00:16Teresa was born in 1515 in the town of Avila, Spain.

00:21From an early age, Teresa was captivated by stories of saints and martyrs, dreaming of

00:26a life devoted entirely to God.

00:28However, like many young women of her time, Teresa struggled with balancing worldly desires

00:34and her growing attraction to spiritual life.

00:37At the age of 20, Teresa entered the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation in Avila.

00:42Life in the convent, however, did not bring the peace she had hoped for.

00:47The community was relaxed in its discipline, and Teresa found herself distracted by social

00:52activities and visitors.

00:53Teresa's life changed dramatically in her late thirties, when she experienced a profound

00:59spiritual awakening.

01:01Through mystical visions, she encountered God in a deeply personal way.

01:05These moments of divine intimacy drew her closer to God and ignited within her a desire to reform

01:11her life and the Carmelite order.

01:14Teresa believed that the Carmelite order needed a return to its original spirit of poverty,

01:19prayer, and simplicity.

01:22With determination, she founded several convents following a stricter rule of life, known as

01:27the Discalced Carmelites.

01:29In addition to her reform work, Teresa became one of the greatest spiritual writers of her

01:34time.

01:35Teresa described the soul as a castle with many rooms, each room representing a stage of spiritual

01:41growth, leading ultimately to the center, where God dwells.

01:45St. Teresa's work did not end with her death in 1582.

01:49In recognition of her profound contributions to spiritual theology, she was declared a Doctor

01:55of the Church in 1970, one of the first women to receive this title.
