00:00A lot of good juice around Drake May, according to Peter Schrager on McAfee yesterday.
00:05We've seen it firsthand, all the good juice for Drake May.
00:10It's going to be a sweaty day.
00:12It's going to be real sweaty, but that's fine.
00:14I'm going to rise above it.
00:15I'm not going to let that.
00:16You're already rising above it.
00:17What do you mean you're going to rise above it?
00:19I'm going to continue to rise above it.
00:21Did the Twitch chat bully you into taking off your little sweat rag there?
00:24What do you call it?
00:24I keep forgetting the name of it.
00:25A cool rag?
00:26A cool towel.
00:26Your cool towel.
00:27A cool towel.
00:27No, no, no.
00:28They bully you out of it?
00:29I'm saving it.
00:30No, I haven't soaked it in ice water yet.
00:32I'm going to do that probably around 11, then come back out here and put it on my head like I did before.
00:36That's the way to do it.
00:37Lower the body temperature like a lizard, and then I'll be in good shape.
00:41And the rest of the day, I'll be fine.
00:43I'll get you an update on Drake May momentarily.
00:45Here's the full attendance.
00:46I finally was able to go through the full roster.
00:48Did you do that during the break?
00:49That was good stuff.
00:50Well, you can never be too sure until they're really all out there stretching.
00:53You see guys coming and going off the field.
00:55So me and Mike Reese are reporting that Austin Hooper is out here.
00:59Who?
00:59Which indicates he's off the PUP list.
01:01Another target for Drake May.
01:03Me and Andrew Callahan are both reporting that there's no Gonzo out there or Carlton Davis today.
01:10Yeah, this is not a great...
01:11Me and Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald can both report that.
01:14So what was supposed to be a strength of the team, your cornerback group, again, they're out there.
01:19It's now the fourth mispractice for Carlton Davis.
01:21They're down he and Gonzo in the cornerback room, which yesterday meant you had Alex Austin, Marcus Jones, and Marcellus Dial.
01:29Your guy.
01:29Well, Dial did make a nice play.
01:31He celebrated it, which I enjoy.
01:33You know, you celebrate your successes in life.
01:36Not just on the football field, Jones.
01:37You should be allowed to do that.
01:38You should.
01:40Yeah, no.
01:40Well, it goes from being a strength of the team to a weakness.
01:43But that happens with any team, right?
01:45That's not specific to the Patriots.
01:46If you told me the Buffalo Bills lost their top two corners at camp, you'd be like, all right, well, they're not as good.
01:52And so now that's what you're dealing with.
01:54But I look at it another step further because even if those two guys are ready to go for the regular season, and fingers crossed that they are,
02:00it's just several practices where Steph Diggs, Kyle Williams, Kayshawn Booty don't get to go up against tougher competition.
02:07It's a great point.
02:07It's a great point.
02:08And look, we don't even know what Davis is dealing with.
02:10No, we don't.
02:11So we assume we know what Christian can say.
02:14It looked like a hamstring yesterday.
02:15The beat writers are all calling it a left leg injury.
02:18It's what it looked like.
02:19So I think we have a good idea what happened to Gonzo because it happened in front of us.
02:22Yeah.
02:22Davis?
02:23It was NFI.
02:24It was away from the facility.
02:25We don't even know what was going on with Carlton Davis.
02:26Yeah.
02:27And so, you know, is it a soft tissue thing?
02:29Is it the same kind of thing that's going to bark at Gonzalez like we were talking about?
02:33I think that's a bad place to start.
02:34It doesn't mean they won't be ready week one.
02:36It doesn't mean they can't be the best cornerback duo in football, which we think they might be.
02:39Yeah.
02:40It just means they're off to a bad start.
02:42Mark Daniels had a few notes on the roster.
02:45No Tavai out there as well.
02:47That's a shame.
02:48He says no Josh Farmer.
02:49This is the first one I want to dispute.
02:51Okay.
02:52Now we're talking.
02:53Josh Farmer is here.
02:54Is he?
02:55Is he on the field?
02:56He's on a side field.
02:57He is not on either of the two main fields.
02:58Well, that's a great question, Keefe.
03:00But we can tell you with confidence, Josh Farmer, the rookie at Florida State, is here.
03:06What's he up to and why is he not out there with the rest of the team?
03:08I don't know, but he's here.
03:09Let me paint the picture, Jones.
03:10We are high above.
03:12We're not on the top floor of the stadium.
03:14We're up there, though.
03:15Second high.
03:16So we're high above.
03:17We might have been higher than Crafts Helicopter yesterday.
03:19We're up there.
03:20Yeah.
03:22We're in the crow's nest.
03:23We are.
03:23Yes.
03:23We're in the crow's nest.
03:24And so we're looking down on the two practice fields.
03:26We are also looking down on the helipad, which has been discussed quite a bit during training
03:30camps this year and years past.
03:33All of a sudden, we noticed that there was a player by the helipad, which is not the field.
03:39He kind of looked lost.
03:40He looked like maybe he forgot where the actual practice fields were.
03:43Because the stadium and where the locker room is, it kind of spits right out onto the field.
03:48You have to go another way around a fence to get over to the helicopter pad.
03:53So I don't know.
03:54It's a bit of a mystery, but we did spot a player wandering around as though he was lost.
03:57Yeah.
03:58So there is that.
03:58So he's here.
03:59I would, again, we take official attendance on this show.
04:03No doubt.
04:03We can report.
04:04He's here.
04:04What's he doing?
04:05And, you know, whether he's cleared to go today, I have no idea.
04:09Meanwhile, that was a bullish answer from Pete Schrager, good info guy, on McAfee
04:14yesterday about Drake May.
04:15The buzz is real about a year or two leap, Keith.
04:18Yeah.
04:18I mean, and that's positive.
04:20And I think overall he has looked good.
04:22Like, I think obviously, you know, a turnover here or there or whatever, but it's been several
04:26days of practice so far.
04:28I think he's looked good.
04:29There's been times where we've questioned the offensive line.
04:32Clearly, that's how we started the show.
04:34There's been a few drops by some of his receivers.
04:37But Drake May himself, I would say, arrow pointing up, you know, there was questions in OTAs.
04:43Remember, like back in OTAs, there was a couple of sloppy practices, one where he didn't complete
04:47a very high percentage of passes.
04:48And we're like, all right, well, it's a place to build off of.
04:51And now since then, I would say he's been pretty good, right?
04:54Like, I don't think there's been a day where we've been like, oh, bad day for Drake May.
04:57It's been a bad day for some of the backup quarterbacks.
04:59It's been a bad day for some of the offensive linemen.
05:02It's been just sort of an average day for a handful of players.
05:05I would say overall Drake May has been one of their best players day in and day out.
05:09So, Callahan tabulated the numbers through five practices.
05:13It's day six today.
05:14Jones and Keefe in Foxborough for Patriots training camp.
05:17Pads are on.
05:18We're brought to you by McFarlane Energy, as we have been throughout training camp.
05:21Drake May is 35 for 47.
05:23That is, by my math, 74% completion percentage.
05:27Pretty high.
05:27That's good.
05:28There was only one day, and it was Saturday.
05:30We weren't in attendance for it, where he really pushed the ball downfield.
05:32Yesterday, it was only five out of six.
05:34And I say only, meaning not a ton of attempts.
05:36They didn't throw much yesterday.
05:37It was a heavy run practice.
05:39He has, by Callahan's tabulations, Keefe, taken 15 would-be sacks in training camp.
05:46Yikes.
05:46They're going up against the steel curtain, so it makes sense.
05:49That's true.
05:50Keon White and Caleb on Chasen.
05:52So, you know, I would say that May has been very accurate.
05:57It's hard to know what that would look like in a game situation.
06:00And even when he is allowed to make plays, there are going to be other plays where maybe
06:04those aren't going to happen in a real game, which, again, underscores the offensive line
06:07and the slow start that they're off to.
06:09So I would say that's not very encouraging.
06:11And completion percentage is certainly a stat that can be very misleading, you know, depending
06:14on what your offense is.
06:15You talk about, like, a lot of these checkdowns.
06:17Like, so even last year, I don't know if anybody...
06:20I think people were encouraged by Drake May, and you're like, all right, this is what
06:24he could be.
06:25But no one's going to be like, the guy had an unbelievable season, and he completed 66%
06:28of his passes.
06:30Correct.
06:30I think the way I would say it is, there were people who thought he didn't belong on an
06:34NFL field as a rookie.
06:35They thought he wasn't developed enough to do that.
06:37So in that way, he exceeded expectations.
06:40But right, I mean, I think he was fine.
06:42Nothing special.
06:43Needs to win more games.
06:44Needs to turn it over less.
06:45I think we'd agree on that.
06:46Tua, last year, completed 73% of his passes.
06:49Yeah, and they were all, like, to A-Chan and Jonu Smith, one foot behind the line of
06:53scrimmage.
06:53And nobody would say he had a great year.
06:54Correct.
06:55Correct, correct.
06:56So that is, I think, encouraging for May, discouraging for the O-line.
07:02ESPN came out today, Keith.
07:03Our guy, Aaron Schatz.
07:05Schatz.
07:05Schatz?
07:06No, Schatz.
07:07Schatz.
07:08Yeah.
07:08Came out with his top rankings of talent under 25.
07:12It's a way to measure young talent.
07:14The Jordan Hudson.
07:14On teams throughout the league.
07:16The Jordan Hudson list.
07:17Yep.
07:17Compiled by ESPN.
07:20The Patriots, a year ago, were 25th on that list.
07:24Not a lot of young talent on the squad.
07:26Seems kind of high.
07:27I guess that was Gonzo, right?
07:29Probably.
07:30Yeah, and maybe they were even factoring in Drake May to a degree.
07:32Yeah.
07:33This year, the Patriots have moved from 25 to 7 on that list.
07:37That's a big jump.
07:39For some context, the teams they trail.
07:40Houston, a playoff team a year ago.
07:43Seattle, 10-win team a year ago.
07:45Washington, in the NFC title game a year ago.
07:48The Giants were 4th.
07:48Not good.
07:49The Bears were 5th.
07:50Not good.
07:51The Lions were 6th.
07:53Patriots check in at 7th.
07:54Other teams in the top 10.
07:56Jacksonville and Tennessee, not good.
07:58Chargers in the playoffs a year ago.
07:59So, I think that's not a bad list to be on, to be honest.
08:02No, not at all.
08:035 other playoff teams, something like that?
08:05So, what this speaks to is, 3 years ago, you were drafting in the middle of the first round,
08:09and you crushed your pick.
08:11Yep.
08:11In Gonzalez.
08:12The last 2 years, you've picked in the top 4.
08:15And so, Drake May at least projects to be pretty good.
08:17And then, Will Campbell's an unknown, but I think for the sake of this list,
08:21they'll be like, oh, he's a top 5 pick.
08:22And he was the consensus top lineman in the draft.
08:25So, even if, you know, everybody wouldn't have taken him 4th overall,
08:29he was going to be a top 10 pick in the NFL draft.
08:31So, you just summarized it pretty good.
08:33May, Gonzalez, and Campbell are their quote-unquote blue-chip players.
08:36Yeah.
08:37They say May is a very promising young quarterback who turns 23 August 30th.
08:41He ranked 17th in QBR last season, despite subpar receiver and O-line play.
08:46The young talent is here to save the offense, he writes.
08:49It better be.
08:49First-round rookie Will Campbell is 21.
08:52Third-round rookie Jared Wilson is 22.
08:54At receiver, they have 22-year-old rookie Kyle Williams,
08:57plus 23-year-old Kayshawn Booty and 24-year-old Demario Douglas.
09:00Yeah.
09:01They may even be able to get something out of 2024 second-round pick Jalen Polk,
09:05he writes, who had a troubling rookie season, but is 23 years old with plenty of potential.
09:10I would disagree with most of that sentence.
09:11But throw Henderson in there, too.
09:13They get to him.
09:13So, I was surprised he didn't at all.
09:15He said,
09:15one more leading young player is 23-year-old Christian Gonzalez, second-team All-Pro,
09:19who covered opposing number-one receivers more often than any other corner in the league last year.
09:24He does differentiate.
09:25He says there's good young talent on offense, there's less of it on defense.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Which I guess is backwards from how we think about the full roster,
09:31since they brought in so many free agents.
09:32True.
09:32Spend so much on defense, but no, moving from 25 to 7?
09:36Yeah, that's good.
09:36Doesn't guarantee anything for this year, but it does tell you, thank you,
09:40it does tell you that maybe, just maybe, they're replenishing the young talent.
09:43We were having this conversation yesterday when Orlovsky was going off on it,
09:46and now here's another thing emphasizing.
09:48But that also makes sense when you look at it.
09:50The defense is more of a sure thing, because they have more established guys.
09:53The offense has a bunch of guys that are unproven,
09:55and they could easily go in one direction or the other.
09:57Like, we don't know what kind of pro Will Campbell, Travion Henderson, and Will Campbell are going to be.
10:03We also don't really know to what extent Drake May is going to be, right?
10:07Whereas on defense, handful of guys, you can kind of predict what kind of season they're going to have.
10:12So, you know, I think the drafts have been, I don't want to say,
10:17I mean, we'll see, it's TBD with this year.
10:19Last year, it's really just the quarterback you got.
10:23You know, like, they screwed that up.
10:25Well, Jalen Polk has lots of potential.
10:27Yeah, but they could have drafted Ladd McConkie.
10:28Yep.
10:29And then where would they rank on this list?
10:30Oh, they had an all-pro wideout?
10:32Maybe one.
10:33Yeah, seriously.
10:35But, yeah, you know, it's really hinging on Gonzalez, May, and Will Campbell,
10:40which, if you're just taking, if you're just plucking three guys under 25 off of each roster,
10:45that's a pretty good spot to be in.
10:47And three very, very important, maybe the three most important positions.
10:50One more update here on attendance.
10:53Meggo notes that Carlton Davis is here.
10:55Okay.
10:56He's here, but not participating.
10:59I have not laid eyes on him, but I'd say it's a good sign he's here.
11:02Okay, good.
11:03It's a bad sign he's not participating,
11:05but I think that's certainly a little better than the guy's not even present.
11:07Sure.
11:08So we'll add that to the list.
11:09Both he and Gonzo not participating out there today.
11:13617-779-7937.
11:15Your thoughts on Drake May, the year two leap.
11:17Your thoughts on the young talent on this roster and the offensive line off to a poor start
11:22by Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald's Tabulations.
11:24They've already allowed 15 sacks through five days and counting.
11:28We'll keep our eyes on team drills once they get going here at day six of Patriots training camp.
11:32And coming up next, let's get to maybe the wildest and at this moment,
11:38maybe the most interesting story in the NFL.
11:40That's next.
