00:00The education ministry has launched an internal investigation after an audio clip in which

00:07a teacher allegedly admitted to telling a secondary school student to go back to China

00:12for struggling with the Malay language went viral.

00:16The ministry said it does not tolerate any form of racial statements or actions within

00:20the education ecosystem.

00:23The ministry also said a meeting with the parents of the students involved has been

00:27scheduled and that psychosocial support services have been made available.

00:33It stressed that government educational institutions must be safe, inclusive and respectful of

00:38the diverse racial, religious and cultural backgrounds of students.

00:44In the audio clip, the teacher was allegedly asked on the phone by a man claiming to be

00:48a relative of the student to confirm if she had told the student to go back to China.

00:54She admitted to doing so.

00:56The teacher also allegedly called the student stupid and told the student to sit near the

01:00rubbish bin.

01:02The teacher allegedly said this was not the first time she had spoken to a student in

01:06this manner and that there had been no complaints against her for doing so in the past.
