00:00In a development that not many people saw coming, Newcastle United have announced the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell, who will leave the club at the end of June.
00:11Mitchell has only been in the role for less than a year, so let's look back at his time in the North East and come to a conclusion as to why he is now leaving his post after so little time at the club.
00:53With Newcastle's squad heading out to Germany for a pre-season training camp, the news of Mitchell's arrival at the club took Eddie Howe, the head coach, by something of a surprise.
01:06And at first, the working relationship between Mitchell and Howe was fraught with difficulty, with the two not speaking for large periods during the summer.
01:16It was reported that Howe was unhappy with his weight in the transfer decision-making process being lessened.
01:23This came at a time when Howe had lost his ally in Amanda Staveley at the club and was being linked to the vacant England manager's role.
01:31Newcastle did manage to bring in Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth and William Ossula from Sheffield United, but several attempts to bring Mark Gay of Crystal Palace to the club failed, despite negotiations being led by Paul Mitchell.
01:42The onus was then on Howe to deliver, which he did by winning Newcastle the Carabao Cup and delivering Champions League football.
01:49Mitchell and Howe's relationship has improved, but with CEO Darren Eel set to depart, clearly Mitchell thought his time was up as well.
01:57With Mitchell set to remain at the club until the end of June, he will be perhaps looking to make at least one key signing for Newcastle before he departs the club.
02:08Following Newcastle's qualification to the Champions League after their last game of the season against Everton,
02:14Eddie Howe stressed the importance for signings in their summer transfer window and being quick with their decision-making.
02:20I think if you said at the start of the season, especially the way we started the season, how the season would end,
02:28you know, you'd find or struggle to find too many people believe that we were in a position to do that at that time.
02:34We had an inconsistent beginning. We had a disruptive summer.
02:39You know, we haven't signed a sort of a major big signing in three transfer windows.
02:44They're all huge challenges. Lost players as well that we wouldn't have wanted to lose.
02:50So the players that we do have regrouped and just gave more and gave everything, and that's why they deserve huge credit.
02:57It's very easy now to look back and see it through different eyes, but they're the challenges that we faced.
03:03A brilliant group to manage and to work with every day, very professional, and they've got their rewards.
03:09I think all summers are massive and, you know, it's very difficult to put one ahead of the other.
03:14But I think when we haven't been active in the market for so long, in the manner that we want to be active,
03:21then there is a danger that you go over a line that the squad weakens because you haven't been doing what you need to do
03:28to refresh the group, to challenge the players with new players coming in.
03:32And it's a summer that we have to do that.
03:33I know there's that intention throughout the club to do that, and that is the plan.
03:40Yeah, speed is key for us, and I've reiterated that many times internally.
03:45Speed is key because we have to be dynamic, we have to be ready to conclude things very, very quickly
03:49because good players don't hang around for long.
03:52That's always been my thought and my message on recruitment, really,
03:56because you can have a period where you think you've got time,
04:01but then you can look around very quickly and realise that that time's elapsed
04:04and you've missed opportunities that you won't get again.
04:06So that's what we'll be trying.
04:10But obviously the reality of that is it's not always in your hands,
04:13but we'll be doing our best to do things early.
04:16Despite Mitchell's imminent departure from Newcastle United,
04:19reports have suggested that business is going on as usual at the club
04:23in terms of preparing for the upcoming transfer window
04:26with targets already been identified and negotiations being prepared.
04:30When Mitchell does leave, however, things may need something of a rework,
04:35but Newcastle are still in line to produce what should be
04:38a big transfer window for the club going forward.
