00:00Change, can Jett Lawrence keep it going on the 18?
00:05Lessinger's fired up, you can see there on the 7 toward the inside.
00:09Can Eli Tomac get a better jump than Moto 1?
00:12It's time for Moto 2, let's go!
00:20Hunter Lawrence, Justin Cooper up front, Joey Savace, finally a good start to the 17, and there's Tomac!
00:27Going to the front, he's got the lead!
00:31Eli Tomac out front, you can hear this crowd going wild, Jett Lawrence didn't get the best to start,
00:36we saw somebody go down, and right now, these guys haven't had a chance to prepare for the rain,
00:41so they really was on the gate thinking that it might be a sun race,
00:44and so for him, Eli Tomac did the best job out front, let's see what he can do,
00:49because if it's time, it is right now.
00:52The moment Tomac jumped into the lead is the moment the skies opened up,
00:56and speaking of opening up, look at the lead he's built!
01:01Check out the start here, his teammate Cooper Webb, right side.
01:06Yeah, you can see Cooper Webb, left side.
01:08In the front, like he just loses his front, easy to happen, then he gets ran over,
01:12you don't give him a Father's Day gift for him like that.
01:15A couple other guys going down, but when you fall in the front of the pack, that's easy to happen.
01:20That was Freddie Noren there, the international racing, Kawasaki also down there, rough start to the year for Freddie.
01:29Great start to the moto, though, for ET3.
01:32Yeah, now if I'm Eli, with all this rain, like I'm going to try to build me a big old gap,
01:37just try to hammer it down before this track gets really slippery,
01:40because the hard part is you can see Jett Lawrence way back in the pack,
01:44and the way his stars have been, that's way back in the pack.
01:47I think he's outside the top ten.
01:49By me, like Tomac, I'm going to try to get a gap, because at some point, you know,
01:52Jett's going to be more concerned about finishing this race,
01:55and if I can get it, as RJ does, a little donut right there.
01:57Wow!
01:57Jason, you're talking about a track that's going to be difficult to race,
02:03all these shiny spots and getting slippery.
02:06Oh, man, Vision.
02:07Again, these guys went to the gate thinking it's a dry race,
02:10so they have not prepared to, you know, prepare for this,
02:14and I don't know what they're complaining about, because it's very dry in the booth right here.
02:20James, just talking about the goggle situation, we talk about roll-offs, tear-offs for the mud,
02:24but the rain, there's really nothing you can do about that.
02:28No, it's nothing you can do, and tear-offs are almost the worst situation.
02:32If you get any water behind one of them, you almost have to yank them all off,
02:35because the way they're set up, and so, like I said, these guys didn't go to the gate thinking that
02:40it was going to be a mud race, and if anything, like it continues,
02:44it really gives Eli Tomac and these other guys an advantage to get a start.
02:48Yeah, there's a couple things they can do.
02:49I'm thinking about sometimes they'll have the extended visor on the front of the helmet
02:52if they know it's going to rain, but I don't think anyone has it,
02:55because it wasn't raining until about 15 seconds after the gate dropped,
02:59and you see Plessinger ripping a tear off there.
03:02It's Tomac, Hunter Lawrence, Cooper, and here's Plessinger in fourth.
03:06Yeah, and the hard part is, it's like if it's raining at this point as a rider,
03:10you just want it to keep flooding, you know, because you want it to slow this racetrack down.
03:14What would be bad if it rains like this for another few minutes, and then it stops?
03:17Because you'll still have the pace, but this track is going to be ice, cold, ice, slippery out here.
03:23You can see all those shiny parts.
03:25The fact that these guys are still jumping these jumps just shows how good it is.
03:29The only benefit is that they all use the paddle tires, so they get to use it,
03:33and it works out at this point.
03:34Well, does it, or are there some spots where it's actually bad, those hard, shiny spots?
03:40The paddle deep mud is great.
03:41What about that?
03:42Yeah, well, I just think because it's hard, shiny, it doesn't necessarily work on a hard spot,
03:47but if you have the normal, traditional tire, that thing is going to fill up with mud,
03:51so the paddle tire spits that part out, Katie.
03:54Yeah, and you guys might remember earlier when AP was beaming with the fact that he was,
03:58with that Moto 1 and all the fans, he was like, man, I just wish it had been a rain race,
04:02and, of course, he's getting his wish right now.
04:05This is one of those areas that he excels in, and, in fact, this track in particular,
04:09the team was seeing a little bit of panic initially when he came to it,
04:12and this, as he goes off just a little bit there,
04:14but you can tell that he gets much more excited when it's one of these rain, down, and dirty type of tracks.
04:20Well, Katie, a lot of the fans here grew up watching him race.
04:23It's from Ohio not too far away, and his dad, Scott, the AMA Hall of Famer,
04:28great mud rider in his own right.
04:29I'll tell you that, Ohio clay, nothing, nothing is worse to ride in mud than that.
04:35It gets so slippery.
04:36So these conditions right up the alley for the Plessingers,
04:40and he's putting the heat on Justin Cooper right now.
04:43Yeah, the rain's starting to slow, so it's allowed this track, this throws.
04:46It's going to be super slippery, but it's still racy,
04:49and at this point, if you don't have the roll-offs off, you want to be in front of the guys.
04:52You don't want to be behind Justin Cooper that close,
04:54but, you know, same thing we talked about with Jet Lawrence in the first moto,
04:58because the way he rides, I think this track's not going to change too much for him.
05:02It's going to be very technical.
05:03We've got to be super patient, and you can see Aaron Plessinger riffing a tear-off now down,
05:08and it's stopping raining on this side of the racetrack,
05:11so a lot of different things happening at the moment.
05:14Now, by the way, as we watch Plessinger and Cooper fight for third,
05:19Jet Lawrence not making much progress at eighth at the moment.
05:23Oh, there's Plessinger up the inside.
05:25Yeah, nice line, short time, but, yeah, Justin was able to carry that momentum around the outside,
05:30just basically continue rolling down Aaron.
05:34See how slippery this thing is.
05:35Still a little bit of dust showing, so this water's just sitting on top of this racetrack,
05:39making it super slippery.
05:40And because Jet is not advancing toward the front right now,
05:46Hunter Lawrence is in position to win the overall,
05:49and believe it or not, that would actually be his first 450 Pro Moto Cross win.
05:54It was close so many times battling with Chase Sexton last year, never got one.
05:59Plessinger has been close so many times to passing.
06:02Justin Cooper hasn't been able to do it and finally does.
06:05Yeah, but don't sleep on this number seven KTM here at Plessinger,
06:09because, you know, right there it just shows you that bike kicking around loose,
06:13but Aaron throws those long legs out.
06:15That's probably why he's so comfortable in this position,
06:18because you've got to be comfortable being uncomfortable,
06:19and, you know, Aaron Plessinger knows how to make anything work,
06:23and when these tracks get conditions like this, he loves it.
06:27When in doubt, throw them big old anchors out, both of them,
06:30sit on the seat, put some weight on that thing.
06:32And that is what we saw at Foxborough Supercross earlier this year,
06:38the art of racing in the rain.
06:39He just threw those legs out and powered his way to the win.
06:42There is Hunter Lawrence in second.
06:44You see the overall score right now on the lower left.
06:47It would be Hunter over Tomac over Plessinger.
06:51Can Plessinger run Hunter Lawrence down?
06:54And Jett's still back there in seventh now.
06:59He's got around Cody Shock and Benoit Patrelle.
07:04And as I said in the beginning, this actually happened.
07:07Literally half the track is raining, and now half it is not.
07:12Yeah, and we saw what Jett was in this position earlier this year at Hangtown.
07:16We were wondering, like, all right, how much is he going to push
07:19and try to catch these guys?
07:20Well, I think Jett, you know, age and maybe the injuries,
07:23he's just going to continue doing his thing.
07:25I think he'll just continue marching his way up.
07:27Let's not turn a, you know, a seventh place into a 13th or a 20th place.
07:33And the only way that can happen is you just try to overroute this racetrack.
07:36If you methodically pick your way up through this racetrack,
07:39just like you did in that first moto, you have the pace on these guys.
07:42You can at least get back up to possibly that top five,
07:44maybe even a podium as this race is going.
07:46But if you throw it down, it's going to be losing more than just this race.
07:51Yeah, we're talking about all the wins he has,
07:54but the main goal, of course, is the championship.
07:57So how will he play it?
07:58And it is wild to see them literally riding in and out of the rain,
08:03depending on what part of the track they're on.
08:06There's Tomac.
08:08Nearly a five-second gap now.
08:11Oh, this track is going to get so slippery.
08:15And, again, it wasn't rendering in the shot that we were showing Jet Lawrence,
08:18but over here it is.
08:22Oh, Elok came prepared with the real loss.
08:24Wow.
08:28All right, smart move there.
08:29So the 32-year-old out of Colorado should be the second moto win of the year,
08:35if he can hold it, as you're watching him on the Parts Unlimited leader cam.
08:40But can he get the overall?
08:42It's all hanging in the balance, at least as of now,
08:44between Tomac, Hunter Lawrence, and Plessinger.
08:47But then, of course, if Jet moves up, that can change the map as well.
08:53Yeah, these guys are so close.
08:55And right now this gap that Eli has, about five seconds, over 104 and a half seconds,
09:00he's going to just try to manage that gap.
09:03But his AP is going to have to try to do the damage to move up.
09:06Otherwise, as you said, Hunter Lawrence is still going to be able to walk away
09:08with this overall victory.
09:10And I don't know how many positions Jet would be able to make up to close that gap
09:13because Hunter finished second.
09:14So at this point, you know, these guys just got to continue racing.
09:19It's still a long ways to go, 20 minutes left.
09:23And just like Plessinger and Moto1, crowd-loving Tomac leading this.
09:28Set it back down.
09:30Well, after that last moto, I went over to the team and said,
09:33hey, what happened?
09:34How's the vibes over here?
09:35And the team kind of scratched their head and said,
09:37it was a little puzzling, that moto.
09:38So Eli Tomac coming in fifth.
09:41Remember, guys, at the top of the show, he told us the number one goal
09:45is for him to stay off the ground as we can stay on two wheels.
09:48Obviously, this is a track that is difficult, as Stu, you were leaning into,
09:52difficult to do so.
09:53But that's his main goal, to make sure he does get the job done.
09:57Yeah.
09:58And I'm sure what they were a little puzzled at was that how quickly he was able to
10:01close on Justin Cooper, running at 204, which was the fastest lifetime of anybody.
10:06And then to get stuck there, almost brings you back to the Eli Tomac back in on the
10:11Kawasaki days before he became the champion that he is.
10:15So you just wonder yourself, as we're watching Hunter Lawrence, starting to close the gap a
10:20little bit on Eli.
10:21You just start to wonder, like, where did that come from?
10:24Because this guy usually should be able to, if he's got that pace, you should be able to
10:28get around him.
10:28And people around you shouldn't affect you that much.
10:30And obviously, it did.
10:32I think it's just more frustrating from Eli.
10:35As for Hunter here, who, like you said, is starting to close on Tomac, they've been making
10:39a lot of progress with the motorcycle.
10:41We checked in with him about that yesterday.
10:44Yeah, it was a lot closer last weekend.
10:46And a big thing in the first ones, we were working a lot on the motorcycle.
10:50Just familiarity.
10:51I wasn't willing to push it past a certain point and just not sure what the motorcycle
10:57was doing.
10:58And we've made a lot of progress on that.
11:01So just honestly, this week was just getting laps under my belt.
11:04You know, last weekend we tested leading up to Thunder Valley.
11:08Thunder Valley was the first full day of riding on that suspension setting, which was awesome.
11:12This week we got two more days on it.
11:14So, yeah, looking forward to going out and riding my bike.
11:16The team did an amazing job and we got the bike in a lot better position.
11:19And extremely thankful to have a group of great people behind us.
11:24And what was interesting, Hunter's comments after the race last week as he rides back into
11:28this rain, there's Jet catching Sabachi now for sixth.
11:34So Hunter said, yeah, Jet's just a freak.
11:36He can get on a bike for the first time and just win a race on it immediately.
11:40I need some laps, some days to just get used to it.
11:43They haven't touched the bike since last Saturday.
11:45And obviously Hunter has adapted well now.
11:47Jet looking to make a pass.
11:49Yeah, you know, and I think that just comes with age.
11:52You know, Jet's a little bit younger.
11:53It's like, you know, when you tell your kids, like, don't touch that stove and they're going
11:56to touch it anyway.
11:57Like, look, I've burned myself.
11:58I know how hot it is.
11:59Well, I think Jet's just younger and he's like, you know what, I'm going to still go win.
12:03But Hunter, you know, just the injury and it is flooding out here right now.
12:07You know, he just takes a little bit of time to, you know, just prepare and, I guess, you
12:13know, make sure everything is right.
12:15And when it is right, he can come out here and possibly have his first overall victory
12:19of the year.
12:20But it has to be right and he has to be comfortable as Jet Lawrence makes his way up.
12:24Now puts him on the podium.
12:25Tie with Eli for second place.
12:28But Eli's obviously ahead of him, so he'll give him a nod.
12:31So that's two points that Jet has just made up.
12:33He passed to Bachi on the quad lock Honda.
12:35And then the monster Kawasaki of Anderson.
12:38He's looking up the track.
12:40Justin Cooper is four seconds up ahead.
12:42At the moment, Hunter Lawrence would have the overall first ever for him on a 450 if he
12:48can get it done.
12:50Yeah, Jet's going to continue moving up.
12:52And as I mentioned, you know, just let this race come, especially with all this rain.
12:56There's going to be mistakes made from the guys in front of you pretty easily.
12:59And I feel like even with Hunter Lawrence, he can probably close in on Eli quite a bit
13:05when it's a mud race.
13:06It's really easy to make time up, you know, and the hard part is making that pass.
13:10So he just continues doing his thing as we're watching the lead come down up front to 28.8
13:16seconds.
13:18Jet Lawrence is starting to close on Justin Cooper as well.
13:21See if he can make his way around.
13:23And that would change a lot of things.
13:26Yeah, it'll be a 1-5 for Jet Lawrence right now.
13:34Which, as we mentioned, will be tied for second overall with Tomac.
13:37But Tomac has the second moto tiebreaker, but we're not even at the halfway mark, so anything
13:42can happen.
13:44Also, with Hunter starting to close on Tomac, that could change things as well.
13:51Because if, for example, Jet were to get all the way to the third and Hunter were to finish
13:57second, the 1-3 would beat the 2-2.
13:59So Jet still has a shot at it, even if he doesn't pass Hunter, but he needs to get Cooper
14:06and Plessinger.
14:07That's not going to be easy.
14:09Yeah, but he's got a really good pace, and I think the way he's riding, consistency is
14:13going to end up winning out.
14:14If he can just turn these solid laps in, as I mentioned, mistakes can be made, and he's
14:19within nine seconds of Aaron Plessinger.
14:22So if he can get around Justin Cooper and not stall out, you know, then he can continue
14:26doing that.
14:26Maybe he can have a chance to get to that third place, because then that would really
14:29change it.
14:29So overall, victory is still on the deck for Jet Lawrence if he can keep moving forward.
14:35Now, one other thing to note, the rulebook says that if a race had to be called due to
14:41weather, if it's called past the 20-minute mark, the results stand as if it was a full moto.
14:46We're about five minutes away from that, so we'll see if it gets there.
14:52Then if the race had to be cut short, that would be extreme weather, lightning, things
14:55like that.
14:56That's not the case, at least at the moment.
14:58You know, I said in the first moto, Jet's one of the best I've ever seen, like, you know,
15:03one adapting to the track, but, you know, his line selection is better.
15:06So he was going really far inside on a lot of corners.
15:09Now he's going outside on a lot of the corners, and the reason he's doing that is because now,
15:13you know, we talked about the paddle tire not working on this hard stuff.
15:17Best place to be at is in this bluff, so you notice he basically totally switched his
15:21lines up.
15:21Yeah, he was totally inside last lap.
15:23Inside, and even the corners before that, he's going outside.
15:27That's what he's so good at doing.
15:28It's just an adapting to his situation because these lines are not a difference than he was
15:33early in the race, but earlier today, kids got it going for him.
15:38Halfway through the final race of the day, a reminder that Monster Energy is available at
15:44BFS Foods.
15:47Okay, so Lawrence has caught Cooper, but can he pass him in the mud?
15:52Yeah, and he's going to have to get around him pretty quick because you can notice he's
15:54starting to pull a lot of tear-offs out there, and eventually he's going to run out.
15:58And then with all this mud, we saw what happened when you pull your tear-offs off.
16:02We chased X in the goggles.
16:03You know, this ain't the track.
16:05Any of these racetracks, you don't want to have to deal with that.
16:07So Jet's going to have to be mindful of this.
16:09As I think he tried to pull a tear-off and he doesn't have any more.
16:13Might be a problem at this point.
16:14Uh, yeah, did he just try again?
16:17Yeah.
16:18No dice?
16:21They usually do.
16:22I think he just pointed to his mechanics to let him know he doesn't have any tear-offs at
16:26this point.
16:28And now the rain's stopping.
16:29That's only going to make the mud stickier, right?
16:31Yeah, that's only going to make it worse for him because now when he gets hit with it,
16:33it's going to be that sticky mud.
16:35It's going to be tough.
16:35JT?
16:36Yeah, just wondering what the plan's going to be here.
16:39You saw him run out of tear-offs and then he's just wiping the goggles, which it can
16:43work, but it's not really a strategy, right?
16:45So we've seen this.
16:46We saw Chase Sexton lose his goggles the very first race of the year and how that went.
16:51So Jet now has a decision to make for the rest of this race.
16:54Yeah, I mean, once you, you can only get away with that one or two times and especially when
16:58it stops raining, you'll have one wipe and that mud's going to smear across and then
17:01it's going to harden up because of the wind and all that and then it's not going to come
17:05off.
17:06So eventually he's going to have to make a decision and the decision he's got to make might
17:10cost him overall because at this pace, if he rides like this, I think he'll eventually
17:15catch up to Aaron Plessinger.
17:16But if he pulls in, I think he'll lose so much time with as much time to go.
17:20So very interesting decision he's going to have to make if he ends up pulling his goggles
17:25off.
17:25And you can already start to see him backing off of Justin Cooper.
17:28Maybe vision problems or maybe trying to save the vision by not being so close to him
17:33and pass him when you have an opportunity, when you know it's an opportunity to pass.
17:36Widers will run 21, sometimes 28 tear-offs.
17:41They come in packs of seven.
17:45They say, I don't know if what they were doing when you were racing, when you put the 28 on
17:50there, it's pretty hard to see when the race begins, right?
17:53Yeah.
17:53Is that thick?
17:54No, it starts to get thick.
17:55I mean, you're putting laminate over his jet, ducking his head.
18:00If I'm Justin Cooper, I wouldn't be surprised to start racing.
18:03Let him know, give him a little bit of roost, he's got no goggles out there.
18:06And that's a tactic as well.
18:08Oh, it didn't work.
18:09Yeah.
18:10Jet, easy pass.
18:11Easy pass.
18:12He was caught out.
18:13But Justin Cooper, as he pulls another tear off, you've got to get back in front of him
18:17if you can.
18:19Well, that was the best case scenario for Lawrence around Cooper and way wide of him.
18:25So no roost.
18:26So now Jet Lord's up to fourth.
18:29Yeah, I doubt at this point, Aaron's right in front of him.
18:32So even all that we were watching, he was able to close that time and he saw him take
18:36a look over.
18:37I don't think he's going to be pulling in the pits at this moment.
18:40Katie?
18:41Yeah, first and foremost, Christian Ducharme, who's holding his pit board, his mechanic,
18:45was just over at their truck pulling out some extra goggles, kind of put them back.
18:50It's now back over at the pit board.
18:51So I think that they're trying to figure out what to do with Jet regarding the goggles
18:54as well.
18:55But they do have a second pair sitting out in the truck.
18:58Meanwhile, Justin Cooper's pit board was saying that focus is number seven right ahead of
19:05you.
19:05So he has his eyes set on Aaron Plessinger.
19:08Well, he did.
19:09By the time he came back over the hill, though, Jet was between them here the last three lap
19:13times.
19:14And yeah, about two seconds, three seconds, a lap quicker is Jet Lawrence than Aaron Plessinger
19:19last three times around.
19:21Yeah, well, I don't know if I'm looking.
19:23Maybe it's just our shot.
19:24But it looks like Aaron Plessinger, I don't know if he has no goggles on.
19:30So that's going to help Jet out.
19:32Yeah, Aaron threw his goggles off as well.
19:34So that's probably why he was closing in.
19:38So again, if I'm Jet Lawrence, the only way I'm pulling in is if I start losing time.
19:42And I think the Honda would make that decision.
19:44If somehow he can't get around Aaron because he doesn't have any goggles, then he'll pull them
19:47in.
19:47But right now, Aaron doesn't have anything.
19:50So just stay on this road.
19:53And it's going to put you in the overall position at this moment if you can get around to number
19:56seven.
19:56That's what it would take, a one-three.
20:02If he can make this pass.
20:07Got some room around the outside.
20:10Leg off for Plessinger.
20:11Can Jet get it done?
20:12Oh, and Roder crashes right in front of him.
20:16That bell's Plessinger out for the moment.
20:18But then he hit that pothole.
20:20There it is, James.
20:21Yeah, there it was.
20:22I mean, you would think that Roder, I mean, I think that's all set up.
20:25Aaron not having any goggles probably had his eyes closed and he hit that pothole.
20:29But that changes the overall position.
20:31And if I'm Jet Lawrence, definitely not pulling in at this moment.
20:33No.
20:35Katie.
20:35Yeah, over here with KTM.
20:37And, of course, right now, the second pair of goggles for AP are in the hands of the team.
20:42They said that if he needed a change of goggles at the beginning of the race, prior to the
20:46race starting, they said, let me know a lap before.
20:49And Jay Burgess, his mechanic, was just over here nodding, saying, we think he might be
20:52coming in.
20:53And Katie, it looks like they're waving off the rest of the mechanics to get some room.
20:58This could be for safety as much as it is for result right now.
21:01But Jet Lawrence, that pass, it's going to give him the overall again.
21:05Yep, overall.
21:06And at KTM, I do believe Aaron will pull in because he's going backwards and there's no
21:10fight.
21:10You won't be able to fight.
21:11And if anybody should be, you know, worried about that, it is the KTM.
21:16They just had their, that's right, their champion and Chase X to go out with those
21:19goggles, so.
21:22Well done, Carlos, with the goggle swap.
21:26That's lightning quick.
21:27That was lightning quick.
21:28They did even a wipe.
21:30Wipe it there.
21:31So they're like, go, go, go.
21:32Put them on.
21:33Let me go.
21:33And that's Justin Cooper right in front of him right here with no goggles as well.
21:38So it's good playoff.
21:40Oh, couldn't make the quick pass, though.
21:45Yeah, but he's in a good spot.
21:47Now he has goggles.
21:48Justin doesn't have it.
21:49So, you know, Justin's playing with just a moment, a matter of time before Aaron gets
21:55done if he doesn't make any mistakes.
21:57So Tomek still leads the moto, but he's looking at a 5-1.
22:04And now we go back to that final lap of moto one.
22:09Cooper, Plessinger, Tomek were all battling.
22:11Had Eli gotten there, had he got the third, he'd be sitting in position to win the overall.
22:18Instead, it's going to be a 5-1 instead of a 3-1.
22:22Yeah.
22:23Tough, tough.
22:24But it just seems like no matter what, if Eli's able to hold on to this, it's like,
22:28yeah, you won a race, but you still didn't win it.
22:31He's going to look back at all these, like, man, I had him, especially being as fast as
22:36he was, being on Justin Cooper as early as he was.
22:39He should have been able to get around it.
22:40But nonetheless, that's why we go racing.
22:42These guys are good.
22:43And if you don't have it all together, you're going to get passed.
22:46Justin Cooper fighting hard, even without the goggles.
22:50Making it difficult on Plessinger here.
22:54Somebody's not happy.
22:56Some revving going on for sure.
23:00Oh, look at this pothole.
23:01Yeah.
23:03Good thing he had the goggles for that.
23:05That would have been a definitely pull it into pins.
23:08Yeah, I remember back in the day, I used to get so frustrated, like Aaron makes a mistake
23:11right there.
23:12I used to do this.
23:13I'm sorry, all the lap routers, they used to take them out because it was so bad.
23:16Oh, they're going to call it.
23:19Red flag.
23:21That would have to indicate worse weather is in the offer.
23:24And if it ends like this, it will be another Jett Lawrence win.
23:32Making the pass, what, two laps ago?
23:34Yeah.
23:35Yeah.
23:35That was everything.
23:38Tomac's going to win the Moto's second one this year.
23:40And somehow the overall works out in Jett Lawrence's favor again.
23:51And there's no podium.
