00:01An economist says the government needs to plug inefficiencies in its departments and agencies
00:06to ensure the additional 10 billion ringgit yearly revenue expected from an expansion of the sales and service tax regime is spent wisely.
00:15Ahmad Razman Abdul Latif of Pooja Business School said the government is currently prioritizing procurement reform
00:21by introducing an open tender system to replace direct negotiations.
00:25He said the open tender system offers a more structured approach which is essential to prevent wastage in public spending.
00:34Meanwhile, Bank Mwamalat Malaysia Berhad Chief Economist Avzanizam Rashid said the procurement reforms being implemented alongside the SST
00:42would help narrow the country's fiscal deficit.
00:46He said the dual initiatives would broaden fiscal space, enabling the government to enhance social assistance
00:52and allocate more funds for infrastructure development.
00:55Previously, Treasury Secretary General Johan Mahmoud Mary Khan said the government was reforming the procurement system
01:04to ensure revenue is spent optimally and curb leakages.
01:08Johan said the SST expansion is expected to generate an additional 5 billion ringgit this year
01:14and 10 billion ringgit annually beginning next year.
