00:00It will be an uphill task for Malaysia to reclaim its Asian Tiger status, a labour which
00:07was earlier today disputed by an UMNO stalwart.
00:11Former Law Minister Zayed Ibrahim said this, adding that while Malaysia was not an Asian
00:15Tiger economy, a term used to describe the fast-growing economies of Taiwan, South Korea,
00:20Singapore and Hong Kong in the 1990s, it was still a smallish type of tiger.
00:25He also said that Asian Tigers share common characteristics including a highly educated
00:30populace, sharp export earnings and a high savings rate.
00:36According to Zayed, producing an educated populace is the most challenging part for
00:39Malaysia if it wished to be considered an Asian Tiger.
00:44Earlier today, Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan said the positive outlook from
00:48analysts and rating agencies, supported by encouraging economic figures, signals that
00:53Malaysia is making great strides to reclaim its Asian Tiger status.
00:57This morning, FMT reported Tenggur Razali Hamzah as saying that Malaysia was never an
01:01Asian Tiger, contrary to a claim by former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
01:07Malaysia was once tipped to be the fifth Asian Tiger, but the country's economic growth
01:11was derailed by the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
