00:00High noon, Jones and Keith live from Gillette Stadium on WEI.
00:04We're presented by McFarlane Energy, the heating, cooling, and bioheat delivery pros
00:08that Eastern Mass and all of Cape Cod depend on.
00:11McFarlaneenergy.com, Patriots first team offense down here inside the five,
00:16running a few different plays.
00:17You just heard Vrabel talking about Ramondre Stevenson.
00:19He just scooted into the end zone.
00:21A little play action here from the Pats.
00:22Mack Holland's out of bounds.
00:24In the back of the end zone.
00:25Completely out of bounds.
00:25Yeah, like not even close.
00:27His entire body was out of bounds.
00:28Who was on coverage there, Jones, Marcus Jones?
00:30Yep, Marcus Jones was.
00:31Tighten coverage there.
00:32And May might have gotten sacked on that anyway.
00:34Yeah, that's a good point.
00:35He had to step up out of some pressure.
00:36So, yeah, not the prettiest play there, despite the reaction you heard from the crowd.
00:40Holland's certainly out of bounds.
00:42I would connect Ramondre Stevenson's fumble on Friday night, Keith,
00:46to what we're seeing unfold here today on Day 10 in pads.
00:49Should be a lighter day tomorrow.
00:50Joint practices on Wednesday, and then a preseason game on Friday against the Commanders.
00:55Because Travion Henderson has a monster day right after Stevenson put one on the ground on Friday.
01:00I would connect those two dots.
01:01100%.
01:02And we know how Josh McDaniels likes to throw to the running back.
01:04There's been a lot of them over the history of the Patriots.
01:07And Henderson seems like out of the three guys, not that Gibson can.
01:11I mean, Gibson was a college receiver, for God's sakes.
01:14But Henderson just today has made a bunch of highlight reel plays.
01:17Drake May and him seem to have a pretty good connection.
01:20So, that could only lead to more and more playing time.
01:23May just tried Steph Diggs in the near side corner of the end zone here.
01:26They're coming in our direction.
01:28Yeah, that's where the tree's in the way.
01:29Yeah, he was definitely out of bounds, though.
01:31That was DJ James, whose name has popped up a lot, and Jabril Peppers.
01:34Maybe keep it in bounds.
01:35High coverage on Diggs.
01:36Yeah, it's two pass plays out of bounds from the first team offense here.
01:40Who is this?
01:41This is May with Pop and Booty.
01:43Who's off to the other side?
01:44Diggs.
01:45Yep, Diggs.
01:46Ooh, that one deflected.
01:47Looks like he had Pop Douglas with a step.
01:50So, first team offense struggling down here at the five,
01:52and now May's coming off the field, and Dobbs in the second unit going to come in.
01:55Anyway, to continue that thought, the biggest day for Henderson,
01:59and it's funny because we said that.
02:00We were just saying, halfway through practice, we're like,
02:02boy, stay tuned for joint practices, stay tuned for the preseason game.
02:06Maybe Henderson will start to flash.
02:08He had two touchdowns on Will Roots in the far side corner of the end zone,
02:12one where he probably caught it going in at the two or three,
02:14the other he caught it in the corner of the end zone.
02:15Toe tap, great hands catch.
02:18He has flashed quite a bit today.
02:20He had a really good run.
02:21Now, it's hard to gauge the running here because, you know,
02:24there's no real break tackles.
02:25Guys will let up on defense once they get there.
02:27But there was one play to the left that was blocked pretty well.
02:30He picked up a bunch of yards.
02:31So, yeah, he's been kind of rolling.
02:34And I look more, almost as anything else, just reps.
02:37And he's getting a lot of reps.
02:38Just like it's a good sign for...
02:39With May.
02:40With May.
02:41Yeah, yeah, right.
02:41Like, with...
02:42Like, Kayshawn Booty is getting a lot of reps with May.
02:45Like, Kayshawn Booty, I don't think, takes any reps, really, with Dobbs.
02:49Every once in a while, you might see, just because of all the receivers,
02:51they'll get them some work with the second unit.
02:53But for the most part, it's like Chisholm, Baker, and Polk with Dobbs.
02:58And then the other guys are kind of rotating through with Drake May.
03:00Well, and right now, and Chisholm's another name we said who hasn't flashed a lot.
03:03Chisholm had a great catch in the corner of the end zone going the other way, too.
03:06So we called a couple of guys out, and they've responded.
03:09But, right, Mac Hollins is with Dobbs right now.
03:11And Hollins is getting a lot of work with May.
03:12The last time we saw them for a walkthrough, it was just a walkthrough, on Thursday.
03:17But Hollins is out there.
03:18He's jogging off now.
03:19But, like, do you remember the last rep?
03:21And obviously, we're not seeing every single thing, but...
03:24This is Henderson with Dobbs, right?
03:26So Henderson's coming in with Dobbs now.
03:27The last rep, what?
03:28That Polk or Baker got with Drake May.
03:31I don't think Polk's ever been out there with Drake May.
03:33Yeah, it's not much if he has been out there.
03:35So Henderson's on the field now.
03:37It's been a loud practice for him.
03:39And, again, I would connect it to Ramondre Stevenson putting the ball on the ground on Friday night
03:44in a live scrimmage in the stadium.
03:46I think Dobbs would have been dragged down on that one.
03:48That would be a sack.
03:48But that was a catch in the end zone for the second unit offense.
03:52Who's 88?
03:53Michael Irvin.
03:55Is that Jaheem Bell, maybe?
03:5688 is Jaheem Bell.
03:57Yes.
03:57Got that.
03:58Got a thumbs up in the back.
03:59Diving in.
04:00So, no, I would say a good day for Henderson.
04:02First team offense was not great down here for this drill, at least in their first set
04:07of reps.
04:07We'll see how it goes after that.
04:08Patriots did lose one player earlier today.
04:10Marcellus Dial carted off.
04:12Carlton Davis is out here briefly, even though Vrabel told us he probably wouldn't be out
04:16here.
04:16Yeah, he didn't really do anything with the team.
04:18But he was out here in uniform.
04:19He went through a few cases with coaches.
04:21Yeah.
04:21Yeah.
04:21Getting into his backpedal with Marcus Jones and a coach.
04:24Yep.
04:24Is what he was doing earlier today.
04:26Vrabel told us not to expect him for joint practices.
04:29And likely even the preseason game on Friday against the Commanders.
04:34I think it would say, oh, that was, oh, I don't know why Baker had it poked out.
04:38That's another one that would have been a sack, probably.
04:40But either way, yeah, Baker, that was just a drop.
04:43Because he's been looking pretty good, you know, grading on a curve with the second unit.
04:47But he's made more plays than anybody else.
04:49You said this earlier.
04:49Javon Baker's been the most noticeable guy in that second unit.
04:52I think we're going to get the first team offense for one more chunk of plays down here.
04:56Matt Collins' undershirt.
04:59The red?
05:00It's all ripped up.
05:02He looks like.
05:02Oh, is it?
05:03He looks like an old, like, wrestler or something going to the ring.
05:05It's all.
05:06So I didn't notice that.
05:06It's red and it hangs way down.
05:08Is it all ripped up?
05:09It looks like he's playing, like, flag football.
05:10So basically it's connected on the top.
05:12You have those binocs, Keef.
05:13I do.
05:14Oh, you're right, though.
05:15Here's Hollins with May.
05:16It's hilarious.
05:16The first team offense.
05:17Yeah.
05:18That shirt is hilarious.
05:19It's like what you'd see, like, a wrestler wearing to the ring.
05:21Oh, yeah.
05:22It is all.
05:22Like the old Usos.
05:24It is all ripped up.
05:25Yeah.
05:26Okay.
05:27Just a run into nothing.
05:28But I would say today the first unit offense,
05:30at least when they've been down here by the goal line,
05:31has not made much happen, at least in that initial spin.
05:35We'll keep you up to speed on what's going on here today.
05:37And it's on the heels of on Friday,
05:38not just Stephenson putting the ball on the ground.
05:40Drake May had his first two picks of training camp.
05:42And you heard Vrabel talking about that.
05:44There's the good, the bad, and the crap that gets you beat.
05:46The turnovers are the crap that's going to get you beat.
05:48Oh, yeah.
05:48Yeah, bad day for the offense all around.
05:51Obviously they split them up, right?
05:52So Drake May didn't have all of his receivers.
05:54And, you know, Josh Dobbs had whatever was picked over there
05:57by the coaching staff.
05:58But, yeah, it was like 50% completions, I think it was,
06:01for Drake May.
06:02Two picks.
06:03Now, I mean, he straight up lost to Josh Dobbs,
06:06which I don't need to put, like, that much stock in.
06:07Yeah, but the scoring's all wonky, so they might score more on defense.
06:10But, like, I'd expect Drake May to blow out Josh.
06:12We've watched Josh Dobbs.
06:13I would expect his team to destroy Josh Dobbs' team, and he lost.
06:17But I think they got points for those picks.
06:19They got points for, like, the, I think, Ramondre fumbled.
06:22So there was a weird scoring system.
06:25It wasn't, like, just touchdowns and field goals.
06:26There's other ways to do it.
06:27But I get your point.
06:29And the picks are bad plays by May.
06:31So I think those are directly giving points.
06:33Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:33Yeah, right.
06:34But those also could have been, maybe Diggs could have caught one pass.
06:38Maybe Kyle Williams went the wrong route.
06:40That's true.
06:40Fair point.
06:41They go down as interceptions, so nobody's going to do that
06:44for every quarterback in the league.
06:46But there might be ways that you could sort of talk it up.
06:49And you know what?
06:50Honestly, like, to spin it positive.
06:51There's another out-of-bounds play, by the way.
06:53May to Booty.
06:53That was D.J. James again.
06:55D.J. James is nice.
06:56He flashes a lot.
06:57Yeah.
06:57He flashes a lot.
06:58And again, guys who flash a lot, not a flasher joke,
07:01but Caleb on Chasen, not out here today.
07:04Oh, is he in absence today?
07:05I don't think he's out there today.
07:06Oh, I missed that.
07:07So an easier job for the offensive line today
07:09because those guys are getting abused by him on camp.
07:12This is a good point.
07:13I guess I meant what I was looking at.
07:14I don't think he was out there.
07:15That's the first name that I missed today.
07:16I think he was...
07:17Future Pro Bowler?
07:19Yeah.
07:19Caleb on Chasen.
07:20If he got every rep against Will Campbell in real-life games,
07:23live games, yeah, you're right, in absentee.
07:24He's not there, right?
07:25He's not out there, correct.
07:26Their job has been a little bit easier.
07:28A little two-back set here.
07:30Yeah, I don't know how many more reps out of May we're going to get here.
07:32He's got this one.
07:33Down inside the 10.
07:34Nobody's open.
07:35He's doing a lot of time.
07:37This is like the Tennessee play.
07:39It was Stevenson.
07:40He's out of bounds again.
07:40Every throw is out of bounds.
07:42What is happening?
07:42There's nowhere to throw.
07:43And remember, you could be like,
07:45oh, the Patriots defense is supposed to be really good?
07:47Maybe.
07:48Caleb on Chasen, who's been kind of a star.
07:50That was the last play for May, I would wager, is not out there.
07:53He's been a star of training camp anyway.
07:54I wouldn't expect much when the games start.
07:56No Gonzo, no Davis.
07:57So you're going against DJ James?
07:59Yeah, come on now.
08:00Who was drafted by the Seahawks in cut?
08:02You're going against, I mean, who else is even...
08:04Alex Austin, double A?
08:05Not even Marcel A?
08:07Exactly.
08:07And they're shutting down the first-team offense down here inside the 10.
08:11That's probably not a great sign for them, too.
08:13You said earlier, though, Keith, as Dobbs gets out there with the second-team offense,
08:16you said earlier, out of all the turnovers on Friday, and there were a lot of them,
08:20inside the stadium for a scrimmage, you're far more concerned with the Stevenson fumble
08:24than anything from May.
08:26Yeah, I mean, I expect young quarterbacks to throw picks.
08:28Obviously, I hope that number comes down year over year.
08:31And we just sort of talked about maybe the explanations for the two, right?
08:34Like, maybe Diggs should have caught it.
08:36Maybe Kyle Williams possibly ran the wrong route or whatever.
08:39There's a miscommunication those guys can kind of figure out.
08:41If you're a running back fumbling, like, you're just fumbling.
08:43And that was your biggest issue last year.
08:45Seven fumbles, which was more than any other non-quarterback in the NFL.
08:51You just couldn't rely on them.
08:52Like, two years ago, Ramondre Stevenson, his second year in the league,
08:56thousand-yard runner, ran for five yards to carry, and was a factor in the pass game.
09:01And you're like, all right, this guy's going to be something.
09:04The Patriots felt that way, too.
09:05They signed him to a big extension.
09:07He's one of the higher-paid running backs in the league.
09:10And if he's dropping the ball, it wasn't even, like, full contact either.
09:14Nope, that's a good point.
09:14But, like, fumbling there, like, what is that going to mean for once the season gets going,
09:18once the joint practice is on Wednesday, preseason game coming up?
09:22And if you can't rely on the guy, like, this is going to be one of those teams.
09:25Vrabel had the funny line earlier today about they can't take any excessive celebration penalties.
09:31Like, they're not good enough to cause ourselves 15 yards.
09:33You're certainly not good enough to be fumbling the ball around.
09:35Nope.
09:36And so, Ramondre Stevenson, who had seven fumbles last year, is back to that.
09:41You've got to go to Henderson.
09:42You've got to go to Gibson.
09:43You can't afford to have him out there.
09:44Well, and again, that would be the big story today, is that Henderson had a monster day, rather,
09:50on what's been, I think, a relatively quiet camp.
09:52Here's what I'd say about all the rookies.
09:54They have all had flash days, even Campbell.
09:56Yeah.
09:57And we've given Campbell a lot of flack.
09:58I don't think he's been super noticeable today, which I think is good.
10:01I think that means he's probably having one of his stronger days in full pads.
10:04And I think, to his credit, and Beatrider said this early in the process,
10:08he's been better in pads than out, right?
10:10Like, when you saw him really struggling late last week, that was a day where they got out of the pads.
10:16So, I think he's been more impactful those days.
10:19He's had flash days.
10:20Jared Wilson has had flash days.
10:22Kyle Williams, way back on day one, had the catch over Gonzo.
10:25You have Henderson, who right on cue is scooting into the end zone on a little pitch play from Dobbs.
10:29Like, this has been, by far, his most noticeable and best day.
10:33Yeah.
10:33And I would say about the rookie class, that's probably a good sign.
10:36I mean, they're not just invisible out there every day like last year's class.
10:40Although, maybe that's unfair.
10:41Polk had some flash days last year.
10:44I guess.
10:44But that soured pretty quickly.
10:46And then it was more them holding Drake May back, right?
10:49Because that should be your guy that you're focused on for the rookie class.
10:52No, but I would say, like, this year, you have a chance for a number of impact players because they're at positions of need in a lot of cases.
11:02And the way they've looked so far, they're going to get the benefit of the doubt.
11:05Obviously, Will Campbell's your starting left tackle until something happens there.
11:09Henderson is going to get a lot of playing time, not whether he's a starter or not, whatever.
11:13He should be out there.
11:15Kyle Williams is definitely going to make the team and could possibly work in there.
11:21Like, I think he's probably fifth on the depth chart.
11:24I do, too.
11:24But he has that speed element where maybe you at least see him.
11:27Like, I don't know if he's going to be a healthy scratch.
11:28And if you want to be fair, he was a mixed bag in the scrimmage on Friday.
11:31He had a miscommunication with May, but he also had a catch off a double pass, a trick play.
11:35But also, where you feel pretty good about it is you might have your starting left guard in Jared Wilson, your other third round pick.
11:42So if you have two starting linemen, a running back who factors in, a wide receiver who factors in,
11:46we'll see Craig Woodson, the eraser in the fourth round.
11:49Maybe he plays a little bit.
11:51Yeah, he, Chisholm caught a touchdown over him in the one-on-one drills earlier.
11:56Hopefully your kicker is the guy you drafted.
11:58So, like, suddenly you could have a lot of guys that are out there on the field from this class.
12:01By the way, this is a longer practice.
12:04Henry just tried to one-hand one and dropped it.
12:06It looked like the throw was a little in front of him from May.
12:08I would have lost my wager.
12:09I said, I would have wagered that that last rep from May was going to be the last one.
12:13I would have lost that wager.
12:15Where are they putting this ball?
12:1625?
12:16Yeah, 25.
12:17So they've been inside the 10.
12:18They were at, like, the 5, and then it looked like the 8.
12:21For a few series of reps, now they're out at the 25.
12:24So a little more room for the offense to operate.
12:26That was a tighter window throw that looked like May missed.
12:28Henry, you don't see drop a lot of those.
12:31He kind of had one hand out in front of him that it deflected off of.
12:34So right now, you guys say this is Marcus Bryant, who's been getting a lot of right tackle snaps.
12:38Morgan Moses was out there that they must just be managing him.
12:41Well, they've been doing that all camp.
12:42But it's the first time we've seen Bryant out there.
12:44A lot of Bryant in right tackle.
12:45So you have three rookies right now on the offensive line.
12:48Yep.
12:48May take it off on a scramble.
12:49Probably would have been dragged down by Landry.
12:51Or touchdown.
12:53If that were – he might have been dragged down before it, but even taken off, Landry was right on his heels there.
12:58As he was trying to scamper out.
12:59First-team offense, they're moving this ball to the 15 now, Keith.
13:02First-down run, that's what it sounds like to me.
13:04I guess that's why.
13:05You had him in the end zone.
13:06I do.
13:06They marked him down at the 15.
13:07First-team offense is doing squat right now.
13:09Yeah, they're not doing much.
13:10I like Landry, though.
13:12I've liked him so far in camp.
13:13He's a little bit smaller than I thought he was going to be, but, like, whatever.
13:15Like, there's a lot of smaller pass rushers that have a lot of success in the league.
13:18But, like, I think – you know, maybe it's just the number two.
13:21Maybe he looks good.
13:22Single digits are coming from the outside there.
13:24But, you know, I like that sounding more now than even at the time.
13:28Okay.
13:29Let's see what they do here.
13:30No, and I agree.
13:31Landry has – I mean, him and Chasen have been making some plays.
13:34There's Diggs with a little out.
13:36All right.
13:36Positive yards there.
13:37Five yards.
13:39Yeah, they're moving the ball, though, Joe.
13:40What are you going to do?
13:41They're skipping away at it.
13:42They're scooting the way up.
13:44Yeah, I would say the headline, again, is the first-team offense.
13:47And I like what I saw out of Henderson in some of the one-on-one drills.
13:50He's been out here with Dobbs when they've been going through some of these actual full-team 11-on-11s.
13:55Yeah.
13:57But, yeah.
13:57They've been stymied.
13:58Is that what you're saying?
13:59Stymied is a good word for it.
13:59The offense has been a little bit stymied.
14:01And, again, I'll reiterate –
14:02Kyle Williams out there now.
14:03No Gonzo.
14:05No Carlton Davis.
14:06No Caleb on Chasen out there.
14:08So that's tough to be getting stymied on all of this.
14:11Let's see if him and Kyle Williams can get on the same page here.
14:13Let's go.
14:14Drake May drops back.
14:15Looks to his right.
14:16Kyle Williams deflected.
14:18DJ James broke it up.
14:19DJ James is a killer.
14:20James is everywhere.
14:21DJ James is a nice player.
14:22I don't know.
14:23Well, I don't know if he is or not, but he's nice against this offense.
14:26Well, so this is what we're going to see on Wednesday.
14:27Does he have some success against Jaden Daniels?
14:29Then we'll feel a lot better.
14:31If Jaden Daniels just mows down this defense, they're like, okay.
14:34That's a good point.
14:35You're going to feel as strong.
14:35If Jaden Daniels is picking on DJ James because he's your top corner right now.
14:39It's all right.
14:40Again, he was a sixth-round pick by –
14:41I didn't even know who he was.
14:43He was on the Patriots practice squad all last year.
14:45Yeah, well, he learned a lot.
14:46Jerome Mayo and only Wolf should have got the guy on the field last year, for God's sake.
14:49He mismanished the whole roster last year.
14:50He was a Seattle Seahawks draft pick, sixth-round pick a year ago, on the practice squad.
14:54He keeps making plays over and over again.
14:56There's a gain of two, maybe, to Ramondre.
14:59Checking down to Ramondre.
15:00A little swing pass to Ramondre.
15:02Yeah, first-team offense not doing anything.
15:03No, it's underwhelming, which is –
15:06I mean, they are going up against the steel curtain, though, so you can start to understand.
15:11So, again, this is a longer practice.
15:13I think tomorrow is going to be real light.
15:15Reese wrote about this earlier today.
15:16Probably.
15:17Tomorrow will be real light going into the joint practices on Wednesday.
15:19That's a day to have circled, where if Drake may have a –
15:23well, he had a crummy scrimmage.
15:24I don't think they've had a good day today.
15:25I don't know what the numbers are going to say.
15:27I feel like there's probably some completions.
15:29Yeah.
15:29But I don't think he's had a good day.
15:31So, now they're actually, like, you know, moving the ball and marking it where they move it to.
15:34Prior to that, when they were just lined up on the five –
15:36Every play was out of the back of the end zone.
15:38Everybody's running out of bounds.
15:39Yeah.
15:40I don't really get that.
15:42And they just whistled something.
15:43I don't know.
15:44Yeah, people called a whistle, but they're huddling back up.
15:46Okay.
15:46So, I don't know if they're going to move the football back there.
15:48But, yeah, it has not been a good go for the first-team offense.
15:50But I will say this, if they're out there, joint practices, like you just said, Jaden Daniels on DJ James, if he's out there lighting up the commanders –
15:58Yeah, you feel a lot better about it.
15:59Well, then I'll throw out the scrimmage and I'll throw out today.
16:01And there's been no turnovers today from Drake May, whether it's a fumble put on the ground like we've seen at training camp or the picks we saw in the stadium on Friday night in the scrimmage.
16:09There's been no turnovers, but it hasn't been good.
16:12But, again, a long practice today.
16:14This is fourth down.
16:15Let's see if they can punch it in here.
16:16Oh, this is for all the marbles.
16:17Let's see if they can punch it in here, guys.
16:18Can they get a first down?
16:19Let's make a play.
16:20I think they can get a first down.
16:21Okay.
16:21They can't get a first?
16:22Let's give this one.
16:23This one gets in the end zone.
16:24Drake just chucked that away.
16:25Oh, booty.
16:26Oh, booty with a great catch.
16:28But I don't know.
16:28I think he's in.
16:29DJ James says he's out.
16:30Are they saying he's in?
16:31I think you're wrong.
16:31For sure got one foot in.
16:33I think you're wrong, DJ James.
16:34Oh, he doesn't like it.
16:34He's saying, no, no, no.
16:35Yeah.
16:36They're saying, yes, yes, yes.
16:37I thought they chucked that away.
16:38No, booty.
16:39I mean, you just throw it near that guy.
16:41He's going to pull it in.
16:41I don't have the binocs like Keith.
16:43Yeah, I got him.
16:43So, I don't care.
16:45I mean, it doesn't improve my eyesight.
16:46My eyesight's still bad.
16:47It's just like it's a little bit closer.
16:49My eyesight, as we've established, is poor.
16:51I think that was a good catch, though.
16:53I think booty, he definitely caught it.
16:54And I think he got both feet in.
16:56They put the replays up here anywhere?
16:58Where are they going to show that?
17:00That's a good question.
