Daniel Wales looks at the latest Newcastle United transfer news.
Transcript
00:00Now as Newcastle United gear up for their return to the Champions League
00:05following their absence, obviously an incredible scene to get back
00:09with how tight the race was for Premier League
00:12in terms of the top of the Premier League table last season
00:15to get into Champions League, those spots was incredibly admirable
00:20from Eddie Howe's side, they obviously returned a major trophy as well
00:24in last season, but they now need to make sure they kick on
00:27and make sure they are sustainable at the top
00:30and competitive as well in future seasons.
00:33They want to make sure that it's not just a one-off stint again
00:36and they go flying straight back into the new campaign
00:39and straight following up there.
00:41In terms of their transfer situation, it's obviously a bit of a slower,
00:45sort of one of the slower clubs getting players in,
00:49but squad depth was a bit of an issue in terms of the Champions League season
00:53they had prior due to the injuries and not really knowing
00:57who to create that best XI that's going to really get them results in Europe
01:02and that's obviously a new look Champions League format as well,
01:05so it's going to be very interesting and then they want to stay competitive
01:08in the Premier League as well, that's so important for them
01:10and their owners and Eddie Howe's vision taking them forward
01:13and then maybe try and defend their League Cup title as well,
01:18so there's a lot to look forward to, but in terms of transfers,
01:21we're going to go to our North East correspondent, Dan Wales.
01:24Dan, what's your thoughts on Newcastle, where they are ahead of this transfer,
01:28any sort of updates, incomings, outgoings, what's the latest you can tell us
01:32from St James' Park?
01:34Well, Charles, in reality, the only tangible piece of news we've had
01:37at Newcastle United is the departure of Callum Wilson,
01:41who has finally left the club after several seasons on Tyneside,
01:46scoring 49 goals in all and overall, providing a great contribution
01:50to the club in some darker times and some more positive times
01:54for Newcastle United, but he leaves with everyone's best wishes
01:57from Newcastle United, certainly lots of players have been paying tribute
02:00to him as he's now come to the end of his contract
02:02and not able to reach an agreement over a perhaps new contract
02:06in which Newcastle was suggesting a pay-as-you-play deal,
02:09but ultimately, Cameron Wilson decided not to go for that
02:12and given the fact that in the last season of his time at Newcastle,
02:16his body was starting to fail him a little bit, injuries had taken their toll
02:19and yes, he was fit for a large part of the second half of the season,
02:22ultimately, just his pace wasn't there and his body just wasn't holding up
02:27to the strains of Premier League football, but everyone at the club
02:31has wished him all the best now he has departed Newcastle United,
02:34but that's the only really tangible piece of news that Newcastle have had.
02:38And we do know that talks are still ongoing for Anthony Alanga
02:42between Newcastle and Nottingham Forest,
02:45with the two clubs supposedly edging closer to a deal
02:47over the Swedish right-winger for around ÂŁ55 million plus some add-ons.
02:52That's the latest information that we have,
02:55although progress is still slow in terms of getting that
02:58to a complete and fully closed deal.
03:02So Newcastle perhaps frustrated by that,
03:05and I believe that a lot of supporters are as well,
03:07but they are edging closer to a deal.
03:09That would see Newcastle bring in their first right-winger
03:12since the takeover of October 2021.
03:15Of course, James Trafford still remains on the table,
03:17the Burnley goalkeeper as well, that supposedly is also edging ever closer.
03:22It often seems at the moment that Newcastle are just edging
03:24step-by-step closer to these two deals that are currently on the table.
03:28Of course, that won't be it from an incoming's perspective
03:32for Newcastle once those two, or if those two do, come in to the club
03:36because they also would like a centre-half to play alongside Sven Botman
03:40and someone to come in to be an eventual Fabian Shaw replacement
03:43as well as also perhaps a replacement for Dan Byrne
03:47if Botman is to also be fully fit this season as well
03:50because, of course, Shaw and Byrne, as good as they were last season,
03:53they are perhaps coming to the twilight years of their career
03:57and they won't go on forever.
03:58So Newcastle need to look to the future as well.
04:00For example, Scalvini from Atalanta has been mentioned an awful lot
04:04whether Newcastle and the Italian side are able to come to a deal over him.
04:09That remains to be seen, but he's the one who's currently being played in the press
04:13as Newcastle's top centre-half target to play alongside Sven Botman.
04:17And so that is really it for the moment from Newcastle's perspective
04:20in terms of incomings.
04:21It's very much Alanga, Trafford and perhaps Scalvini,
04:24although whether that one is as true as the other two, still remains to be seen.
04:29Perhaps they would like a striker to cover Callum Wilson's absence,
04:33well, departure, I should say, now
04:34and give some relief to Alexander Izak,
04:37although you'd imagine also that Willis Sula would get some of that responsibility.
04:40They might also want to do that, though,
04:42with some time still left in the transfer window.
04:44go!
