Educationists have questioned the need for a three-month intervention program to help
00:06
year one pupils with reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
00:11
I, Lord Asami, told FMT that it may be too premature to conclude that these students
00:15
are weak in those skills.
00:18
Lord Asami was responding to Education Director General Azman Adnan, who said a total of 122,062
00:25
year one pupils have been identified as needing intervention in 3R skills.
00:30
He said of the 448,113 children who are in year one this year, 62,928 have not yet mastered
00:38
both reading and arithmetic.
00:42
Educational sociologist Anwar Ahmad also questioned the need for the program, pointing out that
00:46
the first year of primary school is intended for children to learn 3R skills.
00:51
He also raised doubts on the use of terms left behind and intervention by education
00:56
ministry officials.
00:58
Anwar explained that by international standards, a child can only be left behind in literacy
01:03
and numeracy skills once they are 10 years old and above.
