Horsing has made his return the other night for the Celtics and what already looked like
00:06
an NBA championship caliber team showed off a whole nother gear.
00:12
Justin Turpin from WEEI.com, Turp joining us here on Jones and Keefe for his weekly
00:17
appearance.
00:18
First of all, Turp, how we doing?
00:19
Happy Thanksgiving.
00:20
Happy Thanksgiving, guys.
00:21
What people want to know is were you able to get out of that speeding ticket?
00:25
Oh, people do want to know that, actually.
00:26
Damn right I was.
00:27
We were getting a lot of texts about that earlier in the week.
00:30
No, it wasn't a speeding ticket.
00:31
What was it?
00:32
It was an improper lane change.
00:34
But we are free now.
00:35
We are off the hook.
00:36
Nice.
00:37
How about that?
00:38
Free man.
00:39
Innocent.
00:40
What a feeling.
00:41
Feels like you have some free money now.
00:42
Because you probably had to put some aside thinking, like, what if I get...
00:43
Now it's going to the Bozo.
00:44
That's where it's going.
00:45
Oh, I like that.
00:46
Directly to the Bozo TD.
00:47
You represented yourself.
00:48
You defended yourself.
00:49
You didn't know...
00:50
Confident individual.
00:51
I did it myself.
00:52
Shirt and tie?
00:53
I did.
00:54
I threw on a tie.
00:55
Small business, Turp.
00:57
White House Turp.
00:58
Yeah, White House Turp.
00:59
Well, that was a suit.
01:00
That was suited and booted.
01:01
Full suit.
01:02
Yeah.
01:03
Man.
01:04
That cleans up nice.
01:05
I'd see him in not a suit and I'd say, you know what?
01:06
Throw the book in.
01:07
You're coming with us.
01:08
Yeah.
01:09
You're coming.
01:10
And you do not have the rights to an attorney.
01:12
So poor Zingas comes back the other day.
01:16
You look pretty good.
01:17
Where do you think the Celtics have missed him the most?
01:19
Definitely on their rim protection.
01:21
That's been one of the biggest issues for them is the points in the paint for opponents.
01:25
You look at it, they had 11 blocks in this first game back.
01:27
They hadn't had a double-digit block game all season before then.
01:31
Why do you think that turned into like a team-wide thing?
01:32
Because he only had two, I think.
01:33
It's more so just having him back there that they're allowed to play a little bit more
01:37
aggressively and they can also play different coverages because of his versatility, which
01:40
is just huge for them.
01:41
So you saw him make an impact there right away.
01:44
And I know Clippers obviously had, I think it was still like 54 points in the paint,
01:49
which isn't great, but a lot of that was from Zubac.
01:51
So that's going to happen.
01:52
He definitely shard that up an area that they really needed help in.
01:55
You know, we were talking about this, how Brad Stevens was on the broadcast and you
01:58
could tell he was annoyed every time they gave up a layup.
02:00
But my kind of theory is Mazzullo's probably good with it.
02:04
Like doesn't want dunks and like super easy points, but every time the opponent takes
02:08
a two, I feel like Mazzullo thinks that's a win.
02:11
Yeah, it depends on the type of two it is.
02:12
Like some of them, they're willing to let opponents take.
02:15
They're really analytical in that sense of who they're allowing, who they're willing
02:19
to let take certain shots and whatnot.
02:21
And I am with you because they like to take, if you want to play the two for three game,
02:25
it's all about the Celtics and look at, they hit 15 threes in the first half and 12 in
02:31
the second quarter alone on Monday.
02:34
So if you're, you're not going to beat them by scoring twos, if they're shooting lights
02:37
out like that.
02:38
For our listeners who are unaware, Terps Young, how old are you Terp?
02:41
22.
02:42
22.
02:43
You just called it a math game.
02:44
Do you number crunchers?
02:46
Yeah.
02:47
Do you like the style of basketball, the modern day basketball?
02:52
Do you enjoy that?
02:53
Or are you just like, that's just basketball because you're so young?
02:54
I do because I find it so fascinating the way the Celtics do it.
02:58
When you have a guy like Porzingis and like everyone says the three point shots, the Celtics
03:02
are taking a ruining the NBA, which I just can't disagree more.
03:05
I think it's actually very entertaining in all of the top eight for the Celtics.
03:09
That's Hauser, Pritchard, uh, Cornette, I'm not shooting, not going to have Tatum, Brown,
03:14
White, Holiday, Pritchard, Hauser, Horford, and Porzingis.
03:17
All of them are league average three point shooters or better.
03:19
So it's their ability to space the floor and then you have to pick between who you're going
03:24
to let shoot an open three.
03:25
It's just fascinating the mind games that they play with other teams.
03:29
I really do enjoy it.
03:30
Are you worried at all?
03:31
The NBA is going the way of baseball where now it's overanalyzed and there's too much
03:35
emphasis on, cause like we all like home runs and baseball, but when everybody's swinging
03:39
for a home run, you get a lot of, you know, guys who can't do it, guys who are striking
03:45
out.
03:46
It gets reduced to a game that becomes less watchable.
03:49
We all like points.
03:50
We all like home runs, but we also don't like what happened with baseball.
03:53
Are you worried about that at all with the direction of the NBA?
03:56
I'm not because it really starts in the defensive end for the Celtics, right?
03:59
So a lot of the, back then they always wanted to see defense like you guys love defense
04:03
probably.
04:04
Like that's what they, not true.
04:07
I really don't.
04:08
Yeah.
04:09
But that they start with the defensive end.
04:10
So I'm not really worried about that.
04:11
And they can score in different ways and going back to Porzingis, like look at in the third
04:15
quarter, obviously it didn't really matter cause they had a huge lead, but the Clippers
04:18
were on a 13 to two run when the Celtics needed to snap that run because their shots weren't
04:22
falling.
04:23
They went to Porzingis right in the post.
04:24
He shot over hard in the first time for two and then got followed on the very next possession.
04:28
And just like that, the offense was leveled out again.
04:30
So they have different avenues to score.
04:32
It's not all just three point shots and granted a lot of it is, but it's not all three point
04:37
shooting.
04:38
All right.
04:39
Wild hypothetical.
04:40
If the Celtics had prime Shaquille O'Neal, do you think Joe Missoula would teach him
04:46
to shoot threes and want him to shoot threes or would he be okay with him just stuffing
04:50
guys down in the paint?
04:51
I think he'd be okay with them stuffing guys in the paint.
04:54
Cause I feel like he'd be like, Hey Shaq at practice, why don't you step out here and
04:57
see?
04:58
Oh, they would definitely shoot him in practice.
04:59
They would.
05:00
A hundred percent.
05:01
I don't know if they wouldn't the game.
05:02
Cause guys like Cornette doesn't shoot him in the game, but he'll shoot them in practice.
05:05
Why does Cornette not shoot three because he used to do it before he got here.
05:08
He's like the opposite.
05:09
Most guys maybe don't, and then they have to hear.
05:12
He doesn't hear the polar opposite of Al Horford who developed a three point shot.
05:16
Luke Cornette almost like lost his, he just doesn't take them anymore.
05:19
He's very capable of it.
05:21
Did they have time Lord shooting threes when he was here?
05:23
They were working on it right before they traded.
05:24
Remember the videos?
05:25
No, no, no.
05:26
Yeah.
05:27
No, definitely not.
05:28
They were, they were, they were clips of him.
05:29
I do vaguely remember that.
05:30
Yeah.
05:31
Doing like corner threes and stuff.
05:32
Doesn't that kind of answer your question?
05:33
Yeah, I guess.
05:34
But he wasn't as dominant as score.
05:35
No, no.
05:36
I mean, for sure.
05:37
I mean, he's not Shaq, but just like a player like that.
05:40
They're going to try to get him to turn into a guy who can stick corner threes.
05:42
He made his first career three, like two weeks ago.
05:44
Lord did?
05:45
Time Lord.
05:46
Yeah.
05:47
In the corner.
05:48
The Lord?
05:49
Yeah.
05:50
The Lord did.
05:51
What do you think the plan is for Porzingis?
05:52
He played 23 minutes.
05:53
Obviously they won that game in a massive blowout.
05:55
Is he going to sit back to backs?
05:56
Is he going to have any kind of minutes or what do you think the plan is?
05:59
He kind of alluded to it the other day that he was going to sit on back to backs.
06:02
It's going to kind of be similar to what it was last year, but he said there's no crazy
06:05
restrictions to what he's on now, but there's definitely going to be some sort of minute
06:08
restrictions because you don't go from five months of recovery to just a full go.
06:12
Like this is still the part of him ramping up.
06:15
Like that's when he went to the G League scrimmage.
06:17
They said he was part of ramping up his rehab and he's still in that process even though
06:20
he's back on the court.
06:22
So there's going to be some sort of minute restrictions and same like with guys like
06:25
Al Horford and Drew Holiday.
06:26
They're trying to lower their minutes when possible.
06:28
It's going to be the same thing with Porzingis.
06:30
Do they need Porzingis to repeat?
06:32
They didn't need him last year.
06:33
Do they need him to do it this year?
06:34
I do think they need him to do it.
06:36
They need him.
06:37
Yes, I do.
06:39
He has a season ending injury in February.
06:40
You're going to come in and say the Celtics can no longer win.
06:42
I wouldn't say they can no longer win, but it would significantly change how I feel about
06:46
it.
06:47
Like look at how competitive their games have been this year.
06:49
They really haven't been in another point differential still over 10, but it feels like
06:53
they've been in a lot of these win ugly games.
06:55
It's been a staple of this team.
06:56
And then you get Kristaps Porzingis back and it's no coincidence that they have their biggest
07:01
win of the season with 32 points.
07:03
Like that's no coincidence.
07:04
So yeah, they're going to need him more so because of the physicality teams are playing
07:08
them a little bit differently and it's just so hard to repeat.
07:10
So if you have a guy like that who Jason Tatum literally called a cheat code, you know, it
07:15
goes a long way.
07:16
They got the Bulls tonight.
07:17
Then they got the Cavs in Cleveland on Sunday, which should be a good one.
07:20
I'm sure Cleveland's got that one circled like a mini little revenge game.
07:24
Just like a what?
07:25
Two weeks after they played in the first time.
07:26
Yeah.
07:27
And that's a good one for the Celtics as well because you're not going to really see a lot
07:30
of top tier talent in the Eastern Conference right now.
07:32
We're not really seeing a lot of it.
07:34
So you get a team like Cleveland that you can kind of see how your whole squad matches
07:39
up against like assuming they're healthy going into that no back-to-back because they'll
07:42
have a day off Saturday.
07:43
So assuming you have your top six, which we haven't seen this year, it's a good test for
07:48
the Celtics.
07:49
Okay, check out his work Justin Turpin wei.com.
