00:00Watch the worst decision I've ever made as I turn this antique vanity into nightstands.

00:05Oh my god, would you just fall already?

00:07Oh my god, this transition was horrible.

00:09I'm embarrassed.

00:10This is probably the most poorly painted piece I've ever worked with.

00:12I feel like they just dumped a can of paint over the top and said,

00:14there you go, it's painted.

00:15Oh yeah, and none of the drawers open.

00:17Not a single one.

00:18But you want to know the worst part?

00:20Is they painted the inside of the drawers pink.

00:21I mean the whole thing, top to bottom.

00:23Oh my god, I'm getting PTSD just looking at it.

00:26Additionally, as if there couldn't be anything else wrong with it,

00:29the veneer is falling off.

00:30I pulled this off with my bare hands.

00:31I had no idea what to do with this, so just like the rest of my problems, I ignored it.

00:35But now we're here, six months later,

00:37and I'm ready to punish myself for making bad decisions on Facebook Marketplace.

00:40I started by sanding off this horrible pink paint.

00:42But because it was high gloss and about four layers, it did not want to be sanded.

00:45So I used a stripper, which I will not be naming here.

00:48Because it made this project and many of my others a nightmare.

00:51Let's observe as young, naive Amanda thinks that this is a good decision.

00:55At the end of the day, the paint had to come off.

00:57It was making all the drawers sticky so they wouldn't slide.

00:59And it was atrocious.

01:01Lucky enough for me, the stripper seeped through the inside.

01:03So that also had to be stripped.

01:05Now in some cases, the stripper that will not be named worked flawlessly.

01:08But in other spots, many other spots, it did not do this.

01:11I like to keep it real with you.

01:13Not every project, most of them, in fact, kind of suck, all right?

01:17And I will gladly put this at the top of the things that I will never ever do again.

01:21Oh man, the frustration, the frustration.

01:25I should have just left this in the trash.

01:27Amanda, why do you think you have to save every piece?

01:30You definitely don't, especially this one.

01:32It was horrible.

01:33But I am woman.

01:34And woman, I am strong.

01:36So I'm persevering.

01:37And here's what we're looking like after the first scrape.

01:42Let's take a break from that, shall we?

01:43Now both of these had failing veneer.

01:44But this one wasn't as easy to get off.

01:47Once I realized I couldn't just pull it off with my hands, I grabbed my heat gun.

01:50The heat allows the glue to loosen up so you can easily get your paint scraper underneath.

01:54Be careful you don't leave the heat on too long.

01:56You're not trying to start a bonfire.

01:58What a mess.

01:59What a mess.

02:00Yes, back to the drawers.

02:01Once I was able to get the majority of the paint off the outside,

02:03I was able to stand it down because the wood itself actually wasn't allowing the drawers to slide.

02:07So they all had to be shaved down with some 80 grit.

02:09The inside, however, was not as easy.

02:10There was paint in every single groove you could imagine.

02:14I am having so much fun.

02:16I used everything you can imagine to get this paint off.

02:18A bristled brush, a dental pick, steel wool, my blood, sweat, and tears, all of it.

02:22Look, I did my best.

02:23And it is what it is.

02:24So moving on to the structural stuff.

02:26Dad's using a hammer and a chisel to get any veneer that was stuck to the edges.

02:29Then I use a carbide scraper to clean up the inside edge and smooth it out.

02:33Then I use 150 grit to smooth out any texture that the veneer left behind.

02:36Not gonna lie, I left some gouges in the wood from the veneer.

02:39Those will be filled later.

02:40Let me remind you that this once was a vanity.

02:42So this once had a mirror.

02:43And that's the hole that it went in.

02:44So we're gonna replace that as if nothing ever happened.

02:47Mirror who? Mirror what? No mirror here.

02:49We took some scrap wood and then traced the shape of the top.

02:52Then Dad used his bandsaw to cut the approximate shape.

02:54We glued it in place with Titebond 2.

02:56And then drilled some pilot holes before nailing it into the back.

02:59Then I finished shaping it with my Unita 3x4 on a low setting.

03:02Dad cut a piece to go underneath it to make everything look complete.

03:05Lastly, we added this thin piece of plywood to the other side to make both sides symmetrical.

03:09And you can see there were quite a few spots that needed filling.

03:12Okay, a lot of filler was used in this project.

03:14Then I sanded my little heart out until I couldn't sand anymore.

03:17Now for what you all came to see.

03:19How do we make this more beautiful?

03:20Stencils!

03:21But with a twist.

03:22I had this decorative sealer just laying around so I spritzed the design that I wanted.

03:26Was this a necessary step? I don't know.

03:28But I kept doing it and it made me feel better so...

03:30Then I took my DAP premium wood filler and started filling in the stencil.

03:33This is my first time trying it so we'll see how it goes.

03:36Did it work? Yes it did. Flawlessly.

03:38Then I let that dry for 24 hours.

03:39Then did it again.

03:41And then let it dry.

03:42And then did it again.

03:43And then let it dry and then did it again.

03:45Until I was finally able to sand it with 220.

03:47Let's get all that sanding dust off.

03:49See how we're looking.

03:50Then I sealed all the wood filler in with Killz primer.

03:53Then she was painted and sealed.

03:54Fine I'll show you.

03:56Yes I'll get closer don't yell at me.

03:57Yeah I know they're beautiful.

03:59You don't have to tell me twice.

04:00But I have never hated doing a project so much.

04:03In fact I was this close from quitting furniture flipping.

04:06This close!

04:07This is the stupid project.

04:09But you know what?

04:10Then I reminded myself that I'm amazing.

04:12And my dad's even more amazing.

04:14And you're amazing for even watching this video.
