Essentially going into this season, one of the two Contreras brothers probably going to go in the top five as far as catchers are concerned.
00:07
We'll get to Wilson Contreras here in just a minute because I do think he may be the most polarizing guy going into the year.
00:14
And again, as we move forward, we'll get into that.
00:16
But Cal Raleigh coming off a career season, William Contreras second, Sal Perez still good in fantasy and reality.
00:24
You have Shea Lange-Aliers, Logan Ohapi, Yiner Diaz, first year with Houston, fantastic.
00:28
Will Smith, Adley Rutschman, Stevenson, Connor Wong.
00:33
And I want to make sure I mention my guy J.T. Rimuto.
00:36
I know that he fell off a little bit last year. I don't want to completely discount him going into the season.
00:40
So, George, a number of directions you could go here.
00:44
And I guess we could kind of, you know, we probably should just open it up to ask.
00:47
Let me ask you the question here is how much of this eligibility question with Wilson Contreras are you buying into?
00:53
He's going pretty high in a lot of fantasy drafts because he's moving from catcher to first base.
00:58
He's going to be a first baseman this year or DH, whatever they decide to do with him.
01:02
And this is the final year that he'll have catcher eligibility.
01:05
And I think because of that, he's jumped up a lot in draft.
01:09
Yeah, I agree, because we think he's going to play more games, right?
01:12
Most cats get one game off a week.
01:14
There's 26 weeks in a baseball season.
01:16
You do your quick math here.
01:17
At most, he's playing 136.
01:19
All right.
01:20
Now we think Contreras could play more.
01:22
All right.
01:23
And he plays in a really good hitter's ballpark there.
01:25
So I get it.
01:26
I get it why he's bouncing up.
01:27
Listen, I don't think he's a superstar.
01:29
But as a catcher, yeah, you know, he could be extremely valuable.
01:33
So I get it, you know, where you want to get them higher.
01:37
Now, as a catcher, I think you and I are aligned here.
01:40
I generally wait.
01:41
They all – it's one of the toughest positions in sports to play.
01:46
I mean, not only are you crouching a million times.
01:49
I mean, you're crouching a million times during the heat of summer.
01:52
You're wearing all that equipment.
01:53
You're getting hit with foul balls.
01:55
You're getting hit with bats.
01:56
Runners are – I know they try to eliminate that, but runners going on.
01:59
I mean, it's a brutal, brutal position.
02:01
You're always getting nicked up somewhere.
02:03
So that's why the offense generally deteriorates as the season goes on here.
02:07
So I wait.
02:09
I generally wait on a catcher unless, you know, someone falls.
02:11
Like, oh, I can't believe he's still available on round seven.
02:14
Then maybe I take one.
02:15
But usually it's double digits for me, correct?
02:17
I think, you know, I make fun of – well, not fun.
02:20
I hate two-catcher leagues.
02:21
I really don't think it should be.
02:22
But I can find 12 catchers I can live with.
02:25
Francisco Alvarez on the Mets is on this list here.
02:27
He's ranked 12th.
02:29
And I'm okay.
02:30
Del Muto is 14th.
02:31
Logan O'Hope is 15th.
02:32
I'm okay with any of those.
02:33
Austin Wells, I can live with what they can do.
02:36
So I'm probably waiting on a catcher forever rather than spend a top pick on,
02:40
you know, on Gutierrez, on Roachman, Will Smith, whoever it might be there.
02:44
I'm going to wait a while here because I'm okay, you know,
02:47
taking a catcher around 12, 13 that's going to hit me 25 home runs.
02:50
It might hurt an average, you know, so I might have to –
02:53
if you're playing in a categories league,
02:54
that might be something I have to pick up because I'm waiting here.
02:57
But I'm likely waiting in catchers.
02:59
Do you think – look, Roachman was really good.
03:02
He made 19 home runs, almost 80 runs driven in.
03:06
Is there a thought process that Roachman is a next-step kind of guy,
03:11
like there's more in there?
03:12
There's 30 home runs as a catcher.
03:15
There's 90 runs driven in.
03:17
Is that the ceiling for him?
03:19
I still feel like there's more there.
03:23
He didn't do as well last year as was expected, right,
03:26
especially with Gunnar Hennesen tearing it up in front of him.
03:28
People thought he was going to have a much better season there.
03:31
I think there is more, yeah.
03:33
But another thing to keep in mind, once again, this goes more to dynasty leagues.
03:36
One of the Baltimore's top prospects, another catcher.
03:40
So Roachman could be another guy who sees himself being more of a first baseman
03:44
in the future.
03:45
This is something to keep in mind.
03:46
It's not going to affect this season and probably not next season as far as
03:49
catcher eligibility either.
03:51
So it's more down the road here.
03:52
But I think there is more to expect from Roachman.
03:55
The problem is he's not going to drop because of it.
03:58
He's still going to be a top three, top four catcher.
04:00
He's probably going in single-digit rounds here.
04:02
So you're not going to get a bargain for him.
04:04
So I would like – because I do think he rebounded somewhat this year,
04:07
but the price is going to be too high for me.
