Je vais faire un peu de tactiques qui peuvent gagner ou gagner en l'event final.
00:03
C'est très très très très très duré, je ne peux pas faire ça.
00:06
Oh my days.
00:08
00:29
mais Slingsby's got the faster angle in to mark one.
00:33
Oh, what a start.
00:34
Fletcher's at absolute speed on the inside.
00:37
So this was decision time for Tom Slingsby.
00:39
He's leading the boats back into the start box.
00:42
One more manoeuvre to do
00:43
before he judges his run into the start line.
00:46
The advantage of being in the lead,
00:47
well, you get to dictate how the start's gonna play out
00:50
and that's classic Tom Slingsby.
00:51
He loves to be the one making the decision
00:54
and letting other people react.
00:55
He turned back too early
00:57
and you've got what's called time to kill.
00:59
So you know if you sailed at full speed,
01:01
you'd be early for the line.
01:02
Well, your only option there is to slow down
01:04
and if you slow down,
01:05
it gives those boats opportunity behind
01:08
to come and attack you.
01:10
Right now, Slingsby's the defender.
01:12
Giles Scott on board the Canadian boat, he's attacking.
01:15
And right at the moment where the two boats
01:17
are on a collision course,
01:18
which is coming up to us here on the screen right now,
01:21
Australia needs to start avoiding.
01:23
Slow to react by Slingsby
01:25
and that was there the moment he got the penalty
01:27
and they were tight together.
01:28
They've been affecting each other.
01:29
If we pause the action here
01:31
and we see how early those two boats are
01:33
compared to the British boat,
01:34
they're gonna have to go pretty slow
01:36
in these last few moments to the start line.
01:39
Fletcher, well, he's got space.
01:41
He knows he's on a good time run for the start line.
01:43
He's got a big gap in the middle of the fleet
01:46
and he winds it up.
01:47
He starts to aim straight at the line,
01:49
straight towards mark one
01:51
and his wing, his trimmers, the whole crew on board
01:54
are calling good timing, good timing.
01:56
So when that line does turn white,
01:58
he hits it at full speed right in the middle of the fleet.
02:01
But the crucial factor for Fletcher was he was going fast
02:04
and that was because he wasn't too early
02:07
turning back towards the start line.
02:10
Let's go back to the moment Canada engage with Australia.
02:14
We can see Canada turn their boat.
02:16
They're on a collision course with Australia.
02:18
Closest to the wind, so they're the giveaway boat
02:21
in this situation.
02:22
Seems we've got two options.
02:23
He's hoping to get round in front of Giles Scott,
02:26
the Canadian boat,
02:27
to keep his options open on the start line.
02:29
But he's got a huge area he could turn up into
02:32
away from Giles Scott.
02:33
He could take that right turn,
02:35
head away from the Canadian boat and keep the gap open.
02:38
He's compromised,
02:39
but it's gotta be better to avoid a penalty if he can,
02:42
because by taking that penalty,
02:44
he loses any chance of an equal start
02:46
and means he's definitely gonna have to start the race behind
02:49
and he's on the back foot.
02:51
Well, things were happening fast here in Sydney
02:54
and as we now can see, the two boats are overlapped.
02:56
What does that mean?
02:57
Well, it means the Canadian boat's alongside.
02:59
It's just got the front of its boat
03:01
past the back of the Australian boat.
03:03
They're overlapped.
03:04
They're also now on a collision course
03:06
and as soon as you're on a collision course,
03:08
you've got to keep clear as the giveaway boat.
03:10
Racing rules of sailing say the boat's closest to the wind,
03:13
we call it the windward boat, is the giveaway boat.
03:16
So Slingsby knows he's gotta keep clear,
03:18
but looking through his eyes,
03:21
does he think they're overlapped?
03:22
They're travelling at nearly 70, 75 kilometres an hour here.
03:26
The boat's some 20, 30 metres away from each other.
03:30
The front of Giles Scott's boat is 15, 17 metres away
03:33
from where he sits in the boat.
03:35
So to judge where the front of that boat is
03:37
is really hard at these speeds.
03:39
Slingsby was hoping he wasn't overlapped in the umpire booth.
03:43
Well, they're looking from directly above.
03:45
They've got that helicopter 2D view
03:47
that's accurate to about a centimetre out there.
03:50
So they can see all of this detail
03:53
coming really, really quickly onto their screen.
03:55
They see it in very black and white
03:56
and on the water, well, there's a lot of other things to see.
03:59
So those minutity can easily be missed.
04:01
But right now, Slingsby's a little bit too aggressive.
04:04
He needs to start taking avoiding action from Giles Scott,
04:07
or be very confident he can get across in front of him.
04:11
He couldn't get across in front.
04:12
He didn't take any avoiding action until too late.
04:15
And that was deemed to be too risky.
04:18
Big chance for collision.
04:19
Canada had to avoid that collision,
04:21
so the penalty was dished out to Slingsby.
04:23
He could have avoided it with a turn away
04:25
from Canada a lot earlier
04:26
and given himself the chance to start that race level.
04:29
Here we go.
04:30
One.
04:31
Hey, racing.
04:32
Protest it, Eddie.
04:33
Here's subject, big A's for racing.
04:34
Racing, racing.
04:35
Canada have decided to turn back to the start quite earlier,
04:38
a similar time to Australia.
04:39
They put themselves into fairly direct competition
04:43
with the Australians.
04:44
Now, in this situation, rules-wise,
04:46
no real risk on the Canadians.
04:48
But as soon as you're distracted by another boat,
04:51
you're getting yourself too close to the line too soon
04:54
to have a chance to give a big acceleration.
04:56
We can see on the right-hand side of them,
04:58
Great Britain quite well behind.
05:00
No one else other than themselves to think about
05:03
from a timing perspective back towards the start line.
05:05
So rules-wise, there was no risk on Canada
05:08
in this situation, really.
05:09
They were the right-of-way boat.
05:11
Australia were the ones that needed to keep clear.
05:13
But as soon as you're in a direct battle with the Australians,
05:16
you're sailing back towards the line too fast, too early,
05:20
and you're limiting your options for later in the start.
05:26
What a start.
05:27
Fletcher's at absolute speed.
05:28
On the inside, it's Canada.
05:30
Emirates, Great Britain are gonna be able to lead
05:32
at mark one here.
05:34
This start, we can see all of the boats ended up lined up,
05:38
much more similar timing back to the start line.
05:41
So once again, Slingsby loves that move
05:43
of being the first to turn back to the start.
05:45
But we see all three boats turning back at a similar time.
05:49
Plenty of respect out there on the start line in this one.
05:52
Not too much boat-on-boat confrontation.
05:54
All of them giving themselves a little bit of space.
05:56
And of course, space is so key in this final run-in
06:00
to be able to control your own destiny and your old timing.
06:02
No boat too close together.
06:04
Right, now it's just a race to hit that right-hand red line
06:08
on the right-hand side of our screen there.
06:10
Theoretically, Fletcher, optimally placed.
06:13
Lined up for the pole position here.
06:14
But we know that it's all about speed when the gun comes.
06:17
So who can time their run at the start line fastest?
06:20
They're all gonna have a straight line.
06:22
Not too much boat-on-boat confrontation.
06:24
But Fletcher a bit closer to the line at this moment.
06:26
A little bit later to accelerate.
06:28
And that's the difference in boat speed when the gun goes.
06:35
Pretty much picture perfect from those first two boats
06:38
into the line here, but a faster angle for Australia.
06:41
Fletcher makes one last aggressive move.
06:43
Windward boat must keep clear, of course.
06:45
We've heard that one before, haven't we?
06:46
But this time Slingsby does enough.
06:48
Just.
06:49
He's round the front.
06:50
Leads at mark one.
06:51
All the way down.
06:52
All the way down.
06:53
All the way down.
06:54
All the way down.
06:56
Let's freeze frame here and look back at the start.
06:58
We can see on this start the boat is not too interactive.
07:01
Not a very combative start here.
07:03
And that's all to do with the set up of the start line.
07:05
Often we see one position on the start.
07:08
It's indicated there is the pole position on our start line.
07:11
The blue triangles.
07:12
But it won't be biased by much.
07:14
So if you start there, you're gonna have less distance to mark one.
07:18
If you start nearer the bottom of our screen to the upwind end of the start line,
07:22
you've got a faster angle.
07:23
And there's not a lot of difference there.
07:25
So despite there being a pole position, there's not a lot in it.
07:28
So all the crews have decided, let's not fight too hard.
07:31
It's a windy day.
07:33
Gusty.
07:33
Hard to sail the boats here in New Zealand.
07:35
And penalty points for any interactions can be really costly.
07:39
We all know that from watching SailGP Racing.
07:42
So all the boats decide, let's give ourselves some space.
07:45
That space means it's just a race between them and the start line.
07:48
We don't need to worry too much about the other boats.
07:51
How well can we judge our timing as we turn towards the start line,
07:55
wind the speed up, and look to hit that line at the moment it turns white at full speed.
08:02
As soon as it's as windy as this, all the crews will be thinking,
08:04
what's my safest angle to sail in?
08:06
If I'm sailing too across the wind, can I handle the power of that?
08:10
If I can turn a little bit away from the wind, I might be going faster.
08:13
But again, can I fly the boat accurately at that high speed?
08:16
For the British team, they would have been thinking right now,
08:19
well, all things being equal, at least if I'm on the downwind end,
08:22
I'm on the inside at turn one.
08:24
That's one fact, one controllable thing I've got.
08:27
The other boats have got to go fast enough to get right round me
08:30
if they want to lead at mark one for Slingsby.
08:33
Well, he's thinking, okay, I'm going to have the fastest angle.
08:35
I'm just going to send my boat at mark one as absolutely flat out as I can,
08:40
and trust flight controller Jason Waterhouse to keep me in the water.
08:43
That's it from me with Risk and Reward.
08:47
Look forward to bringing you another episode soon.
