00:00Hello and welcome to Clomac Noise in County Offaly beside the Shannon River.
00:05This is an absolutely stunning sight.
00:08You can feel the presence of those long gone in every corner.
00:12One of Ireland's ancient sights dating back to 580.
00:16And later in the video, we will show you the best ways on how to get there.
00:20Right in the middle of Ireland, a spiritual sight.
00:24It's very hard to describe, but it's as if you were being watched over by those long gone.
00:29There are high crosses, two round towers.
00:32The high cross of the scriptures, one of the most amazing high crosses in the museum.
00:37It's carved from one piece of sandstone around 900 AD.
00:42There is no sandstone in the area.
00:44The nearest would be in County Mayo or on the south coast.
00:48If you can imagine the effort involved in getting the sandstone here from so many miles away,
00:52probably down the Shannon on a boat.
00:55Clomac Noise was originally thought to be a small town
00:58and was plundered by the Vikings and the Normans on many occasions.
01:02Hence their round towers where all the valuables were kept.
01:06What you also see here are the replicas of the primitive houses the people lived in at the time.
01:11There are four churches within the site
01:13and a modern graveyard used by the local community just next to it.
01:17If you like what we're doing, please hit the bell and subscribe.

01:31How do you get here?
01:32Getting to Clomac Noise, you can do in a few ways.
01:35There is a rather unusual one.
01:37And that is by day trip on the river by boat from Athlone.
01:41Viking tours departing from Athlone Castle.
01:44The cruise travels downstream on the river Shannon to Clomac Noise.
01:48During this meandering voyage, there is live commentary on local history, monastic life,
01:53and the surrounding flora and fauna.
01:55Apart from driving a car, you can also get to Clomac Noise by Irish Rail to the Clara Town stop,
02:01then the 850 bus.
02:03If you download the Transport for Ireland app on your phone, it will give you all the details.
02:07There are some tour companies that also visit the site as well.
02:12We have been here twice.
02:13Once in May, and then again in October, when you can see the Shannon was flooding.
02:19Looking down, we have the Church of the Nuns.
02:22That's to the east of the site, and it was finished in 1167.
02:27It has beautiful stonework carving on the arches on the entrance into the church,
02:32and is located just past the site on the back road close to the new graveyard.
02:36Finally, thanks for staying with us.
02:39Please subscribe, and we hope you will join us in the next one, which will be published soon.
