00:00it is alt 1037 i'm camfield barry from shinedown is here how are you i'm great yourself i'm not
00:11too bad barry just told me that he had a quiet voice and i said wow a quiet drummer yeah it's
00:16rare no wonder things seem so harmonious in shinedown yeah i'm the grandpa i take care of
00:21everybody there is a lot to talk about there is a new album pending there's new songs coming
00:27uh we have to talk about your sources but let's start by discussing the tour so far that shinedown
00:33have been doing you've done some u.s dates i know you were back in my native uk for the download
00:38festival yes it looks like the biggest show i've seen shinedown do from the videos that i've seen
00:44so far at least in the arenas it is it's a massive massive production it's it's the biggest we've
00:49ever done you know we we pride ourselves on our live shows you know people spend a lot of money
00:53to come out and see us we want to give them the best show that we can and try to one up ourselves
00:58from whatever we did last time so it's it's massive show they're trying to kill me for sure there was
01:02some discussion that you had this idea of making it seem as if you were on five different stages but
01:07on one that's that's the scale of it right yeah that we don't want a bad seat in the house you know
01:11so it there's so many areas we can move around i mean a little less for me being the drummer but you
01:15know we do some stuff that's out in the middle of the audience we have stuff on stage it's uh
01:20you know and especially with the video screens and stuff like that it really is immersive for
01:23everybody and part of it it's so explosive that brent literally caught fire on the first week right
01:30we don't talk about that that's what happens when you don't rehearse properly oh i see yeah yeah
01:37hardest working man in show business but getting him to show up for actual rehearsal is difficult
01:41okay because he's got so you well maybe if he posted less from the gym then he could be on stage
01:46more as he considered that you know because every time i read about like oh we got new songs coming
01:51or the album's coming here and the album's coming there first of all i mean i just said everything
01:55is very harmonious in the world of shinedown i don't want to i don't want to change that but it
01:59seems to me no members of the band can agree on when the new album is actually coming because we have
02:03no idea if you want the truth we have no idea we'd like it to come out next march that's the hope
02:08that's what we're shooting for um but it's not done yet and that's the thing we'll never rush a record we
02:12don't want to put stuff out there that we're not proud of um and of course brent who is the
02:17consummate workaholic and doesn't have a home lives in hotel rooms we're constantly on the road
02:22so it's hard to record songs and make a record when you're out there touring so um you know
02:27uptown problems for sure it's not like it's a bad thing but it takes a second and in terms of the
02:31creative process of this album is it true that you you had a bunch of songs that you were pretty happy
02:36with and then i don't know which one you wrote but you wrote something and you were like wow this is a
02:41step above and it kind of changed direction and that's another reason why it's taken longer yeah
02:46because you get a collection of songs and we always write a lot of songs and then pick the best ones
02:50for a record um you know sometimes it's upwards of 30 songs we're like okay we have to pare this down
02:54to 11 12 songs and it's the same with this one but then you know we started getting a different sound
02:59not that we're changing it still sounds like shine down and we can't change brent's voice and nor
03:03would you want to but just you know different production maybe some different instrumentation
03:06you're like oh i guess we're headed this direction now so let's try this and try this and try this and
03:11it you know puts you on a different creative path which is always fun is there a set number of songs
03:16that you like to have in the can to choose from before you go all right now we've got what we need
03:21we'll we'll choose the best 10 for example out of a certain number no not necessarily it really
03:27depends on the time frame and where we are at you know i look back at all our records and it's really a
03:32time capsule of who we were at that time you know they're all true stories and just what we came up
03:36with at that moment so it could be 15 and you pare it down to 10 it could be 30 and you pare it down
03:41to 12 you know there's no rhyme or reason one of the things i've noticed from being a shinedown fan
03:45from from early on is i think there's been a wonderful maturity in the songwriting right you've
03:51always done good stuff but especially in the the lyrics and the things that you write about right
03:56there are things that uh hit home with people there's very emotional stuff there's a lot of things that
04:02you've said on you know on concept albums but when i think of something like a symptom of being
04:06human and and what that deals with and then we know 365 from the new album right i was almost uh
04:12brought to tears when i heard about what 365 is actually about in terms of the the amount of
04:16people that uh that someone lost across 12 months yeah and i i feel like you know that is a sort of a
04:23new creative peak in shinedown songwriting to be able to convey that that kind of a message and
04:30and you know and do it in three and a half minutes i think is is a great thing for the band right now
04:35it is and it blows my mind because i am not one of the main songwriters definitely not a lyricist and
04:39when these guys bring me the demo of it i get to hear this story of what we've lived through um for
04:45the first time it always just blows my mind like okay yes we are honing our craft we are growing as
04:49musicians we're getting better you know we haven't become stagnant or complacent write the same record
04:54every single time you know we we grow and you know it's it's a badge of honor to be able to to do that
04:58and be a part of a band that you know after 23 years is still growing and getting bigger and better
05:03yeah that is a very good point because when we're nearly at the 25th anniversary of shinedown
05:08to have a band that has not only kept kept getting bigger but also has reached the new peak
05:16after more than 20 years most bands don't do that right the trajectory for most bands is you go up
05:22and at a certain point you come down somewhat and then you kind of plateau and you're at that level
05:29for the rest of your career if you if you carry on doing it right you can always play state fairs and
05:33you just kind of stay there that's true and there's and there's and there's a handful of bands that i
05:38don't know make it into stadiums and they stay at stadiums but they're few and far between yes but
05:42even if you if you discount that the number of bands that get to their 20th year and or 20th ish and
05:49then suddenly take the leap that shinedown have done in the last few years i can't think of another
05:55band that's done that and that is a you know a testament to you kind of sticking to it and as you
06:00said continuing to hone your craft i think i agree with you and it's because we got we've gotten
06:04better as people you know brent's been sober for a while now we uh we still get along which is very
06:09important we actually enjoy each other's company we still ride the same bus together we still have the
06:13same dressing room you know we don't separate ourselves um and i think that really helps who we become
06:18and i think with brent getting rid of his addictions you know he's still always be an addict but he's
06:22been able to turn that addict mentality to shinedown that's all obviously he worries first and foremost
06:28about his son yeah but beyond that all he thinks about is shinedown he never he has no home he
06:33literally lives in hotel rooms and just goes okay i gotta go talk to this radio station so i'm gonna go
06:38spend a week in wherever you know it's right that's who he is it's constant work 24 7 does that mean
06:43that you're constantly getting text messages at like 3 a.m going hey i got this idea can you drum
06:48me this pattern because i think this could go good with that bit and blah blah blah blah blah and what
06:52about this for your hot sauce sometimes i get those texts but most of the time he goes oh i forgot to
06:57tell you yeah we're doing this this this and this and this oh great let me let me tell my wife that i'm
07:02going to be leaving for two months thanks brent let's talk about the uh the tour that you are
07:08currently on that is different from the shinedown tour right you're doing uh it's called uh booze
07:13brews and barbecue yes yes tell me about that well it started with i've got my friends here ty and and
07:20john they do the it's a tv show that we're creating that they do with with me um and basically it's it's
07:26a destination kind of thing we're going to different cities and filming in a brewery learning about what
07:31they're making their uh local barbecue joint kind of what they do and then we find a paranormal spot
07:36and to do a ghost hut and kind of put all those three things together as a it's a travel destination
07:40thing uh we're filming our six one actually this uh this week down in uh montgomery um and uh doing
07:48an event at a frankenbolts brewery on saturday if people want to come out to that they're more than
07:52welcome um but really it's been a fun passion project to do on the side you know shinedown is
07:57definitely my first passion and and my career but i have other interests and this kind of leans on all
08:02those between the beer i love beer barbecue and the paranormal i've always been interested
08:06i find it fascinating and the camaraderie the three of us have makes for really a fun show
08:12and then once we get about 10 in the can we'll start releasing the full episodes out there on on
08:16we haven't picked the outlet yet because there's lots of interest but we also want to have total
08:21control we're not giving up control we're not going to have them write a script for us this is
08:25unscripted i'm not going to fake anything oh look it's a demon that we're not doing that
08:29um so once we have total control then we'll release it and and get it get it out there but we have a lot
08:34of traction on social media there's a lot of clips that we've been putting out on social media that
08:37media that's been creating a lot of a lot of traction and getting a lot of hilarious comments
08:42so it's been a lot of fun to me the concept of booze brews and barbecues is good because it's not
08:47another cooking show right i mean there was another rock star that started one of those recently and i
08:52quite like him but i'm like good god haven't we got enough like watching people bake cakes on the tv
08:56like that's all over the place another cooking competition exactly like i i definitely don't
09:02need it i feel like it was all the full i can't remember her name but there was that lovely very
09:06old british lady that was on the first of those cooking shows that was on julia child's no there
09:11was a different i'm thinking of someone else but everyone was like oh she's so sweet and i'm like
09:15yeah but she's baking cakes i like i like the cake i don't i don't care about i don't care how about
09:22how the cake's made and then when it got to uh is it cake for god's sake so booze brews and barbecues
09:28is an idea of a way of you know bringing different elements you can bring all three into it it also
09:33makes for an interesting show because sometimes with like a say a paranormal show or or a show on
09:38a barbecue joint after 45 minutes it kind of gets a little stale yeah yeah yeah so if you're doing an
09:43hour-long episode or a 45 minute long episode you can split into three total different things
09:47and learn something on the way because we're going in this as idiots we're doing it because we love it
09:51and it's fun and we like history and ghost stuff and and beer so it's the three of us having a good
09:56time and it makes the show more interesting because it's entertaining throughout you know
09:59now in terms of bringing out the ghosts is it the strongest beer and the strongest sources that we
10:04talking about spice well because i've got to tell you i'm a little bit skeptical when it comes to the
10:08paranormal world right so am i okay because here's my take on it right okay i i don't see why what we
10:15know down here should be all there is so i'm open to the idea that there there may well be
10:21something else somewhere else right right but i struggle to buy into the people who will walk
10:28into rooms and go oh there's a bad aura in here and i'm being uh you know the spirit or or you know
10:35this is someone who's going to look at the palm of my hand and tell me the message that my dead nan
10:41wants to send to me and suggest that you know do you remember that time when it seemed like your
10:46favorite mug in the kitchen cupboard was turned around the other way that was your nan i struggle
10:51with all of that i struggle with that too you know i think there is something else out there there's
10:54got to be i mean there's just too many documented things that there isn't something but do we know
10:59what it is now right we have no idea because one of my friends had a great idea and maybe you can do
11:03this on the on the show right i'll steal it we've always he's always had this thing about um
11:07especially hotels that claim that they've got haunted rooms right and they'll do a thing where
11:12they'll upsell you to you pay more for the level to which the room is haunted right there's several
11:19of these around and uh he always had this idea we never did it but we always used to talk about this
11:24on the radio where you go you know one day we should do a weekend in one of these so-called haunted
11:28hotels and then on saturday night just completely trash the room and then the next day go down to the
11:33front desk and say oh it was the ghost that did it and then that's a brilliant idea and then we'll
11:37see how haunted they genuinely believe the hotel is when they give you the bill for destroying the
11:43room so this show's even better because not only is it uh completely different to a typical cooking
11:49show if you're a skeptic about ghosts and stuff like that you can see your perspective on it yeah
11:54and it's still entertaining and listen i am a rock star so if i destroy a hotel room that's just
11:58cannon fodder for the media you know it's perfect they'll be like oh you're the one that likes
12:03fear and shine down you're not the sober one uh the shine down show in the metroplex is at dickie's
12:10arena on august 28th yes and uh once again we're keeping our fingers crossed for for march for the
12:16album i'm literally crossing my fingers for people just listening to this yeah yeah we have two more
12:20songs coming out this year for you guys um that i'm excited about that we're finishing up right now
12:24finishing the mix and mastering on um that are great songs and then uh yeah next year oh the one
12:30other thing i should ask which you probably won't want to answer is is the real reason it's being held
12:34up because you're waiting for the jelly roll collaboration no but that would be fun okay i
12:39wouldn't say no to hanging out with jelly roll he's such a sweetheart and you know we've toured together
12:42before um i love that no we're not waiting for collaboration with him he's too busy anyway right now he
12:47is pretty busy uh barry thank you very much for coming in good to see you absolutely good to be seen
12:54you
