There have already been multiple tropical storms in the eastern Pacific so far this summer, but none in the Atlantic. AccuWeather's Bernie Rayno explains why.
00:00The Atlantic Basin remains quiet. All of the tropical, if we could say, activity is in the eastern Pacific.
00:08Let's take you into the Atlantic. I mean, just take a look at it.
00:11First of all, you have all this dry air denoted by the yellow shading here across the Turks and Kikos all the way into the tropical Atlantic.
00:20Now, you do have this little area where you don't have a whole lot of moisture, but that's an area where you have a ton of wind shear, winds coming in out of the west-southwest.
00:29Let me show you the product we have for that. From the Gulf of America all the way toward the African coast, you see that dark purple?
00:36That's all wind shear. Nothing is going to survive. All these tropical waves coming off Africa, nothing survives in there.
00:43Now, this is not unheard of. You typically see that, especially in the tropical Atlantic.
00:48But one area you always watch for is close into the United States, southwest Atlantic, Gulf of America, and the Caribbean.
00:55We do have clusters of thunderstorms here in the southwest Caribbean, but notice anything that tries to go north, and I mean anything that tries to go north, runs into that wind shear from Jamaica toward Cancun into the Bay of Campeche.
01:09That's why we think it's going to be relatively quiet, at least for this week.
01:13Now, one thing to keep an eye on as we get toward next week.
01:18You're going to see this big area of high pressure build across the southern tier of the United States.
01:22You always look under the belly of the high for tropical development.
01:27So we're going to monitor this area.
01:29However, I'm not very optimistic, thankfully, that we're going to have anything developing here,
01:35because the wind shear remains quite strong.
01:38Now, in the Pacific, let's keep an eye on this area, an area of showers and thunderstorms.
01:43This is our tropical rainstorm likely to become Eric.
01:47It'll be a tropical storm, and it will impact southwest coast of Mexico later this week.
