00:00Well what's up everybody it's Brent Porsche from 93.3 WMMR here in Philadelphia and I'm happy to
00:05welcome back this handsome devil longtime friend of the station of course the great drummer from
00:09the band Shinedown the best band in the world Mr. Barry Kirch hello sir thanks for taking some time
00:14to speak with us today. Thanks for the nice introduction haven't been called all those
00:18nice things in a while. And that sexy beard man keeps getting longer I love it. Yeah yeah it's
00:24showing all the grays that Brent Smith gave me as well. I hear you man I'm getting them as well
00:29I'm getting them as well. So I mean great to talk to you. Obviously we're going to be talking some
00:33music here in a second but the real reason why we're talking here is because Shinedown has a
00:39brand new hot sauce. It's the Symptom Chipotle garlic sauce. I got it right here. It is freaking
00:45fantastic man. Of course you guys are teaming up with Torchbearer for this. What can you tell me
00:50about the hot sauce? It's been a labor of love. I'm a hot sauce nerd. I've got a fridge full of hot
00:54sauces. When Torchbearer approached the label and said hey are there any artists that would want to
00:58do a collaboration. They came to Shinedown and I said yeah I'm in. I'm in. So Vid who's the main
01:04guy at Torchbearer and I went back and forth for like six months with ideas. You know initially I
01:11gave him my ideas of what I would think a Shinedown sauce would be like and then he would send samples
01:16and we go back and forth back and forth because Torchbearer their sauces in general are very flavorful
01:20and it's just a really good company. From up near you guys they're a PA company. They're in a
01:25Mechanicsburg. Yeah so they're not too far from you guys. You know once we got to where we wanted
01:32to be we actually have three of them that will be coming out. This is the first of them. With the
01:37first initial sauce I wanted to make something that was flavorful and not too spicy so it was for
01:43more of the masses or maybe people that aren't into super spicy things are willing to try hot sauce
01:48but don't like spicy. This is kind of the sauce for them. It's got a little kick on the back end but
01:53it's not going to take your head off or anything like that like a lot of these sauces these days
01:57and it goes well on just about anything you know whether it's your typical tacos which you can
02:01throw it on pizza you can throw it on a cheesesteak whatever you want you know oysters one of my
02:06favorite things so yeah. Yeah. It's been fun. I love a good flavorful hot sauce. I mean I do like
02:12some spice some kick but I don't I'm not a fan of the scorched earth on your tongue because of course
02:16not only do you lose the taste of the sauce itself but you lose the taste of what you put it on in the
02:21first place but with this symptom chipotle garlic hot sauce you know perfect mix of the smoky chipotle
02:29flavor of course you got the garlic in there which I'm a huge fan of and then I think it finishes with
02:34a little bit of sweetness as well. Yeah there's some sweet and there's even a little mustard in there
02:38as well and and you know it's got a little bit of non-GMO for you fans out there canola oil
02:44that kind of helps it spread across the tongue you know that we took a lot of time and vid took a lot
02:50of time really thinking this thing out and then mouthfeel we went through different versions where
02:54it wasn't the flavor profile was kind of already there but do we want to look it a little thicker
02:58do we want or arrowroot all these kinds of things that you don't really think about when it's just a
03:02simple condiment right but we really wanted it to be something special for you know to put our name
03:09on it so it was a lot of fun to do and I think this one really hits all those notes in the next two
03:14um they're going to be completely different you know. Do you know where this falls on the Scoville
03:19scale? I don't but it's pretty low on the Scoville scale you know it's it's jalapeno based so it's
03:24pretty low um uh not saying that we won't do something maybe a little bit spicier in the future
03:30but this we definitely wanted to have it a little bit lower on the Scoville scale. Yeah so I know you had
03:35mentioned it just now but I know that you love to cook both at home and while you're on the road so
03:39this is going to be perfect to kind of bring along with you for all of your creations whether it be
03:44for the the band brothers and all the all your crewmates or whether you're at home doing your
03:47thing and I love that you guys packed a bunch I mean I'm assuming everybody that orders this hot
03:52sauce will get some of your recipes right you got the uh the oysters as you mentioned I saw the video
03:58that you posted up on your Instagram about uh you know you like to put them on the grill or you like
04:02to eat them plain you know a little little dab a little dollop of the uh symptom Chipotle garlic
04:07hot sauce and off you're going of course your traditional buffalo wings uh I like the the idea
04:12for the Bloody Mary which I think is cool put some of that in there that sounds pretty good as well
04:16uh what are some of your other favorites I I actually my one of my favorites that I like to do with just
04:20hot sauces in general I put it on my breakfast sandwiches so like a sausage I can change on like
04:25uh on like a you know English muffin or something like that and I actually did that this morning
04:29off the charts man good stuff yeah eggs any type of breakfast maybe your breakfast food like a hash
04:34or anything with hot sauce absolutely um pizza I like it on pizza I love hot sauce on pizza so it
04:40really goes on anything and you know all those recipes in your hand absolutely will be available
04:44and I wrote all those those are all my personal recipes I almost put in my uh uh chili recipe but I
04:50figured I'm going to keep that to myself because it's won some competition so I'm not ready I'm not
04:54willing to share that one yet and my wife told me I wasn't allowed to so gotcha right on man so yeah
04:59I actually yesterday um put it on a buffalo like chicken cutlet like hoagie and made like a buffalo
05:06chicken sandwich with a man banging good stuff nice good I'm glad you're enjoying it that's what it's
05:11for man so of course uh you can get the hot sauce up on shinedown's website just go to the web store
05:15there of course you can also go to torchbearer.com which is cool that I found out that they're from
05:20Mechanicsburg which is sort of a hop skip and a jump from here man pretty cool yeah yeah they're
05:24local to you guys and they make some wonderful sauces so if you get a chance I think even on
05:28their website they have a like a sample pack of I think they did a mild and a hot but it's
05:34one of the shinedown symptom sauces and then a few of theirs um they do some really great stuff and
05:38some good barbecue sauces and things of that nature as well so definitely check out torchbearer even if
05:43you don't like the idea of the shinedown sauce go check them out because they have some really good
05:47sauces any chance you guys are going to have this with you out on the road this year uh this year I'm not
05:52sure next year absolutely okay and I know you kind of touched upon a little bit but uh you have a
05:58couple more in the chamber a couple different flavors yeah we do we do we've already curated
06:02those uh I like them a lot I have them here in my fridge but uh they're a secret till they come out
06:09so I think we'll want to come out midsummer we'll want to come out early fall and then we'll have
06:12probably a like a three-pack or something like that for the holiday season or something of that
06:17nature but they're they're completely independent of each other they're all different um but we
06:22definitely want to get more of a general one out first that the masses can enjoy and then maybe a
06:27little bit get a little bit more intense with the other ones and maybe some different flavors
06:31very cool so along with the hot sauce you also have your hands in a couple different projects
06:36including uh spartan brew right you still doing doing stuff with that yeah my coffee company is doing
06:41really well um that's you know aside from shinedown one of my other focuses um and uh it's growing it's
06:49uh myself and my partner steve who's a retired army guy um decided to create this I paid my way
06:56through college by working in coffee shops that's just what I did a long time ago I'm not going to
07:01say how long but it was a long time um and uh I just enjoy coffee and you know he I remember in
07:07the early days of shinedown when you know any type of early band day uh days you're like oh I hope we
07:12can do this again for another record I hope I'm going to have a career I hope you know and luckily
07:16we have and it's been wonderful but um you know he always used to what are you going to have to fall
07:21back on kid what are you going to have to fall back on I'm like I don't know um I said I don't have
07:26a fallback this I'm all in this is it this is what I do and then he came to me one day I said how about
07:30coffee I said sure let's do coffee and it's done well you know you can go to spartanbrewers.com
07:35our spartanbrewerscoffee.com and get some uh some wonderful coffee we're in some retail stores in
07:41the Massachusetts area we're expanding into Wisconsin area um because our our warehouse is
07:47in Massachusetts where he lives so you can do the daily grind of literally the daily grind and the
07:52daily grind of packaging and shipping everything so it's based out of the Massachusetts area
07:56and uh you know it's it's a passion project and I enjoy it and uh we make some damn good coffee
08:03yeah well uh you know Pierre Robert and he's he's our coffee connoisseur here at MMR so we need to
08:09get some of that to him so we'll we'll reconvene and we'll do another zoom with you and we'll get
08:13Pierre on here and well you guys can talk coffee together I'm gonna make a note right now right on so
08:19real quick man let's talk some music I I caught you guys all all dressed up and dapper at the I
08:24Heart uh Music Awards how was that was a blast you know me personally I don't enjoy award shows
08:30initially because it's just it's a it's a shock to me I don't I'm I like to be behind my drum set
08:35not in front I'm not a front man um but it was a blast you know to be around a lot of your peers
08:39and to see old friends like Jelly Roll and and to be able to present him an award uh it was a great
08:46time and it you know it was unfortunate for those that don't know Eric wasn't there he couldn't be
08:50there because he had some family stuff he had to take care of so it was just myself Brent and Zach
08:54um we like to do things as the bands that was a little bittersweet but uh uh it was a good time
09:01it was nice to to do something because we've been off for a minute and uh get out there and press the
09:07flesh but uh hopefully next time we're performing that show and not just presenting yeah very cool
09:11uh you guys um have a bit of a different touring schedule this year this isn't one like uh congruent
09:17tour you guys are kind of bouncing around all over the place of course we got a few shows in this area
09:21you're going to be up at Bethlehem Music Fest on August the 2nd you're going to be down the shore
09:25in Atlantic City which you guys just announced last week at the Ocean Casino on August the 10th
09:29you're doing a free show to kick off Memorial Day weekend down at the Jersey Shore as well Point
09:34Pleasant Beach that's going to be on May 24th but one thing I noticed a couple of the different
09:38shows that you have coming up like the one you're going to be on the same bill as Dua Lipa
09:42and Jason Derulo and uh you know sort of a different lineup for you guys to be a part of and I'm
09:48interested as to your thoughts on that obviously you know you guys are are looking for the the
09:54crossover success as well obviously with the smash hit song symptom of being human um do you guys alter
10:00the set list at all for a crowd like that are you going to give them a little bit more of the the
10:03mellow side of shine down are you going to hit them with the diamond eyes and the cut the cord and
10:07all the in-your-face songs as well you know on that show I think we only have 30 minutes so we really
10:12have to pick and choose you know because it is it's a it's a top 40 it's a pop show um and it's a
10:17different audience you know my job and the band's job is to go in there and steal all their fans
10:21that's what we do that's what shine down does and we have to be ourselves you have to be honest we
10:25we're shine down so yeah we're gonna have to play the sound madnesses and and those types of songs
10:30but we also have to play symptom which is the song that got us onto that show um and maybe second
10:34chance and things of that nature but with the amount of wonderful songs we've had it's really
10:39hard to make a 30 minute set to be honest that's our sure yeah hey did you know that today
10:44is the fifth anniversary of night number two of the Ryman shows down in Nashville I was down there
10:50with you guys for both of them today is the fifth anniversary going back to 2019 I can't believe it's
10:55been five years yeah those were some like some of the most incredible performances just in general
11:01live shows for me but of course uh you know both nights you guys did a song completely unplugged
11:07acoustic no mics no no amplification or anything like that have you have you ever done anything like
11:11that before in a setting like that no that was the first time and I I'm trying to remember I think
11:16that it was either Brent or Zach's idea and I want to say it was Zach's idea um it was fun you know
11:23and to play such a legendary place where it has those acoustics for not being plugged in you know
11:28the Ryman's been around a long time and it was the Grand Ole Opry it's made for those kinds of
11:33intimate moments so to be able to pull that off in there for our fans it was it was amazing you know
11:38that's one of those bucket list places that you want to play and to say that we got to do it two
11:42two nights is it's pretty awesome yeah especially I know for Zach and Brent both being Tennessee kids
11:48but I'm sure it was for you and Eric as well yeah yeah I can't claim the Tennessee but it definitely
11:53you know that that city in that area have been great to us over the years I mean that's that's
11:58where we rehearse I'm actually flying there tomorrow to start setting up the rigs for these shows we have
12:03upcoming that's where all of Shinedown's gear is stored that's kind of our our home base
12:07really excellent excellent well lastly before I let you go obviously Brent posted a video
12:12up on the socials man a few weeks ago he was out on a boat somewhere and he said Shinedown 8 is coming
12:19of course the follow-up to the great album Planet Zero from a couple years ago which is going to be
12:23celebrating its second anniversary coming up here um where are you at with that what can you tell me
12:28about the next album further along than you'd think literally I was in Charleston last week with Eric
12:33at the studio uh recording drums for some songs we uh we're we're doing we've been working our butts
12:41off yeah just because it said we're not touring as much this year it doesn't mean we're not working
12:45you'll hear something I imagine by the end of the year if not beginning of next year there'll be some
12:49new Shinedown coming uh we don't want to rest we don't want to take too much time and uh some really
12:55cool stuff really cool stuff it's going to be you know it's it's going to be what Shinedown does which
13:00every record is completely different than the last one you know it still sounds like Shinedown you're
13:03never going to change Brent's voice but I can't make Leave a Whisper again I can't make Planet Zero
13:08again I can't make Sign of Madison again that was then that was that snapshot of time they all sound
13:13like Shinedown but we we definitely try to grow and evolve and do something different because at the
13:17same time uh we're artists we're musicians we want to create what we hear in our heads and and that's
13:23what we do so it's coming soon and it's going to be cool cool and Eric's on board to produce again
13:27like you did the last couple as of right now unless he pulls all his hair out
13:30very cool man well we're looking forward to that obviously we talked at the beginning of the show
13:37about the shirt we need a new line coming out you know being an election year and whatnot we need
13:41you know the rhythm section we deserve come on right yes we might need to to re-up that and put
13:46some new dates on there for sure sweet well dude I'm very happy for you pleasure catching up with
13:52you good to see you hot sauce you as well Barry uh again Shinedown's symptom chipotle garlic sauce
13:58you go to shinedown.com and get it there make sure you check out torchbearer as well of course
14:02we're very much looking forward to the uh the future flavors that we'll get here uh down the line
14:07shortly uh good luck with the uh coffee company and uh you know everything else man I'm so excited for
14:13you guys you know I'm a big fan of yours and the bands and uh always a pleasure talking to you
14:17bear and uh obviously we'll see you over the summer and don't be a stranger man come down to the station
14:22here make sure you come back and say hi to us all right absolutely and our house is always open to
14:26you as well so we look forward to seeing you this summer I appreciate that man Mr. Barry Kirch from
