Every month of November, we celebrate National Environmental Awareness Month
00:05
to make sure that we are aware of the importance of taking care of our environment.
00:10
And now, we are going to discuss the profound impact of health and safety
00:14
and how it affects our daily lives.
00:17
We will be joined by the Technical Officer of the World Health Organization Philippines,
00:22
Engineer Bonny Magtibay.
00:24
Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine, Philippines.
00:27
Good morning, sir.
00:29
Good morning to all of our viewers of your popular program, Rise and Shine.
00:35
Yes, sir.
00:38
Sir, what is the purpose of National Environmental Awareness Month and why is it important to our country?
00:47
National Environmental Awareness Month is based on the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008
00:54
or Public Act 9512.
00:57
This act gave the mandate to various government agencies
01:02
to promote environmental awareness
01:04
such as DEPEDS, TED, TESDA, DNR, DOST, DSWD, and other agencies that can help.
01:11
Environmental awareness is important.
01:13
We call it environmental awareness
01:16
so that we can understand the duties of these parts of the environment in our lives
01:21
and we will know what we can do to take care of the environment
01:25
so that it will not be pervasive in our daily lives.
01:28
Environmental awareness month will also provide an opportunity for us to avoid the pollution of the environment.
01:35
Let's mention some examples.
01:37
For example, air.
01:39
We cannot live without it.
01:41
Water and food from nature are also like that.
01:45
In fact, what I mentioned is true that it is a part of our bodies.
01:50
If we throw those away from our daily activities,
01:54
the pollutants will enter our bodies
01:57
and become a source of diseases, feelings, or deaths.
02:01
Maybe every month of November, there will be an event about environmental awareness.
02:06
In our daily activities, we should see these events.
02:11
We should always practice environmental protection
02:15
so that our daily activities will be normal.
02:18
Alright.
02:19
From your point of view, Engineer,
02:21
how does nature and the environment affect the well-being of Filipinos?
02:25
And what are the main issues that we are facing right now?
02:29
Especially now that innovation and technology are fast.
02:33
So, what are the issues that we are facing?
02:36
Okay.
02:37
Like what I said earlier,
02:39
microbes and chemicals can enter our bodies.
02:43
What else goes into the air, land, and water?
02:47
In 2016, the WHO stated that
02:50
the number one cause of premature deaths due to environmental factors is stroke.
02:56
Stroke risk factors are not only food and tobacco.
03:01
We also call it PM 2.5 or particulate matter.
03:05
The size of that small pollutant is 2.5 microns.
03:09
It is so small that it enters our nose,
03:13
lungs,
03:15
heart,
03:16
and brain.
03:17
Because of the travel of that pollutant,
03:20
it can enter the roots
03:22
and cause stroke.
03:24
Where does that PM 2.5 come from?
03:27
It can come from cars,
03:30
factories,
03:33
and industries.
03:34
Even when we cook at home,
03:36
especially when we use wood or wool,
03:39
when we cook barbecue,
03:41
it is also dangerous.
03:42
That is why we should pay attention to the origins of that PM 2.5.
03:47
We should find a way to eliminate it
03:50
so that we won't get sick from the cold wind
03:53
that causes death.
03:56
The next thing we should pay attention to is number 6
03:58
on our list of top 10 cause of deaths
04:01
due to environmental factors,
04:03
which are diarrheal diseases.
04:05
This is caused by bacteria or viruses
04:08
that spread around us.
04:10
If we don't have toilets,
04:13
and we don't have a system in the trash,
04:15
the bacteria will spread
04:17
because of their presence,
04:19
and they will go to the drinking water or food.
04:22
To avoid this,
04:24
every house should have its own toilet.
04:26
And our drinking water or food
04:29
should be clean and safe.
04:31
The trash should be in the right place
04:33
and there should be a regular collection
04:35
and it should be properly disposed of.
04:37
These are the good things we should do.
04:39
Your engineer, Joshua, is right.
04:41
There are studies that I read
04:43
that there are contaminated plastics
04:45
in people's blood vessels.
04:47
Those are microplastics
04:50
that can be seen
04:53
through a strong microscope.
04:57
This is dangerous to the health of people.
04:59
What are the concrete steps
05:02
or projects that are being done
05:05
by the World Health Organization Philippines
05:07
to improve the health of the people?
05:12
The goal of the World Health Organization,
05:15
especially here in the Philippines,
05:17
is to provide technical support
05:19
or technical assistance
05:21
to health agencies,
05:23
especially the Department of Health
05:25
and other government agencies.
05:27
Because of this,
05:29
we helped the Department of Health
05:31
and the Ministry of Health
05:33
regarding the Environmental Health Program.
05:35
We have already done many things
05:37
such as the creation of planning tools,
05:39
the National Environmental Health Action Plan,
05:41
the Climate Change and Health Roadmap,
05:43
and the Water and Sanitation
05:45
for Healthcare Facilities Roadmap.
05:47
We also helped
05:49
to make policies
05:51
or guidelines
05:53
for water and sanitation safety planning
05:55
and for water supply providers,
05:57
such as
05:59
Water and Sanitation for Healthcare Facilities.
06:01
We are also revising
06:03
the Sanitation Code of the Philippines.
06:05
It has been passed since 1975.
06:07
I hope the Senate and Congress
06:09
will approve it soon
06:11
so that we can update
06:13
the sanitation rate in our country.
06:15
We also help when there is an emergency.
06:17
We also have a wash assistant.
06:19
Also, the most important thing
06:21
is the National Standards
06:23
for Drinking Water.
06:25
The World Health Organization helps
06:27
so that we can update it
06:29
so that the pollutants in the environment
06:31
can be cleaned without drinking.
06:33
There are also other things,
06:35
such as the Water and Sanitation
06:37
for Healthcare Facilities
06:39
and the greening of hospitals
06:41
so that the storm
06:43
won't be easily destroyed
06:45
and if it rains,
06:47
they can do something about it.
06:49
Our Department of Health
06:51
has guidelines that were helped by WHO.
06:53
We also helped
06:55
some healthcare facilities
06:57
to have solar energy
06:59
so that if someone is pregnant,
07:01
they can have electricity
07:03
and use flashlights.
07:05
But now that they have solar energy,
07:07
they can provide
07:09
health services
07:11
continuously without any
07:13
disruption.
07:15
We have helped
07:17
a lot of our countrymen.
07:19
What you are doing is very good,
07:21
especially you, Audrey.
07:23
We are really going through a storm.
07:25
The World Health Organization
07:27
is helping
07:29
Water Sanitation Facilities.
07:31
That's good.
07:33
Engineer, please send a message
07:35
to the public,
07:37
National Environmental Awareness Month.
07:39
Yes.
07:41
A lot of pollutants
07:43
are affected by our pollution.
07:45
That pollution can come
07:47
from garbage,
07:49
car smoke, and toilet flushing.
07:51
Climate change is
07:53
a result of pollution
07:55
such as a strong storm,
07:57
extreme heat, or heavy rains and floods.
07:59
What can we do
08:01
as citizens?
08:03
Let's clean the garbage.
08:05
Let's avoid using
08:07
single-use plastics.
08:09
It pollutes and goes to
08:11
rivers and seas that can
08:13
pollute the fish that live there.
08:15
If we can't avoid
08:17
using plastics,
08:19
let's learn how to
08:21
reuse it.
08:23
Let's recycle it
08:25
so that it won't spread
08:27
around us.
08:29
If garbage is polluted,
08:31
let's practice composting
08:33
such as dry leaves,
08:35
food waste. Let's use
08:37
composting technology.
08:39
I also want to promote
08:41
community gardening.
08:43
We used to have a green revolution.
08:45
Let's bring it back
08:47
so that the compost
08:49
that I mentioned earlier
08:51
can be used for vegetables,
08:53
trees,
08:55
medicinal plants,
08:57
and other plants that we can use.
08:59
That will happen
09:01
if we manage
09:03
our garbage.
09:05
What should we do about
09:07
polluted air?
09:09
Let's reduce the use of
09:11
gasoline and diesel.
09:13
Almost 70% of the
09:15
air pollution is caused by
09:17
our environment.
09:19
We can use e-trikes
09:21
and electronic vehicles
09:23
so that there will be
09:25
no pollution from cars.
09:27
We can also do carpooling.
09:29
Others are practicing it.
09:31
Or we can use bicycles
09:33
so that there will be no pollution.
09:35
Let's plant a lot of trees
09:37
and plants that can absorb
09:39
carbon emissions and other
09:41
air pollutants.
09:43
Let's support the
09:45
DOH and
09:47
local government units
09:49
so that there will be
09:51
zero-authentication.
09:53
Every house should have a toilet.
09:55
The government,
09:57
NGOs, and civic groups
09:59
can help with this.
10:01
Let's do these things
10:03
and help our environment
10:05
so that it won't be polluted.
10:07
As I mentioned earlier,
10:09
the environment is
10:11
a part of our body.
10:13
We should remember that
10:15
pollution is a part of our body.
10:17
Pollution is also
10:19
a part of our health.
10:21
We should protect
10:23
the environment
10:25
to avoid diseases
10:27
that lead to death.
