Hello from the Bureau with your national weather forecast as you have a look at what we can expect
00:03
heading into tomorrow. That's Friday the 16th of May. First a look at the synoptic map and there
00:09
are a number of weather features that we're keeping a close eye on across eastern Australia.
00:12
A surface trough across southern Queensland and inland New South Wales, another surface
00:16
trough off the east coast and together these are drawing in winds from the south and also the east
00:21
producing widespread areas of showers and thunderstorms. And through the day tomorrow
00:25
we'll see these areas of showers and thunderstorms become more widespread,
00:28
particularly through southeast Queensland and also northeast New South Wales heading into the
00:32
evening. And this low pressure system off the east coast will gradually start to drift away into the
00:36
Tasman Sea. Further south though there is a weak cold front coming up from the south but it won't
00:41
have too much impact on the mainland, mainly showers about western Tasmania, southern Victoria and southern
00:46
parts of South Australia. And the reason why it's not having much of an impact is because there is a
00:50
large high pressure system in its way. This is really dominating weather across the west and the north of
00:55
the country pushing warm winds all the way to the west coast of WA. So now a state by state closer
01:01
look starting off in Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms for central parts of the state
01:05
initially but then through the afternoon these will become more widespread and extend into southeast
01:09
Queensland including through Brisbane. There is a possibility of moderately heavy falls through the
01:14
central highlands and also down into the northern and eastern parts of the Darling Downs. And under that cloud
01:19
cover temperatures will be slightly below average inland but closer to average across the coast. In Cairns, a top of 30
01:25
degrees and partly cloudy conditions. And in Brisbane showers from the afternoon and into the evening
01:30
with a top of 24 degrees and there is a chance of a thunderstorm there. In New South Wales we see
01:35
showers across the coast with that low pressure system initially but then through the afternoon
01:39
showers and thunderstorms will build across northeastern parts of the state and there is a possibility of
01:44
moderate falls north of about Coffs Harbour and showers and thunderstorms will extend into the western
01:48
slopes and also into northwestern parts of the state. It will be a mild day across the state. In Cairns,
01:54
14 degrees with a possible light shower and in Sydney 21 with showers in the morning mostly clearing by
01:59
the afternoon. In Victoria now, early morning fog and frost through inland parts and we'll see a few
02:05
showers about the southwest coast in the morning but as that cold front moves through from the west
02:09
those light showers will extend into the central coast and also up into southern parts of the Wimmera
02:14
but not much in the way of rainfall is expected, generally less than about two millimeters or so.
02:19
And into the evening we'll see a few showers pushed into the Melbourne metro area,
02:23
mostly through some of those south eastern suburbs. So Melbourne itself a possible late shower at the
02:27
top of 19 degrees and dry across northern parts of the state. In Tasmania it's all about that cold
02:33
front so we'll see a few showers about the west coast in the morning but as that system moves in
02:37
from the west showers become heavier and push into southern parts of the state including around the
02:42
Hobart area. So Hobart top of 16 degrees with showers most likely in the afternoon and evening.
02:47
The showers won't make it to the east coast though so it will remain mostly dry across
02:51
Launceston and other parts of northern Tasmania. To South Australia, morning showers about coastal parts
02:57
and we will see those showers extend into agricultural areas but they won't get anywhere
03:01
further north than about Port Augusta and again rainfall totals generally two millimeters or less
03:06
so not expecting too much in the way of rainfall. Adelaide will see a few showers and we could see some
03:11
heavier falls about the Mount Lofty ranges otherwise dry across the north. Adelaide 19 degrees with showers through the day.
03:18
Over towards the west, this high pressure system is pushing a few showers onto the south coast
03:22
but we won't see too much in the way of rainfall pushing further inland than that
03:26
and we will see those easterly winds pushing warm air all the way to the west coast so Perth
03:30
continues its run of above average temperatures for May reaching a top of 26 degrees. Very warm
03:35
across the Pilbara but it will be quite a windy day including up in Karratha. Finally across northern
03:41
Australia another dry day across the Kimberley and the NT with the south easterly winds pushing through
03:45
that dry air as well but we will really see those nighttime temperatures fall dipping down to just
03:50
five degrees tomorrow morning in Alice Springs then the top of 22 degrees and sunny in Darwin with
03:55
the top of 33. That's your forecast for today stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings on
