Manchester’s transport update

Here is everything that you need to know about the transport news in Manchester this week.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World and your transport update for this week.

00:03We actually have a lot of stories, so we'll jump right into it.

00:06Firstly, Stockport's viaduct is set to be restored for a cost of around £1 million.

00:10The viaduct was opened in 1840 and carries around 400 trains a day,

00:14so as a result, it's high time the structure got a little bit of love.

00:17Network Rail have already started removing vegetation, graffiti,

00:20and repairing bricks that have long stood the test of time.

00:23While the project is already well underway,

00:25this next stage will come with some inconvenience for those who frequent the M60,

00:28which will be closed in both directions between Junction 1 and Junction 27

00:32every night between Monday 17 February and Sunday 2 March.

00:36The restoration will leave the viaduct looking immeasurably improved,

00:39as well as significantly reducing the risk of damage caused by overgrown plants.

00:43Next up, Manchester Airport's been caught in the crosshairs of Manchester's prolific transport

00:47bosses, who are targeting improved public transport to the airport

00:50in an attempt to reduce the amount of car journeys made.

00:53According to Hazel Grove MP Lisa Smart, 30 million people use the airport each year,

00:57with 84% of journeys to and from the area being made via car.

01:00Plans include a flagship station at Manchester Airport,

01:03with a close eye on the possibility of introducing new tram and tram train services

01:07that make the journeys easier and more convenient.

01:09Speaking of the Metrolink, a quick reminder that no trams will be running

01:12between Media City and Eccles until the 25th of February.

01:15But while we're talking about fuss,

01:16Manchester Piccadilly is well known for causing a bit of fuss when it comes to travel plans.

01:20Research by Tank looked at journey data from 660 routes and 50 stations in the UK

01:25to reveal that Manchester Piccadilly is the second worst station in the UK

01:29when it comes to delays and cancellations.

01:3124% of services were five minutes late or more, with 8% being completely cancelled.

01:36The only station worse was London's King Cross,

01:38which had an extra 2% of delayed trains, but two less in terms of cancelled services.

01:43Finally, Frederick Road in Salford will be shot between Lissadale Street and Leslie Howe Way

01:47from today until the 2nd of March, as part of plans that will see Salford's city centre transformed.

01:52A diversion has been set up, so make sure to Google your route before setting off

01:56to avoid yourself from getting caught out.
