00:01Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said extending the service of civil servants, including top judges,
00:07is not automatic and must follow the procedures set out in the federal constitution.
00:12Anwar said he found it puzzling that the retirements of civil servants,
00:16judges or other officials were being questioned.
00:20He noted that he had faced criticism over this issue.
00:24He said there appeared to be a campaign to pressure the government
00:27to either extend or end specific tenures,
00:30which he warned could politicize institutions meant to remain independent.
00:35Anwar also repeated his defense of his non-involvement in two high-profile court decisions,
00:41one involving Najib Razak, who received a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in the SRC International case,
00:48and the other involving Muar MP Syed Sadiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who was fully acquitted of corruption charges.
00:54He said public reactions to both cases had been inconsistent and seemed to be politically driven.
01:01Anwar said the judiciary must ultimately be shielded from undue pressure, whether political or otherwise.
