Hello from the Bureau. It's Monday the 19th of August and we're going to take a
00:04
look at the weather for the first half of this week. I want to show you here a
00:08
bit of a weather system in the Bight in South Australia. It's a low-pressure system
00:11
and a trough, associated trough, through South Australia at the moment. This is
00:15
the same weather system that we saw across Western Australia across the
00:19
weekend, which did bring moderate to heavy rainfall totals, as well as your
00:23
damaging wind gust as it moved through that part of the world across the
00:27
weekend. We are expecting it to be a little bit less intense as it crosses South
00:31
Australia today, but we'll get to that in just a moment. I wanted to point out as
00:34
well we do have a bit of an easterly trajectory of winds across the east
00:37
coast of the country at the moment, and that's bringing some onshore showers
00:41
everywhere from southeast Queensland through to the southern New South Wales
00:45
coast. And similarly on the other side of the country in Western Australia, we do
00:49
have some showers in the wake of the cold front, which we saw cross over the
00:53
weekend. As we play this loop for the rest of today, we can see the system sort
00:59
of move towards the east. Like I said, the forecast for South Australia is a bit
01:02
less intense than that for Western Australia. Isolated showers and the
01:06
chance of a gusty thunderstorm is the forecast, and that includes Adelaide
01:09
which does have the chance of a thunderstorm on the forecast. Now if we
01:13
move into tomorrow, we can see the system continue to move towards the east, and by
01:18
the time we get to the afternoon we can see it spread across much of southern
01:22
New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Rainfall totals could be around that 20
01:26
millimetre mark through the northern slopes of Victoria there, and as well as
01:29
the mountainous parts of northern Tasmania. The capitals though, Melbourne
01:34
and Hobart, will be a fair whack drier with only a few millimetres on the
01:37
forecast. Could be a windy day in Melbourne as well as the system comes
01:41
through. Now as we play the animation through the day on Wednesday, we can see
01:48
this system sort of continue to move to the east as we see another cold front
01:54
move towards the southeast of the country from across the Bight. By the time
01:58
we get to a late Wednesday, all that's going to do is keep that shower activity
02:02
going for another day through southern parts of South Australia, Victoria and
02:06
Tasmania there. Now in terms of temperatures for the Tuesday, we are
02:11
looking at warmer than average temperatures across much of the
02:14
country, especially southwest Queensland and northwest New South Wales, where it
02:18
will be quite a bit warmer than average. Southwestern parts of Western Australia
02:23
are a notable exception with temperatures cooler than average in the wake of that
02:26
cold front, as well as the southeastern parts of Queensland and northeastern
02:31
parts of New South Wales with that onshore shower activity a little bit
02:34
cooler than average. And a very similar story for the Wednesday as well, with
02:38
temperatures across the central parts of the country really quite warm, remaining
02:42
closer to average across southwest WA and southeast Queensland, northeast New
02:48
South Wales. A bit of a spoiler alert for this week and we are expecting some of
02:51
these warmer temperatures from central Australia to be dragged into the
02:54
southeast of the country for a weekend that is much warmer than the one we've
02:59
just had. Right, that's all we've got for today. You can keep up to date with our
03:02
forecasts and warnings on the Bureau app and on the website, and we'll see you
03:07
next time.
