00:04The Victoria Memorial statue in front of Buckingham Palace was commissioned shortly after Queen
00:10Victoria's death in 1901 by King Edward VIII to honour her reign.
00:16Designed by sculptor Sir Thomas Brock and architect Sir Aston Webb, it was funded by
00:21public donations from across the British Empire, including significant contributions from both
00:28Australia and New Zealand.
00:31Made up of marble and featuring a gilded bronzed wind top, the 25-metre tall structure symbolises
00:40virtues of truth, justice and motherhood.
00:44The monument serves as a focal point for national ceremonies and remains a Grade 1 listed icon
00:51of civic architecture and monarchy.
