Hello, from the Bureau, Angus here to break down the major weather stories for the first
00:04
half of this week.
00:05
And for eastern Australia, that's cold temperatures, frosty nights, but mostly sunny overhead conditions.
00:10
For the west though, it's yet another winter cold front approaching.
00:14
Here's the overview of how the map looks as we move into the new week, with the major
00:17
weather players being this red H, high pressure, which brings settled and sunny conditions
00:22
but in winter brings cold and frosty nights.
00:25
There's also a low in the Tasman, which did impact the country over the weekend just gone,
00:29
and will continue to do so with some dangerous coastal conditions.
00:33
Then as we move into Wednesday, we shift our focus from the east to the west.
00:37
This blue line with the triangles is a cold front approaching southern parts of western
00:42
Australia on Wednesday, and arriving with a bit of a bang as well.
00:46
But for the major population centres in the centre and east of the country, it's going
00:50
to be those cold temperatures as you get out of bed and start your day, which is probably
00:53
the main talking point weather-wise this week.
00:56
This is frost for Tuesday morning, a very chilly night tonight, very icy and extensive
01:01
as well.
01:02
Tasmania up to Queensland up to the Northern Territory, lots of places seeing a clear night,
01:06
a calm night, and watching those temperatures just plummet overnight towards or below zero
01:11
degrees for many areas.
01:13
In fact some parts of the east will be as low as minus four degrees overnight tonight,
01:17
including Canberra which got to minus five degrees this morning, so potentially could
01:22
even be a degree or so colder than that.
01:25
A little bit more mild along the coastline from Adelaide through Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney
01:29
and Brisbane, but single digits overnight tonight no matter where you look.
01:33
Rinse and repeat stuff for the following day, so Wednesday morning, another very frosty
01:37
one, crunchy underfoot and taking a while for that frost to thaw out even after the
01:42
sun gets up, because, no surprise, those temperatures are low again, low single digits into the
01:46
negatives for some areas.
01:48
It's very chilly on Wednesday, and still Thursday, Friday, more cold nights through the second
01:52
half of the week.
01:54
While we're on the east coast, we do want to check out what's going on over the Tasman,
01:57
this was the low here that did bring some snow through the course of the weekend, it's
02:00
now over the ocean but still seeing some strong southerly winds up the east coast, so a breezy
02:05
day for people along the New South Wales coast today, and again tomorrow, but perhaps more
02:10
significantly than the breezy conditions, the giant waves which are being whipped up
02:14
by the strong wind, five to seven metre waves for the New South Wales coastal waters for
02:21
Tuesday morning, that will make things very hazardous for anyone trying to brave their
02:25
boats over the next few days, and potentially some hazardous coastal conditions for people
02:30
on the land, this is what we call a coastal hazards warning, and it's saying if you're
02:34
at the beaches, if you're at the coastline along the New South Wales coast, from Port
02:38
Macquarie down past Wollongong down to the south coast, potentially some dangerous conditions,
02:43
big waves into the shallows and maybe some water up and over low lying coastal roads
02:48
and properties.
02:50
Now let's switch focus to the western side of the country and we're going to look at
02:52
what's happening on Wednesday, so not tomorrow but the day after tomorrow as a cold front
02:56
approaches Perth, not likely to arrive during the day but once we get to the evening and
03:00
into the night, that's when that cold front will arrive and it's going to bring with it
03:04
a bit of a bang as well, rain with some pockets of heavy falls, thunderstorms including some
03:10
severe thunderstorms which could bring us damaging wind gusts, lightning, thunder and
03:15
hail all possible.
03:16
We could well see some severe weather warnings get issued ahead of this event so do keep
03:20
your eyes out if you're in the south west of the country.
03:23
Compared to the front that went through over the weekend just a day or so ago, this one
03:27
will likely be a bit stronger, a bit more wind and bring a bit more rain with it as
03:31
well, potentially more than 50mm for parts of the south west, not seeing that much inland
03:37
but maybe a welcome 15mm.
03:40
That's all from me for today, stay up to date through the Bureau website and app, thanks
03:43
for watching.
