00:00All right, ladies and gentlemen, this is one of my favorite guys in country music.
00:02I feel like he has really taken us back to the traditional sound of country music.
00:08Doesn't get more real than this.
00:09East Texas country boy grew up riding bulls.
00:13He was a prison supervisor, so you know he's tough.
00:16And now he's one of the best country artists out there, ladies and gentlemen, from the Lone Star State, Cody Johnson.
00:23Cody!
00:25I was not ready for that.
00:26Well, hey, brother.
00:27That was an intro, by God.
00:28Hey, come on now.
00:30I knew you went, as I can say that, because you were playing, like, the Majestic in San Antonio.
00:34I think you played Floors one time, and now you're selling out the Houston Rodeo, man.
00:41Yeah.
00:42It's been a long, hard road, man.
00:44But, you know, if you look back and you go, I would play all those, quote-unquote, smaller venues.
00:49I would play all of them again.
00:50It was well worth it.
00:51People that don't know, like, Floors Country Store is a very iconic, I mean, Willie Nelson.
00:57Very iconic.
00:57Yeah, he used to live on the premises.
00:59Like, he had an apartment there, Kevin, and he'd pay for it by playing gigs there.
01:02That's awesome.
01:03The Majestic Theater, a lot like the Mahaffey, but older, like, very old-looking inside.
01:07And then the Houston Rodeo.
01:09I mean, if you are an artist, especially a Texas artist, and you sell that out, I mean, get a big old belt buckle, and they tell you, man, you have made it.
01:16So, congratulations, dude.
01:18I'm so pumped for you.
01:19Oh, thank you.
01:20I appreciate it.
01:21It's been, like I said, it's been a long, hard road, so it's one of those deals where every momentous occasion, like, the first time you do that.
01:27So, the first time we did Houston Rodeo, by the way, we were a call-up.
01:29We were a replacement.
01:31And so, when you're here, yeah, no pressure.
01:34Yeah, no big deal.
01:36Three days notice, you know, no pressure.
01:38But after that, man, we kept coming back.
01:40We kept doing it.
01:40This year, I think we're going to do it for our fifth, this 2023 will be our fifth year to do it.
01:46So, we're pretty excited about that.
01:48Wait, who was the cancellation?
01:49I forget.
01:51Old Dominion.
01:51Old Dominion.
01:52Well, it was kind of weird, because you're like, you know, you feel bad, like, taking somebody's slot like that, you know?
01:58And it's plugged at a death in the family, and so I really felt bad.
02:01You know, it's hard to be excited, but then once you got on stage, you're like, yes, this is my stage.
02:05This is fun.
02:06Yeah.
02:06And I promise you, and I promise you, knowing those guys, and you know those guys, too, they could probably not be happier for you, man.
02:13Absolutely.
02:13And every one of them has told us that, man.
02:15And so, you know, the rest is history, as I said.
02:18Yeah, absolutely.
02:19Talking to Cody Johnson right now.
02:21You know his song, Till You Can't.
02:23I love the fact that you are just killing it on a national level now.
02:28I try to re-describe to people the Texas country scene and how tight-knit it is and how kind of different it is,
02:33but now that other people are starting to see it and starting to hear that traditional sound again,
02:38I mean, that's got to be exciting for you and people accepting it all over the country and in the world.
02:43Oh, it's very exciting.
02:44You know, and a song like Till You Can't was so relatable.
02:47I think that, you know, no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, what you believe, what color you are,
02:54what religion you are, Till You Can't speaks to you because all of our story, it's one of those things that, you know,
03:00we're all only here for a short time and we need to make the best out of it, make the most out of it.
03:05And when that song did, it had so much success, I mean, multi-week number one and my first number one would build more charts, by the way.
03:13Let's go!
03:14Let's go, Cody!
03:16When that happened, we thought, well, what do we follow up with?
03:20What do we, how do we follow that, you know?
03:22Yeah.
03:22And so that's the reason why we chose the album title, Human.
03:26Our new single, Human, is out and it's one of those things that, again, I feel like that we are all doing,
03:31like we are all trying to learn how to be human and I thought, well, you know,
03:35if we've had success with one universal type song, let's go with the next one.
03:39Cody Johnson on the phone right now, going to be at the Yingling Center, November 18th.
03:44Cannot wait to see him there.
03:45Well, listen, I got to see you.
03:47I got to say hello.
03:47I miss the heck out of you because I haven't seen you since I moved out of Texas.
03:50So when you come November 18th at the Yingling Center, make sure you say hi.
03:54Let's hang out a little bit, all right?
03:55You bet.
03:56Sounds good.
03:56Hey, thank you guys for your time this morning.
03:58Oh, one more thing.
03:58By the way, I went on to buy tickets.
04:01It's not Ticketmaster.
04:02It's another one.
04:03And I said, Cody Johnson, November 18th, the Yingling Center, and a picture of Kevin Fowler
04:07pops up.
04:11It could have been anybody else.
04:13I know, right?
04:14And by the way, come to think of it, he's probably behind the whole thing.
04:18Yeah, I bet he is.
04:19I bet he's a problem.
04:20That's awesome, man.
04:22Well, if anybody doesn't know who Kevin Fowler is, he is a big-time Texas country artist
04:26and one of the OGs in that.
04:28Well, listen, Cody, just continue to crush it.
