00:00
Hello, a case of sunny spells and more early April showers across the country today.
00:06
But out in the Atlantic, things are brewing.
00:09
This little swirl of cloud is an intensifying area of low pressure.
00:13
This has been named Storm Matisse by the French Weather Service because they will see the
00:18
strongest winds from the system.
00:19
However, it is heading towards southern parts of the UK and will bring us some gusty conditions
00:25
overnight and into Friday morning.
00:27
More on that in a moment.
00:29
Before it arrives, as I say, through the rest of today, there's a case of sunshine
00:32
and showers, broadly speaking.
00:34
I've seen quite a lot of cloud across parts of the east that is starting to pull away.
00:37
So generally a brighter day than yesterday, a better chance of seeing some sunshine.
00:41
But a line of showers from southwestern areas extending up towards the southeast will keep
00:45
things quite wet here.
00:47
And as we go through the afternoon, some heavier showers likely to break out over parts of
00:51
the Midlands and eastern England.
00:53
But not everywhere seeing the showers, there will be some sunny spells and it is pretty
00:56
mild with temperatures in eastern England getting to 17 degrees.
01:01
And generally we are in the teens in most places.
01:04
The breeze making it feel a little cooler than that.
01:06
And speaking of the breeze, it will turn into quite a gusty winds through this evening and
01:12
overnight as that low pressure system approaches, bringing wet and very windy weather up from
01:17
the south.
01:18
The rain spreading up towards the Midlands, right across Wales and those gusty winds,
01:22
particularly around the coasts of South Wales and the coasts of southern England also, could
01:27
reach 50, 60 miles an hour, perhaps in exposed places 70 miles an hour.
01:32
So those kind of gusts could cause some travel disruptions, some delays to the ferries, that
01:37
kind of thing.
01:38
So a blustery night and a very windy start to Friday.
01:41
With all the wet and windy weather in the south, a pretty mild night here.
01:44
Whereas further north, the winds will be light.
01:46
We'll see some clearer skies across Scotland, which will allow temperatures to maybe dip
01:49
close to freezing in one or two places.
01:52
So quite a contrast on Friday morning.
01:54
We'll see some sunny spells in western Scotland, but a chilly start.
01:58
Whereas further south, it'll be mild, but it will be wet and in places windy.
02:01
Now, the strongest winds will be along the coast, say the coast of southern England and
02:06
south Wales.
02:07
You don't have to head too far inland before the winds will be fairly light.
02:10
But the wet and windy weather affecting some of the major routes, the M3, the M2, not very
02:15
pleasant first thing in the morning.
02:16
But it all tends to ease away a little bit as we go through the day.
02:21
What may linger is the rain, though, in southwestern parts.
02:24
So again, that is a cause for concern.
02:26
A yellow warning in place for that rain lingering here.
02:30
Heavy showers will keep going right across southern England, south Wales.
02:33
Further north, generally a drier day.
02:35
But even here, some showers are possible across parts of Scotland.
02:39
And one thing we'll notice is the wind starting to come in from the east.
02:42
So some of these eastern coasts could be pretty drab and dull with a lot of mist and low cloud
02:46
It'll be northwest England, northern Ireland, western Scotland, which see any decent spells
02:51
of sunshine.
02:52
A cooler feeling day as well, particularly with that easterly wind on the North Sea coast
02:57
temperatures struggling to reach double digits elsewhere will stumble up into the teens.
03:01
But it will feel colder with the wet and windy weather across the south.
03:06
That will continue through the evening and particularly across parts of south Wales,
03:10
southwest England.
03:11
That rain likely to linger into the weekend.
03:13
This area of rain may also continue to affect northern Ireland.
03:17
It's an old weather front, likely to still be providing some outbreaks of rain in the
03:21
west during Saturday.
03:23
But as we go through the weekend, high pressure topples in that low clears away and things
03:28
should be turning drier, certainly many of us looking dry by the time we get to Sunday.
03:33
It'll be a little bit colder, however, and we will have at times that easterly wind bringing
03:38
mist and low cloud and a chilly feel to some eastern coasts, but generally turning a little
03:42
drier and brighter as we go through the weekend.
