00:00 For Everton, the international break has left them 10 points worse off
00:05 in the league than they were going into it,
00:08 thanks to a Premier League decision to punish them.
00:11 Let's look back on what Will Rooney told me about the situation
00:14 and what it means for Everton going forward.
00:17 Well, for breaching a financial rule of the Premier League,
00:21 procting sustainability rules in the 2021/22 season,
00:26 it was after the club posted its accounts, I think it was combined losses
00:31 over three years of £372 million, and Premier League rules only allow
00:36 over a three-year period a maximum of £105 million.
00:40 Everton robustly defended themselves.
00:43 They said they were working with the Premier League throughout,
00:46 but they were obviously hit with the charge,
00:49 and the Independent Commissioners decided to slap them with a 10-point deduction,
00:54 which I think has caused a seismic reaction across football.
00:59 I think the last points deduction was supported in 2009/2010
01:03 when they went into administration.
01:06 That was a nine-point deduction. I think Mizzlesborough have had a points deduction
01:09 in the past, and Arsenal, Man Utd have had one for Brawl.
01:13 But in terms of financial rules, this is definitely unprecedented.
01:18 I don't think anyone thought that it would be as severe as it is
01:21 if it was going to be a points deduction.
01:23 I then wanted to make clear whether this punishment had caught Everton off guard
01:28 and what their plans were moving forward in terms of appealing the league's decision.
01:33 I think so. I think Everton have known they're in a sticky position for a while
01:40 when it comes to finance. I think everyone knows that it's well-documented
01:44 the managerial changes and the money on players' transfers,
01:48 that was wasted on so many of them.
01:51 They were trying to accelerate themselves to the top,
01:54 trying to go from being pretenders who are just always on the cusp
01:59 of maybe looking like they might break in to really accelerate,
02:03 and it backfired. I mean, Everton, not this season, but the past two seasons,
02:07 have regressed on the pitch. They can't deny that.
02:10 Those two relegation battles, it only just stays up.
02:13 But they've been working with the Premier League.
02:16 When they've been making transfers in the past, they have been working
02:20 with them to see if it was OK to do these deals.
02:23 I think that's why Everton were shocked when they were hit with the charge initially.
02:27 Everton face Manchester United on Sunday, whilst in the early kick-off on Saturday,
02:32 Liverpool take the short trip to the Etihad to come up against Manchester City.
02:37 Jürgen Klopp's side have not always had the best of luck in recent years
02:42 in league fixtures against Manchester City.
02:44 At Manchester, something they will be hoping to change this time round.
02:48 The sides sit first and second with the victor cementing themselves
02:52 at the summit of the Premier League.
02:54 It promises to be an explosive encounter early on on Saturday.
02:59 That is all for your Merseyside football round-up this week.
