Rain building across western half of the country

The first weekend of August expected to be settled in the east and wet in the west.

00:00Hello from the Bureau with your weekend weather update.

00:03And this weekend we're expecting drier and more subtle conditions across eastern Australia,

00:08but daytime and nighttime temperatures will remain quite cool.

00:11Elsewhere though, it's a different story in Western Australia with rain building and

00:15this will extend into parts of the Northern Territory and South Australia.

00:19First though, let's look at the synoptic situation.

00:22And on Friday, we do see this low pressure system over the Tasman Sea start to move away

00:26from the coast, and it's this system which brought large waves and showers to New South

00:30Wales and parts of South East Queensland.

00:33We do see a ridge of high pressure building behind it, and this will mean a clear but

00:37cold night across the eastern seaboard.

00:39Elsewhere, there is a weak cold front brushing parts of coastal South Australia, southern

00:44Victoria and Tasmania.

00:45We're not expecting too much in the way of rainfall there, but we will see showers

00:49heavy at times continuing about Queensland's Cassowary Coast.

00:54As for Saturday though, we do see this rain band across Western Australia start to build

00:58and extend from the Pilbara and interior, and into parts of the southern Northern Territory

01:02and South Australia by Saturday evening.

01:05And these parts of Australia don't typically see rainfall at this time of year, with the

01:09average August monthly rainfall generally being less than 10mm.

01:13But with this rain band though, we could see multiple times the monthly average rainfall.

01:18So do keep an eye on the latest warnings and updates, but at this stage the flood risk

01:22is considered to be low.

01:24Elsewhere for Saturday, we do see a couple of showers for parts of Victoria including

01:28Melbourne, but dry and plenty of sunshine returning to Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and

01:33much of Northern Australia.

01:35Into Sunday, we see a couple more showers brushing the south coast of Victoria and also

01:40through Tasmania, but we do see clear skies continuing for Brisbane, Sydney and for much

01:45of Queensland.

01:46But this rain band will push a little bit further east, and by Sunday afternoon it will

01:50slow down and become a little bit more patchy, but we could see some showers pushing into

01:55southwest Queensland, western New South Wales and parts of northern Victoria.

02:00And even as early next week, this rain band is expected to push further towards the east

02:04coast.

02:05There is a little bit of disagreement with the models at this stage, but keep an eye

02:08on the forecasts if you are living particularly in southeast Queensland and northeast New

02:12South Wales.

02:13Elsewhere across the country, a dry Sunday for Perth, and that's ahead of the next

02:18cold front coming through from the west.

02:20Having a look at the temperatures now, and we can see for much of southern Australia

02:24it will be quite a cool day, but of note are temperatures under this thick cloud band in

02:28western Australia with maximum temperatures between 4 to 10 degrees below average.

02:33We'll see generally cool to mild conditions for elsewhere, Sydney 19, Brisbane 23, plenty

02:38of sunshine, but it will be cloudy in Melbourne atop of just 14 degrees.

02:43We don't see much change to the east coast on Sunday, remaining cool but also warming

02:47up slightly across parts of New South Wales and Queensland.

02:50And we do see that cold air extend into south Australia, just maximums of 14 and 15 about

02:55western parts of the state.

02:56But it will be generally mild across western Australia, and remaining hot and humid in

03:00the north.
