00:00:00Previously on Project Run.
00:00:02Please welcome these Team USA athletes.
00:00:05Your challenge is to make each of them their ideal victory dress.
00:00:09How many medals have you?
00:00:1017.
00:00:11No!
00:00:12I want to showcase my prosthetic.
00:00:14This is like the Olympics of fashion.
00:00:16Look at you!
00:00:18She looks stunning.
00:00:19She's radiating joy and beauty.
00:00:21You look like a bag of money.
00:00:23Fashion, function, fantasy.
00:00:26It's a winning combination.
00:00:27Nancy, you are the winner.
00:00:30Not one of your clients felt any way other than the best version of themselves.
00:00:34You are all safe.
00:00:37What competition is this?
00:00:39No one goes home.
00:00:44At stake for the winner?
00:00:46A quarter of a million dollars, courtesy of Blueprint.
00:00:50A feature in Elle magazine?
00:00:52$50,000 supplied by Pilot FriXion erasable pens.
00:00:56And a career-changing mentorship with the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
00:01:02This is Project Runway.
00:01:12Welcome back to the runway.
00:01:14Hi, designers.
00:01:16He's been waiting his whole life to say that.
00:01:18You are the final six.
00:01:20Congratulations to you.
00:01:24But the next challenge, only four will go on.
00:01:31Since no one went home last week, two people have to go home this week.
00:01:34And it does suck.
00:01:35But I just have to make it over this one hurdle.
00:01:38Only one challenge remains to determine who's going to create a collection for New York Fashion Week.
00:01:45Wow.
00:01:47And that challenge is avant-garde.
00:01:53Yes!
00:01:54Yes!
00:01:56Yes!
00:01:57Quite literally, the French term avant-garde means ahead of the pack.
00:02:01It's something that makes you feel a feeling.
00:02:03It's something that challenges the system.
00:02:05It's something that goes beyond the norm that we see on the runway.
00:02:09Avant-garde fashion deserves an equally avant-garde platform.
00:02:13No one has ever shown in this space.
00:02:18Are you kidding me?
00:02:19Oh, my God.
00:02:23Oh!
00:02:24Oh, my God!
00:02:26The Vessel, one of New York's newest, most innovative landmarks, will be the destination of your show.
00:02:35Oh!
00:02:36Jesus!
00:02:38The Vessel is this cocoon-shaped, intricately balanced,
00:02:42web of staircases.
00:02:45It's my favorite building in New York.
00:02:46I can't believe this is happening.
00:02:48All right, guys.
00:02:49It's time to pick models.
00:02:51We have Nora, Fidgen, Deedee, UN, Sivarin, and Madeline.
00:02:58And, Nancy, you won the last challenge.
00:03:01So you get to pick your model first, and you get to choose who gets to pick their model next.
00:03:07I have to take Deedee to the top.
00:03:09I think you work very well with Deedee.
00:03:11Nancy, who would you like to pick next?
00:03:12Now I have to go with my current roommate.
00:03:14Okay.
00:03:15Sergio?
00:03:16I'm gonna pick UN.
00:03:17UN?
00:03:18Okay.
00:03:19Yes.
00:03:20Who would you like to pick next?
00:03:21I'm gonna go with my girl, Brittany.
00:03:22All right, Brittany.
00:03:23Severin.
00:03:24Severin.
00:03:25Okay.
00:03:26I have to go with my roomie, Marquise.
00:03:30Okay.
00:03:31Marquise.
00:03:32I'm gonna get Nora.
00:03:33Nora.
00:03:34I'm gonna go with...
00:03:40Jeffrey.
00:03:41I don't feel bad about the fact that I'm last picked.
00:03:44Who are the two left?
00:03:45Fidgen or Madeline?
00:03:46Fidgen.
00:03:47All right.
00:03:48So that means Victoria.
00:03:49You get Madeline.
00:03:50Honestly, I feel good that maybe some designers are afraid of me.
00:03:55This is a two-day challenge.
00:03:59Yes!
00:04:00You guys are gonna have 20 minutes to sketch now, and you'll meet Christian tomorrow at Mood.
00:04:05This is beyond just the clothes.
00:04:07Think about the styling, the hair, the makeup, and show us why you deserve the chance to create a collection to present at New York Fashion Week.
00:04:16Oh, my gosh.
00:04:17Keep in mind that two of you have to go home, so go big or go home.
00:04:24We'll see you guys at the Vessel.
00:04:26That's all.
00:04:34Being a ballroom designer, I have definitely been looking forward to the avant-garde challenge, because ballroom calls for a lot of avant-garde pieces.
00:04:42You're able to make something out of this world.
00:04:49I'm not an avant-garde designer, but my designs are crazy and sick.
00:04:53This style of Vessel is so close to what I create as a designer.
00:04:57Very geometrical, structural.
00:04:59This is my last chance to impress judges, so I'm sketching a backless organza romper with two coats.
00:05:07For this challenge, definitely, it's better more than less.
00:05:12This is the challenge that I have been dreading.
00:05:14I'm not even gonna try to sugarcoat and lie and say, like, oh, I'm so excited!
00:05:18Avant-garde is something that I have dabbled with, but I don't really think in a conceptual way.
00:05:24I think about a very realistic, ready-to-wear way.
00:05:27My concept is talking about the Anibu geisha, which were female samurai warriors.
00:05:34I just wanted to bring light to a time where women were empowered.
00:05:38I'm gonna tell an amazing political story with my inspiration, that women are viewed upon as a weaker thing,
00:05:46and that women can do anything men can do.
00:05:48All right, y'all. Time to go home. Let's do it.
00:05:54Come on, Victoria.
00:05:55Oh, my God.
00:05:56We have all the information.
00:06:05You're doing it fancy today?
00:06:06What do you mean, on a plate?
00:06:07Yeah.
00:06:11Guys, this is our final mood shop. Are y'all ready?
00:06:18Hi, guys.
00:06:19Hey.
00:06:20Hello.
00:06:21Good morning.
00:06:22Good morning. Welcome back to the mood.
00:06:23Good morning.
00:06:24All right, guys. Avant-garde.
00:06:25Fabric choices are everything with this one, I think.
00:06:28So I better not see in the same aisle that I see all season long, this one aisle.
00:06:34Duchess satin, please don't use it, or I'm gonna cut you all.
00:06:39See how seriously we're taking this challenge?
00:06:41Mm-hmm.
00:06:42It's important.
00:06:43And for that reason, you guys have 60 minutes to shop.
00:06:46Nice.
00:06:47Oh, my God.
00:06:48And you have a budget of $600.
00:06:51I need more.
00:06:56That's a lot.
00:06:57Go.
00:06:58Good luck.
00:06:59Mm-hmm.
00:07:00Get up those stairs.
00:07:01Negative E.
00:07:03Uh-huh.
00:07:04Hey, God.
00:07:05Get out of here.
00:07:07Horse hair. Horse hair. I need a lot of it.
00:07:11When I think of the vessel, I see architectural lines. I see light and dark. And it's becoming
00:07:18a very strong inspiration for me. Now, is that stiff, this one? Do you have any stiff stiff? I love to drape. I love to sculpt. I think horse hair creates beautiful shapes. I have to beat out two other designers. It is going to take everything I have.
00:07:36I feel like a rainbow.
00:07:42File and taffeta and colors galore.
00:07:46You don't have black?
00:07:47No, this is where it would be.
00:07:49I've been waiting for this challenge the entire competition. Avant-garde is my thing. It's what I'm best at. It's what people come to me for. So, inspiration for my design right now is Vessel. It's an incredible structure. I want to do something that makes her look kind of ceremonial, regal.
00:08:05If I can't nail this, it's like my client base is just blown.
00:08:09All right, last mood shop. I'm keeping you guys on your toes today. Jeffrey, what do you have?
00:08:13What?
00:08:14This is heavy satin.
00:08:17Uh-huh.
00:08:18You're not using this.
00:08:19Okay.
00:08:20They will murder you.
00:08:21Really?
00:08:24They hated that satin fabric.
00:08:26All right.
00:08:27It was rigid.
00:08:28It was stiff.
00:08:29It was tacky.
00:08:30It was shiny.
00:08:31It's like, get it together, Jeffrey.
00:08:32Because if I don't, I'm definitely going to be headed home.
00:08:34Jeffrey, come on.
00:08:35You can do something unbelievable.
00:08:37Please.
00:08:38All right.
00:08:39Damn.
00:08:40Coming up, I have a little surprise I want to share with everybody.
00:08:43Follow me.
00:08:51I'm making a silver jacket and then some chain pants.
00:08:56I'm looking for a butterfly print.
00:08:58I'm kind of revisiting this idea of the Ashley Longshore challenge.
00:09:01And if I can find something with butterflies on it, I wish they were bigger.
00:09:05I think that this will definitely help bridge this gap between my aesthetic and avant-garde.
00:09:10Give me like three yards of it.
00:09:13All right, guys.
00:09:14Eight minutes.
00:09:16Really?
00:09:17Yeah, really.
00:09:18You had a whole hour.
00:09:19I'm really struggling.
00:09:20I am in my head.
00:09:22Are these all of your colors of latex up here?
00:09:25Yeah.
00:09:26Gray is pretty.
00:09:27Gray is pretty.
00:09:28So I decide to use latex.
00:09:30Latex is one of the few skill sets I haven't been able to show yet.
00:09:33I don't know.
00:09:34Got some stuff.
00:09:35Who are we waiting for?
00:09:37Not me.
00:09:38I mean, Nancy.
00:09:39How's this?
00:09:40Huh?
00:09:41All right.
00:09:42Everybody good?
00:09:43Yes.
00:09:44Good luck.
00:09:45And I'll see you in a few hours for a walk-through.
00:09:46Okay.
00:09:48Get to work.
00:09:49Thank you, Moo.
00:09:50Thank you, Moo.
00:09:52Aw.
00:09:53Aw.
00:09:55Jenna.
00:10:04Well, I don't know which pink I'm gonna use, but I got a bunch of options.
00:10:07One thing I know I want to do in this challenge is use pink to the max.
00:10:11Pink is very feminine, girly, but strong and powerful at the same time.
00:10:15Oh, you're doing the two together?
00:10:17I think it needs it to, like, die down a bit.
00:10:19It's a lot.
00:10:20I'm making my own fabric.
00:10:21I'm cutting small square pieces of faux leather and I'll stitch one by our own organza.
00:10:33I am sure that I have to cut over 1,000 pieces.
00:10:34To make this textile will take definitely up to 70% of all my time.
00:10:47And it's so risky.
00:10:48Actually, I'm very bored.
00:10:49Dump, ba-dump, clump.
00:10:50Ba-dump, clump.
00:10:51Ba-dump, clump.
00:10:52Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click.
00:10:53Over and over again, without stopping.
00:10:54Brittany, you see that?
00:10:55It's gonna be so heavy on her.
00:10:56definitely up to 70% of all my time.
00:10:58And it's so risky, actually, I'm very worried.
00:11:08Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click,
00:11:09over and over again, without stopping.
00:11:22Brittany, you see that?
00:11:23This is gonna be so heavy on her.
00:11:26Let's see.
00:11:26Whoa.
00:11:28Yeah, I really love the chain pants.
00:11:31I think it's really innovative,
00:11:32but they weigh 85,000 pounds.
00:11:35Maybe less chains.
00:11:38Hello.
00:11:39Hi, Christian.
00:11:40Ooh, lots going on in here.
00:11:43Yeah.
00:11:44How's it going?
00:11:45This whole idea of there being no rolls
00:11:46completely freaks me out.
00:11:47Why?
00:11:48That's so fabulous.
00:11:49I know, but it's like you're so vulnerable.
00:11:51Yeah.
00:11:52I was thinking about doing like the 3D butterfly shapes
00:11:55out of these and then covering this.
00:11:57I mean, if you use this and then create
00:12:00these plastic butterflies, that could be awesome.
00:12:04Right.
00:12:04Okay, have fun.
00:12:05Oh, yeah.
00:12:06Good luck.
00:12:07What's happening with latex, you've used it before?
00:12:15Yeah.
00:12:16I used to have a latex company, so-
00:12:18Really?
00:12:19Yeah.
00:12:20Oh, that's cool.
00:12:21I used to have a company from 1999 to 2005 in Chicago.
00:12:25I single-handedly ran production.
00:12:27It's incredibly exhausting, and it was really difficult
00:12:29to keep it going.
00:12:30I still do a lot of custom latex.
00:12:32Cool.
00:12:32For clients and some celebrity custom things.
00:12:36I love that.
00:12:37I've done Gaga, Katy Perry, Britney Spears.
00:12:40I can make latex do stuff that nobody else can.
00:12:42I'm very good at it.
00:12:43It's double elimination.
00:12:45It gives them something as amazing as you can.
00:12:48Yeah.
00:12:48All right.
00:12:49You have a lot of work, so I'm going to leave you.
00:12:50Yes, I do.
00:12:51Thanks, man.
00:12:52All right.
00:12:53All right.
00:12:56Wow.
00:12:57That's really cool.
00:12:58I think I'm going to X out the chain, to be honest.
00:13:00Really?
00:13:01Yeah.
00:13:02So cool as pants, though.
00:13:03This was just, like, light.
00:13:05It's so heavy?
00:13:06Yeah.
00:13:07I don't know.
00:13:08I have some gown ball skirts that are heavy like this.
00:13:10I mean, to be honest, I've not seen a really cool chain
00:13:14pant like this.
00:13:15Yeah.
00:13:16Yeah, I do like the chains.
00:13:17Good luck.
00:13:18Thank you, Christian.
00:13:22You think you'll finish that?
00:13:25Good question.
00:13:26All right.
00:13:27Tell me what you're doing.
00:13:28OK.
00:13:29So what I do is I take fabric to create my new textile,
00:13:32and then it allows me to really be organic.
00:13:34What's it going to be?
00:13:35I don't know.
00:13:36That's what I'm doing.
00:13:37You don't know.
00:13:38Nancy's very creative and likes to kind of do it all on the fly,
00:13:42and I think that's not always the right way.
00:13:44Considering a third of the people are about to get eliminated,
00:13:46it's a little bit risky.
00:13:48I know you love to play with your silhouettes,
00:13:51but I think you should really work out, like,
00:13:53what is this going to be?
00:13:54Like, is this a skirt?
00:13:56Is it a dress?
00:13:57Like, you're always down to the end.
00:13:58I can't be down to the end.
00:13:59OK, well, hurry up.
00:14:00I am.
00:14:05Do you want some cucumber?
00:14:07No, I'm fine with cucumber.
00:14:08What are you doing?
00:14:09I decided to make...
00:14:10God, all I smell is a cucumber.
00:14:12Jesus.
00:14:13OK.
00:14:14So I'm thinking to start with this earring.
00:14:16Mm-hmm.
00:14:17Like this.
00:14:18Very cool.
00:14:19It starts from here.
00:14:20And goes into here?
00:14:21Yes, and goes into the top.
00:14:24But I want to...
00:14:25Does it look pretty?
00:14:26It's weird, at least.
00:14:28Let me show you.
00:14:29So what is this in the end?
00:14:30So in the end, it's a dress.
00:14:32No, look at the sketch.
00:14:33It's...
00:14:34Well, I don't know.
00:14:35It looks like...
00:14:36I don't know what it is.
00:14:37It looks like Lord of the Rings up in here.
00:14:39I don't know what's in your head.
00:14:42Coming up.
00:14:43This is going to be the snap-on buttons.
00:14:45Do you love this jacket?
00:14:53So in the end, it's a dress.
00:14:55No, look at the sketch.
00:14:56It's...
00:14:57Well, I don't know what it is.
00:14:58It looks like Lord of the Rings up in here.
00:14:59It's so hard to explain sometimes my design.
00:15:01Actually, it's hard to explain all the time my designs,
00:15:03but my design has three pieces.
00:15:05One romper and two coats.
00:15:09I did already so much with this textile.
00:15:11There is no chance to turn back.
00:15:13There's a lot of ideas here.
00:15:15Yes.
00:15:16So maybe somewhat the coat gets simplified a little bit.
00:15:19Listen, two of you are going home.
00:15:21I'm not going home.
00:15:22Okay, well...
00:15:23Don't even say this word in front of me.
00:15:25I'm staying here until the end.
00:15:27Well, good, then change it up.
00:15:28Okay.
00:15:29Eat your cucumber.
00:15:30Yes.
00:15:31All right, you guys.
00:15:34I'll see you tomorrow for a model fitting.
00:15:35Okay.
00:15:36All right, see you tomorrow.
00:15:37Thank you, Christian.
00:15:45What's up?
00:15:46Draping for fun.
00:15:47Draping for fun?
00:15:48Yeah.
00:15:49All these designers always look at what I'm doing
00:15:52because I always set up really high bar for everyone,
00:15:55and I feel like I push all the other designers.
00:15:57So my biggest competition is right here.
00:16:00I love the skirt.
00:16:01I am so glad that you love hair.
00:16:04I'm thinking of creating this beautiful tailored coat corset
00:16:08because I don't want to be the sixth look down the runway
00:16:11with big sleeves.
00:16:15Five minutes left.
00:16:16I'm just starting.
00:16:17I just put my first semen.
00:16:18Semen?
00:16:19Tell me if this is too heavy for you.
00:16:23Uh-huh.
00:16:26No, it's okay.
00:16:27All right, guys.
00:16:28Time's up.
00:16:29Let's go.
00:16:30Let's go.
00:16:31Let's go.
00:16:32We are home.
00:16:33And we have no dress.
00:16:34Four to work.
00:16:35Hi.
00:16:36This is your wife.
00:16:37How are you living without me?
00:16:38I'm all right.
00:16:39Let me see if I can translate it.
00:16:40I had a couple bogeys, a few birdies, and then yesterday I had a hole-in-one.
00:16:45About time you had a hole-in-one.
00:16:46I met my husband on a golfing dating site, and I was his one and only internet date.
00:17:06He wasn't my one and only internet date.
00:17:08To be honest, I wasn't real serious about trying to find a love.
00:17:12And I'd kind of been there, done that.
00:17:14But a year later, we were married.
00:17:16It's been nine years.
00:17:17And my life has never been the same.
00:17:20It's harder than I've ever worked.
00:17:22Oh, that's great.
00:17:23Yeah, no, I love it.
00:17:25I feel blessed.
00:17:26I'm here because of the support of my husband and his belief in me.
00:17:30I know I can do this.
00:17:31I'm going all the way.
00:17:33All right, I love you.
00:17:34I'm so glad I finally got to see you.
00:17:35I love you, too.
00:17:36Bye, sweetie.
00:17:37Keep going.
00:17:39Great to meet you, Kyle.
00:17:42Sleep good.
00:17:43In my dreams.
00:17:49Last work for a day, y'all.
00:17:53Can I use this 14-leg form?
00:17:55Yes.
00:17:56Can't wait for Severin to walk in here and be like,
00:17:57oh, my God, you're going to put me in pink again?
00:18:00Portidjan's going to be like, oh, we're going to be on the bottom again.
00:18:02Vika, if I didn't love you so much, I would say stop all that clicking.
00:18:15But I love you so much, so I wouldn't.
00:18:17If you think that I love this sound, you are wrong.
00:18:20Hi, guys.
00:18:24Hey.
00:18:24Hey, Christian.
00:18:25Good morning.
00:18:26All right, guys, listen up.
00:18:27I have a little surprise I want to share with everybody.
00:18:31No.
00:18:32No.
00:18:32It's a good surprise.
00:18:34Okay.
00:18:34Okay.
00:18:34Don't always go to a negative place.
00:18:38Follow me.
00:18:39What?
00:18:40Come on.
00:18:40Come on in.
00:18:45Oh!
00:18:49Come into my room.
00:18:51This is so cool.
00:18:52We made so many.
00:18:54Look how much you guys did.
00:18:56This feels like 100 years ago.
00:18:59To see all of the work, all of the blood, sweat, and tears that we've experienced throughout this
00:19:04whole process in one room, on one rack, I just can't help but feel very accomplished.
00:19:09Aw.
00:19:11Look at you guys.
00:19:12You guys look good.
00:19:14Being so close to the final four, I don't want to lose sight of the reason why I'm here.
00:19:19My brother was shot in a club in 2011.
00:19:23That really took a toll on me.
00:19:25My brother is the reason why I actually moved to New York.
00:19:29You know, he gave me $200 and said, make sure you stay focused, make your dreams happen,
00:19:35because your time is limited here on this earth.
00:19:37So, to make it to this finale, you need to impress upon the judges that you have a unique
00:19:43point of view.
00:19:44Mm-hmm.
00:19:45So, in addition to your avant-garde piece, you'll each be showing two of your past looks.
00:19:53Nice.
00:19:53So, think of it as a retrospective.
00:19:56Yes.
00:19:57Because, guys, this is your last chance to really prove to them who you are as a designer,
00:20:03what a collection would feel like at Fashion Week.
00:20:05It's a great moment.
00:20:06And because I'm nice, each of you are going to have a seamstress today to help tailor these
00:20:13to your new model.
00:20:13Oh, sweet.
00:20:14Oh, my.
00:20:16Well, how would it work?
00:20:17Yeah.
00:20:17Right.
00:20:18Oh, my God.
00:20:19Yes.
00:20:19The judges will have the chance to see our best designs together as a micro collection.
00:20:25I want to be cohesive.
00:20:27Definitely this.
00:20:28So, let's do these two.
00:20:29They're totally different, but also they have something in common.
00:20:32Mm-hmm.
00:20:32I definitely want to use this one because it's got so much detail.
00:20:35Also, this one.
00:20:36First look.
00:20:36It was so strong and beautiful.
00:20:38I think I'm going to go with those two.
00:20:40Wow.
00:20:41Interesting.
00:20:41Yeah.
00:20:42I feel like I really came out, like, during the Cindy challenge and was very me.
00:20:46Cindy look, tuxedo look.
00:20:47Feeling it?
00:20:48Yeah.
00:20:48I'm definitely feeling this.
00:20:50I mean, for sure.
00:20:51For sure.
00:20:52I do want to show menswear.
00:20:54I mean, this really does represent you.
00:20:56Yeah.
00:20:56I do think this represents me.
00:20:59I mean, I think it's amazing.
00:21:01Guess what?
00:21:01I'm having a retrospective at the vessel.
00:21:04I'm doing it.
00:21:05This is going to be one magical moment.
00:21:07All right, guys.
00:21:08Get to work.
00:21:09Thanks, Christian.
00:21:10The interest will be here soon.
00:21:11Yes.
00:21:12How crazy!
00:21:25I think I'm going to have to get one of these brother machines for some of my manipulations.
00:21:29Oh, my God.
00:21:30It'd be so much easier.
00:21:31It's so crazy that you know how to do that.
00:21:33It's crazy.
00:21:34Thanks.
00:21:35I'm working in latex, and it's really tricky.
00:21:38It's all gluing and laying the pieces on top of one another.
00:21:42It's a lot of hand-eye coordination and how the pieces lay together.
00:21:46It's completely different than anything fabric-related.
00:21:49Making it happen.
00:21:50All right, guys.
00:21:53Are you ready for some models?
00:21:54We are.
00:21:54Yes.
00:21:55All right.
00:21:55Seamstresses will meet you in the sewing room, and here come your models.
00:21:58Yay!
00:21:59Nice.
00:21:59Get ready.
00:22:00Get ready.
00:22:01There's a lot.
00:22:02Woo!
00:22:03I get a redemption moment with you.
00:22:06I get a redemption moment with you.
00:22:08Hi.
00:22:09Hi.
00:22:10Oh, my God.
00:22:11Oh.
00:22:12It's just going to be some minor alterations.
00:22:14By the way, Shannon, I won this challenge when I work with you.
00:22:16I knew it!
00:22:17Let me know if it's too heavy or not.
00:22:20Oh, that looks so cool.
00:22:23Mmm!
00:22:24All right.
00:22:25Amazing, amazing.
00:22:26This is way too big.
00:22:27And the back is also, like, really big.
00:22:30But what happens, like...
00:22:31Hmm.
00:22:32That's the avant-garde part.
00:22:33That she can't move?
00:22:34Yeah.
00:22:35I just don't want them to be like, oh, she's, like, in a pink straight jacket.
00:22:41Coming up?
00:22:43Ow, mother !
00:22:45Mother !
00:22:46Oh !
00:22:47Somebody get me a Band-Aid.
00:22:49Jeff, what's happened?
00:22:50Blood.
00:22:56I think you just have to refine a little bit.
00:22:58Right.
00:22:59And I know sometimes that you think the pleats are pretty.
00:23:03But if they're not, like, perfect, they're not really pretty.
00:23:05Right.
00:23:06They look messy.
00:23:07Right.
00:23:08So it looks messy right now.
00:23:09Okay.
00:23:10It's just really, really big right now.
00:23:11What I really want to do with this look is to tell my story.
00:23:14I think I find a lot of inspiration in the strong feminine power vibes.
00:23:18Is this still gonna have butterflies everywhere?
00:23:19Oh, my gosh.
00:23:20So many.
00:23:21Like, everywhere.
00:23:22All over.
00:23:23As a child, I experienced some things that made me feel worthless.
00:23:26And you soak up every single thing that's told to you.
00:23:29This journey is the epitome of me overcoming and proving to myself that I am worth something.
00:23:35That I'm a good designer.
00:23:36And I deserve all of the things that are a conclusion of my hard work.
00:23:41All right.
00:23:42I know what I need to do with this.
00:23:45I know.
00:23:46Maybe a very thin sort of round.
00:23:49Yeah.
00:23:50So it stands.
00:23:51Four.
00:23:52Mm-hmm.
00:23:53Hold the gray up.
00:23:54Oh.
00:23:57You know, it's not much.
00:23:58Because it's only, like, a jacket and a short.
00:24:01Right.
00:24:02Well, um, I was gonna play with a hip bone fin in the same kind of...
00:24:06I think that could be cool.
00:24:07...feel, you know.
00:24:09No pressure, but, you know, $300,000 is at stake right now.
00:24:13And two people are going home.
00:24:15I want to win this so bad, I don't think I've ever wanted anything more in my life.
00:24:19Yeah.
00:24:20Dream a bit more.
00:24:21All right.
00:24:22Perfect.
00:24:26Right?
00:24:27You love it?
00:24:28You love it?
00:24:29Huh?
00:24:30You.
00:24:31Okay, start thinking about hair.
00:24:33So we're gonna actually have this kind of structure on her back.
00:24:38Another one's gonna shoot out, and then another one's gonna shoot out.
00:24:41Almost like a samurai warrior armor.
00:24:44Okay, I like that idea.
00:24:45It looks gorgeous.
00:24:47Some people question my confidence.
00:24:50I think the confidence could be almost, in an essence, armor.
00:24:54It's something that I learned at a young age.
00:24:56I wasn't the most masculine person, and I always loved fashion, so it was just a very difficult situation.
00:25:03I understood that if I exuded confidence, that people wouldn't come at me.
00:25:08I think this is very pretty, that it's, like, big and then nipped and then big.
00:25:11Yeah.
00:25:12By my senior year, my entire high school voted me most likely to succeed.
00:25:17Understanding that you can do anything that you set your mind to is a very powerful thing.
00:25:22All right.
00:25:23Cool.
00:25:24How are the other looks going?
00:25:25Oh, we're done.
00:25:26Did you look amazing?
00:25:27How'd Jingle Bells work?
00:25:28Be jingling.
00:25:29Yeah?
00:25:30All right, now.
00:25:34I think we could possibly bring in the jacket a little bit.
00:25:37That's something I can get stronger.
00:25:38And what was your name?
00:25:39I'm Barbara.
00:25:40Barbara.
00:25:41Jeffrey.
00:25:42Thanks, Mom.
00:25:43I love the help.
00:25:44Wow.
00:25:45What's happening?
00:25:46Yeah.
00:25:47This is going to be, like, the snap-on buttons.
00:25:49Do you love this jacket?
00:25:51Yeah, I do love the jacket.
00:25:53The jacket doesn't feel that innovative.
00:25:56It kind of just feels like a really pointy sculpted shoulder.
00:25:59Play around with it.
00:26:00So if the points, you're thinking if the points are gone?
00:26:03Maybe.
00:26:04Or maybe they turn in or fold or maybe there's pleating here or something already that's cooler.
00:26:11Don't you think?
00:26:12You want me to hold it?
00:26:13I'll hold.
00:26:14You look.
00:26:15Look how cool.
00:26:16Yeah.
00:26:17Masculine, feminine.
00:26:18Play with that.
00:26:19Okay.
00:26:20Yeah, I see it.
00:26:21You see it.
00:26:22Okay, I'm walking away.
00:26:30All right, guys.
00:26:31I brought a guest.
00:26:32Hi.
00:26:33Justine Marjon, the global stylist for Tresemme.
00:26:35You guys know her?
00:26:36Yeah.
00:26:37Great designers.
00:26:38Justine even does hair from my shows.
00:26:40She did my show last season and it was amazing.
00:26:43One of my faves.
00:26:44She's also styled celebs like Kerry Washington and Ashley Graham at the Met Gala.
00:26:48Ooh.
00:26:49Hair design can be a really crucial part of an avant-garde look.
00:26:54So give her a sense of what you guys are creating so you can collaborate on the hairstyle.
00:26:58Sweet.
00:26:59Good luck.
00:27:00Justine, you ready?
00:27:01Yeah, let's do it.
00:27:02Yeah.
00:27:04Hi, Victoria.
00:27:05Hello.
00:27:06How are you?
00:27:07Good.
00:27:08Let's start with the avant-garde.
00:27:10Okay.
00:27:11It's the most craziest one.
00:27:12The hair top will start from a earring.
00:27:14This will be attached to the earring.
00:27:16To the earring.
00:27:17Okay, cool.
00:27:18I'm thinking to hide it.
00:27:19And the hair, just very sleek, even like this.
00:27:24I don't know.
00:27:25I like how this has the round like puff sleeves, so I feel like her hair should be all slicked
00:27:30back and then do like a bun.
00:27:32Do you have some, I don't know, gold sprays?
00:27:34Yeah, you could do it where it like comes here, like have it fan out and have her hair
00:27:39back.
00:27:40Could be cool.
00:27:41Cool.
00:27:42Thank you so much.
00:27:43Yeah, excited to see it.
00:27:44Thank you so much.
00:27:45Oh, great.
00:27:46So they're all wearing head pieces.
00:27:47Yeah.
00:27:48I definitely think you should leave her hair curly, but then do an updo.
00:27:52Styling is key to avant-garde.
00:27:54I think it like big and high.
00:27:56Just go for it because this is your chance to.
00:27:59It's going to be all about the details.
00:28:00I'm going to take every suggestion because I need to get it right.
00:28:05Well, thank you for inspiring me.
00:28:07Can't wait to see how it all comes together.
00:28:15Hey, Brittany.
00:28:16Hi, girl.
00:28:17So this is the start of my vlog.
00:28:18Oh my gosh.
00:28:19This is going to be sitting up.
00:28:20Okay, cool.
00:28:21It's going to have all these little butterfly details.
00:28:23On the dress.
00:28:24Mm-hmm.
00:28:25If you're going to do that cool detail with the butterflies, something that would be really
00:28:28cool to think about is making some of extra.
00:28:30I can do that.
00:28:31And then putting them around the bun.
00:28:32Yeah.
00:28:33Can't wait.
00:28:34Cool.
00:28:35Good luck.
00:28:37All right, guys.
00:28:38That's it.
00:28:39Please say goodbye to your models and Justine, and they'll be back tomorrow morning.
00:28:41Good luck.
00:28:42Bye.
00:28:43Bye.
00:28:44All right.
00:28:45Good luck tomorrow.
00:28:46Well, this is it.
00:28:51You have three hours today, and then tomorrow is the last runway before the finale.
00:28:57The show is at dawn, so you guys will be back here at 3 a.m. to get ready.
00:29:02Nice.
00:29:03Are you going to be here?
00:29:04Obviously, I need a beauty brush, you know?
00:29:07But tomorrow, you guys will have two and a half hours to get your models ready here before
00:29:12we head to the vessel.
00:29:13Okay.
00:29:14Make sure you guys take them to the Tress May Hair Salon, Maybelline Makeup Studio, and
00:29:18take everything you need off that accessory wall.
00:29:21Yeah.
00:29:22This is it.
00:29:23Good luck.
00:29:25Thank you, Christiane.
00:29:26Thank you, Christiane.
00:29:27Three hours.
00:29:28Get it done.
00:29:29Yeah.
00:29:30Okay.
00:29:31No problem.
00:29:32Michelle.
00:29:33Come on.
00:29:34Who needs more time?
00:29:35I do.
00:29:36Okay.
00:29:37I second that.
00:29:38You got it.
00:29:39Thanks, Jeffrey.
00:29:40Yeah.
00:29:41I appreciate it.
00:29:42You're the best.
00:29:43Nancy has got 185 yards of horse hair going on on this look.
00:29:49This is now the fourth challenge that we're seeing horse hair put up on the shoulders
00:29:55and on the neck.
00:29:56It's like...
00:29:59Ugh!
00:30:02Ow, mother .
00:30:04Mother .
00:30:05Oh, .
00:30:07Somebody get me a Band-Aid.
00:30:10Jeff, what happened?
00:30:11Blood.
00:30:12Coming up.
00:30:13This is so beautiful.
00:30:14This makeup and hairstyle is so cliche.
00:30:17Oh, my gosh.
00:30:18Mother .
00:30:19Oh, .
00:30:20Somebody get me a Band-Aid.
00:30:21What?
00:30:22What?
00:30:23Jeff, what happened?
00:30:24The hot water.
00:30:25I pricked my finger and, of course, there's blood everywhere.
00:30:26That's hot.
00:30:27Damn it.
00:30:28Blood is avant-garde, but I wasn't really planning on it, and I'm a bit of a perfectionist,
00:30:43so I'm really not into, like, a blood print right now.
00:30:45It's all wet now, but, um, can I have this?
00:30:48Yeah, but if you made it, I have this.
00:30:49Okay, thank you.
00:30:50Jeffrey, the way you get blood out is your saliva.
00:30:52Okay.
00:30:53So, lick it.
00:30:56I don't know.
00:30:57I think the blood's gone.
00:30:58Um, .
00:30:59I'm okay with just overlapping the elastic.
00:31:00Sure.
00:31:01And then just top stitching.
00:31:03Hey, you are ready to go home?
00:31:04Yeah.
00:31:05Yeah.
00:31:06Yeah.
00:31:07You say so.
00:31:08I'm feeling good about my jacket.
00:31:09It looks pretty cool with the points being folded in.
00:31:11Aw, thank you so much, though.
00:31:13Thank you so much, though.
00:31:15My freshness and newness have kept me in the competition.
00:31:18Can I get, like, five more hours?
00:31:19I see myself making it to the final four.
00:31:20Gonna be back in a couple hours.
00:31:21Let's go.
00:31:22Ugh.
00:31:23Let's go.
00:31:24Ugh.
00:31:25Ugh.
00:31:26Ugh.
00:31:27Thank you so much, though.
00:31:28I'm feeling good about my jacket.
00:31:29It looks pretty cool with the points being folded in.
00:31:30Aw, thank you so much, though.
00:31:32My freshness and newness have kept me in the competition.
00:31:34Can I get, like, five more hours?
00:31:36I see myself making it to the final four.
00:31:38Gonna be back in a couple hours.
00:31:40Let's go.
00:31:41Ugh.
00:31:42Let's go.
00:31:43Ugh.
00:31:55I hate to do this, but guess what?
00:31:57Hmm.
00:31:58Time to go get ready for the runway.
00:32:00I'm not worried with anything in this challenge.
00:32:03Because I've been doing this so long,
00:32:05I've had hundreds of runway shows,
00:32:07so this is just another day in the life of Sergio for me.
00:32:11Last runway show.
00:32:13We're gonna be so efficient in the work room.
00:32:15Mm-hmm.
00:32:16It's gonna be so stressful,
00:32:18and you don't know what to expect, but...
00:32:24So last time in the work room?
00:32:25Yes.
00:32:26Soak up the glory.
00:32:28Back at it!
00:32:29Do it.
00:32:30Oh, God.
00:32:34Oh, in the morning looks better.
00:32:36Here we go.
00:32:37Hooking with Crisco.
00:32:39How long do we have before models, you think?
00:32:42I hear them.
00:32:43They're about to come in, y'all.
00:32:45Hi, models!
00:32:46Hi, guys.
00:32:47Oh, I can try this on here before I saw.
00:32:49First things first, I gotta do a final fit on you.
00:32:52I have boning on this side, but not on this side.
00:32:54So the boning's pretty crucial.
00:32:56Let's see with this sidekick.
00:32:59That's so sick.
00:33:02I will just ask you to help me to cut all this stress.
00:33:06I don't want hands on that now.
00:33:08It's judgment day.
00:33:09Do we want the sleeves?
00:33:11Um, there's definitely a lot happening.
00:33:13I know.
00:33:14That's why I don't know about the sleeves.
00:33:15I don't do things just because, oh, avant-garde, you need interesting sleeves.
00:33:22They don't belong.
00:33:23They're extra.
00:33:24I'm editing my look.
00:33:25The sleeves are off.
00:33:26This is more interesting.
00:33:27Right?
00:33:28Mm-hmm.
00:33:29So then, because I felt like before it was just like an awkward spot.
00:33:31Spot.
00:33:32Yeah, yeah.
00:33:33Now I have just to cover it with beads.
00:33:40Okay.
00:33:42Ah.
00:33:43Ah.
00:33:44When you're finished making a latex garment, if you want to show it properly, you shine it.
00:33:50So I've got to just mop off the powder.
00:33:52Otherwise, when you put on the lube, it gets all, like, milky looking.
00:33:55The best way to shine a garment is using water-based lubricant.
00:33:58I've never seen a lubricant before.
00:34:00No?
00:34:01No.
00:34:02It's the gay staple.
00:34:04Is it?
00:34:05Yeah.
00:34:06Can't have sex without it.
00:34:08Well, you can, but.
00:34:09You ready for some crazy hair and makeup?
00:34:11Oh, yes, I am.
00:34:12It's going to be very avant-garde.
00:34:17Do you have a preference of how many, like, braids we see?
00:34:19Um, I trust your vision.
00:34:21Okay, cool.
00:34:22And I'll probably just use this Tresme gel to get it so it lasts and it will fold really well.
00:34:26Okay.
00:34:28We'll probably do, like, an undersmoke heavy and then wing it out with a little bit of top.
00:34:34That looks super cool.
00:34:37We're still thinking a really high top knot kind of exaggerated and then we'll stick there.
00:34:41Volume.
00:34:42Yes.
00:34:43Okay, perfect.
00:34:44Volume and height.
00:34:45I'm going to hold hairspray at the roots because you have all these little baby hairs.
00:34:51Okay, um.
00:34:53Ugh.
00:34:54Breathe.
00:34:55Jeffrey, breathe.
00:34:56I know.
00:34:57What the is I doing?
00:34:58Okay.
00:34:59Ow!
00:35:00Oh!
00:35:01Damn it.
00:35:02Go, Jeffrey.
00:35:04Go, Jeffrey.
00:35:05Yeah.
00:35:06I'm not doing this one-handed.
00:35:08Okay.
00:35:09I don't need a medic.
00:35:10I'm using tape.
00:35:11Yes, yes, yes.
00:35:14You're perfect.
00:35:16I can't believe I made this in two days.
00:35:20I'm confused about Serge's design.
00:35:22I've seen this makeup and hairstyle so many times before.
00:35:26It's so cliche.
00:35:27So sick.
00:35:29I don't know if the other designers are taking their designs as technically advanced as I am.
00:35:33I don't know if they could create what I've created.
00:35:36Oh, my gosh.
00:35:38All right, guys.
00:35:39Time's up.
00:35:40Oh, my God.
00:35:41Really?
00:35:42No!
00:35:43All right.
00:35:44Let's go.
00:35:46Go.
00:35:48This journey's been long, but extremely rewarding.
00:35:51Just hope that the judges can see that I am 100% capable and deserving of a collection at Fashion Week.
00:35:59All right.
00:36:00Let's do it.
00:36:01I'm on the edge of my seat to find out if I made it to the final four.
00:36:04I still am having trouble believing this is not a dream.
00:36:10Wow.
00:36:11That's just wow.
00:36:13Let's go.
00:36:14There is a $4 million on the line, and I want so bad to win.
00:36:19Oh.
00:36:26Coming up.
00:36:27Oh, my God.
00:36:28Look at this.
00:36:29For Project Runway, this is a first.
00:36:45Wow.
00:36:46Hi.
00:36:47Isn't it amazing?
00:36:48Hello.
00:36:49Hi.
00:36:50Amazing, right?
00:36:51So gorgeous.
00:36:52I love this thing.
00:36:53It's so futuristic.
00:36:54I'm crazy.
00:36:55It's so tall.
00:36:56Are you really that scared of heights?
00:36:57Really?
00:36:58All right.
00:36:59You guys ready?
00:37:00So full.
00:37:01It's so beautiful.
00:37:02It's so beautiful.
00:37:03I'm crazy.
00:37:04It's so tall.
00:37:05Are you really that scared of heights?
00:37:07Really?
00:37:09All right.
00:37:10You guys ready?
00:37:11So full.
00:37:13Is that the elevator?
00:37:15Yeah.
00:37:16No, I'm good on that.
00:37:18Okay, well, please.
00:37:19Cheers.
00:37:20We'll see you guys there.
00:37:21I'm, like, sweating.
00:37:22Okay, come on.
00:37:23We're good.
00:37:24Oh, girl.
00:37:25I don't know about this.
00:37:26No, it's going to be great.
00:37:27It's going to be so quick.
00:37:29I have to go down.
00:37:30I'm sorry.
00:37:31I can't.
00:37:32No, I can't.
00:37:33I'm actually going to lose my mind.
00:37:34No, you're perfect.
00:37:35Just breathe.
00:37:37I can't do it.
00:37:39No, no, no, no, no.
00:37:40Nope.
00:37:45Wait.
00:37:46What happened to Brandon?
00:37:50Looks good from here.
00:37:51Hi, guys.
00:38:06Welcome to the runway.
00:38:07Or, in today's case, welcome to the vessel.
00:38:10Hi, guys.
00:38:11Hi, designers.
00:38:12Rachel, we are so happy you're here.
00:38:15Thank you for having us.
00:38:17Brandon and I were walking up here, and he had a little bit of vertigo, so he's going to enjoy the runway show from a few floors down.
00:38:25Hi, B.
00:38:26Hello.
00:38:27Hey.
00:38:28Hey.
00:38:29For this challenge, we asked the designers to create an avant-garde piece, and, in addition, they would be presenting two of their looks from past challenges that best represent their point of view.
00:38:41Let's start the show.
00:38:42Let's do it.
00:38:43Brandon!
00:38:44We're going to start the show!
00:38:46Lord help these people.
00:38:47Here we go, you guys.
00:38:48Just starting.
00:38:49Oh, God.
00:38:50Whoa.
00:38:51Dude.
00:38:52Amazing.
00:38:53Wow.
00:38:54This is so beautiful.
00:38:55This may be the best fashion show in Project Runway history.
00:39:00I mean, for Project Runway, this is a first.
00:39:16It feels like 100 years ago that I made those looks.
00:39:24I took what I do in an avant-garde way to the max.
00:39:28I took a risk.
00:39:29I created something so beautiful and something that I'm very, very proud of.
00:39:41They did a really great job of curating the collections.
00:39:44Everything looks great together.
00:39:45You don't even know what to say.
00:39:50I really think the judges are going to actually get who I am by seeing these three pieces together.
00:39:56My look is avant-garde.
00:39:58No question.
00:39:59It's modern.
00:40:00It's new.
00:40:01It's a piece of walking art.
00:40:05Oh, my God.
00:40:06Look at this.
00:40:09Fabulous.
00:40:10That's sick.
00:40:12Look at that train go down.
00:40:14Yeah.
00:40:15That's so cool.
00:40:16That's so cool.
00:40:17My three models look so inspiring and I'm just in awe with what I've created in this competition.
00:40:24UN looks spectacular.
00:40:26It's exactly what I envisioned.
00:40:27I'm not only pushing my classic modern aesthetic, but doing it in a really cool way.
00:40:35I feel like I always do a lot more than everybody else in these competitions.
00:40:38So impressed.
00:40:39No, it's really emotional.
00:40:40Beautiful.
00:40:41Mine is going down.
00:40:44Are you so happy?
00:40:46I'm very happy.
00:40:47I love my look.
00:40:48I love my look.
00:40:49It's an avant-garde look.
00:40:50But anyway, it's very wearable and the color of the vessel and my look, they match perfect.
00:40:58I'm trying to take pictures with my eyes just to remember this moment because this is just once in a lifetime.
00:41:05This is so cool.
00:41:07Cool.
00:41:08So dope.
00:41:09All of my looks give off a masculine and feminine vibe.
00:41:14They flow together.
00:41:15They work well together.
00:41:16Nora's definitely standing out in the vessel.
00:41:17It's completely avant-garde.
00:41:18It's looking pretty dope.
00:41:19Very avant-garde.
00:41:20Wow.
00:41:21Beautiful.
00:41:22Nicely done.
00:41:23Wow.
00:41:24Is that latex?
00:41:25Oh my gosh.
00:41:26I want to see that one up close and personal.
00:41:27I know.
00:41:28Right?
00:41:29Did you put shoulder pads in the lips?
00:41:30No, I stuffed them.
00:41:31It looks cool.
00:41:33It looks cool.
00:41:35It looks cool.
00:41:37It looks cool.
00:41:38It looks cool.
00:41:39It looks cool.
00:41:40It looks cool.
00:41:41It looks cool.
00:41:42It looks cool.
00:41:43It looks cool.
00:41:44It looks cool.
00:41:45It looks cool.
00:41:47These looks are definitely me as a designer because they're very future forward.
00:41:51Looks of tomorrow.
00:41:53Fidgen looks incredible.
00:41:55The latex is dragging just right.
00:41:57Kind of liquid blowing down the staircase.
00:42:00I hope they like it.
00:42:02Yeah, Fidgen.
00:42:04She's a badass.
00:42:05Yes.
00:42:06Sure.
00:42:08Look, and then they're going to stop and you'll see the collection.
00:42:11Wow.
00:42:13So dope.
00:42:15Amazing.
00:42:16Yay!
00:42:17Woo!
00:42:18Bravo!
00:42:19I mean, wow.
00:42:20You guys killed it.
00:42:21Four inches.
00:42:22Congratulations.
00:42:24Thank you guys.
00:42:25Wow, look at all of them down there.
00:42:26Brittany's avant-garde look lights up the whole...
00:42:27Yeah.
00:42:28The color is like giving me so much.
00:42:30Look at that.
00:42:31Fabulous.
00:42:32That shape was incredible.
00:42:33Look at that.
00:42:34Amazing.
00:42:35The light shining here.
00:42:36Yeah.
00:42:37This really does feel like art.
00:42:38Wearable art.
00:42:39Yeah.
00:42:40So sculptural.
00:42:41Look at that.
00:42:42Look at that.
00:42:43That's amazing.
00:42:44Look at that.
00:42:45Look at that.
00:42:46Amazing.
00:42:47Look at that.
00:42:48Amazing.
00:42:49Wow.
00:42:50You guys killed it.
00:42:51Congratulations.
00:42:54Thank you guys.
00:42:55Wow, look at all of them down there.
00:42:56Brittany's avant-garde look lights up the whole...
00:42:57Yes.
00:42:58That shape was incredible.
00:42:59Look at that.
00:43:00Amazing.
00:43:01The light shining here.
00:43:02Yeah.
00:43:03This really does feel like art.
00:43:04Wearable art.
00:43:05Yeah.
00:43:06So sculptural.
00:43:07Look at that dress.
00:43:09Wow.
00:43:10And that is exquisite.
00:43:12Victoria's avant-garde look.
00:43:14Yeah.
00:43:15It's stunning.
00:43:16Like the colors, the draping.
00:43:18Jefferies, when you see it at this angle, it's amazing.
00:43:23I am so genuinely proud of them.
00:43:26This is a great show, guys.
00:43:27It's crazy.
00:43:28It's amazing.
00:43:29All right, guys.
00:43:30Let's go meet Brandon downstairs.
00:43:31Get back on the runway so we can determine who will be going on to New York Fashion Week.
00:43:37Yes.
00:43:38Designers, congratulations on an extraordinary fashion show.
00:43:55Please say hello to your judges.
00:43:57Fashion designer, Branda Maxwell.
00:43:58Editor-in-Chief of Elle Magazine, Nina Garcia.
00:43:59Hi, guys.
00:44:00Journalist, Elaine Welteroff.
00:44:01Hi, designers.
00:44:02And your guest judge, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actress from The Marvelous Mrs.
00:44:16Maisel, Rachel Brosnaham.
00:44:17Hello.
00:44:18We've scored your designs and four of you will be moving on to make your collections for
00:44:27New York Fashion Week.
00:44:32Brittany, let's start with you.
00:44:33I want to know, how did you land on this shade of hot pink?
00:44:37It's kind of like the epitome of me in a color.
00:44:40Jolting, but still really feminine and beautiful and powerful.
00:44:44Kudos on your color choice.
00:44:45That was packed with wow factor.
00:44:47It was really mesmerizing from a distance.
00:44:50I actually really love the shape and the structure of the coat.
00:44:54Today was the day to bring the drama.
00:44:56Yeah.
00:44:57And you brought it.
00:44:58When I saw your avant-garde look from the other side of the vessel, I was wowed.
00:45:02Right.
00:45:03But up close, it does fall a little bit short in the execution.
00:45:07Whenever I had draped this, I really, really liked the shape.
00:45:10And whenever I started kind of tacking everything together and took it off,
00:45:13it did fit a little different than I wanted just because all the pins were holding it together.
00:45:18I also love the color.
00:45:19It's kind of Maisel pink, so it was good for me.
00:45:21But I actually wasn't completely sure about the dress underneath.
00:45:24So the dress I wanted to throw something, you know, ready to wear.
00:45:28I'm very attracted to the coat, but I would have rather you just put it with a pair of jeans.
00:45:32And it still would have been avant-garde and beautiful.
00:45:35The kitschiness of the plastic butterflies detracted from the sophistication of the entire outfit.
00:45:42Okay.
00:45:43Thank you, Brittany.
00:45:44Nancy, how would you say that this avant-garde look represents your point of view as a designer?
00:45:50I create pieces that don't exist.
00:45:53I'm just fearless and I try things.
00:45:55So it's just a look into my process.
00:45:58This feels dramatic.
00:46:00It moves so beautifully.
00:46:02I can tell it was inspired by the vessel.
00:46:04This is one of my favorites.
00:46:06Thank you so much.
00:46:07Not only did it really deliver on the challenge, but it really helped me better understand who you are as a designer.
00:46:14It was so architectural.
00:46:16It was like looking at a sculptural piece.
00:46:19This does feel reminiscent of the garment you created for the sheer challenge.
00:46:23But the way you manipulated the horse hair to kind of accomplish this three-dimensional shape.
00:46:29That was wearable art.
00:46:32Nancy, you know I'm a fan, but I am also a truth teller.
00:46:37I am not completely floored by this.
00:46:40Oh, it just felt like a black cloud.
00:46:44And I thought, what a missed opportunity in terms of color.
00:46:50If I am going to see something that is so avant-garde and I'm going to see it in this incredible building that captures the light, I would have wanted to celebrate that a little more.
00:47:03Nancy, thank you. Marquise, will you please tell us about your avant-garde look?
00:47:08When I first seen the vessel, to me it kind of reminded me of like a ship.
00:47:12So I wanted to do a silver vinyl jacket crop top and add some studded details just to bring in a little bit more of the street vibes that I like with some chain pants.
00:47:23How are they attached?
00:47:25There's a waistband that I hook with each chain and then I made a cuff at the bottom to make sure that it just gathers and falls correctly.
00:47:34They're heavy, right?
00:47:35They're a little bit heavy. It was definitely a workout for her.
00:47:38I do think the pants are really, really cool.
00:47:40I wish I could see the pants because they are really cool.
00:47:44The crop at the top, the proportions of the whole thing are just slightly off for me.
00:47:49I'm curious to see what happens if you take the jacket off.
00:47:55Oh, that's a jacket?
00:47:56I didn't know they were two pieces. I thought they were one piece.
00:47:58Wow.
00:47:59Nina got to the bottom of that real quick.
00:48:01The real feel that we needed.
00:48:02That's so cool.
00:48:03Without the jacket, it looks infinitely better.
00:48:06Yeah.
00:48:07You overcomplicate your process.
00:48:08I get into my head so much.
00:48:10And that's a common mistake. I've done that for many, many years when I started.
00:48:14You are incredibly talented, so I think restraint is good.
00:48:21Okay, Jeffrey, will you tell us about your avant-garde look?
00:48:26Avant-garde is something I do for a living.
00:48:29So I wanted to design something that was a little bit otherworldly, super regal and sexy.
00:48:36You know, I kind of got in my head, as always, about it and kind of got a really late start.
00:48:41But I'm happy with where it landed, and I hope you are too.
00:48:47Can I see it from the back?
00:48:49You can see through that latex.
00:48:51Mm-hmm.
00:48:52It lets light through.
00:48:53Normally, we see latex presented in this really skin-tight, severe way.
00:48:57Mm-hmm.
00:48:58And to see it presented with such fluidity felt poetic.
00:49:02I love that you played with this really bold shape on top and let it speak for itself with a more minimal bottom.
00:49:09And Jeffrey, the fact that you haven't worked in latex for the entire competition is tragic.
00:49:16That work is beautiful.
00:49:18Mm-hmm.
00:49:20I think of all the looks, it matched the location the best.
00:49:24But it was very Land Before Time.
00:49:28What?
00:49:29Do you know what I mean?
00:49:30No.
00:49:31Land Before Time?
00:49:32Land Before Time.
00:49:33I love that movie.
00:49:34But what about that is Land Before Time?
00:49:35Like a dinosaur?
00:49:36There's a full-on freaking gang up here.
00:49:40Get on, girls.
00:49:42It's like...
00:49:46Thank you, Jeffrey.
00:49:47All right, Sergio, will you tell us about your avant-garde look?
00:49:50I wanted to tell the story of female samurais in Japan.
00:49:55They actually fought in wars alongside the males.
00:49:58So I wanted to bring attention to this group of people that existed in history.
00:50:02And I think this is very indicative of an avant-garde version of who I am as a designer.
00:50:07I'm haunted by the image of your model in that elevator going up.
00:50:14This was theatrical.
00:50:15And your tailoring is pretty consistently a cut above the competition.
00:50:22Here's my dilemma with your work.
00:50:24You know fashion history.
00:50:26Yes.
00:50:27So you know John Galliano, Alexander McQueen.
00:50:31They have had similar inspirations in their past collections.
00:50:37I don't want to see any references.
00:50:39I've never seen Galliano do this kind of thing.
00:50:43But you've seen this hair and makeup.
00:50:45And you've seen him do this Asian collection as well as McQueen.
00:50:49And you use it.
00:50:50You know John Galliano, Alexander McQueen have had this Asian collection.
00:51:06I don't want to see any references.
00:51:08This is based off of samurai warriors.
00:51:11John Galliano's collection was based off of geishas.
00:51:14So maybe the face makeup is referenced.
00:51:16But this is not.
00:51:17I need to see you.
00:51:19What you, Sergio, will do without any references.
00:51:24Beyond that, talking about the clothes themselves.
00:51:26The craftsmanship cannot be denied.
00:51:28What you must now do is be a great thinker.
00:51:31Because that's going to start to cannibalize the craftsmanship.
00:51:34Great.
00:51:36Thank you, Sergio.
00:51:37Victoria, will you tell us about your avant-garde look?
00:51:40I had just a few goals that I had to achieve.
00:51:43The first one was to do something very feminine,
00:51:46but very powerful at the same time.
00:51:49The second one was to risk with something very much.
00:51:52And in my case was to make a fabric from maybe 1,000 pieces of faux leather that I stitched one by one.
00:51:59How did you possibly cut 1,000 squares?
00:52:02One was crazy.
00:52:03Literally crazy.
00:52:04Can I just feel it?
00:52:05I want to understand.
00:52:10Oh, interesting.
00:52:11I do think that the bronze of the vessel and the light choosing this champagne was so smart.
00:52:19Is there a strap on her left breast?
00:52:22Yes.
00:52:23Is it a total risk that when she sits down and puts her head down, her breast is going to pop out at dinner?
00:52:29Absolutely.
00:52:30And you know what?
00:52:32Very avant-garde, I say.
00:52:35Do you mind turning around so we can see the back of this garment?
00:52:38I'm so excited by the kind of juxtaposition of the structure of this jacket, but then also the fluidity of the fabric.
00:52:47Your hair, your coloring, you could tell that you felt regal.
00:52:50All right, I'm going to break up all the compliments.
00:52:52I personally didn't think that we needed the earring attachment.
00:52:56I think it slightly overcomplicated the design.
00:53:00This didn't live up to my wildest fantasy.
00:53:03I also agree with Elaine.
00:53:05But that being said, I really love the silhouette and the textures and I loved hearing about your process of creating it.
00:53:11Thank you so much.
00:53:12Thank you, designers.
00:53:13You guys can leave the runway.
00:53:15Good job, guys.
00:53:22We need to decide who is going to move on to make collections for New York Fashion Week.
00:53:39There isn't a single loser.
00:53:41No, for sure.
00:53:42In this roundup.
00:53:43Every designer that is left here in the game at this point is talented.
00:53:49All right, let's take a minute and talk about Jeffrey's look.
00:53:54His work on latex, I was like, whoa, just the engineering of that jacket blew me away.
00:54:01Some of the designers, as the weeks go by, kind of fall off the cliff.
00:54:06He hasn't.
00:54:07He's actually gained momentum.
00:54:10I was blown away.
00:54:12Watching that structure walk down the vessel was a real experience that I won't forget.
00:54:19He takes his design to another planet and that's what's exciting about fashion.
00:54:27But I do just want to talk about Victoria.
00:54:31I was really expecting from Victoria to see another crisscross, clingy something, maybe with a bit more volume.
00:54:38And then she comes out of left field with this romanticism and this fishhook breast hammock.
00:54:44And you're like, okay, that's avant-garde, too.
00:54:47I think it was unexpected and kind of weird, but in a really romantic, commercially viable way.
00:54:52I do love her, too.
00:54:53And I think she's shown us great work.
00:54:55But she didn't knock me dead.
00:54:56She didn't knock me dead.
00:54:57I am shocked that a latex panty moved you more than a breast hammock earring.
00:55:03If you walked in in this breast hammock, I would be like, Elaine, is your breast hanging from your earring?
00:55:08And you would say, yes, it is.
00:55:09And I would say, well, damn, that is pretty avant-garde.
00:55:12I would say, why?
00:55:15Who I will use my little soapbox to fight for is my girl, Nancy.
00:55:21This was unequivocally a true avant-garde showpiece.
00:55:26When I watched Nancy's look come down the vessel, I was floored.
00:55:30It screamed avant-garde to me.
00:55:32I loved watching it move.
00:55:34I've seen Nancy do this in the sheer challenge.
00:55:37But there is something there with Nancy, clearly.
00:55:42There is so much passion.
00:55:44So let's talk about Brittany.
00:55:48She delivers really elegant, cool, like things I want to buy.
00:55:55The two looks in addition to her avant-garde look that walked the runway today are the ones that made me believe in Brittany.
00:56:02But I think we can all agree that show-stopping kink jacket was avant-garde.
00:56:09But when you got up close.
00:56:12Boulain Monet.
00:56:13Boulain Monet.
00:56:14Clueless reference.
00:56:16She was smart.
00:56:17She picked the right fabric.
00:56:18But she couldn't carry it to the end.
00:56:20Oh, I want it so bad.
00:56:22I want to give a fighting chance for Marquise because Marquise has so much raw talent.
00:56:29He just needs the mentorship.
00:56:31But at the end of the day, Marquise's look did look like the Tin Man.
00:56:36I don't know.
00:56:37I think there's a promise to Marquise.
00:56:39And what could he present with a menswear collection?
00:56:43I feel like he will give us a moment that Project Runway has never had.
00:56:49Marquise at times has had exciting ideas and will have a killer streetwear business.
00:56:57I think that Sergio will give us the best runway.
00:57:02I'm very torn because I have problems with Sergio referencing the work of other designers.
00:57:12That being said, his ability to execute under really tight time constraints is a cut above everyone in this competition.
00:57:20It's true.
00:57:21What would you change?
00:57:22Oh, nothing.
00:57:23Nothing.
00:57:24I loved it.
00:57:25I think we all agree.
00:57:26We know our final four.
00:57:28Let's get them out here.
00:57:30Designers, we asked you to do something extraordinary to earn your way to New York Fashion Week.
00:57:47The six of you all deserve to create a collection, but unfortunately only four of you will get that opportunity.
00:57:54Jeffrey, congratulations.
00:58:09You are going on to the final runway.
00:58:12I really appreciate this.
00:58:13It means the world to me.
00:58:14I am so proud right now.
00:58:16You really showed up and showed out today.
00:58:18There is a real nervousness and a self-doubt to you.
00:58:23And that's okay, as long as your work is loud and confident.
00:58:29I want you to think very streamlined, very fresh, very sophisticated.
00:58:34I will.
00:58:35I will.
00:58:36Congratulations.
00:58:37Thank you so much.
00:58:40Victoria.
00:58:43You are in.
00:58:44You are one of the final four.
00:58:46Victoria, my advice to you is don't just think about the one woman you've been designing for to date.
00:58:56Think about all of the women that want to be wearing your designs when you create your collection.
00:59:01I promise that I will not disappoint.
00:59:03Nancy.
00:59:04Nancy.
00:59:05You are in.
00:59:06You will get the chance to make your dream collection.
00:59:11You got a girlfriend.
00:59:12Stand up.
00:59:13Come on.
00:59:14You represent a second shot at living your biggest dream.
00:59:16I just hope that you keep in mind all of the things that we've shared with you.
00:59:34No more oversized, ill-fitting garments.
00:59:39Please, Nancy, make it fit.
00:59:41I can't wait.
00:59:45Brittany, Sergio, and Marquise, we wish we could see all of your shows.
00:59:54But I'm sad to say, only one of you will be in, and two of you will be out.
01:00:07Brittany.
01:00:08I'm sorry.
01:00:09You are out.
01:00:11Okay.
01:00:12Thank you guys very much.
01:00:15Brittany, I know and everybody here knows that you are a great designer.
01:00:23I saw a strength in the way that you carried yourself, and a poise and a grace, and what
01:00:30a joy it has been to be let into your talent.
01:00:38I just, I really appreciate this so much, being here.
01:00:50I definitely didn't think I was going to go home.
01:00:52I was so close.
01:00:53Do I feel like none of the people that are in the top four deserve it?
01:00:58Not necessarily.
01:00:59But do I feel like I deserve it more?
01:01:01Most definitely.
01:01:11Sergio.
01:01:16Congratulations.
01:01:17You are also in.
01:01:18You are going to New York Fashion Week.
01:01:24I'm sorry, Marquise.
01:01:26You are out.
01:01:29Marquise, it really pains me to see you go home today.
01:01:34You have blossomed in this competition, and you should be really proud of your performance.
01:01:39I just thank all of you.
01:01:40Like, for real.
01:01:41It's been a blessing.
01:01:42Marquise, thank you for being here.
01:01:44You can leave the runway.
01:01:45I'm going self-taught.
01:01:46Being a self-taught designer, I do feel like I've made it to a phenomenal standpoint within
01:01:51this competition, showing everybody what I can do.
01:01:56Hey, love.
01:01:57Sergio, we know you have the talent.
01:02:10Don't hide behind excuses or other people's work.
01:02:14Okay.
01:02:15Show us what you can do.
01:02:17It's your work that I want to see.
01:02:19Thank you, Nina.
01:02:20Is everyone happy?
01:02:21Congratulations.
01:02:22You are the final four.
01:02:26Come on, Nancy.
01:02:27You guys are going to each be headed home to create a 10-piece collection for New York Fashion
01:02:35Week.
01:02:36You'll have $10,000 and five months to pull it all together.
01:02:40Get out of here, go celebrate, and congratulations.
01:02:49I am not sleeping anymore.
01:02:50No.
01:02:53Good job, final four.
01:02:57Hello.
01:02:58Hey.
01:02:59Really harsh.
01:03:00Brittany, Marquise, you had amazing moments here.
01:03:04Wins, comebacks.
01:03:06You're both going to do amazing things.
01:03:09I mean, Marquise, I'm ready for men's.
01:03:11I need it all.
01:03:12I got you.
01:03:13And Brittany, you made amazing pieces.
01:03:15There was so much I personally really loved, so I know you're going to do amazing things.
01:03:19Yeah.
01:03:20I'm going to send you guys to the workroom, clean up your space, say goodbye.
01:03:23I'm proud of you.
01:03:25Being this close from having that dream happen, it definitely is a bummer, but I'm definitely
01:03:31going to continue to grow, do harder things, put my all into my garments, and just continue
01:03:37to be Marquise Foster.
01:03:38You're going to be amazing.
01:03:40Later, y'all.
01:03:41Being in this competition, it's allowed me to kind of come into my own and be just reassured
01:03:46that I am on the right path and I'm doing the right thing.
01:03:50Eventually, I will make it to Fashion Week.
01:03:53It just may be a longer road to get there.
01:03:56You do the honors.
01:03:57Right.
01:03:58Let's celebrate.
01:03:59Ladies.
01:04:00Thank you so much, Christian.
01:04:01You're amazing, right?
01:04:02Thanks for all of your good critiques and stuff.
01:04:03You saved my ass on a bunch of stuff.
01:04:04I mean, God.
01:04:05You stress me out so much.
01:04:06You really do.
01:04:07But look what happened.
01:04:08Congratulations, guys.
01:04:09Thanks, Christian.
01:04:10Drink and sleep.
01:04:11Yes.
01:04:12I'll see you soon.
01:04:13Bye, Christian.
01:04:14Bye.
01:04:15Bye, Christian.
01:04:16Bye.
01:04:17Next time on Project Lemon.
01:04:18The designers have all had about five months to work and this is when it gets really exciting.
01:04:32Here you go.
01:04:33There's so much done.
01:04:34I have a lot less than I was hoping.
01:04:36My God, I'm scared.
01:04:38And it's fermented, so it really smells.
01:04:41We truly believe each of you has the potential to make real impact.
01:04:47So we're throwing out the rule book.
01:04:49Oh, yeah.
01:04:51It's like Chewbacca couture.
01:04:53Interesting.
01:04:54Arms?
01:04:55I don't know.
01:04:56I don't think you should show that.
01:04:57You're out of control.
01:04:58What's the problem?
01:04:59I don't want to go home.
01:05:00Let the games begin.
01:05:03You've got new, bold, innovative ideas.
01:05:06That is a show-stopping piece.
01:05:08Make it you and make it modern.
01:05:10But this is not either.
