00:00Tallahassei é um lugar onde muitas coisas estranhas acontecem.
00:07Mas o caso de Eligador Mike Williams é um verdadeiro misterio.
00:14Ele disse, eu vou ver você Monday e ele entrou. Pouf, desapareceu.
00:18A comunidade está completamente loucada.
00:21Eu encontrei um jacete com a Mike Williams de um licença.
00:25As pessoas começaram a perceber que isso não parece certo.
00:29Essa história tem várias coisas para ele.
00:31Ele é paranoia que os policia estão vindo para o seu casa.
00:35Ele pediu para ela, não se chamar a polícia.
00:38Eu nunca me lembro que o que estamos lidando com tudo é um farce.
00:43O que aconteceu com Mike Williams?
00:55Para as pessoas, essa história é um ativante.
01:20E aí você está perguntando, como bem você realmente conhece os próximos?
01:35Mike e Denise Williams são high school sweethearts,
01:50e em 2000, eles estavam vivendo a boa vida em Tallahassee, Florida.
01:55A família flui quando sua filha Ainsley foi nascida.
02:00Ela é agora 18 anos e, sem dúvida,
02:04ela é a luz da sua vida.
02:07Eu diria que se Facebook existia na época, eles eram a Facebook família.
02:12A garota, parecem só como a mãe, a garota, a blonde hair.
02:16E Mike era como o bom joão.
02:19Mike ama o outdoors, e ele vai hunting e pesquisando most weekends.
02:24Mas muito como ele é um outdoorsman,
02:26a família vem primeiro.
02:28Mike cherished Denise.
02:30Ele colocou ela na pedestal.
03:03Eu pensei que ele se hunguia, e eu can hear ele singing para sua filha.
03:06Ele era muito engraçado.
03:08mas só um bom pai.
03:10Ele era muito feliz.
03:12Ele era muito feliz.
03:13Ele era muito feliz.
03:14Ele era muito feliz.
03:17Ele era muito feliz.
03:19Ele era muito feliz.
03:20Ele era muito feliz.
03:21A gente neste ano, quem era muito feliz.
03:22Ele era muito feliz.
03:23Ele era o final de uma semana mais rápida.
03:24Ele era mais feliz.
03:25com sua espécie, Denise.
03:27Ele e Denise
03:28estavam indo para o St. George
03:30Island area e ficaria
03:32overnight, então ele estava
03:33looking forward to that
03:34e ele disse, I'll see you
03:36Monday, e walked up.
03:48The following
03:48morning, December 16,
03:51Mike woke up early
03:52to drive up to Lake Seminole
03:55and squeeze some duck hunting
03:56in before the weekend getaway.
04:13Mike was supposed
04:14to be home by noon,
04:16but when he didn't show up,
04:19Denise became concerned
04:20because it was unusual
04:21for Mike to be late,
04:23and especially since they were
04:24planning a romantic weekend.
04:27Mike and his friend, Damon,
04:28had gone hunting
04:30just a week earlier,
04:32so Denise thinks that
04:34there's a chance
04:35Damon's with him now,
04:38but when she gets Damon
04:39on the phone
04:40and realizes that
04:42he's not with Mike,
04:44she starts to really worry.
04:46at that point,
04:48I told her I would come
04:49to her house,
04:50and I met her father there,
04:52and then we both drove
04:53to Lake Seminole.
04:56It takes about 45 minutes
04:58to get to the lake
04:59before they can start
05:00looking for Mike.
05:04But Damon's surprised
05:06when they get to the lake
05:07and they come across
05:09Mike's truck
05:10at a remote boat launch.
05:15It wasn't the official landing.
05:17It wasn't the same spot
05:18that we had hunted
05:18the weekend before.
05:22But more curious
05:23is that Mike isn't there.
05:31Sensing that something is amiss,
05:33Denise's dad calls for help.
05:35And with officers
05:38from the Florida
05:39Wildlife Conservation Commission,
05:42they begin searching for Mike.
05:45They recruit more people
05:47to help with the search,
05:49like Mike's best friend,
05:51Brian Winchester.
05:56At that point,
05:58we started walking the shores
06:00looking for him.
06:03When we talked
06:04to any duck hunters
06:05that were coming in
06:06off the pond that night,
06:07and nobody had seen a hunter
06:09or anything along the lines
06:11of Mike.
06:14That night,
06:15a cold front suddenly rolls in,
06:17and it goes below freezing.
06:20So for everyone's safety,
06:22the search is called off
06:23until the next morning.
06:27At dawn,
06:29Mike's now been missing
06:30for 24 hours,
06:31and so the search efforts
06:33have grown substantially.
06:36When I got there Sunday morning,
06:39the search was heavy,
06:42and it was continuing to build.
06:45There was multiple helicopters,
06:47multiple boats,
06:47and multiple volunteers.
06:50Soon after,
06:51Brian Winchester
06:52and his father
06:53found the boat.
06:54Mike's boat is discovered
06:5875 yards from the landing
07:00where Mike's truck was found,
07:02but it had been obscured
07:04by tall weeds
07:05in the marshland.
07:06Of course,
07:07everybody was looking
07:08at what was in the boat.
07:10There was a big bag
07:11of duck decoys
07:12and his gun
07:16and his scabbard.
07:19With the gun
07:20still in its case
07:21and the duck decoys
07:22undeployed,
07:23the authorities
07:24consider the possibility
07:25that Mike fell out
07:26of the boat
07:27when he set out
07:28on the lake.
07:30Lake Seminole
07:30was created
07:31when they dammed up
07:33a couple different rivers
07:34and flooded
07:35an old woody area
07:36and stumps are out there.
07:38It was possible
07:39that Mike had
07:40his stump
07:41fell out of his boat.
07:43People were thinking
07:44that if Mike
07:45fell out of the boat
07:45and he had his waders on,
07:47he might have drowned
07:47because if you go overboard
07:49with waders,
07:49they're going to fill up,
07:50they're going to suck to you
07:51and you're going to have
07:52a hard time getting out of them.
07:53Your waders are full of water.
07:55You're negative buoyancy,
07:56so you're suction
07:57to the bottom
07:58and then you drown.
08:00But as everyone
08:01takes a closer look
08:02at Mike's boat,
08:03something strikes them
08:05as odd.
08:09The gas tank was full.
08:11normally if you're running
08:13in a boat
08:13and the operator
08:14falls out,
08:15it circles
08:15until it runs out of gas.
08:18But it was like
08:19it had never been
08:19cranked up.
08:20after that,
08:24they pulled the gun out.
08:25It was an Upland Bird game
08:27shotgun,
08:29a very expensive gun.
08:31I'd never seen Mike
08:32take a gun
08:33like that
08:34into a duck boat.
08:36I thought it was
08:37most unusual.
08:39Things were not right
08:41by any means.
08:50As we got into
08:53the next week,
08:54it was only a few days
08:56before Christmas
08:57and it became
08:59very, very sad.
09:01At that point,
09:02it wasn't like
09:03a search for Mike.
09:05It was like
09:05a recovery.
09:08Every day,
09:09you had
09:10some type of
09:11government resource
09:12out there
09:12literally pulling
09:13every inch
09:14to see if they could
09:15find anything.
09:17Having
09:17cadaver dogs
09:18from all over
09:19the country
09:20come in
09:21and looking
09:21for this man.
09:26For Mike's mother,
09:28Miss Cheryl,
09:29it was incredibly
09:30difficult.
09:31but Miss Cheryl
09:33is a strong woman.
09:36She struggled,
09:37but Cheryl Williams
09:38held out hope
09:39that Mike
09:40was somewhere
09:41and she thought
09:42that he was alive.
09:45According to Clay
09:46Ketchum,
09:47unlike Cheryl,
09:48Mike's wife,
09:49Denise,
09:49quickly loses hope.
09:53From Denise's
09:54perspective,
09:55it was horrible.
09:56It was a tragedy.
09:58She just resorted
09:59to the fact
09:59that something tragic
10:00did happen
10:01to Mike
10:01and she was
10:02mourning the loss
10:03of her husband
10:05and father
10:05of her child.
10:13It's been two weeks
10:14since Mike
10:15disappeared
10:16and just before
10:18the new year,
10:19a fisherman
10:20finds a hat
10:21in the search area.
10:23The investigators
10:24show the hat
10:25to Mike's best friend
10:27and hunting buddy,
10:28Brian Winchester
10:29and Brian says
10:30is that it looks
10:31like a hat
10:31that Mike owned,
10:32but he can't
10:34be totally sure.
10:36But it did not
10:37have any of the signs
10:38that it had been
10:39in the water
10:39for a period of time.
10:40It didn't have
10:41any algae or slime.
10:44But it's strange
10:45because just days
10:46before,
10:47searchers were
10:48in the same area
10:49and didn't see the hat.
10:51Regardless,
10:52investigators believe
10:53it belonged to Mike
10:54and it's an indication
10:55he was there.
10:57So why can't
10:58they find him?
10:59at the end of 2000,
11:12a fisherman finds
11:13what authorities believe
11:14is Mike Williams' hat
11:16at Lake Seminole.
11:18They take the clothing item
11:20as a sign
11:21that Mike was
11:22at the reservoir
11:22on December 16th.
11:24However,
11:26the discovery
11:27of the hat
11:27leads investigators
11:29to a grim
11:31new theory.
11:34Brian Winchester
11:35was giving me
11:36an update
11:36on the search
11:37and he said,
11:38I hate to tell you this,
11:39but there is
11:40a possibility
11:41that Mike
11:41may have been
11:42eaten by alligators.
11:45There's a lot
11:45of alligators
11:46in Lake Seminole.
11:47And so the theory
11:48was either
11:49one,
11:50he went over
11:51and drowned
11:51and got eaten
11:52or two,
11:54he was waiting
11:54and an alligator
11:55got him.
11:57Investigators
11:58have the hat
11:59tested
11:59for traces
12:01of Mike's DNA.
12:03If Mike
12:04was eaten
12:04by alligators,
12:05if there was
12:06a significant
12:06blood loss,
12:08tissue loss,
12:10if any of that
12:10happened
12:11or only the evidence,
12:13it would be
12:13describable.
12:14But the test results
12:17show no trace
12:18of Mike
12:19Williams' DNA.
12:21More than
12:22700 man hours
12:24are dedicated
12:25to scouring
12:26the 10-acre patch
12:28of Lake Seminole,
12:30making this
12:30the most exhaustive
12:32search of that area
12:34since 1957,
12:36the year the lake
12:37first opened
12:38to the public.
12:43But investigators
12:44are no closer
12:45to finding Mike
12:46than the day
12:47they found his boat
12:48nearly two months
12:48earlier.
12:49And on February
12:5010th, 2001,
12:52the search
12:52for Mike Williams
12:53is officially
12:54called off.
12:58Denise decides
12:59to have a memorial
13:00service
13:01the following day.
13:05Even though
13:06Cheryl believes
13:07deep down
13:08that her son
13:09is still alive,
13:11she goes along
13:12with the memorial
13:13to support
13:14her daughter-in-law,
13:14Denise.
13:16I remember
13:17being at the funeral
13:18and just watching
13:19Denise and my heart
13:20just breaking
13:21for her
13:22and for Ansley.
13:24I mean,
13:24Ansley was 18 months old
13:26and her father was gone,
13:27and I was devastated
13:28for them.
13:30It was very emotional.
13:32You know,
13:32a few times
13:33that I get choked up,
13:35I was one of them.
13:35A week and a half
13:48after the memorial service,
13:50the Fish and Wildlife
13:51Commission releases
13:52Mike's accident report.
13:55There is no evidence
13:56of a drowning
13:57or a boating accident.
13:59And while authorities
13:59believe Mike went overboard,
14:01in the end,
14:02all the accident report
14:04can conclude
14:05is that Mike
14:06is still missing.
14:13Then,
14:14in June 2001,
14:16six months
14:17after Mike's disappearance,
14:19a fisherman finds
14:20a pair of rubber waders
14:22floating on the surface
14:24of Lake Seminole.
14:27And they're in the exact area
14:29where investigators believed
14:31Mike Williams drowned.
14:35But the waders
14:36are like new.
14:38It indicates
14:39to investigators
14:40that they could not
14:41have been floating
14:42on the surface
14:43of the lake
14:44for very long.
14:46Even though
14:46the waders
14:47didn't have alligator
14:48ripping, tearing,
14:50it was like
14:51an oh my gosh
14:52kind of moment.
14:55When they find them,
14:56they call
14:57Brian Winchester,
14:58Mike Williams' best friend.
15:00He comes over
15:01and identifies them
15:02as waders
15:03similar to the one
15:04that Mike owned.
15:06They took the waders
15:07and they checked them
15:08for any possible
15:10genetic material.
15:12There was nothing in them.
15:17The results
15:18only lead
15:19to more questions.
15:22Authorities
15:23turned to a local diver
15:24named Lamar English
15:25to see if there is
15:27anything
15:27at the bottom
15:28of the lake.
15:31I went to the lake
15:32to the area
15:33that they had marked
15:34where the waders
15:35were found
15:35and they wanted
15:36to see if anything
15:37was on the bottom.
15:40And literally
15:41just a couple
15:42of minutes
15:43after I hit the bottom
15:44and started searching
15:45I found
15:47a jacket.
15:48Lamar searches
15:54the area
15:55around the jacket
15:56to see if there's
15:58anything else
15:58down there
15:59and he finds
16:01another possible clue.
16:04I found
16:05a yellow flashlight
16:06like Mike Williams
16:08was known to carry.
16:10I instinctively
16:11just turned it on
16:11to see if it worked
16:12and it did.
16:13It was like
16:14it was brand new.
16:17When the diver
16:18gets to shore
16:19he begins
16:20searching the jacket.
16:23There was no slime,
16:25algae.
16:26There was literally
16:27hardly anything
16:28on it.
16:30Then Lamar
16:31makes a crucial discovery.
16:33In the left
16:35breast pocket
16:36there was
16:37Mike Williams
16:38hunting license.
16:40Like all of
16:41the other belongings
16:42that have been recovered
16:43the license
16:45is also
16:46in pristine condition.
16:49You would think
16:50that if it had been
16:50in the water
16:51for six months
16:51that it would have
16:52began to deteriorate
16:54like paper does.
16:55Although the evidence
16:56does raise eyebrows
16:58for authorities
16:59it's just further proof
17:00that Mike drowned
17:02at Lake Seminole.
17:03But the news
17:07doesn't sit well
17:08with Mike's mom
17:10Cheryl.
17:13She does not think
17:15that her son
17:16drowned.
17:18This mounting evidence
17:20led her to believe
17:21that somebody
17:22had hurt her son.
17:25She would write letters
17:26every day
17:27to state agencies
17:28to try to get
17:29resolution.
17:31Cheryl is convinced
17:32that Mike
17:33was a victim
17:33of foul play
17:34and she publicly
17:36pushes the FDLE
17:37to open a criminal
17:38investigation
17:39into her son's
17:40disappearance.
17:43But Cheryl gets
17:45a shocking response
17:47when Denise hears
17:49about it.
17:52Denise says that
17:53Cheryl needs to just
17:55accept the situation
17:56for what it is.
17:59Mike had been gone
18:01a very long time
18:02and Denise believed
18:03that it was
18:04a freak accident
18:05and Mike passed
18:07that way.
18:07but Cheryl Williams
18:09would not stop.
18:11She was constantly
18:12pushing and wanting
18:13for more investigation
18:15of where Mike was
18:16and Denise
18:17just couldn't
18:18take it.
18:20To her surprise,
18:21Denise tells Cheryl
18:23that if she continues
18:24to pursue
18:25a criminal investigation,
18:27she's going
18:28to be punished.
18:29The threat was
18:32that Ainsley
18:33would be withheld
18:34from seeing
18:36Ms. Cheryl
18:37if she continued
18:38to pursue answers.
18:43Cheryl is completely
18:45shocked,
18:46but she can't
18:48let go of the idea
18:49that her son's
18:51disappearance
18:51is really
18:52no accident.
18:54and she knows
18:57that she has
18:57to do everything
18:58she can
18:59to keep
19:00her son's
19:00case alive.
19:05You know,
19:06a mother's love
19:07is a mother's love
19:07and a mother
19:09will never let go
19:09of a child.
19:12And in fact,
19:13Denise does
19:14eventually forbid
19:16Cheryl from having
19:17any contact
19:18with the granddaughter
19:20that she adores.
19:24separation
19:25from her
19:26grandchild, too.
19:27She dearly,
19:28dearly loved.
19:29It was very difficult
19:30for Ms. Cheryl.
19:32But as far as
19:33after that,
19:37Ms. Cheryl
19:38mounted
19:38a one-woman
19:39campaign
19:40to find out
19:41what happened
19:41to her boy
19:42and just
19:44broke her heart.
19:46She would walk
19:47up and down
19:48sidewalks
19:49holding Mike's
19:50picture
19:50and sign up.
19:51Cheryl became
19:54very vocal
19:55and published
19:55the newspaper ad
19:56and created posters
19:57and billboards
19:58that were up
19:59all around town.
20:00Cheryl Williams
20:01speaks to anyone
20:03and everyone
20:04that she can.
20:05I want the world
20:06to know
20:07he was a good person.
20:08He was a wonderful
20:09father,
20:10wonderful son,
20:11wonderful brother,
20:13and it's horrible
20:14not knowing
20:15what happened to him.
20:16After more than
20:22three years
20:23of pushing
20:24the FDLE,
20:26Cheryl Williams
20:27finally receives
20:28a letter
20:28that may actually
20:29help her cause.
20:32Cheryl Williams
20:33contacted
20:34an alligator
20:35specialist
20:36at Florida State
20:37University.
20:38What she found out
20:39is that alligators
20:40don't eat
20:40during the wintertime
20:41because they
20:43more or less
20:44hibernate.
20:44but even
20:46if they did
20:46it's impossible
20:47for an alligator
20:48to devour
20:49somebody whole
20:50without leaving
20:51unfortunately
20:53evidence.
20:54It's a violent
20:55attack
20:56and there's
20:57plenty of evidence
20:58and none
20:59of that was there.
21:01In an instant
21:02Cheryl realizes
21:04Mike's disappearance
21:05had nothing
21:06to do with
21:06an accident
21:07or alligators
21:08but it must
21:10have been
21:10foul play.
21:11in 2004
21:25Cheryl Williams
21:26receives a letter
21:27from an alligator
21:28expert
21:29stating
21:29it's impossible
21:31that alligators
21:32had consumed
21:33her son
21:34Mike Williams.
21:34after Cheryl
21:38gets the letter
21:39she marches
21:40straight to
21:41FDLE.
21:45Especially
21:46with Donnie Branch
21:47and myself
21:48had an audience
21:49with Miss Williams
21:50she started
21:51to tell us
21:52the story
21:52and she presented
21:54the letter.
21:56Cheryl Williams
21:57was pushing
21:57the right buttons
21:58to get people
22:00to look at
22:00the case again
22:01and realize
22:02this doesn't
22:03look right.
22:05While the letter
22:06from the expert
22:07is a good start
22:08in order to
22:09reclassify
22:10Mike's missing
22:11person's case
22:12as a criminal
22:12investigation
22:13investigators need
22:14to produce
22:15sufficient evidence
22:16of foul play.
22:18In this case
22:18that is extremely
22:20problematic.
22:21At the time
22:23of Mike's
22:23disappearance
22:23Game and Fish
22:24thought they were
22:25investigating
22:26both an accident.
22:27There was never
22:28any innuendo
22:28of any criminal
22:29activity.
22:31The disappearance
22:33was never
22:34treated as a crime.
22:36So the bronco,
22:38the boat,
22:39and the gun
22:41were never
22:42dusted for
22:43fingerprints.
22:44And so
22:45if a crime
22:46had taken place
22:47all of the evidence
22:49was long gone.
22:52So investigators
22:53have to start
22:54from the beginning.
22:57I got these
22:58cute folders
22:59of all the information
23:00and I started
23:01looking at
23:01all these
23:02different angles
23:02trying to find
23:03anything that
23:04could be
23:05identified as
23:05evidence of
23:06foul play.
23:07And when you
23:08didn't have any
23:08evidence to begin
23:09with, it's
23:11even tougher.
23:12With no leads,
23:14investigators have
23:15to ask,
23:16did Mike
23:16intentionally vanish?
23:18one of the circulating
23:20thoughts around the time
23:22was that Mike
23:23just disappeared
23:23on his own.
23:24He just walked
23:24away from his
23:25life, his family,
23:26because he wasn't
23:27happy.
23:28Mike was a frugal
23:29individual and money
23:31would stress him
23:32out.
23:3430 days prior to
23:35Mike's disappearance,
23:36Mike shared with me
23:37concern that he was
23:39having with Denise
23:40and it was over an
23:41expense that occurred
23:43on a MasterCard
23:44and it exceeded the
23:45limit.
23:47And Mike was letting
23:48it get the best of his
23:50emotions.
23:53They're a married couple.
23:55Married couples argue.
23:56They fight.
23:56It's life.
23:58Denise and Mike
23:59had some issues.
24:01But Mike had a daughter
24:02he loved.
24:04She was young.
24:05He was not going to
24:06leave her.
24:06Anselie was his life
24:08and he would have done
24:09anything for that
24:10little girl.
24:11He just lived for
24:12that child.
24:16Convinced that Mike
24:18would never walk
24:20away from his life,
24:22investigators do
24:23a deeper search
24:25and that's when
24:27they find a possible
24:29clue.
24:31While looking through
24:32Mike's files,
24:33particularly his
24:33insurance policies,
24:35Investigator Wester
24:36realizes that Denise
24:37started looking into
24:39insurance claims
24:40when the search for
24:41Mike was still
24:42underway.
24:44In Florida,
24:45typically someone
24:46needs to be missing
24:47for about five years
24:49before they can be
24:51declared legally dead
24:52and the family can
24:54collect on a life
24:55insurance policy.
24:59But Denise gets
25:00her payout in just
25:01six months,
25:02which is record time.
25:04How did she do that?
25:06As he digs into the
25:08paperwork,
25:09Investigator Wester
25:10discovers that
25:12Denise filed a petition
25:13in probate court
25:14to declare her spouse
25:16legally dead.
25:19And that's a move
25:20that's required
25:21so that she can
25:22collect benefits,
25:23including life
25:24insurance.
25:26And on July 29th,
25:272001,
25:29a judge signs
25:29a presumptive death
25:31certificate for Mike
25:32Williams.
25:32The probate court
25:34concludes that
25:35the evidence
25:36that was found
25:37in the lake
25:37is compelling enough
25:39to show that Mike
25:40disappeared at the
25:42reservoir.
25:43And with that,
25:44Denise Williams
25:45collects a windfall
25:47of well over
25:48$1.5 million
25:49from Mike's
25:51life insurance
25:52policies.
25:53While reviewing
25:55the insurance
25:55paperwork,
25:56Investigator Wester
25:57notices another
25:59interesting detail.
26:02It had been
26:04discovered that
26:05Mike's best friend,
26:06Brian Winchester,
26:07was the insurance
26:08salesman who sold
26:09Denise and Mike
26:10a very large
26:11life insurance policy
26:12on Mike's life.
26:14And only six months
26:16before Mike
26:17Williams disappeared.
26:20And then
26:21investigators are
26:22immediately struck
26:24by an interesting
26:25turn of events.
26:27Brian and Mike's
26:30widow,
26:31Denise,
26:32are engaged.
26:37It'd catch you
26:38a little bit off,
26:39but at some point
26:41Brian Winchester
26:41and his wife
26:42got divorced
26:43and then
26:44Brian and Denise
26:45end up together.
26:47I was surprised,
26:49but it's
26:50got to be tough.
26:51When I'm lost
26:52a spouse
26:52and when I'm lost
26:54his best friend.
26:54anything that we
26:56heard was just
26:57that their loss
26:58of Mike
26:59is what brought
26:59them together.
27:04Investigator Wester
27:05wonders if Brian
27:06and Denise
27:06were having an affair
27:07prior to Mike's
27:09disappearance
27:10and if they conspired
27:11to get Mike
27:12out of the picture
27:13and collect
27:14his insurance money.
27:16Investigators
27:17arranged to interview
27:18both Denise
27:19and Brian
27:20hoping to get
27:21answers.
27:22But when they
27:25meet with Denise,
27:26it's not at all
27:27what they expect.
27:29Talking to Denise,
27:31she had retained
27:32a lawyer
27:33and exercised
27:34her rights.
27:37So our
27:38interaction
27:39was
27:39cold.
27:42She knew
27:43not to answer
27:44until her lawyer
27:46had an opportunity
27:46to object
27:47to the question.
27:48I would assume
27:50that if you're
27:51not guilty
27:52and you got
27:53your lawyer present,
27:54why don't you
27:55answer the questions?
27:57Instead
27:58of being
27:59someone
28:00who would
28:01appreciate
28:02what they were
28:03doing
28:03to find Mike,
28:05she is stone
28:06cold.
28:06I just
28:09didn't
28:09understand
28:10how
28:10this
28:10woman
28:10is
28:11just
28:11clammed up
28:13in a room
28:13and it was
28:15the most
28:15uncomfortable
28:16that I've
28:17ever been
28:18trying to
28:18talk to
28:19somebody.
28:21However,
28:22when it's
28:22time for
28:22investigators
28:23to interview
28:24Brian,
28:25he's
28:25surprisingly
28:26chatty.
28:28The first
28:29time I met
28:29Brian,
28:30we're just
28:30asking him
28:31to establish
28:32his alibi.
28:32He said
28:35he woke up
28:36and just
28:37stayed around
28:37the house
28:38and at
28:393 o'clock
28:39drove into
28:40his former
28:41spouse's
28:41family's
28:42Christmas
28:42gathering
28:42and he
28:43even described
28:44the vehicle
28:44that they
28:45were in
28:46and everything.
28:48But the
28:49interesting thing
28:50is that
28:50police had
28:51already done
28:52their homework.
28:53They had
28:54spoken with
28:54his ex-wife.
28:56The alibi
28:57that he gave
28:58us wasn't
28:58accurate.
29:01Brian's
29:01ex-wife
29:02and her
29:02family
29:03claimed
29:03that they
29:03didn't
29:04see Brian
29:04until 5
29:05o'clock
29:06on the
29:06night
29:06that Mike
29:07went missing.
29:08Wester
29:09also discovers
29:10that during
29:11the same
29:12week as
29:13Mike's
29:13memorial,
29:15Brian
29:16Winchester
29:16met with
29:18an attorney
29:19to discuss
29:19how a
29:20missing
29:20person
29:21could be
29:22declared
29:23dead.
29:25The attorney
29:25provided
29:26a list
29:27of things
29:29that would
29:30be needed
29:30for him
29:31to issue
29:32a presumptive
29:33death certificate.
29:34One of those
29:34things was
29:35something in
29:36the lake
29:36that could
29:36be identified
29:37as Mike's.
29:39Within weeks,
29:41all these things
29:41show up in
29:42the lake,
29:43which led to
29:45convincing the
29:46judge to issue
29:47a presumptive
29:47death certificate.
29:49Once Denise
29:50has the certificate,
29:51she can show
29:52it to the
29:52insurance companies
29:53and cash in
29:54on Mike's
29:55policies.
29:55for the first
29:57time,
29:58it was like,
29:58we really
29:59did have
29:59something.
30:02Even though
30:02authorities
30:03believe they
30:04have two
30:05likely suspects,
30:07charges can't
30:08be filed
30:09because
30:10Investigator
30:11Wester can't
30:12prove that
30:12the evidence
30:13that was found
30:14in the lake
30:14was planted
30:15by Brian
30:16Winchester.
30:18The evidence
30:19is all just
30:20circumstantial.
30:21There's no body.
30:22There's no remains.
30:23What do you do?
30:23Short of a
30:25confession,
30:25all investigators
30:26can do is
30:27continue looking
30:28into their
30:29likely suspects
30:30and hope to
30:31uncover something
30:32substantial enough
30:33to press charges.
30:36Meanwhile,
30:37Brian moves in
30:38with Denise
30:39and in 2005,
30:41they're married
30:42and the lack
30:44of any movement
30:45on Mike
30:46Williams'
30:46disappearance case
30:48finally takes
30:49its toll
30:49and the case
30:50goes cold.
30:53When you lose
30:55someone
30:56and there's
30:58no resolution
30:58to it,
30:59you can't move
31:00forward with life.
31:02You're just stuck.
31:04There's just
31:04too many questions
31:05and I think
31:07as time went on,
31:08that's what
31:08haunted Mike's mother.
31:10Until God
31:11tells me
31:12in my heart
31:12that that child
31:13is dead,
31:14I cannot give up
31:15looking for him.
31:1616 years
31:21have passed
31:22and astonishingly
31:23there are no new
31:24developments
31:24in the Mike
31:25Williams case.
31:27For some,
31:28his memory
31:29has faded.
31:34The morning
31:34of August 5th,
31:352016,
31:37Denise gets
31:37into her
31:38gold suburban
31:38to go to work.
31:39and while
31:43Denise is
31:44driving,
31:44she sees
31:45someone
31:46climbing
31:46over her
31:47back seat.
31:51He stuck
31:51a gun
31:52in her ribs
31:52and told her
31:53to drive.
31:55Denise
31:56is completely
31:57shocked
31:57when her
31:58captor
31:58turns out
31:59to be
31:59her second
32:00husband,
32:01Brian.
32:03And he
32:04is in a rage.
32:07Brian
32:08was an
32:08alcoholic.
32:09and apparently
32:10drinking
32:11and drinking
32:11heavily.
32:13Denise felt
32:14that she
32:14was being
32:15verbally abused
32:16and wanted
32:17the marriage
32:18to end.
32:19She wouldn't
32:19talk to him
32:20and wouldn't
32:20see him.
32:22What Denise
32:22does not
32:23realize
32:24is that she
32:24has pushed
32:25Brian to
32:25his breaking
32:26point.
32:27Brian demands
32:28that Denise
32:29drive to
32:30a remote
32:30location.
32:32Denise
32:32was very,
32:33very nervous
32:33and she
32:34was very
32:35much afraid
32:35for her
32:36life.
32:37Thinking
32:38fast,
32:38Denise
32:38drives into
32:39the parking
32:40lot
32:40of a
32:41CVS
32:42pharmacy.
32:45She
32:45just pulled
32:46in because
32:47it was a
32:47place that
32:48was public
32:49where there
32:50would be
32:50cameras
32:50and there
32:52was nothing
32:52he could
32:52do about
32:53it.
32:56At that
32:56moment,
32:58Denise
32:59asks him,
33:00is this the
33:00day we
33:01both die?
33:03Brian told
33:03Denise that
33:04he couldn't
33:05live without
33:05her,
33:06that he
33:06was going
33:06to kill
33:07himself
33:07and that
33:08he was
33:08there
33:08because she
33:09wouldn't
33:09pick up
33:10the phone
33:10and answer
33:11his text.
33:13Denise plays
33:14along and
33:15it takes
33:16nearly an
33:17hour,
33:17but she
33:18finally talks
33:20Brian off
33:20the ledge.
33:22She convinced
33:23him to let
33:25her go.
33:27But he made
33:28her promise
33:29that she
33:31would not
33:31go to the
33:32police.
33:35He leaves,
33:37she drives
33:37straight to
33:38Leon County
33:39Sheriff's
33:39Department
33:40and police
33:43arrested him
33:44that day.
33:46Brian is
33:47charged with
33:47kidnapping,
33:48armed burglary
33:49and domestic
33:50assault and
33:51when word gets
33:51out, the
33:52media swarms.
33:54When I heard
33:55Brian Winchester
33:55kidnap Denise,
33:57I was beside
33:58myself.
33:58It
34:00happening in
34:01the connections
34:01to the case
34:02that it does
34:03have and
34:04the intertwining
34:05of the people
34:06that are
34:07involved in
34:07it, it
34:08was just
34:08another thing
34:09to make
34:10you step
34:10back and
34:11just go
34:11wow.
34:16Brian's
34:17record was
34:17spotless.
34:18He had not
34:19been in
34:19trouble with
34:19the law
34:20and that
34:22makes you
34:22kind of
34:22wonder how
34:23it got
34:23to where
34:24it got.
34:25During
34:26their
34:26investigation,
34:27authorities
34:28discover
34:29that on
34:29the same
34:30day as
34:31the
34:31kidnapping,
34:32Brian had
34:33had lunch
34:34with a
34:35friend.
34:36And the
34:36authorities
34:37question him
34:38and he
34:38tells them
34:40why Brian
34:41did it.
34:43I think
34:44he's
34:45paranoid
34:45that police
34:46are coming
34:47to his
34:47house saying
34:48that they've
34:49been talking
34:49to Denise
34:50and once
34:51the divorce
34:51is final,
34:53she is going
34:53to tell
34:54them what
34:55really happened
34:56with this
34:56guy that
34:57died.
34:58Do you
34:59remember
34:59the
34:59person
35:00name?
35:02Something
35:02Williams.
35:14After
35:15investigators
35:15speak to
35:16a witness
35:16about
35:17Denise
35:17Williams'
35:17abduction,
35:19Brian Winchester
35:19finds himself
35:20in court
35:21facing multiple
35:22charges including
35:23kidnapping.
35:23Brian
35:25pleads no
35:26contest to
35:27kidnapping
35:28Denise at
35:29gunpoint.
35:33Brian
35:34Winchester
35:34was a
35:35broken man
35:35in court.
35:36He cried
35:36repeatedly,
35:37he apologized
35:38repeatedly,
35:39and he hung
35:40his head.
35:43Start by
35:43stating your
35:43name,
35:44please.
35:44Denise
35:45Williams.
35:45The only
35:46person that
35:46spoke against
35:47Brian was
35:48Denise,
35:49and when
35:50she spoke,
35:50she was
35:51visibly
35:52shaking,
35:53shaking like
35:53a leaf.
35:54I live each
35:55day with the
35:56fear of his
35:56retaliation for
35:58my decision
35:58to tell.
36:01He will
36:02finish what
36:02he has
36:03started no
36:04matter what
36:04age he is
36:05when he's
36:06released.
36:07It comes
36:07down to
36:08my life or
36:09his, and
36:10I'm asking
36:11you please
36:12to choose
36:13mine.
36:13The 800-pound
36:15gorilla looming
36:16over the
36:16courtroom was
36:17would we
36:18learn more
36:18about Mike
36:19Williams'
36:19disappearance
36:20during that
36:20court hearing?
36:21Thanks,
36:22ma'am.
36:23But during
36:24her victim
36:24impact statement,
36:27Denise mentions
36:28nothing about
36:29the cold case
36:30involving Mike.
36:32Come on up
36:33with your
36:33client.
36:34On December
36:3419, 2017,
36:36Brian reaches a
36:37plea deal with
36:38prosecutors, and
36:39he is sentenced
36:40before the
36:40court.
36:41You're giving
36:42me 20 years,
36:4320 years.
36:44Good luck
36:44to you, sir.
36:46Brian and his
36:47attorney are
36:48shocked.
36:4920 years is a
36:50stiff sentence
36:52for someone who
36:53has no prior
36:54record.
36:56I think the
36:57fact that the
36:58judge imposed
36:58the sentence
36:59that he imposed,
37:00it's pretty clear
37:01that there was a
37:01lot more to
37:02this than just
37:03what happened
37:04that day.
37:05But we had
37:05to wait to
37:06learn that
37:07information.
37:10Fortunately,
37:10the wait isn't
37:11long.
37:12The very next
37:12day, an
37:13announcement
37:13is made
37:14that took
37:1417 years
37:15to come
37:16to light.
37:17After
37:17receiving new
37:18information,
37:19FDLE's
37:20crime scene
37:20unit and
37:21special agents
37:22spent days
37:23conducting an
37:23extensive search
37:24at an
37:25undisclosed
37:25location.
37:27That search
37:27led to the
37:28recovery of
37:29human remains
37:29and through
37:30DNA analysis
37:31that the
37:32human remains
37:33are those
37:34of Mike
37:34Williams.
37:35Further
37:35forensic
37:36analysis
37:36concluded
37:37that Mike
37:38Williams was
37:38in fact
37:39murdered.
37:39I know
37:41this new
37:41information
37:42raises only
37:42more questions.
37:44How was
37:44Mike murdered?
37:45Where was
37:46the new
37:46information
37:46obtained from?
37:48And do you
37:48have any
37:49suspects?
37:50Right now,
37:51I cannot and
37:52will not answer
37:53those questions.
37:54hearing the
37:57news that
37:58Mike not
37:58only had
37:58been found
37:59but that
37:59he had
38:00been murdered
38:00punched you
38:01in the gut.
38:02I mean,
38:03I think it's
38:03one thing
38:03to lose
38:04a person,
38:05but to
38:06know that
38:06that person
38:07potentially
38:08suffered is
38:09a lot harder
38:09thing to wrap
38:10your brain
38:10around.
38:12Why would
38:12someone want
38:13to harm
38:13him or
38:14what gives
38:14him the
38:14right to
38:15think that
38:15they could
38:16do that
38:16to my
38:17friend or
38:18a husband
38:18or a father?
38:22And Cheryl
38:22Williams,
38:23the only
38:23thing that
38:24got her
38:24through this
38:25is the
38:26hope that
38:26she would
38:26still see
38:27her son
38:27alive one
38:28day.
38:29And to
38:30then tell
38:30her that
38:31that's
38:31never going
38:31to happen
38:32crushed
38:33her.
38:34And now
38:35know that
38:36my friend
38:36was murdered.
38:37This means
38:38that what
38:39we've been
38:40dealing with
38:40has all
38:41been a
38:41farce.
38:43It's been
38:43staged for
38:45all of us
38:45to believe
38:46something that
38:47wasn't for
38:4817 years.
38:50Mike did
38:50not drown
38:51while hunting
38:52on Lake
38:53Seminole.
38:54They found
38:54his body
38:55at the end
38:56of a road
38:56called Gardner
38:57Road,
38:57which is
38:58north of
38:58Tallahassee.
38:59It's just
39:00a dead end
39:00into Carr
39:01Lake.
39:03The location
39:04where Mike's
39:04body is
39:05discovered
39:05is an hour
39:07from Lake
39:07Seminole
39:08and just
39:09five miles
39:10from his
39:11mother Cheryl's
39:12front door.
39:15Obviously,
39:16it wasn't a
39:17coincidence that
39:18the police
39:18found the
39:19remains.
39:20Someone had
39:20to tell
39:21them where
39:21they were.
39:23The identity
39:24of that
39:24someone is
39:26revealed in
39:262018.
39:28As part of
39:29his plea deal
39:29with prosecutors,
39:31Brian Winchester
39:32reveals his
39:32involvement in
39:33Mike's homicide
39:34on sworn
39:35confession tapes.
39:38We started
39:39having an affair
39:40October 13,
39:421997.
39:45Denise was
39:47getting worried
39:48that things
39:49were going
39:49to blow up
39:50and she
39:52was concerned
39:53about getting
39:53the divorce
39:54because of
39:55the appearances
39:55of it,
39:56but also
39:56because she
39:57was scared
39:57to lose
39:58her daughter.
39:59According to
40:00Brian,
40:00Denise's solution
40:01to avoid
40:02divorce was
40:03to kill
40:03her husband.
40:04With Mike
40:05out of the
40:06picture,
40:06it would allow
40:07Brian and Denise
40:08to be together,
40:09but that was
40:09not the only
40:10motive for
40:11the murder.
40:11according to
40:24Brian,
40:24the plan was
40:25that he would
40:25go duck hunting
40:26with Mike
40:26at Lake Seminole.
40:27Then when Mike
40:28had his waders
40:29on in the boat,
40:30Brian would push
40:31Mike into the
40:32water.
40:34She wanted
40:35in her mind
40:36a scenario
40:38where it
40:39wasn't a
40:41murderer,
40:42but it
40:42was an
40:44accident.
40:45But the
40:46problem is
40:47when Brian
40:48pushes Mike
40:49out of the
40:50boat,
40:51Mike doesn't
40:52sink in
40:52his waders
40:53and actually
40:55he's able
40:56to get
40:56his waders
40:57off and
40:59Brian
40:59panics.
41:01I didn't
41:02know what
41:02to do
41:03and I
41:06ended up
41:07shooting him.
41:11after the
41:14murder,
41:15Brian drove
41:15Mike's corpse
41:16out to the
41:17remote edge
41:18of Tallahassee
41:19onto Gardner
41:20Road.
41:22Was this an
41:23area that you
41:24frequented?
41:25I knew the area.
41:27Then Brian
41:28buries his
41:29best friend's
41:30body in a
41:31swampy hole
41:32two feet deep.
41:34He was clothed
41:36and still wearing
41:37his wedding ring.
41:45Denise,
41:45did you kill Mike?
41:47Five months
41:48after Mike's
41:49remains are
41:49found,
41:50authorities arrest
41:51his widow,
41:51Denise Williams,
41:52at her workplace
41:53and charge her
41:54with first-degree
41:55murder.
41:56Do you have
41:56anything you
41:57want to say,
41:58Cheryl?
42:00Or anything
42:01you want to say
42:02at all?
42:04According to
42:05Denise's attorney,
42:07she is innocent.
42:09She had nothing
42:10to do with
42:11the death
42:12of her husband.
42:15The news
42:16of Denise's
42:16alleged involvement
42:17in Mike's
42:18homicide has
42:19sent shockwaves
42:20through this
42:20close-knit
42:21circle of friends.
42:23Mike had a
42:24good spirit
42:25and it just
42:26flat makes me
42:27mad.
42:28This kid
42:29didn't deserve
42:30to be murdered.
42:33He was a good
42:33kid to do
42:35that and then
42:36tried to hide
42:37it.
42:37That's just
42:38wrong.
42:40Cheryl has
42:41said she is
42:41thankful that
42:42her former
42:42daughter-in-law
42:43is behind bars,
42:44but she does
42:45worry about
42:46her granddaughter.
42:48I can't imagine
42:49what it's like
42:50on Ansley.
42:54I would hope
42:55that she would
42:56learn a little
42:56bit more
42:57about her
42:57father and
42:58if she ever
42:59wants to
42:59know about him.
43:00I think until
43:11we get to the
43:12end of the
43:12story, until
43:14we have a trial
43:15and get a
43:16conviction, there's
43:17no closure with
43:18what happened.
43:19it.
43:20I don't know.
43:21I don't know.
43:21I don't know.
