00:01 It is a normal practice in the aviation industry for airlines to impose fees for name changes on tickets.
00:08 This is what the Malaysian Aviation Commission had to say following criticisms by former law minister
00:14 Zayed Ibrahim, who accused the commission of failing to protect the interests of passengers.
00:19 Last week, Zayed hit out at Mavcom, citing a recent incident in which he was charged
00:24 RM50 for correcting a minor error in his name while checking in for a flight.
00:29 However, Mavcom said each airline has its own policy for name changes depending on whether
00:35 it's a minor or major change that could affect passenger information and identity.
00:40 "This is a global commercial practice aimed at ensuring smooth travel experiences,"
00:45 a Mavcom spokesman said.
00:47 The spokesman also said airlines were responsible for ensuring the accuracy of passenger details
00:52 such as names, identification, visa requirements, travel restrictions,
00:57 and other relevant information before boarding.
01:00 Meanwhile, in his post on X, Zayed also said airlines took up to 90 days for refunds
01:06 if they cancelled flights, describing this as "absolutely unfair" to passengers.
01:10 In response, the Mavcom spokesperson said that under the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection
01:16 Code 2016, passengers have the right to a full refund within 30 days for any unused part of
01:23 their ticket, including taxes and fees.
