forward.
00:16:33If I'm surrounded by soft tyres,
00:16:34a bit of a different story.
00:16:35So where we end up
00:16:37and what we want to achieve
00:16:38is completely up to others ultimately.
00:16:41But what we're looking at is
00:16:42we'll take the pain.
00:16:43We've got minimal boost,
00:16:45put the hard tyre on,
00:16:46get all the pain out of the way.
00:16:47A bit like what we used to do
00:16:48back when it was the ballast days
00:16:49and you'd lose all of the pain early on
00:16:52and have a good day from that point on.
00:16:53So that's the plan.
00:16:54Fingers crossed it goes to plan.
00:16:55The plan works.
00:16:56See you out there.
00:16:57Cheers.
00:16:58So Ash Sutton on the hard tyres,
00:16:59which I think we all would have guessed.
00:17:01Just explain, Tim,
00:17:03what is exactly meant by
00:17:04the soft, hard delta
00:17:06and what do you think Ash might achieve
00:17:08with those hard tyres,
00:17:09not only in race one,
00:17:10but in the three races to come?
00:17:12It's purely lap time, Steve.
00:17:13The hard tyre is two stages harder than the soft.
00:17:16We normally use the medium.
00:17:18But the lap time difference between the two
00:17:21is about eight tenths of a second,
00:17:23even around this short circuit.
00:17:24So a huge difference.
00:17:26How far he can get, as he said,
00:17:28depends on how many cars he's racing against
00:17:30on those tyres.
00:17:31But his strategy is that the ones at the front
00:17:33will probably start on the soft,
00:17:35so they'll then have to use the hard
00:17:36in race two or three.
00:17:38The first three will always have to use it
00:17:40in race two.
00:17:41There might be a little interesting battle
00:17:42for who's fourth, actually, in race one.
00:17:44That's something to watch.
00:17:45But it's a big difference in the lap time.
00:17:47So he's going to get his pain out of the way,
00:17:49come through race two and three on soft.
00:17:51Yeah, and clearly the boost penalties are working
00:17:54because we've got a mixed-up grid
00:17:55and the crowd will love it.
00:17:57Yeah, absolutely.
00:17:57Like, we've seen Ash is about where he should be
00:18:00with it in terms of boost for qualifying.
00:18:02Ingram's obviously done a very, very good job as well.
00:18:04And that's what Ash was sort of saying
00:18:06on the camera there,
00:18:07that he is okay with where he is.
00:18:09He would have felt better
00:18:10if Ingram was a little bit closer to him.
00:18:12But essentially, the programme is working
00:18:14and adding in the tyres as well,
00:18:15it's keeping everyone close.
00:18:17It's exactly what we all want
00:18:18and what everyone on the banks want to see as well.
00:18:21Yeah, what a great day lies ahead.
00:18:22Yeah, it's going to be a lot of overtaking.
00:18:24It's going to be fantastic
00:18:25watching how those three races pan out.
00:18:27And this crowd is big
00:18:28and the heat worries me.
00:18:30It really does.
00:18:31I'm not driving, obviously.
00:18:31I know Tim was just saying off camera,
00:18:33I shouldn't be moaning about the heat driving,
00:18:35but them tyres,
00:18:36they're going to get a real beasting.
00:18:38He's always moaning about something.
00:18:40Let's take a look at the timetable
00:18:43that lies ahead.
00:18:45Round four of the British Touring Car Championship.
00:18:48That's at 11.30
00:18:49and they're back on track
00:18:50at 5 past 2 and 10 past 5.
00:18:52We'll also have support racing coming up
00:18:54from the Porsche Sprint Challenge,
00:18:56the Caterham 7s
00:18:57and the Virtu Mini Challenge Trophy.
00:19:00But round four of the QuickFit
00:19:02British Touring Car Championship
00:19:03coming right up.
00:19:04After the break,
00:19:06we're in amongst it,
00:19:06hearing from some of the drivers
00:19:08as they meet and greet the fans.
00:19:10Plus, we'll take a closer look
00:19:11at the defending champion,
00:19:13Jake Hill,
00:19:13and the challenges that he faces.
00:19:16Back in a few minutes.
00:19:23Not long till we get the action underway
00:19:24here at Brands Hatch,
00:19:25round four of the QuickFit
00:19:27British Touring Car Championship.
00:19:28But a while ago,
00:19:29the fans had a chance to get up close
00:19:31and meet their favourite drivers
00:19:32and somewhere in amongst the throng
00:19:35was Louise Goodman and Paul O'Neill.
00:19:37Sunshine in the pit lane
00:19:42here at Brands Hatch.
00:19:44We've just,
00:19:44it's a lovely scene actually,
00:19:46people coming from the outside
00:19:47of the track,
00:19:48running down the hill
00:19:49to get in here
00:19:49for what is always
00:19:50a busy session,
00:19:52autograph session.
00:19:53So let's,
00:19:53shall we go for a wonder?
00:19:54Let's go for a wonder.
00:19:55But first of all,
00:19:56Louise,
00:19:56you look amazing.
00:19:57You look like my sister,
00:19:58Mel C.
00:19:58I mean,
00:19:58that is the best get up
00:20:00I've ever seen.
00:20:01That's the best you've ever looked.
00:20:02Anyway,
00:20:02let's crack on.
00:20:02I'm getting so many comments on this.
00:20:04I'll take looking at your sister any day.
00:20:06She is a cool bird.
00:20:07Right,
00:20:08let's go in and have a word
00:20:09with Sam.
00:20:11Excuse me
00:20:12while you were,
00:20:13Sam,
00:20:14hello.
00:20:16Sorry to disturb your autograph session,
00:20:17but I had to ask you,
00:20:18what a fantastic day
00:20:19you had yesterday.
00:20:20Yeah,
00:20:20we were all right,
00:20:21weren't it?
00:20:21everything seemed to come together
00:20:23and unfortunately,
00:20:25the red flag
00:20:26meant one of us laps didn't stand,
00:20:28which we were a bit gutting,
00:20:29so it kind of screwed up our strategy.
00:20:32But no,
00:20:32yeah,
00:20:33we're a really good quality Q1
00:20:35and just didn't quite have the pace in Q2.
00:20:38But yeah,
00:20:39good.
00:20:40I mean,
00:20:40it looked at one point
00:20:41like you were going to be on
00:20:41for your best ever,
00:20:42but nonetheless,
00:20:44you've given yourself,
00:20:45you've got a lot of the job done
00:20:47for race one,
00:20:48haven't you?
00:20:48Yeah,
00:20:49it should be a little bit easier today
00:20:51than at Donington,
00:20:52so not quite as much work to do,
00:20:54so,
00:20:55but yeah,
00:20:55still,
00:20:55it's going to be one of them things
00:20:56where we're just going to have to
00:20:57get his head down
00:20:58and chase,
00:20:59really,
00:21:00so,
00:21:00yeah.
00:21:01Good stuff.
00:21:02Well done,
00:21:02you.
00:21:02Where's Paul gone?
00:21:04I'm over here,
00:21:04Lou.
00:21:04I'm over here.
00:21:05How's it going?
00:21:06It's like a sea of yellow and blue here.
00:21:08It's literally like a football crowd,
00:21:09so many people
00:21:10and everyone's like,
00:21:11don't speak to me,
00:21:12don't speak to me.
00:21:12Oh,
00:21:12I'm going to speak to you,
00:21:13ladies.
00:21:14First of all,
00:21:15how are you?
00:21:15I'm good.
00:21:16I'm really good.
00:21:17It's lovely.
00:21:17Why is this the team
00:21:18that you support?
00:21:19Alliance,
00:21:20Racing,
00:21:20Napa,
00:21:21you can't.
00:21:21I'm going to start.
00:21:22Yeah,
00:21:22I mean,
00:21:23I followed Camish beforehand,
00:21:24but yeah,
00:21:25no,
00:21:25we just love Napa.
00:21:26Right,
00:21:26there's four drivers
00:21:27in that team.
00:21:28Who is your favourite?
00:21:30Dan,
00:21:31Camish,
00:21:32Robo,
00:21:33Sutton,
00:21:34Osborne.
00:21:35Oh,
00:21:35well,
00:21:35that actually worked quite well,
00:21:37didn't it?
00:21:38Amazing,
00:21:38but it's great to see so many people
00:21:40supporting different teams,
00:21:42but especially these guys,
00:21:43they really put it on the line,
00:21:44don't they,
00:21:44Lou,
00:21:44and get out there
00:21:45and do stuff for the crowd as well.
00:21:47Did you prime them
00:21:47while I was chatting with Sam?
00:21:49Did you prime them?
00:21:49Absolutely not.
00:21:50Ask the floor manager.
00:21:51No,
00:21:51I didn't.
00:21:52Come on,
00:21:52let's go down this way.
00:21:53Down to where,
00:21:56who've we got down here?
00:21:58Ah,
00:21:58so we've got,
00:21:59what a good,
00:21:59where's Port?
00:22:00He's gone again.
00:22:01Oh,
00:22:01there you are.
00:22:02These guys had a good day yesterday,
00:22:03didn't they?
00:22:04Amazing.
00:22:04I was very impressed with Adam Morgan.
00:22:06Hello,
00:22:06guys,
00:22:07how are you?
00:22:07You okay?
00:22:08How are you?
00:22:08Spider-Man.
00:22:09Yes.
00:22:10He's good.
00:22:11Good lad.
00:22:12We like that.
00:22:12Yeah,
00:22:13they had a great day.
00:22:13Chilton,
00:22:14all these guys have had a good,
00:22:17brands or up to now,
00:22:18a good Donington.
00:22:19So,
00:22:20yeah,
00:22:20it's looking good.
00:22:21This car in my eyes is the fastest.
00:22:23It really is.
00:22:24Somebody wanted to stop you for a conversation there,
00:22:26didn't they?
00:22:26Hi,
00:22:26guys.
00:22:27Too many mates down here.
00:22:29I want to see if we've got time just for a very quick word
00:22:31with Tingram,
00:22:33who,
00:22:33sorry,
00:22:34little one,
00:22:34look at your fantastic hair.
00:22:37Lovely.
00:22:39Thomas.
00:22:40Oh,
00:22:40sorry.
00:22:41But again,
00:22:42what?
00:22:44Come and have a look at the,
00:22:45can we see these shades?
00:22:47How cool are they?
00:22:48How cool are you?
00:22:50And what a decent day you had yesterday,
00:22:52didn't you?
00:22:54In the end,
00:22:55yeah,
00:22:55very nearly not so after Q1.
00:22:59Yeah,
00:22:59really good.
00:23:00Really,
00:23:00really good day in the end.
00:23:01So,
00:23:01yeah,
00:23:01we're kind of where we want to be.
00:23:02We're in the mix.
00:23:03We're towards the sort of the leading pack.
00:23:05So,
00:23:06we just need to try and get three good results today
00:23:08and keep it going.
00:23:09Did you not get to keep those glasses?
00:23:10Did she give them to you for a picture
00:23:11and then taking them away again?
00:23:12I think we're going,
00:23:13are you taking photos of everyone wearing them?
00:23:15Yeah,
00:23:15just going to take photos of everybody wearing them.
00:23:17So,
00:23:18it's only a brief visit.
00:23:19Fair enough.
00:23:19Okay,
00:23:19let's end our little grid walk then
00:23:21with,
00:23:22uh,
00:23:24Ashley,
00:23:24you either get me or Paul,
00:23:25or do you want Paul?
00:23:26Where's Paul?
00:23:27Oh,
00:23:27I'll come on,
00:23:27I'm going on,
00:23:28I'm coming.
00:23:28One sec,
00:23:29one sec,
00:23:29one sec,
00:23:29one sec,
00:23:29sorry.
00:23:29Look at those glasses.
00:23:31Who's it these?
00:23:33They're yours now.
00:23:33Smile for a picture.
00:23:34Like Elton John.
00:23:37Like Elton John.
00:23:39Sorry,
00:23:39but they really sell you as well.
00:23:41Back to you guys.
00:23:42I think they were yours.
00:23:44Well done.
00:23:45And the local lad,
00:23:46Jake Hill,
00:23:46I'm sure,
00:23:47was also out among the fans.
00:23:49He,
00:23:49of course,
00:23:49realised a lifelong dream
00:23:51of becoming champion here
00:23:53seven months ago.
00:23:55Wasn't the ideal start
00:23:56to his defence at Donington,
00:23:57but qualifying yesterday
00:23:59shows that the champion
00:24:00is back.
00:24:01Or so it seems,
00:24:02he's been talking
00:24:03with Louise.
00:24:06Hey champ.
00:24:07Hi guys.
00:24:08You alright?
00:24:08We're good darling,
00:24:09how are you?
00:24:09I'm good thanks Lou.
00:24:11Right,
00:24:12let's do this.
00:24:13The 2024
00:24:14Quick Fit
00:24:15British Tory car champion
00:24:16Jake Hill.
00:24:18Champion.
00:24:20Yes!
00:24:22It's the biggest
00:24:23rollercoaster
00:24:24emotionally
00:24:24I've ever
00:24:25beaten through.
00:24:27You're leading it,
00:24:28then you're not
00:24:28leading it again,
00:24:29Tom's taking it over
00:24:30and then you go
00:24:31into the last round
00:24:31a point apart
00:24:32and we managed
00:24:33to take it.
00:24:35It was just
00:24:35amazing memories
00:24:36and I will look back
00:24:37on that day forever
00:24:38as blessed day
00:24:39of my life.
00:24:42What are the memories
00:24:43of this?
00:24:46I was severely
00:24:47hungover
00:24:48and you found it
00:24:49hilariously funny.
00:24:50I still find it
00:24:51hilariously funny.
00:24:52Yeah, exactly.
00:24:54We saw some great
00:24:55footage of you
00:24:56across the winter.
00:24:56You were doing
00:24:57your favourite thing
00:24:58which is basically
00:24:58driving cars,
00:24:59weren't you?
00:25:00I was, yeah.
00:25:01I mean,
00:25:01I've been a busy boy.
00:25:03You know,
00:25:03the historic racing
00:25:03has taken me
00:25:04around the world.
00:25:05I went to Australia
00:25:06which was amazing
00:25:07for the first time.
00:25:09I've been to Sweden,
00:25:09nice driving
00:25:10as I do every year
00:25:11and I've also been
00:25:13racing a current
00:25:14Ferrari GT3 car
00:25:15in Europe as well
00:25:16so it's been
00:25:16action packed.
00:25:18It's who I am,
00:25:20driving racing cars.
00:25:21I can't think
00:25:22of doing anything else
00:25:23and to be honest,
00:25:24I'm probably no good
00:25:25at doing anything else.
00:25:26I just love
00:25:26all forms of motorsport.
00:25:29Donington was a bit
00:25:29of an eye-opener,
00:25:30wasn't it?
00:25:31You've got a little bit
00:25:31of ground to find
00:25:32at the moment.
00:25:33We do, yeah.
00:25:34We rocked up at Donington
00:25:34and it was clear
00:25:35there's quite a deficit
00:25:36from us to, you know,
00:25:39the Napa Ford
00:25:40and to obviously
00:25:40the Hyundai as well
00:25:41of Tom.
00:25:42So we have got
00:25:43a chunk to find.
00:25:44We think we know
00:25:45what the issue is
00:25:45and we're trying
00:25:46our best to rectify it.
00:25:47I got the feeling
00:25:48it was a bit
00:25:48of a surprise to you.
00:25:50I knew the car
00:25:51I wasn't totally
00:25:52happy with it
00:25:53but it's the, you know,
00:25:55eight tenths to a second
00:25:56we've got to find
00:25:57and it's the ease
00:25:58of it as well.
00:25:59You know, I'm struggling
00:26:00like mad to do that time
00:26:02to only be eight tenths
00:26:03off of the frontrunners
00:26:05and those guys
00:26:06are doing it with ease.
00:26:08Were you happy
00:26:09with the results
00:26:10that you got
00:26:10because you came
00:26:10away two, four places.
00:26:12It was just, you know,
00:26:13three mature drives,
00:26:14you know, stayed out
00:26:15of trouble
00:26:15and maximised
00:26:16what I could
00:26:17out of the car
00:26:17and honestly,
00:26:18I went away
00:26:19feeling happy
00:26:20with my performance,
00:26:20you know,
00:26:21and that's all I can do
00:26:22is do the best I can
00:26:23and I know that
00:26:24all the engineers
00:26:25and everyone at the team
00:26:26are doing everything
00:26:27they can.
00:26:28How has the hunger
00:26:30and the desire
00:26:31for a championship
00:26:32changed?
00:26:33There's nothing like
00:26:34fighting for your
00:26:35first championship
00:26:35especially when you've
00:26:36been so close
00:26:37for so long,
00:26:38you know,
00:26:39it's been like three
00:26:39years in a row
00:26:40I've been in the top
00:26:41three now
00:26:41and so nearly done it.
00:26:43When you're up
00:26:43against the competitors
00:26:44like we are,
00:26:45they're some of the
00:26:45best race drivers
00:26:46in the world
00:26:47let alone in the UK.
00:26:48To conquer it,
00:26:49yes,
00:26:50it took a lot of hunger
00:26:51and a lot of drive
00:26:52and it hasn't disappeared
00:26:53it's just
00:26:53the objectives
00:26:54changed slightly
00:26:55we still want to win it
00:26:56but it's just,
00:26:57you know,
00:26:57we're going about it
00:26:58in a slightly different way
00:26:59and I would just like
00:27:01a slightly quicker car
00:27:02that's all.
00:27:03And as Jake Hill's car
00:27:07is wheeled out
00:27:08onto the apron
00:27:09here of Brands Hatch
00:27:10a quick chance
00:27:11to talk with
00:27:12Dick Bennetts
00:27:12of West Surrey Racing
00:27:14and try and sum up
00:27:15the work that's gone on
00:27:16over the course
00:27:17of the last two weeks
00:27:18and the clear breakthrough
00:27:20you seem to have made.
00:27:21Yeah,
00:27:21it's great.
00:27:23I must be honest
00:27:24there's a lot of hard work
00:27:25going on
00:27:25and a lot of head scratching
00:27:27going on
00:27:27and the guys
00:27:29have done a great job
00:27:30to turn around
00:27:31Jake,
00:27:33you know,
00:27:33back on the front row pole
00:27:34and Charles,
00:27:36you know,
00:27:36his only second ever
00:27:37touring car race
00:27:38to be second on the grid
00:27:39and Daryl,
00:27:40you know,
00:27:4119 years old
00:27:42and I feel a bit
00:27:43sorry for Aidan
00:27:44the possibility was there
00:27:45but a very small mistake
00:27:47from him
00:27:47cost him dearly
00:27:48but the car's
00:27:49competitive now
00:27:50so we've just got to see
00:27:52how it goes
00:27:52through the heat
00:27:53in a race.
00:27:53What a change
00:27:54from two weeks ago.
00:27:55Was there one moment
00:27:56when the team thought
00:27:57we've got it,
00:27:58we've cracked it?
00:28:00I can't tell you
00:28:01my words I had
00:28:02driving home
00:28:02from Donington
00:28:03because
00:28:03two and a half hour
00:28:05drive by myself
00:28:06but no,
00:28:08yeah,
00:28:08there's been
00:28:09there's several things
00:28:11been changed
00:28:12since Donington
00:28:13and
00:28:13the mood last night
00:28:15was a lot happier
00:28:16than what it was
00:28:16on Saturday night
00:28:17at Donington
00:28:18so we're on the right
00:28:19track now.
00:28:21Yeah,
00:28:22back to some basics
00:28:23for some things
00:28:23but no,
00:28:24the cars are good.
00:28:26Great teamwork,
00:28:27great team effort.
00:28:29Your man's ready to go
00:28:29we'd better not
00:28:30take up your time
00:28:31any longer.
00:28:32All the best,
00:28:33Dick.
00:28:33Final thoughts
00:28:34from our three here.
00:28:36Is it this man's
00:28:37to lose?
00:28:39Yes,
00:28:39race one definitely
00:28:40we can see
00:28:41he's on the soft tyre
00:28:42that's the best tyre
00:28:43for the car
00:28:44he's on the front row.
00:28:45I would like to say
00:28:46I think that Jake
00:28:47handled himself
00:28:47like a real champion
00:28:48at Donington
00:28:49you know,
00:28:49to come in as
00:28:50reigning champion
00:28:51find you haven't got
00:28:52the best car underneath you
00:28:53take away a couple
00:28:54of fourth places
00:28:55handle yourself
00:28:56with dignity
00:28:57he was superb there
00:28:58now he's reaping the wards.
00:28:59Okay,
00:29:00we're all set to go
00:29:00we'll take a quick break
00:29:01and then the cars
00:29:02will be out on the grid
00:29:03with Louise
00:29:04we'll get all the
00:29:05pre-race opinion.
00:29:05An amazing day
00:29:16at Brands Hatch
00:29:16not just the weather
00:29:17but the racing
00:29:18that lies ahead as well.
00:29:19The defending champion
00:29:20Jake Hill
00:29:21is on pole position
00:29:22ahead of round four
00:29:23of the Quick Fit
00:29:24British Touring Car Championship
00:29:25and Louise
00:29:26is down on the grid.
00:29:27Thank you Steve
00:29:29welcome to our
00:29:30first grid walk
00:29:31of the day
00:29:31here at Brands Hatch
00:29:32and it's the first ever time
00:29:34on the front row
00:29:35at his home track
00:29:37for Jake Hill
00:29:38in fact his sister
00:29:39is celebrating the fact
00:29:40as well
00:29:40Ellie
00:29:40who if you just
00:29:42flip the camera around
00:29:43is holding the board
00:29:44Ellie is normally
00:29:45Aidan Leach's board girl
00:29:46but she decided
00:29:47she was going to jump ship
00:29:48and celebrate the moment
00:29:49of her brother
00:29:50being on pole position.
00:29:52It is a special moment
00:29:53isn't it
00:29:53at your home circuit?
00:29:55It's really nice Lou
00:29:56yeah
00:29:56I mean
00:29:56first of all
00:29:57what a fantastic day
00:29:58we've got
00:29:58you know
00:29:59and so many fans
00:30:00have come out today
00:30:01you know
00:30:01it's great to see them all
00:30:02but yeah
00:30:03pole position
00:30:04it's a nice feeling
00:30:05to have
00:30:05especially after
00:30:06the car feeling
00:30:07not quite so good
00:30:08at Donington
00:30:09it's big strides forward.
00:30:11Must be a big relief
00:30:12for you
00:30:12because the frustration
00:30:13was written
00:30:14all over your face
00:30:14pretty much across
00:30:15the weekend
00:30:16at Donington
00:30:18where have you
00:30:19found the time
00:30:20in the car?
00:30:21Honestly
00:30:22the engineers
00:30:22have just been working
00:30:23flat out
00:30:24to try and get
00:30:24a better balance
00:30:25weight balance
00:30:26in the car
00:30:27which they've achieved
00:30:28you know
00:30:28I mean
00:30:29by all means
00:30:29it's not perfect
00:30:30you know
00:30:30we've not
00:30:31managed to secure
00:30:33all of our issues
00:30:34that we've had
00:30:35going to Donington
00:30:36but
00:30:36it is an awful lot better
00:30:39you know
00:30:40the car is now
00:30:41feeling like
00:30:41it's got some bite
00:30:42to it
00:30:42and some grip to it
00:30:43so happy place
00:30:44I noticed
00:30:46actually I could tell
00:30:47it's your first time
00:30:48on pole here
00:30:48because it took you
00:30:49three goes
00:30:49to actually get
00:30:50onto the grid slot
00:30:51didn't it?
00:30:51I know
00:30:51I'm going to need
00:30:52Dom and Craig
00:30:53to try and line me up
00:30:54a bit better
00:30:54because that was
00:30:55like four goes
00:30:55at that
00:30:56it's no good
00:30:56it's a slightly
00:30:57tricky grid here
00:30:58though isn't it
00:30:59because it's off camber
00:31:00and you're kind of
00:31:01on the upward slope
00:31:02as well
00:31:02you've done many
00:31:04starts in your time
00:31:05but how much
00:31:06do you have to
00:31:06take that into
00:31:07consideration
00:31:07when it comes
00:31:08to getting off
00:31:09cleanly?
00:31:10Yeah I mean
00:31:10first of all
00:31:11you've just got to
00:31:11make sure you're
00:31:11not creeping
00:31:12you know
00:31:12and when you're
00:31:13on any sort
00:31:13of hill
00:31:14it can be tricky
00:31:15just to keep
00:31:16hold of the car
00:31:17but obviously
00:31:18you want to
00:31:19maximise your drive
00:31:20because yeah
00:31:20Charles is on
00:31:21a bit less
00:31:22of a slope
00:31:22and he's in
00:31:23a BMW still
00:31:24just like myself
00:31:25so there's every
00:31:26chance that he
00:31:27could get just
00:31:27as good a launch
00:31:28if not better
00:31:28than mine
00:31:29Have a great race
00:31:31fingers crossed
00:31:31we will be talking
00:31:32to you again
00:31:32at the end of it
00:31:33as Jake mentioned
00:31:34Charles his teammate
00:31:35Charles Rainford
00:31:36new to the team
00:31:38this season
00:31:38new to a British
00:31:39Touring Car Championship
00:31:40this season
00:31:41but I mean
00:31:42he's just excited
00:31:43to be here
00:31:44in the first place
00:31:45but to be on
00:31:46the front row
00:31:47of the grid
00:31:47really is
00:31:48something special
00:31:50he was saying
00:31:51yesterday that
00:31:52he was on cloud
00:31:52nine
00:31:53are you still up
00:31:53there or have
00:31:54you come down
00:31:54to a sort of
00:31:55cloud eight
00:31:55or seven yet
00:31:56yeah definitely
00:31:57I've just asked
00:31:57the boys to get
00:31:58me some tissue
00:31:58because I've got
00:31:59a nosebleed
00:31:59I'm so high
00:32:00up the grid
00:32:00no
00:32:01you know what
00:32:02yeah it's just
00:32:03incredible really
00:32:04you know I used
00:32:04to watch this
00:32:05with my dad
00:32:05so to be sat
00:32:06here with my
00:32:07teammate just
00:32:07there and
00:32:08Tom Ingram
00:32:09mirrors is pretty
00:32:10incredible
00:32:10I've even got a
00:32:11good luck charm
00:32:12my little friend
00:32:12what is the
00:32:13good luck charm
00:32:14he's like a
00:32:15little sticker
00:32:15Hydro Racer
00:32:16very kindly
00:32:17sent me a bottle
00:32:18for this weekend
00:32:19so I'll stick that
00:32:20sticker on
00:32:20it looks quite
00:32:21friendly
00:32:21I mean the pole
00:32:23is sorry the
00:32:24front row start
00:32:26is something special
00:32:26but this car was
00:32:28quick from the
00:32:28moment you rolled
00:32:29out yesterday
00:32:29wasn't it
00:32:30so how confident
00:32:31were you that a
00:32:32result like this
00:32:33was on the cards
00:32:34yeah I was hoping
00:32:35for a better
00:32:36kind of weekend
00:32:37really other than
00:32:37Donington Park
00:32:38so we've been
00:32:40obviously working
00:32:40a lot on the car
00:32:41and I've been
00:32:41working on my
00:32:42driving my driving
00:32:43style wasn't quite
00:32:44right but it seems
00:32:44to be a lot better
00:32:45now so just
00:32:46take each race as it
00:32:47comes I know I'm
00:32:48going to learn a lot
00:32:48in this race
00:32:49so I'm sure the guys
00:32:50behind me will try
00:32:51to be teaching me
00:32:51a thing or two
00:32:52how concerned are
00:32:54you about kind of
00:32:54keeping yourself in
00:32:55check I mean you've
00:32:56obviously you've done
00:32:56lots of racing but
00:32:57this is a potentially
00:32:58big moment isn't it
00:32:59are you aware of that
00:33:00or just trying to
00:33:01treat it like any
00:33:01other race
00:33:02yeah this is the
00:33:04biggest moment so
00:33:05far you know
00:33:05it's the biggest
00:33:07moment in my racing
00:33:08career that I've done
00:33:09to be on the front
00:33:09row in a British
00:33:10during car race
00:33:10so you know what
00:33:11I'm just going to
00:33:12enjoy it I'm so
00:33:13lucky to be here
00:33:14and yeah just
00:33:15going to enjoy
00:33:15every minute of
00:33:15it good stuff
00:33:17good stuff that's
00:33:17what we like to
00:33:18hear out to enjoy
00:33:19himself out to get
00:33:20a good result as
00:33:20well I have no
00:33:21doubt at all and
00:33:23our I think we've
00:33:24got time for a word
00:33:25with another man
00:33:26who's definitely out
00:33:26for a good result
00:33:27and he got one
00:33:29yesterday third
00:33:30place on the grid
00:33:32and it was a good
00:33:34day for you yesterday
00:33:35but it's all about
00:33:35having a good day
00:33:36today really isn't
00:33:37it yeah absolutely
00:33:38yeah yesterday went
00:33:39really well for us
00:33:40we're at the right
00:33:41end of the grid
00:33:42we're in the mix
00:33:43so today is where
00:33:44we get the points
00:33:45so hopefully we'll
00:33:46have three good
00:33:47races in the points
00:33:48and finish it off
00:33:50finish the weekend
00:33:50off well
00:33:51is that what it's
00:33:52all about for you
00:33:52just getting solid
00:33:54results because
00:33:55you're relatively new
00:33:56to this car and in
00:33:56fact relatively new
00:33:57to being back in a
00:33:58in a front wheel
00:33:59drive car as well
00:34:00yeah it's all about
00:34:01bagging the points
00:34:02you know Donington
00:34:03Donington didn't
00:34:04quite go as well as
00:34:05we hoped we had a
00:34:06bit of a poor
00:34:06qualifying and a poor
00:34:07race one so now
00:34:08I'm trying to claw
00:34:09back points which in
00:34:10this championship is
00:34:11very difficult to do
00:34:11so we'll we'll see
00:34:13what we can do
00:34:14elbows out and
00:34:15we're looking ahead
00:34:16elbows out that's
00:34:17exactly how we like
00:34:18it right we will let
00:34:19the drivers get their
00:34:19heads out we are
00:34:20going to head for a
00:34:21break we come back
00:34:22race one will be
00:34:23getting underway
00:34:24an outstanding day's
00:34:33racing is set to get
00:34:34underway here in the
00:34:35sunshine of Brands
00:34:36Hatch with round four
00:34:37of the quick fit
00:34:38British touring car
00:34:39championship and in
00:34:40the commentary box are
00:34:41Tim Harvey and David
00:34:42Addison and in very
00:34:45warm temperatures on a
00:34:46gloriously sunny day at
00:34:47Brands Hatch we are ready
00:34:49to go racing and as
00:34:49ever Tim there's a lot to
00:34:50unpack here resurfacing the
00:34:52allocation of the boost
00:34:54and the temperature and
00:34:55tyres as well yeah and
00:34:56how will the BMWs go
00:34:57well not surprisingly
00:34:59David the front half of
00:35:00the field have virtually
00:35:01all gone for the soft
00:35:03tyre the faster tyre but
00:35:04they will have to manage
00:35:06that being careful on the
00:35:07boost coming out of the
00:35:08corners not to destroy
00:35:09the tyres that's on the
00:35:10front wheel drive cars so
00:35:12we'll see how this race
00:35:13pans out and Jake Hill
00:35:14with very nearly the full
00:35:15allocation of boost
00:35:16starting on pole and in a
00:35:18rear wheel drive car that
00:35:19normally makes good
00:35:20starts anyway he's in the
00:35:21pound seat yeah I mean
00:35:22you almost bet your
00:35:23house on Jake getting
00:35:24this race win I'll be
00:35:25very interested to see
00:35:26how Giles Rainsford
00:35:27adapts to his front row
00:35:30starting position he's
00:35:32got a very level head on
00:35:33his shoulders I don't
00:35:34think he'll be trying to
00:35:35challenge Jake but how
00:35:37will he deal with the
00:35:38likes of Adam Morgan and
00:35:40Tom Ingram behind him
00:35:41so we'll see in fact the
00:35:43place to finish if you're
00:35:45on the front here if you're
00:35:46not going to win the race
00:35:47the place to finish is
00:35:48fourth so you can start
00:35:49race two on the soft tyre
00:35:50with the three in front of
00:35:51you on hard so don't be
00:35:52surprised to see a little
00:35:54battle potentially at the
00:35:55end of this race for
00:35:56fourth place yeah the
00:35:57battle not to be fair it's
00:35:58going to be interesting to
00:35:59see how that pans out
00:36:00towards the very end
00:36:01because the regulations
00:36:01say if you're in the top
00:36:02three you've got to carry
00:36:04the hardest available tyre
00:36:06into the next race now
00:36:07one driver about to start
00:36:09his 300th British Touring
00:36:10Car Championship race is
00:36:11Josh Cook who's going to
00:36:12be from 17th on the grid
00:36:14Josh tough day yesterday
00:36:15wasn't it yeah it was
00:36:17it wasn't how we expected
00:36:20Saturday to go but you
00:36:23know we tried a few
00:36:23things deviated from what
00:36:25we know and we're
00:36:27comfortable with in the
00:36:27pursuit of something more
00:36:29so it's not paid off but
00:36:31reverting back to something
00:36:32a little bit more
00:36:34comfortable for today and
00:36:35hopefully we can make
00:36:35some progress one big
00:36:37talking point yesterday
00:36:38was this resurfacing work
00:36:39it's made in a fast
00:36:40circuit is it helping the
00:36:42Honda it's definitely
00:36:44changed what you're
00:36:45looking for in terms of
00:36:46balance you know the
00:36:46second half of the
00:36:47circuit particularly
00:36:48clearways used to be
00:36:49very unstable on the
00:36:51rear so it's taken away
00:36:52that element so you can
00:36:54sort of direct your car
00:36:55in a little bit more
00:36:56of a different direction
00:36:57but yeah I prefer it
00:36:58I think we've done a
00:36:58good job looking forward
00:37:00to seeing how the
00:37:02tarmac holds up for
00:37:03some late lunges up
00:37:04into clearways
00:37:05and the half tyre
00:37:06you're using as well
00:37:07is that to get it out
00:37:08of the way or do you
00:37:08genuinely think that's
00:37:09going to be the one to
00:37:10have in this race
00:37:10well we thought
00:37:12obviously a pretty
00:37:13disappointing qualifying
00:37:15position we'd get that
00:37:16out of the way with
00:37:17the hard time which
00:37:17we think is going to
00:37:18be slower so yeah
00:37:20just get it all out
00:37:20the way and focus on
00:37:21race two and three
00:37:22excellent Josh good
00:37:23luck
00:37:23cheers
00:37:24so yeah Josh
00:37:26Cook yesterday having
00:37:27a tough day at the
00:37:28office and let's have
00:37:29a look at the grid
00:37:30and you'll see where
00:37:30he is in relation to
00:37:31everybody else
00:37:32Jake Hill the man on
00:37:33pole position and
00:37:34his teammate Charles
00:37:35Rainford lining up with
00:37:37him at the front of
00:37:38the grid and those
00:37:39BMWs both on the
00:37:40soft tyre Adam
00:37:42Morgan is going to
00:37:43start third and Tom
00:37:44Ingram is fourth on
00:37:46the grid then you've
00:37:48got Dan Camish
00:37:48starting fifth Mikey
00:37:49Doble will go from
00:37:50sixth Sam Osborne
00:37:51seventh he's best ever
00:37:52qualifying great effort
00:37:53yesterday ahead of
00:37:55Dan Lloyd who had a
00:37:55tough Donington but
00:37:56bouncing back ahead of
00:37:57Darrell De Leon and
00:37:58Ronan Pearson winner here
00:38:00last year remember in the
00:38:01Hyundai Chris
00:38:01Miley 11th Stephen
00:38:02Jelly whose birthday it
00:38:03is tomorrow is 12th ahead
00:38:05of Ash Sutton with a new
00:38:06number in livery
00:38:07celebrating a hundred
00:38:07years of Napa and then
00:38:09Dan Robottom alongside
00:38:10ahead of Tom Chilton
00:38:11and Michael Kreese
00:38:12then you've got Josh
00:38:13Cook with Aaron Taylor
00:38:14Smith on row 9 row 10
00:38:15is Max Hall a winner
00:38:16here in minis and James
00:38:17Dawlin a winner here in
00:38:18Porsche's alongside then
00:38:19it's Nick Hamilton and
00:38:20Dexter Patterson Nick
00:38:21Halstead and Gordon
00:38:22Shedden 24th and Aidan
00:38:24Moffat after being in the
00:38:25gravel in Q1 is 25th some
00:38:27big names out of position
00:38:28yeah very much not
00:38:30surprisingly Josh Cook
00:38:31and Ash Sutton starting
00:38:33further back using that
00:38:34hard tyre but the
00:38:35front 10 all on the soft
00:38:38let's see how they control
00:38:40their racing instincts and
00:38:42look after those soft
00:38:43tyres we saw punctures at
00:38:45Donington and this is an
00:38:46even worse case scenario for
00:38:48tyre wear because of the
00:38:50heat the tight nature of the
00:38:52brand's Indy Circuit and
00:38:53here you're coming up to that
00:38:54new tarmac see how black it
00:38:56is that black new tarmac is
00:38:58running at some 9-10 degrees
00:39:00hotter than the rest of the
00:39:02the tarmac so it's we've got a
00:39:04triple whammy poor old Mickey
00:39:05Buckner from Goodyear must be
00:39:07holding his breath for this race
00:39:08Gordon Shedden there tough day
00:39:10yesterday for him 24th in the
00:39:12Speedworks run Toyota there is a
00:39:13little bit of tangential good news
00:39:15for Speedworks the director of
00:39:17motorsport at Speedworks Danny
00:39:18Buxton busy celebrating a world
00:39:20record from his son who did part
00:39:23run in 16 minutes and 55 seconds
00:39:25now if you think part run 5k just
00:39:27under 17 minutes not that quick let me
00:39:28tell you that Seb Buxton is only 10
00:39:30years of age it's a world record it
00:39:32is as impressive and depressing to
00:39:34the rest of us in equal measure but
00:39:36well done to Seb Buxton whether he
00:39:39ever turns into motor racing and is
00:39:40as quick as he is on two legs we'll
00:39:42wait and see but
00:39:43well Danny's obviously decided it's
00:39:45cheaper to get running than it is in
00:39:46carting sensible dad yes yes he's no
00:39:49mug is he well done Seb Buxton
00:39:51crikey very proud dad and let's see
00:39:53what other results Speedworks can
00:39:55haul out of this race Ronan
00:39:56Pearson the best on the grid of the
00:39:58four of them made and Moffat on the
00:39:59hard tire you've just been with as he
00:40:00slotted into place at the back so it is
00:40:02round four of the quick fit British
00:40:04touring car championship it is a hot
00:40:06sunny day at Brands Hatch it is a
00:40:08resurfaced track in part the red lights
00:40:10are on and we are racing with a great
00:40:12start made by Jake Hill who is away like
00:40:14the proverbial stab rat to lead up
00:40:16towards Paddock for the first time with
00:40:17Charles Drakeford getting a good launch to go
00:40:19second and Tom Ingram comes up to have a go
00:40:21round the outside of Adam Morgan for third as they
00:40:23turn through Paddock and it is Ingram who goes
00:40:25right round the outside of brave pass Mikey
00:40:28Doble's on the outside of Dan Camish look as they come up towards
00:40:30Druids Mikey Doble gets ahead of the Ford tries to stand his ground on the outside line look coming downhill Sam Osborne is right with them Camish on the outside
00:40:39Doble gets a bit stuck behind Adam Morgan but the Vauxhall is just going to come out ahead of the Ford of Camish
00:40:45yeah good driving there by Ingram round the outside and Doble Camish is still fighting it out side by side as they go through 30s they're still side by side in coming into the shot now in two clearways and Camish has gained it by having the inside and teammate Osborne pulling him through
00:41:01well exactly replace one Ford on the inside with another Mikey Doble is still in this sort of a rolling start formation Sam Osborne comes up on the inside heading up towards Paddock Dan Lloyd drops back a little bit Ash Sutton is already up to ten three places he's gained on the first lap he's gained great guns
00:41:16but Ingram is absolutely flying despite the formation start by the two BMWs and hats off to Charles Rainford for getting a great getaway under pressure from the front Ingram is immediately onto his tail for second place
00:41:31now we haven't really touched on the allocation of boost but just quickly the relevant ones up front Jake Hill's got ten laps on which he can use the boost Tom Ingram has only got six and Dan Camish has eight so Tom Ingram who is already right on the tail of Rainford for second place
00:41:45it's going to wait till the end presumably to use that boost just in case there's a late race safety car what he's doing now is on natural Hyundai pace
00:41:52yeah well what he did show in qualifying is that he doesn't need a lot of boost to do the lap time which is great news for him it'll also keep those tyres in good shape
00:42:02big move on the inside there that's Dan Lloyd going eighth at the expense of Daryl De Leon look the restart racing Hyundai number one two three at the inside of the almost all white BMW Ash Sutton right there behind
00:42:1313th he started and Ash currently in tenth and bear in mind that he's only got five laps on which he can use the boost as the championship leader
00:42:20and if you're not recognising Ash Sutton's car it's because it's in a new livery for this weekend to celebrate a hundred years there it is a hundred years of Napa stunning livery he's also got the helmet and overalls to match
00:42:33new livery new number Mikey Douglas switches sides gets up the inside of Sam Osborne and he's going to get that pass done Daryl De Leon is all over the back of Dan Lloyd behind as they come up towards the timing line and we understand that Dan Lloyd is under investigation for possibly a full stop will keep you posted he's just gone over the line in eighth place but if you bang five seconds on here he's going to tumble down the order especially at this stage when they're all tightly packed there are the leading BMWs it is Jake Hill up front and the margin was six tenths
00:42:51as they came across the line and Dan Lloyd five second penalty for a false start
00:42:58that's a shame but look at the front Charles Rainford has soaked up that early pressure from Igram and is if anything catching up with Horton Hill in fact he has the fastest lap on the last lap Charles Rainford
00:43:09and you talk about Ash Satton he's also the leading driver on the hard tyre at the moment from Chris Smiley look back that is from Josh Cook's car and behind him is Aaron Taylor Smith so right now Josh Cook has put himself a little further up the order he's on the hard tyre as the leaders go by up towards Panic Hill band now so we're currently working lap number five and
00:43:39in his hill from Rainford as Dan Lloyd bites the curve on the inside of Panic but he's all over the back now of the forward look of Sam Osborne Dan Lloyd was just fractionally ahead when they came across the line but he put the penalty on as well he's going to tumble even further back never mind what Osborne has been able to do on the circuit seven tenths of a second is the margin now between the top two last time around hill quicker than Rainford in fairness you would anticipate it he's far more used to a WSR run and built BMW touring car than Charles Rainford in only his second
00:44:08VTCC event yeah but look I can't praise Charles Rainford enough he's hanging on matching for pace
00:44:16Hill and look he's absolutely flying he looks fantastic he looks absolutely at home in this car yes he's come from a rear-wheel drive Porsche but to step into this car and run at the front of this field is hugely impressive
00:44:29and he's done a new lap record not just the fastest lap but with the cars being lighter now with that hybrid and this resurfaced part
00:44:37of the track giving more traction a new lap record to Charles Rainford and that is quite something right he's staying with his teammate he's got a little bit more boost to use two more laps worth
00:44:45but they both got to be mindful of the charging Ingram the Hyundai's look so quick at Donington they look so quick here this weekend now okay
00:44:53the grid may not show that but you have to bear in mind partly the knockout system partly the amount of boost you're allowed through qualifying depending on what you did at Donington but now we're seeing Ingram absolutely charging Adam
00:45:05this is Tom Chiltern's view but he's a long way back
00:45:14yeah he is there's an element of tyre management already going on
00:45:18as we see looking up to the inside this is on board with Josh Cook and he's got trouble from Taylor Smith
00:45:28Taylor Smith he has indeed and then James Dawlins so the one motorsport Honda currently is in 16th place and that's not where Josh needs to be
00:45:37not only because it's a long way down but also because he's out of the point but this is lap 7 out of 24 and if the soft tyre starts to struggle
00:45:45then those cars on the hard tyre should be able to buy back places replay here of Ronan Pearson's Toyota diving up
00:45:51the inside of Michael Kreese nice move that was a great move and he made it stick didn't run wide look at the lights flashing as drivers are on the boost
00:46:00coming down the start finish line Ingram is regrouping a little bit at the moment but there is definitely an element of tyre management going on
00:46:08certainly for the soft tyres not for someone like Ash Sutton who as you say needs the hard tyre runners
00:46:14his uh his last lap time was uh a 48-4 the leaders doing 48-0 it's about half a second quicker
00:46:21see Aidan Moffat getting up past Tom Chilton both on the hard tyre Aidan Moffat for the back of the grid up into 19th
00:46:27Gordon Shedden started 24th he's only up to 23rd Gordon is still struggling
00:46:32yeah well we heard various reports about uh Damper problems in qualifying or this and that and the other but
00:46:38the pace hasn't come in this first race has it no absolutely there are the leaders with Ingram then
00:46:43closing up onto the back of Ray for four tenths of a second and now Tom Ingram's last lap quicker than
00:46:49the two ahead of him uh now he's still got six laps of boost to use Jay Hill has got six laps of boost
00:46:56to use as well and Charles Rainford has got eight more to use Adam Morgan has got a full 12 still to go
00:47:02and he's in fourth place so he's saving it to the very end so it looks like Hill's used four laps of
00:47:08boost just to get a little bit of a gap uh knowing that he had more than the others anyway um but uh he
00:47:14hasn't established a huge gap and they've all got plenty of boost left to come yes 7 10 to the second
00:47:20is all it is now let's see as they come out of Clark Kerb to the eye he looks to have gained a little bit of
00:47:24ground on this lap but it could be because Ingram looks closer to Rainford Morgan in four falling away a
00:47:30little bit but still getting a good haul of points he seems much happier Adam Morgan in a front wheel
00:47:34drive car than he has in the BMWs of recent seasons 50s Camish Doble is sixth now Sutton still 10th
00:47:41his last lap a 48-3 and a 47-9 from Hill the margin between a hard and a soft lap time is coming down
00:47:49that's Aidan Moffat ahead of us you're on board with Chilton that's where Moffat spent qualifying in
00:47:53the gravel and he has a big moment again just cuts across in front of Chilton but they then lose places
00:47:58don't they to the Toyota then yeah that was a good save but not where you want to be out wide the track is
00:48:04quite dirty out wide um and he got got dragged into the gravel but interesting the top eight cars are
00:48:11virtually all doing exactly the same lap times within a tenth of a second which is why i believe there's
00:48:16an element of tyre management going on well the last lap of the race has just been the best by Charles
00:48:22Rainford as he comes across the line another new lap record and Charles Rainford now has got the gap
00:48:26down to just 0.4 of a second against Jake Hill so Charles Rainford certainly wants to be on the podium
00:48:32but he's already thinking maybe that that top step view is better than the view for the second step yeah but
00:48:37maybe he's using a bit too much tyre to do it we'll see it may be a little bit of uh gung-ho from uh the
00:48:44rookie but it's a hugely impressive performance so the last lap he did was a 47.6 Ash Sutton did a 48 and a
00:48:51half so nine tenths difference remember that Sutton is on the half-tar the best placed this is Gordon
00:48:57Shetton's on board view as he sees Max Hall getting up the inside of Tom Chilton at Druid's that while
00:49:02the prize has opened the door Shetton goes through Chilton having already been delayed remember by
00:49:06Moffat coming across the front of him yeah good move by Max Hall though nice dying on the inside nice and
00:49:12clean another rookie making a big impression in the BTCC so Jake Hill stretching the margin to 6.10s of
00:49:18course Charles Rainford has this in a sense double edge situation he wants to uh catch Hill in doing
00:49:25so of course he pulls away from Ingram which is therefore keeping him in second place the closer he
00:49:30gets to Hill if he then gets a bit stuck that enables Ingram to come back at him and he has to go defensive
00:49:34so a lap on the boost gets him away yeah stretches that margin again he's just got to manage that
00:49:40boost obviously uh uh the engineers can uh give some advice on how many laps have been used but not
00:49:46when they're on it so they can't use it unless they can see the other car actually on it the man i think
00:49:51will be very happy is actually Adam Hoffman sitting in fourth place because he's not under too much
00:49:56pressure he can let the others fight it out manage his tyres and if he finishes in fourth he'll be the
00:50:01first car on soft to race to absolutely so and likes front wheel drive uh Dan Rowbottom is there
00:50:07going over the line in the Napa Racing UK Ford just ahead of Josh Cook they're both on the hard tyre
00:50:14and they're also fighting for the final point it just adds to Gordon Shannon's woes 22nd he runs now
00:50:19he's been given a driving standards flag for track limit fences
00:50:23when it's on your weekend yeah i was just gonna say when it's not going well it uh it really snowballs
00:50:28doesn't it yeah now uh Adam Morgan has just done the absolute best of anybody in the first sector
00:50:33that's the first half of the lap so there he is in full place looking good he's certainly shaken off
00:50:38camish as the soft uh tire shot cars preserve the entire life Morgan using all the boost on that lap
00:50:45it didn't turn out to be a quicker lap than Charles Wainford's earlier best though but he's very much in touch
00:50:50and again to go back to what we were saying about managing the boost and the gaps Morgan trying to
00:50:54stay ahead of camish to therefore be the best of the uh driver from soft on the grid for race two remember
00:51:00the top three have to lose the hard tyre but it shows the boost is very effective to the tune of a couple of
00:51:05two or three tenths of a second he did his personal fastest lap did Morgan on that last lap using that
00:51:11move so managing the boost is very important it is indeed as you look there at Chris Smiley and
00:51:17Stephen Gelli this is for 12th and 13th places Chris Smiley's Hyundai topped fp2 but then he had a
00:51:23little touch of understeer the team was saying after the uh qualifying session so perhaps where he
00:51:28expected to be but he can say 11th on this very compact and very tight grid that was not a bad effort
00:51:33we've already got to lap 15 as the door is opened and Stephen Gelli acquainting himself again with
00:51:38front wheel drive machinery has a look up the inside in his Honda versus Hyundai as they come
00:51:42across the line behind the pair of them is Michael Kreese ahead of the pair of them it is Ronan Pearson at
00:51:47the best of the Toyota Gazoo Racing UK entries there are two more diving into Paddock where you've got
00:51:51James Dornan and Aaron Taylor-Smith squabbling over 17th uh 16th and 17th places with Aaron with uh Dan
00:51:59Robottom just behind them he's not really enjoyed those hard tyres at all is he no Robottom's dropped back yes on
00:52:05that lap because he was ahead of Cook remember so Cookie now in 15th and in the points Toyotas are side by
00:52:10side and ATS gets back ahead of Dorlin
00:52:16Robottom behind he may have had a moment somewhere which is why he's lost so much track position look at
00:52:20Morgan all of a sudden he is right onto the back of Ingram we've been talking about how well Adam Morgan has
00:52:26been going and he's certainly been using the boost of late because he's still got nine laps of it to use but
00:52:30he's right up now with the top three he is I'm just wondering what he's actually thinking in terms of where
00:52:36he wants to finish and how much boost he wants to use pretty much equidistant the front four aren't
00:52:42they but I think they're just trying to get to the last few laps before they uh show all of their
00:52:48pace on the tyres um smiling we were watching him just now um fighting off but he's actually on the
00:52:54second runner on the hard tyres Nick Hamilton in replay having a moment at Clark Curve bouncing back
00:53:00onto the road and there you see the returning Nick Halstead just going past him Nick Halstead racing here
00:53:06last week in the McLaren trophy Europe twice a class winner with Tom Holland had a good uh good day
00:53:11good weekend in McHanston so Tom Ingram under attack from Adam Morgan now is Tom Ingram thinking about this and is he pondering the fact that he has less boost than his teammate so were he to let Adam
00:53:22more can go he wouldn't have to worry about the hard tyre in the next race I'm sure that Tom and Spencer Aldridge
00:53:27his engineer have already had that discussion and this might be one that Tom is quite happy to let go
00:53:33yes we might see the slowest last lap from either because they haven't got camish very close to the
00:53:38behind so but they could be slowing down each of them trying not to finish third or it could be a ridiculous
00:53:43situation to watch but that's the way the uh regulations are set hopefully they'll just race to the end well wait and see uh
00:53:50takes you back to the early days of reverse grids doesn't it Jason Plato at Thruxton trying to go as
00:53:54slowly as possible so he would be on pole on the reverse grid uh again you see what's the drivers that
00:53:59just want to result or are thinking long term about the day and a long term about the championship so
00:54:03there are the good days running together the uh accelerate cars that come out of the Team Virtue stable
00:54:12and it is Hill still leading by seven tenths of a second from Charles Rayford and then it's Tom Ingram
00:54:16third Adam Morgan fourth big gap back uh three seconds behind them is Dan Camish uh we have had history
00:54:23of course in temperatures of four focuses having punctures around the brands hatching the circuit so maybe
00:54:28Dan Camish he's just being ultra cautious and banking the points he can and looking further down
00:54:32and Hayden Mocklund and Dexter Patterson this Scottish fight for 19th place well so far Jake has
00:54:39Jake Hill has controlled this race uh remember this was his first ever pole at brands hatch that he had
00:54:45here he had his first podium in BTCC here at brands hatch as well Nick Hamilton has pitted after his
00:54:52gravely moment uh driving standards flag now for Aaron Taylor-Smith for track limits Paddock Hill band
00:54:57out of which they have just come Graham Hill band into which they will turn at the bottom of this hill
00:55:01uh are the two key areas here for running wide there's a nice curb here that's going to invite to your
00:55:06open arm to run wide onto it but if you do then that might be a track limit offence Dan Lloyd still running
00:55:12eighth on the road but that five second penalty will be applied post-race it's going to drop him down
00:55:17the aura so others will gain as a legacy of that just looking at lap times uh last time round
00:55:23Rainford was quickest to the front to it uh basically a 48 dead and looking at Sutton he's doing 48-7 so
00:55:32there's still that uh sort of half three quarters of a second gap in pace yeah that lap of Sutton's four
00:55:38tenths slower than his earlier best so you're looking at the leaders where Jake Hill looks to have all
00:55:43this under control for two BMWs with five laps of boost available to them respectively so they're on
00:55:49equal footing there and then behind the two Hyundai Tom Ingram Adam Morgan they are also with five
00:55:55more laps of boost to use we are on that number 20 out of 24 it's been a clean green race so far this is
00:56:02the fourth round of the championship only once this year have we had the safety card deployed and you
00:56:06look here at the fight between Dan Lloyd Sam Osborne Darrell De Leon seventh eighth ninth on the track but of
00:56:11course Osborne and De Leon will gain courtesy of the five second penalty for Dan Lloyd's false start
00:56:16yeah and a fantastic qualifying from Sam Osborne he was actually only knocked out of uh the second uh
00:56:22stage of qualifying by teammate Kamish uh but he's really going well this year the relationship with uh Rory
00:56:28Butcher helping him and his engineer injured as well really working very well indeed that's right his best
00:56:35ever qualifying yesterday Sam Osborne was pretty buoyed by that and he's racing well also so you can see he's
00:56:40getting stuck in against Lloyd defending from De Leon as there are the leading BMWs now on that 21 so Jake
00:56:45Hill who was a winner the last time we came to Browns of course the day that he took the title uh 20 race wins
00:56:51the 21st Beckons for him potentially with Charles Rainford set for his best ever finish in a touring car
00:56:57Tom Ingram looking at third Adam Morgan fourth and this quartet as I said earlier on were three seconds up the road the
00:57:03gaps come down a bit 2.8 seconds over Dan Kamish but it's still a monster gap back on board with Moffett he's right on the tail of the
00:57:08of the unlimited motorsport cupra of another returnee that's Dexter Patterson yeah obviously
00:57:15uh Aidan Moffett really ruining his mistake in qualifying when he clipped the curb at paddock and
00:57:21put himself in the gravel causing a red flag causing him to be taken out qualifying started at the back
00:57:26he knew he had a quick car the other two BMWs or two of the others on the front row so he's making amends
00:57:32in this race always races better than he qualifies does Aidan today he needs to but Dexter Patterson
00:57:38uh in a quick car that cupra going nicely unlimited motorsport is a team that kind of goes under the
00:57:43radar and doesn't get the credit it deserves but in a short space of time it's become a really good
00:57:47strong good beating cc team good drivers this year and the cupras developed of course so uh
00:57:54cars they know how to operate Dexter Patterson going nicely that's all team mate a bit further back 23rd and
00:57:59Nick Hamilton I'm afraid uh must have done some damage because he tripped through the ground and put
00:58:03him in the pits and there he has stayed look at this for third Ingram has dropped back off the
00:58:06BMWs and Adam Morgan has dropped off the back of Ingram a little yeah I think uh I think they realize
00:58:12they're not going to beat the BMWs and uh uh and and just playing a little canny game perhaps of who
00:58:18finishes fourth and I think Morgan dropping back is a good sign that he wants to do that but I I have
00:58:24to give credit to Goodyear because these soft tyres have held up extremely well um as we're about to start
00:58:31the last lap there's been no comment on these hot conditions the tyre has not only been durable it's
00:58:37been fast faster than the hard tyre throughout this race and uh hats off to Goodyear Mickey Butler for
00:58:44the recommendations on maximum campers minimum starting pressures that they've given all the teams
00:58:49to make sure they survive this race so for the final time up towards Druids goes Jake Hill Charles
00:58:55Rainford doesn't give the impression of somebody that's going to have a last uh lap dive here against his
00:59:00teammate he's going to back the points in his best finish and Jake Hill uh as the team leader
00:59:04the reigning champion looks like win 21 is around the next corner but one effectively and for third
00:59:10well it is still Tom Ingram so fourth Adam Morgan remember the point about why you want to be fourth
00:59:15is you'll be on the better faster tyre for race two the top three drivers in any uh race one any venue have
00:59:21to carry the hardest available tyre into the next race so Jake Hill accelerates up towards the line
00:59:27Jake Hill wins at Browns hatch the reigning champion claims glory in race one of the day Charles
00:59:32Rainford second Tom Ingram third and a happy Adam Morgan is fourth look at the gap they pulled over
00:59:37Dan Kamish heading to the line in fifth there you've got the battle between Chris Smiley and Michael
00:59:41Grease that's going on at the moment for 12th place uh across the line for sixth was Mikey Doble
00:59:45seventh on correcting time Darrell de Leon eight Sam Oldsport down to ninth Dan Lloyd Ash Sutton 10th
00:59:52Ronan Pearson 11th Chris Smiley 12th from Grease Jelly and Cook to round out the point scorers
00:59:58and Aidan Moffat after his disappointing qualifying he's going to come through still behind Dexter
01:00:03Patterson uh so out of the points you've got Taylor Smith ahead of Dorlin Robot of 18th Patterson 19th
01:00:09Moffat 20th and Winshedden 21st Tom Chilton had a disappointing race as well that car just didn't
01:00:15seem to have the fight in it that the uh really quick Hyundai's on the soft tyre did of uh Ingram and
01:00:21Morgan or indeed the restart cars uh behind Chilton there was Max Hall and Nick Halstead bringing up
01:00:26the rear Nick Hamilton was the one retirement from the race but Jake Hill made it look easy I'm sure he'll
01:00:33tell Louise that it wasn't in the temperatures and having to manage tyres and manage boost but that's a
01:00:37brilliant start not only to the day but now to kick start the title assault yes he's back isn't he and
01:00:44shows us that on hot days and on tracks that suit them they are absolutely going to be a threat
01:00:50and it's also congratulations to West Surrey Racing who take their 133rd team win makes them the highest
01:00:58all-time uh team winners uh so congratulations West Surrey Racing and uh congratulations to Charles
01:01:04Rainford on his first podium a superlative drive absolutely yes and and you're right 133rd victory
01:01:10for the team but also a one-two finish you know if you're gonna have a weird one and a one-two as
01:01:14well just to wrap everyone's uh nose into it the cars go through the technical check let's look at the
01:01:19results of round four Jake Hill wins at Brands Hatch Charles Rainford uh BMW stable mate second and
01:01:25Tom Ingram in third fourth Adam Morgan ahead of Dan Kamish sixth and the winning independent driver
01:01:30that's Mikey Doble with Daryl De Leon Sam Osborne Dan Lloyd and Ash Sutton rounding out the top 10
01:01:36Sutton the best of those on the harder tire 11th Ronan Pearson the point scorers completed by Chris
01:01:41Smiley Michael Kreese Stephen Jelly and Josh Cook Aaron Taylor-Smith 16th ahead of James Dorlin and Dan
01:01:46Rowbottom the top 20 rounded out by Dexter Patterson and Aidan Moffat in 21st was Gordon Shedden Tom Chilton
01:01:5322nd Max Hall was next ahead of Nick Halstead and we lost Nick Hamilton uh with the uh problems
01:02:00after he had that trip through the gravel and hopefully his unlimited motorsports Cupra is
01:02:05going to be good for race two so what does this do to the championship it puts Tom Ingram at the top
01:02:10now but only by two points from Ash Sutton Jake Hill's up to third and looking menacing ahead of Dan
01:02:15Kamish and Tom Chilton Dan Rowbottom is sixth with Adam Morgan next then Mikey Doble Chris
01:02:20Smiley and Aidan Moffat round out the top 10 so of course still two more races to come uh race two is
01:02:28going to be really interesting with the uh drivers switching on to the hard tire for the top three
01:02:33and also the uh different boost allocations going into the second race of the day but Jake Hill a great
01:02:38job done the winning margin in the end just six tenths of a second the key thing for Jake is that it's not
01:02:45just the win points it's the pole position point and the eighth bonus point for leading a lap as
01:02:51well so he's a very very happy man indeed uh not only is he back he's back with a big bag full of
01:02:56points the only spoiler was that Charles Rainford took away the fastest lap point but goes to see
01:03:01his dad goes to see Craig Pauley his engineer uh and uh it's a win for Jake yeah but it's a win for
01:03:07the team a huge amount of effort has been put in over the last couple of weeks since Donington well
01:03:13they didn't do perhaps as much winter testing to some other teams uh and maybe they were caught on
01:03:18the back foot a little bit at Donington but boy have they had a massive turnaround in fortunes over
01:03:22the last couple of weeks lots of applause in the background you can see uh for Jake Hill as
01:03:27race winner good year winner's cap goes on but Charles Rainford celebrating as though he'd won the race
01:03:31because as Tim has made the point the superlative drive uh Charles who we've seen in Carrera Cup GB in
01:03:36the last few years also a prolific historic racer he takes second place at great drive but it is fair
01:03:42to say Louise that Jake Hill is back Jake Hill is absolutely back um and really quite pleased with
01:03:48that win and justifiably so it's just a really nice race that one you know I mean Charles was uh
01:03:54Charles was perfect you know he was obviously had a bit of pressure from Tom I think in the middle but
01:03:57uh he held his own so yeah great one too for for obviously for BMW and huge thank you to laser tools
01:04:03racing maybe motorsport a special little bit of history because I don't know whether you're aware
01:04:07that that is win number 133 for West Surrey Racing which makes them the most successful team in the
01:04:12history of the British Touring Car Championship that's something special but it is a is a mark of
01:04:16the team isn't it it is and I'm super proud I can get that for the team you know I mean uh getting
01:04:20the championship last year was something special but uh keep busting those uh milestones like we are super
01:04:25special how was that race I mean it seemed were you quite confident that Charles was going to
01:04:31stay behind you or do you think he was going to have a have a go at you or I mean we had an initial
01:04:35plan and but you just you never know he's a new teammate you don't know if he's going to stick to
01:04:38it or not uh but giving me credit he you know drove perfectly we had a perfect formation in those
01:04:43first few laps to just get a little bit of a gap uh he pushed me quite hard at the end he had a little
01:04:48bit more extra deploy but um yeah plain sailing for both of us and a nice way to finish well done
01:04:52congratulations and and especially I mean Charles congratulations what a special moment your first
01:04:57ever BTCC podium in only round two totally I mean Jake said it was plain saying didn't feel like that
01:05:02with me with Tinga and directly behind me but um yeah no just amazing from all the boys and girls at
01:05:06WSR you know we're just absolutely phenomenal for all we are at Dyington Park now and we've got a racing
01:05:11car so uh we've set ourselves well for the rest of the day just yeah looking forward to it now you've got
01:05:15a racing car that's capable of setting a new lap record and uh which you did in that race as well so
01:05:20amazing well I can have that to the to the kudos thank you very much spot on um yeah okay I'll take
01:05:26that one thank you and what does it feel like I I've just been talking with Jake about the fact that
01:05:30this is this makes um West Surrey racing that the most successful team in the in the history of the
01:05:35championship so the podium is special anyway but to stand alongside uh him at this moment is something
01:05:41else as well isn't it yeah totally obviously not being with the team long you know I got to know all
01:05:44the boys and girls WSR throughout throughout kind of January February time so we've all come
01:05:49become together like one big family now so yeah to be second with Jake winning then the most
01:05:53successful team that's just yeah fantastic Jake said you stuck to the plan how tempted were you to
01:05:58not stick to the plan put my headlights on the last lap and just thought but obviously you know he's a
01:06:03champion I'm never going to put him off like that but um no I'm learning from the best and I'm just
01:06:07going to keep improving fair enough well done um and you would have overtaken given any opportunity
01:06:11wouldn't you but um as you did at the at the start p3 great result what's he sticking to the plan
01:06:17I was hoping for dive bombs and all sorts um after after what happened with us all at Donington I
01:06:23think we're all sort of um quite steady I think is probably the easiest word to make sure we all
01:06:30finish that race because there's always been a little bit of chatter and again with it being as hot as it
01:06:34is you know we've had to be um aware I think more than anything else aware of the um of how the tire can
01:06:40have a bit too much temperature through it so I was very happy just to sort of settle it settle in for
01:06:46third um charged remarkably well really really well as did Jake um just didn't really give me an
01:06:53opportunity to to stick a nose in there was obviously the the TTB hybrid um deficit thing
01:07:00that we had to be slightly aware of as well but um nope very happy good to get points on the board so
01:07:05far um hard tire for the next race well I was going to ask you about that how much of an issue is that
01:07:11going to be I mean obviously two guys ahead of you it's the same thing but there's going to be a lot
01:07:15of people on the soft tire yeah I mean Ash was was sort of matching matching lap time throughout
01:07:19you know probably three or four tenths behind us over the race distance so you know Ash has sort
01:07:23of given us a bit of a delta to to see what's going on over that over that first race and the pace
01:07:27from Ash looked really strong so um that's encouraging there's obviously a slight different
01:07:31mentality you can have for the hard tire than you can with the soft the soft you have to sort of nurse
01:07:35it and get it to the end whereas the hard we can we can probably attack a little earlier so um
01:07:39yeah but it sounds about Ash has done a good job on it so it gives us a little bit of info going
01:07:42forwards now well done we will see you out there for the next one but before I throw to the break
01:07:46I can see the man here who runs the most successful team in uh in British touring car history so so
01:07:51dick congratulations um you have had so many moments in this championship but uh how does how does this
01:07:59one feel well actually I've just only found out last night apparently we've now won 133 races so
01:08:05shows my age now but no fantastic effort from everyone at wsr neil browns it's been a great
01:08:13effort a lot of work's gone on since donnington and um yeah we're and just talking to jake then
01:08:19the car was very good through the race so we're a bit nervous on race pace we knew what we did for
01:08:24qualifying but jake just said the car was great i love the fact that rather than stopping and sinking
01:08:31in and you know this this special moment making the most of it you're already you're on to the
01:08:35next race aren't you and let's like let's get another win under our belt i'm on to snitterton now
01:08:41yeah no no it's um a fantastic achievement the 133 wins but now it's about today what can we do all
01:08:48four cars finished so you know um daryl did a great job finishing p8 but yeah charles especially you
01:08:56know there's only second ever touring car meeting and um no he's a great lad so yeah so looking
01:09:02forward to the next one so are we so are we um that's going to be coming up later on today but
01:09:08right now though we're heading for a quick break
01:09:20british touring car championship round four great start by hill and rainford in the bmw's tom
01:09:25ingram grabbed third and ash sutton went from 13th to 10th on the hard tires on that opening lap
01:09:31rainford in second kept ingram at bay with a couple of lap records but jake hill was always in control
01:09:36leading home rainford ingram and morgan for west surrey racing's 133rd race win a new british touring car
01:09:45championship record so well done jake hill and and paul o'neill how would you sum up
01:09:52what characterizes west surrey racing and the scale of that achievement yeah i mean it's a huge
01:09:57achievement i've raced against west surrey for a long time when i was driving they were always amazing
01:10:03on chassis work um and ever since they've had the bmws they've been absolutely astounding but that takes
01:10:09some going that does to to rack up that amount of wins but dick bennett really summed it up for me
01:10:14he's thinking about the next race he's thinking about the next weekend we were laughing in the studio
01:10:18these guys are absolutely brilliant because all they want to do is win and in this championship
01:10:24if you have that mentality you're going to go far and they've got a great set of personnel there yeah
01:10:28jake hill back on winning form as we see on the podium behind us charles rainford up there as well
01:10:33what a drive what a weekend for him yeah so far so good um you know i really love charles rainford i
01:10:39i met him for the first time at donington i think he's the epitome of a an amazing driver that just
01:10:46is a fan of the championship and he just can't wait to do well and i'm so glad he's got this uh
01:10:51this podium but i was hoping he'd push jake for the win and i think he did try hard and i've got to
01:10:56say the drivers were pushing hard and the lap times were fast on the soft tire and like tim said in
01:11:00commentary the tires were exceptional good year mickey butler they've done a great job but rainford
01:11:06love him to bits he's like uh he's like a posher tom chilton can't be a posher tom chill there is
01:11:13no such thing uh but also behind them great form once again from tom ingram and also his teammate
01:11:19uh adam morgan grabbing fourth there as well and uh he's uh had a quick chat with louise as well
01:11:24p4 that's a good start you said you wanted solid results that's a solid result isn't it just solid
01:11:29points for the day is all we're after but uh no about the most nervous bit for me was getting off the
01:11:34line you know making the switch to front wheel drive and i've messed it up bad yesterday so we
01:11:39got off the line okay and then for me it was just just follow ingram home uh i used my boost when i
01:11:44could and by the time i caught him up i only had two laps more than he did so i said let's just stay
01:11:50where we are bring it home in the points and um you know starting finishing in p4 means i can also start
01:11:56on the softer race too never crossed my mind once during the race so uh yeah i think we're in a good
01:12:01place for race two now how much of an advantage do you think that's going to be against the three
01:12:05drivers up ahead of you and do you think everybody around you is going to be in the softs they are
01:12:08aren't they and i thought so i mean i've not had a chance to go through the times yet but looking
01:12:12at it there's quite a big delta between the hard and the soft i'm going to have less less boost
01:12:17available but the tire advantage i think should be enough to hopefully get me through to where i
01:12:22want to be it's a nice little smile on your face we'll see we'll see see you out there
01:12:26and of course the top three from race one hill uh rainford and ingram will all be on hard tires
01:12:33for the second race um what kind of disadvantage what kind of challenge is that i think ash sutton
01:12:39has shown exactly what can be achieved on the hard tires yeah exactly you know we expect dash to
01:12:44to be the best of the hard tire runners and we've seen that but i've got to say i think adam morgan
01:12:48with that cheeky little smile he knows you know when he goes on about the delta like we've spoken about
01:12:53before it's the the time gap between the two tires and it's quite a lot around here and adam has
01:12:59probably felt that the tire is amazing he'll have it fresh in his memory he'll go on to it straight
01:13:04away he knows that the three in front will be easier targets so yeah that tire is going to be
01:13:09fantastic and adam should have a strong strong result but uh be good to see um ash sutton come
01:13:15through as well i think on on that time yeah concerns about the soft tire sort of gone away a bit
01:13:19got to be careful yeah i've got to say i am super impressed with how hard they've pushed
01:13:26you could tell in the lap times how fast and how hard they've driven on the tire it's the last part
01:13:30of the lap that's the the worry and you know concern for them that left front getting battered as they
01:13:34turn in but um it's been fine so were the drivers just backing off and managing the tires only a little
01:13:40bit i think they've done really well with it yeah okay it's warm out there and it's getting warmer uh second
01:13:44tiering
