00:00A former soldier pleaded not guilty at the Ayar Kero Magistrate's Court to a charge of assaulting his father during a family dispute.
00:1035-year-old Mohamed Salihuddin Hassan claimed trial when the charge was read before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohamed Suleiman on Thursday.
00:19According to the charge sheet, Mohamed Salihuddin is accused of intentionally causing injury to his 64-year-old father, Hassan Jafar, around 10 p.m. on July 18, outside their family home in Taman Peruna, Sungai Udang.
00:35The charge falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which provides for up to two years' imprisonment, a fine of up to 2,000 ringgit, or both, upon conviction.
00:51It is believed the incident was sparked by a family disagreement between the accused and his younger sibling.
00:57Their father had reportedly tried to mediate and urged Mohamed Salihuddin to reconcile with his sibling.
01:05However, the accused allegedly lost his temper after being reprimanded and responded by slapping his father.
01:12Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Nabiha Sofyan proposed bail be set at 8,000 ringgit.
01:19Mohamed Salihuddin, who was unrepresented, told the court he is self-employed and had no one available to post bail on his behalf.
01:27The court later set bail at 4,000 ringgit, with the additional condition that the accused must not disturb the victim.
01:36Mention has been fixed for September 2.
01:39As of Thursday afternoon, Mohamed Salihuddin had not posted bail.
