00:00 "Why regenerate Subang Airport using 300 million ringgit in taxpayer funds, despite
00:07 expert advice questioning its viability," said an aviation industry insider.
00:14 In June, Transport Minister Lok Siu Fok announced that the Cabinet had approved the redevelopment
00:19 of Subang's Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, with design and other details to be finalised
00:25 within a month.
00:28 The decision followed a proposal by Malaysia Airport's Holdings Berhad to redevelop SZB
00:34 into a regional aviation hub in a joint venture with Subang Skypark Sendirian Berhad, a subsidiary
00:40 of WCT Holdings Berhad owned by property tycoon Desmond Lim.
00:47 The well-placed source said the joint venture plans to seek as much as R290 million in taxpayer
00:53 funds for the project, which will involve the construction of a brand new green airport
00:58 terminal, commercial buildings and a car park.
01:03 It is understood that MAHP's board approved the plan despite a feasibility study generating
01:10 unfavourable results and without the proposal being referred to the Finance and Transport
01:15 Ministries.
01:17 The study, conducted by Netherlands Airport Consultants, a renowned consultant based in
01:23 The Hague, said the plan will eat into traffic at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport
01:28 and may cause Malaysia's premier international airport a loss of up to 2 million passengers
01:33 annually.
01:35 Another source also questioned the plan, saying the process does not sit well with the unity
01:41 government's "madani" aspirations of good governance, transparency and accountability.
