Watch the worst decision I've ever made as I turn this antique vanity into nightstands.
00:03
Let's try that again.
00:04
Take two!
00:05
Oh my god, would you just fall already?
00:06
Just...
00:07
Oh my god, this transition was horrible.
00:09
I'm embarrassed.
00:10
This is probably the most poorly painted piece I've ever worked with.
00:12
I feel like they just dumped a can of paint over the top and said,
00:14
there you go, it's painted.
00:15
Oh yeah, and none of the drawers open.
00:17
Not a single one.
00:18
But you want to know the worst part?
00:20
Is they painted the inside of the drawers pink.
00:21
I mean the whole thing, top to bottom.
00:23
Oh my god, I'm getting PTSD just looking at it.
00:26
Additionally, as if there couldn't be anything else wrong with it,
00:29
the veneer is falling off.
00:30
I pulled this off with my bare hands.
00:31
I had no idea what to do with this, so just like the rest of my problems, I ignored it.
00:35
But now we're here, six months later,
00:37
and I'm ready to punish myself for making bad decisions on Facebook Marketplace.
00:40
I started by sanding off this horrible pink paint.
00:42
But because it was high gloss and about four layers, it did not want to be sanded.
00:45
So I used a stripper, which I will not be naming here.
00:48
Because it made this project and many of my others a nightmare.
00:51
Let's observe as young, naive Amanda thinks that this is a good decision.
00:55
At the end of the day, the paint had to come off.
00:57
It was making all the drawers sticky so they wouldn't slide.
00:59
And it was atrocious.
01:01
Lucky enough for me, the stripper seeped through the inside.
01:03
So that also had to be stripped.
01:05
Now in some cases, the stripper that will not be named worked flawlessly.
01:08
But in other spots, many other spots, it did not do this.
01:11
I like to keep it real with you.
01:13
Not every project, most of them, in fact, kind of suck, all right?
01:17
And I will gladly put this at the top of the things that I will never ever do again.
01:21
Oh man, the frustration, the frustration.
01:25
I should have just left this in the trash.
01:27
Amanda, why do you think you have to save every piece?
01:30
You definitely don't, especially this one.
01:32
It was horrible.
01:33
But I am woman.
01:34
And woman, I am strong.
01:36
So I'm persevering.
01:37
And here's what we're looking like after the first scrape.
01:42
Let's take a break from that, shall we?
01:43
Now both of these had failing veneer.
01:44
But this one wasn't as easy to get off.
01:47
Once I realized I couldn't just pull it off with my hands, I grabbed my heat gun.
01:50
The heat allows the glue to loosen up so you can easily get your paint scraper underneath.
01:54
Be careful you don't leave the heat on too long.
01:56
You're not trying to start a bonfire.
01:58
What a mess.
01:59
What a mess.
02:00
Yes, back to the drawers.
02:01
Once I was able to get the majority of the paint off the outside,
02:03
I was able to stand it down because the wood itself actually wasn't allowing the drawers to slide.
02:07
So they all had to be shaved down with some 80 grit.
02:09
The inside, however, was not as easy.
02:10
There was paint in every single groove you could imagine.
02:14
I am having so much fun.
02:16
I used everything you can imagine to get this paint off.
02:18
A bristled brush, a dental pick, steel wool, my blood, sweat, and tears, all of it.
02:22
Look, I did my best.
02:23
And it is what it is.
02:24
So moving on to the structural stuff.
02:26
Dad's using a hammer and a chisel to get any veneer that was stuck to the edges.
02:29
Then I use a carbide scraper to clean up the inside edge and smooth it out.
02:33
Then I use 150 grit to smooth out any texture that the veneer left behind.
02:36
Not gonna lie, I left some gouges in the wood from the veneer.
02:39
Those will be filled later.
02:40
Let me remind you that this once was a vanity.
02:42
So this once had a mirror.
02:43
And that's the hole that it went in.
02:44
So we're gonna replace that as if nothing ever happened.
02:47
Mirror who? Mirror what? No mirror here.
02:49
We took some scrap wood and then traced the shape of the top.
02:52
Then Dad used his bandsaw to cut the approximate shape.
02:54
We glued it in place with Titebond 2.
02:56
And then drilled some pilot holes before nailing it into the back.
02:59
Then I finished shaping it with my Unita 3x4 on a low setting.
03:02
Dad cut a piece to go underneath it to make everything look complete.
03:05
Lastly, we added this thin piece of plywood to the other side to make both sides symmetrical.
03:09
And you can see there were quite a few spots that needed filling.
03:12
Okay, a lot of filler was used in this project.
03:14
Then I sanded my little heart out until I couldn't sand anymore.
03:17
Now for what you all came to see.
03:19
How do we make this more beautiful?
03:20
Stencils!
03:21
But with a twist.
03:22
I had this decorative sealer just laying around so I spritzed the design that I wanted.
03:26
Was this a necessary step? I don't know.
03:28
But I kept doing it and it made me feel better so...
03:30
Then I took my DAP premium wood filler and started filling in the stencil.
03:33
This is my first time trying it so we'll see how it goes.
03:36
Did it work? Yes it did. Flawlessly.
03:38
Then I let that dry for 24 hours.
03:39
Then did it again.
03:41
And then let it dry.
03:42
And then did it again.
03:43
And then let it dry and then did it again.
03:45
Until I was finally able to sand it with 220.
03:47
Let's get all that sanding dust off.
03:49
See how we're looking.
03:50
Then I sealed all the wood filler in with Killz primer.
03:53
Then she was painted and sealed.
03:54
Fine I'll show you.
03:56
Yes I'll get closer don't yell at me.
03:57
Yeah I know they're beautiful.
03:59
You don't have to tell me twice.
04:00
But I have never hated doing a project so much.
04:03
In fact I was this close from quitting furniture flipping.
04:06
This close!
04:07
This is the stupid project.
04:09
But you know what?
04:10
Then I reminded myself that I'm amazing.
04:12
And my dad's even more amazing.
04:14
And you're amazing for even watching this video.
04:16
So thank you and I'll see you on the next furniture flip.
04:18
It's too late to apologize it's too late
