00:00We're going to hear from Robert Kraft during they said it this morning, but there was a specific thing that he said on Up and Adams with Kay Adams.
00:06Here's what he had to say about the moment he realized Mike Vrabel would be a great head coach for the New England Patriots.
00:14We were privileged to have him. He was the union leader of the players, and he had an edge to him in a pleasant way, but hard.
00:24And then I guess that magic moment came to me when the last game Brady and Belichick ever played as a unit here and right here.
00:35And he beat us in the playoffs. And I looked over and I thought he's a guy who's been exposed to the greatest coach, the greatest quarterback, and he was able to overcome.
00:49He has knowledge that's intrinsic to being in this system, and he knew how to use it in a way to benefit his team.
01:00So ever since that moment, I've thought, wow, this is a guy one day we should consider to lead our efforts.
01:09All right. So that game happened in 2019.
01:13That was in 2019 when Robert Kraft had that light bulb moment.
01:17Now, what I'm about to say has nothing against Mike Vrabel. I'm so happy he's here.
01:21This was the right decision to take him here.
01:24But if you do the math, Gerard Mayo was the head coach in 2024.
01:29Robert Kraft told us that he decided that Gerard Mayo was going to be the head coach five years ago.
01:352024, I was never good at math. Minus five would bring you to 2019.
01:39To me, this is a clear cut answer, and I can't believe he said this, that Gerard Mayo was never the future for the New England Patriots.
01:48He was simply a placeholder for Mike Vrabel to then come in and be the head coach, which I'm happy he is the head coach.
01:54But for Robert Kraft just last season to say that I decided that Gerard Mayo was going to be our head coach five years ago, and then to say just a season later that I decided Mike Vrabel was going to be a great fit for a head coach now six years ago, that makes no sense to me.
02:09Well, none of it makes sense because in 2019, I'm sure that he thought he would have Bill Belichick here until the end of time.
02:18He also didn't think Tom Brady was leaving right after that playoff.
02:22I don't want to get a call later today. Robert Kraft's done a great job.
02:26However, this falls in a series of a long line of events that he has either created or rewritten.
02:33He says that Tom Brady walked up to me in the building after we took him in the sixth round and said, I'm the best decision you've ever made.
02:41Tom has said dozens of times, never happened, never said it.
02:45He says that in 1996, when Parcells was the head coach and Bill had gotten fired by the Cleveland Browns, and Bill was on the staff of the team that went to the Super Bowl that lost to the Packers, that he knew that Bill Belichick was his guy right before he hired Pete Carroll.
