00:00Hi, I'm Hallie Alton, food and drink writer for National World, and I'm an absolute lover of

00:05steaks. I think I've tried steaks from every single UK supermarket, but my favourite has to be Aldi.

00:14Their steaks are absolutely unbelievable, from their own range to the Ashfields range,

00:20all of them I find absolutely delicious. So when I found out that Aldi were releasing a first of

00:26its kind steak range, the first thing I had to do was run to the shops, grab a steak, bring it home

00:32and cook it and give it a try. The brand new range is 40 day aged Aberdeen Angus steaks,

00:39which are available in rump, sirloin and ribeye. Ribeye is my absolute favourite cut of steak,

00:46so that is the one that I picked up. In the range, ribeye is the most expensive, however,

00:51all of these steaks are incredibly affordable. A rump is £4.49, sirloin is £5.69 and ribeye is £5.79

01:00and all of them are 227 grams, so you still get quite a lot for your money. So yes, I was

01:05incredibly excited to try this range for myself, and here is what I thought. I will say that I'm

01:13really, really critical of steak. I know what I like and I know what I don't, and what I like

01:19is a rare steak. I want the inside of that steak to be pink, purple in colour, which I know isn't

01:25to everybody's taste, but that's my preference. I like it to be very, very juicy, easy to cut into,

01:32not chewy at all and certainly not overcooked. While of course this is down to the person who

01:38is actually going to be frying the steak, it is also down to the quality of the steaks,

01:42in my opinion, as I found that cooking it the same way but using a different steak each time

01:48does make a huge difference in flavour and texture. When I sat down to eat the brand new

01:5340-day range from Aldi, I was left with a kind of mixed opinion. As Aldi's other steaks, it was

02:00absolutely gorgeous, there's no doubt about that, and it had plenty of flavour, but it was the texture

02:06that I was left a little bit disappointed with. As I said, I like juicy steaks, which this certainly

02:12was, however I did find it quite difficult to cut into. I also found that when I was eating it, it

02:17was kind of chewy, which again is not something that I really like in a steak, but at the same

02:23time, it did have that juicy tenderness in the centre, which is what I look for the most. I try

02:28to cook my steak as rare as possible, but I think for this steak in particular, the 40-day aged

02:34Aberdeen Angus steaks, I think I would cook it even less time to hopefully reduce that chewiness.

02:41That said, although I was a little bit more disappointed than usual, and I don't think it's

02:46as good as it's Ashfield's steaks personally, they are still my absolute top favourite. I do think it

02:53was a fantastic steak, very delicious, bursting with flavour, and again, I tried the ribeye, I might

02:59feel differently about the rump or the sirloin, and most of all, it is always down to personal

03:04preference, especially when it comes to steaks. However, I will say I would probably give it a

03:097 out of 10, definitely on the higher end of the steaks of the UK supermarkets, but not an absolute

03:16favourite. For me personally, down to chewiness, and that it wasn't easy to cut into. That's just my

03:22opinion, head to Aldi yourself, give it a try, and let us know what you think!
