00:00The House of Representatives passed on Monday a bill seeking to extend the term of Barangay
00:05and Sangguniang Kabataan officials from three to six years. If the approved bill becomes law,
00:11the Barangay elections will be moved from December 2025 to May 2029. Based on House Bill 11287,
00:18Barangay officials can be re-elected once, which means they could serve a total of 12
00:22uninterrupted years if they win in 2029. Only Barangay officials who started their first term
00:28after being elected in October 2023 can run for re-election. Supporters of the bill say that
00:34longer terms will help Barangay officials do their work better and complete projects that
00:38are hard to finish in just three years. But watchdog groups say delaying the elections goes against what
00:44the Supreme Court said about resetting elections, that elections can only be postponed if certain
00:49rules are followed. The Legal Network for Truthful Elections say postponing the 2025 Barangay polls
00:55quote, deprives the electorate of the basic right to choose people who will govern them.
