00:00This old house had a crusty, dusty kitchen, so we were making it bigger by knocking down this wall.

00:03We've removed the cabinets and the plaster, now it's time to remove the studs.

00:06And hopefully, we can do that without the house falling down.

00:07Knock on wood.

00:08Pun intended.

00:09But before we can get this party started, we have to remove the old pipes that are in our way.

00:12And when I say we, I mean my

00:13DAD!

00:14Cause I don't know what I'm doing yet.

00:15And grinders are scawy.

00:16There's the possibility of kickbacks, discs can shatter and lodge directly into your eyeballs, and not to mention, sparks are a-flying.

00:21Call me an anxious girly, but that's not the way I wanna go.

00:23I also would prefer if I didn't have to witness any catastrophic injuries to my dad.

00:26Honestly, I feel like that would've been pretty selfish of him.

00:28But thankfully, no fathers were injured in the process, and I live to tell the tale.

00:31We'll obviously be replacing the pipes, since we'll be doing a little rearranging upstairs.

00:34But even if we weren't, these pipes were k-rusty.

00:37Eww!

00:38I'd much prefer my pipes to not have a bunch of black gunk in it.

00:40But now that that's out of the way, we can remove the studs.

00:42This might not be a load-bearing wall, but we're gonna treat it like it is.

00:45Cause if we're not doing the most, then what are we doing?

00:47We're making a header over the opening to make sure nothing moves that isn't supposed to.

00:50Dad's fastening together a beam from 6x10s that will replace the studs, but there is a slight problem.

00:54We can't just lift the header straight up into the existing space, so in order to be able to come in at an angle,

00:58my dad has to cut the attachment point slightly larger.

01:00Then once we get the beam in place, he can slide a hardwood shim underneath to hoist it up.

01:04And if you're confused by the plan, so was I.

01:06But I'm not here to ask questions.

01:07I'm here to do what my dad says.

01:08And though it may have taken 20-something years to listen to him, I finally got there.

01:12So let's see this plan in action, shall we?

01:13We decided to support the ceiling on either side of the header while we remove the studs,

01:16just in case anything decided to get a little shifty.

01:18If you live in an old home made of plastered walls, you know plaster does not like movement.

01:22And nothing is worse than fixing a plaster ceiling.

01:24Now that the ceiling has the support it needs, we can start cutting down the studs.

01:27And last but certainly not least, we can place the header.

01:29And hope nothing goes terribly wrong.

01:31And for the moment of truth, we should be able to remove these two by fours without the house falling down.

01:34Can I get a drumroll, please?

01:38Ta-da!

01:38Mission accomplished.

01:39And that officially completes demolition of this kitchen.

01:43Look at all that room for activity!

01:45Now let's make this kitchen beautiful!
