Another episode of look around London.
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:04The Thames Barrier is one of the world's largest moveable flood barriers located on
00:09the River Thames in South East London.
00:11It was completed in 1982 to protect the capital from tidal surges and flooding.
00:17The barrier spans 520 metres across the river and consists of 10 steel gates, each as high
00:25as a 5 storey building.
00:27When a high tide or storm surge is predicted, the gates rotate upwards from the riverbed
00:33to block the flow of water.
00:36It has been used over 200 times since opening and plays a crucial role in defending over
00:411.4 million people, key infrastructure and billions of pounds worth of property.
00:48With sea levels rising due to climate change, the barrier is expected to remain effective
00:52until at least 2070.
