On Tuesday's edition of Felger and Mazz, the guys reacted to the Red Sox losing in extra innings to the Philadelphia Phillies by way of a catchers interference. Felger makes the case that this incident is not a one-off, but its who the Red Sox really are. A poorly coached team.

00:00first time in major league baseball since 1971 just the second time in a hundred years or
00:06something like that and of course it's the red sox may as your thoughts so the number that sticks
00:13out in my head is seven okay seven is the number that sticks out in my head because you could say
00:21that a night like last night is fluky doesn't happen often one of the first stories i saw this
00:28morning was walker bueller and the headline on mass live was something to the effect of
00:32red sox players questioned the rule that led to last night's loss and walker bueller had comments
00:40to the effect of hey i'm not saying it happened here but think about it you could actually do
00:45that on purpose and win yourself a game and he's right seven is the number of times the red sox
00:53have committed catchers interference this year seven seven times so i believe in patterns
01:01i believe in things that uh happen over and over again as being some sort of indicator or sign
01:08of something and seven catchers interference calls reminder quickly that you can go an entire season
01:15without seeing one in fact more often than not you do go an entire season without seeing one seven
01:24catchers interference violations is sheer stupidity and nothing else you get what you deserve when you
01:31do that that's what happened on the last night well it quickly it leads major league baseball
01:36and navarez has four of them which also leads major league baseball unbelievable so
01:42how do you complain about a rule or a play call that you've been called on the entire season bingo do
01:53you think it's them or do you think it might be you just a just a question maybe it's a you problem
02:01sorry murray go ahead so i thought you were bringing up seven in that it's now seven times
02:06that they've gone into extras on the road and lost them all well there's that too yeah so that's the
02:11seven that i i'm hung up on because it's the approach at the plate so okay like that's like the dumbest
02:16walk-off i've ever seen the rule is the rule but like on a check swing like give me a break doesn't
02:21matter it's still a real loss because jordan hicks blows the bases were loaded they were going to lose
02:26the game anyway but that's a dumb way for them to lose it but the approach in this whole thing with
02:30alex corin he's on record saying this before that he wants two runs instead of one when they're on
02:34the road and extras is what makes me crazy like that's a winnable game last night do you know how
02:40to bunt or you just refuse to bunt because you're trying to get two instead of one the approach in
02:44the top of the tent we'll get into it in a little bit is what makes me the craziest because that was
02:48a completely winnable game for them there's just so many signs that were encapsulated last night
02:53that you would just say that is a poorly coached team you don't say that in major league baseball
02:59they're just dumb but what a poor fundamental team and we'll just we'll start with the last play the
03:05catcher's interference they've been doing it all season long yes if a football team jumps off sides
03:14all season long you say they're stupid they're undisciplined they're poorly coached they've been
03:21doing that catcher's interference thing all season long so it's not even about navarez it's about the
03:29coaching it's how they coach it and i was listening to navarez in his post game and he said something
03:35makes perfect sense that um you know on the sweeper he was throwing a sweeper so you want to get up on
03:41that to help the call which makes sense you know it's obviously where it crosses the plate but if a
03:46catcher's framing the pitch if he's back a little far the sweeper keeps sweeping and he catches it
03:53outside versus the further up he catches it the closer to the plate or the frame is going to be
03:58that makes sense it's obviously been coached that way he even said on certain guys we have a scout
04:05report tech goes over that so you know your next manager of the boston red sox the last 25 years
04:11is the one that is instructing him on this and uh it's probably related to the fact that they throw
04:18so many effing sweepers or they did to start the year and some genius came up with the idea
04:25of on those sweepers to really buy the call you want to come up and catch it a little closer to the
04:29plate so it's been happening all season long yep because it's coached that way it wasn't a bad call
04:38it wasn't a bad break it's something that they've been doing since the beginning of the year
04:44so that to me is that's i don't know that kind of says it all but you know what else says it all
04:5316 strikeouts i think it was a season high if i'm not mistaken yep read it somewhere 16 strikeouts so
05:00they've been striking out all season long they've been striking out like demons since they turned the
05:06hitting instruction over to the driveline guys they can get away with it for times and for times
05:11they lapse out of it but consistently for a year plus they've been a massive strikeout team struck
05:17out 16 times one for 10 with runners in scoring position sound familiar been a thing all season long
05:24so again if this were another sport and uh just cross the sport and do whatever you say it however you
05:34want if a basketball team just repeatedly goaltended and just goaltended and cold ended and goaltended
05:40you would say someone's telling them to do that or letting them get away with it and it's a coaching
05:45thing it's an organization thing if a football team kept jumping off sides draw the analogy
05:49you would say they're stupid poorly coached they don't know what they're doing they're obviously
05:54instructing their players to do that or they're letting their players get away with that because they
05:58keep doing it over and over so it's the same thing with the red sox and the catcher's interference
06:03and their approach at the plate uh murray said it oh for seven on the road yep in extra inning games
06:12no it's a big one too the big sample size speaks directly to the fact that they don't know how to
06:19move the runner over or put the bat on the ball when they need to and they don't play to do it and
06:25it's been happening all season long and at that point you just don't say maz well that's one game
06:30or that's your bad luck no no that's what they are that's how they're teaching them to do it you know
06:37this one is on purpose they don't want to do that they don't want to move the runner over and murray
06:41you know no one really bunts in that situation i i don't see it when i watch other games or brewer
06:46game i don't the the road team to philly squared to bunt when they needed the run in the bottom of the
06:5310th right but in the top of the 10th is the road team i don't see it the nerds have completely taken
06:58over and won that argument they don't sacrifice that guy but i definitely definitely see left-handed
07:05batters ground out to the right side of the infield i see them make contact and try and hit the ball to
07:12the left side and move the runner over i see that all the time a productive out or a a a swinging
07:19sacrifice that has a chance to get through you know that you see all the time look at the pitches
07:24duran swung at in that at bat look at the pitches roman anthony swung at in his at bat frankly embarrassing
07:30because the coach the manager the organization is just telling them swing for the fences and
07:38that's not about last night that's about what they are it's totally about what they are again it's it's
07:44like they've defaulted back to what they were before this whole thing started and when i say
07:50this whole thing i mean this streak of good play right before the all-star break they've lapsed right
07:55back into what they were they it's it's really and again i haven't been in uh since they started the
08:01second half so they started on uh friday afternoon i should say i was in fri uh i was in friday but i
08:08wasn't in over the weekend i wasn't in i guess yesterday they've completely lapsed back into what they
08:13were it's the same sort of stupid bull crap so with regard to narvaez they are obsessed with framing
08:20they are obsessed with it to the point where it's become like an addiction it's a problem so they had
08:28they were they weren't uh they rank near the bottom of the league in framing they they obsessed over
08:33it over the winter it's now costing them catcher's interference multiple times over so that they're
08:39completely consumed by it and well so they're i mean they should be consumed by it if they're last
08:44in the league i didn't realize they kept the stat but they're obviously teaching it poorly well and
08:49it's not landing yeah they've gone too far in the opposite direction that's the thing
08:53so like you know as much as you say you got to reach for the breaking ball to catch it in the
08:58strike zone or at least closer to the strike zone i get the logic but the danger in doing that when you
09:03catch is exactly what happened last night oh my god you're not supposed to lunge for the ball
09:07that was a special kind of loss that was because that was a good ball game it was a good game that
09:13really sucked me in i thought uh you know i just it's a cliche but you kind of went toe-to-toe
09:22with a really good team and a high-end pitcher and you hung in there and your guy hung in there
09:26and i thought it was a good ball game and moved at a good clip too it was good it was good good
09:32good uh i read someone right playoff adjacent kind of baseball it was a couple of double plays some
09:39good defense i thought uh using chapman in the eighth we can second guess it and i think i do
09:46i don't like using the closer in a non-closer role i just don't like it as a rule for that exact reason
09:53because the later the game the tougher the situation and the nerds just disagree it's another
10:01thing they have wrong the toughest outs are the last three and i don't care who's up because you
10:06know why maz it's played by human beings it's not played on paper on paper you'd say the toughest
10:12three outs are schwarber and harper and whoever in the eighth on paper but it's not played on paper
10:20it's played by human beings and when the game is on the line i don't care who's up that's a tougher at
10:25bat that's where i want my closer or at least in the 10th right the road team generally is that the
10:30road team generally pitches a closer in the top of the 10th or is that the home team that would do
10:34the home team the home team uses the closer because there's no safe situation when you go
10:39an extra inning got it so i'm saving chapman to the end sorry i am that i and that's as a rule
10:45because nerd the last three outs are the toughest but okay all that being said it was pretty cool to
10:53see chapman against schwarber and that strike out of harper like that was good stuff tremendous
10:58and uh and they all got up for it that's the thing schwarber was up for the at bat harper was
11:04great at bat it's good chapman was into it it was good sort of one-on-one duels and um walker bueller
11:10pitch well why couldn't he pitch to it didn't he used to pitch two innings all the time you mean
11:15i'm not walker no garrett woodlock mike he was a starter yeah how come garrett woodlock couldn't
11:20pitch two innings i don't know that's one that makes me crazy too because he struck out the side
11:23how many innings how many pitches did he throw not a ton i'll check but not a ton like 14 i think
11:29whitlock is what i meant whitlock how come whitlock couldn't go a second inning good question for
11:34whatever reason they've backed off of that of late i'll tell you the last time he did it
11:37but good question again so you end up with jordan hicks on the mount tour falls as soon as you saw him
11:44come out of the bullpen you said it's over uh you know what i he throws pretty hard dude he sucks
11:50he goes 101 so you know but he's one of those i mean he throws it behind the batter to the backstop
11:56but it's 101 he's one of those guys though that when you watch him throw he pitches like a dumbass
12:01i i'm just saying that that was a good game they had a chance to really pull one out
12:07yeah look through 13 pitches on paper you wouldn't say that's one they throw out going against wheeler
12:12and you got you know bueller up there and it's like that's a loss and you hang in there it's a good ball
12:16game and at the end you just you still don't know how to play baseball the catchers don't know how to
12:24catch the ball the hitters don't know how to move run overs runners over they don't know how to put
12:30the bat on the ball when they need to put the bat on the ball their plate discipline blows they just
12:35swing out of their ass once you get past a few bullpen arms they don't know how to pitch they just know
12:40how to throw that hicks what i mean what a disaster that last inning you gave up a game-winning run
12:48without uh well without the opponent putting the ball in play correct without recording it out
12:56and that's hard to do yeah so the the philly square round to bunt you're playing cat and mouse like not
13:03trying to give him a good pitch to bunt with and i guess that's kind of smart because i wouldn't let
13:09him bunt there either like because his his run doesn't matter you know what i mean of course so
13:14i'm okay putting that guy on right pitching around that bunt attempt i think that's actually
13:20the right thing to do try and make him with a bad bunt pop up or something so i'm okay with that
13:27but maybe not with that guy because if you ask him to throw balls he's never going to throw a
13:33strike correct but then again he did go up oh two on the last guy and just couldn't put him away and
13:39then of course because they don't know how to catch the ball the catcher again with the catcher's
13:44interference that's one that if i'm a socks fan you're that that's a pull your hair out f you guys
13:50kind of loss yes absolutely it should infuriate you and and again i i look at it in the context of
13:58these four games too you're playing the iron of the national league you know at least on paper one
14:04and three i mean if you had a football coach that lost every game in overtime because their first
14:11drive they couldn't figure out what to do you'd say this guy sucks and you'd fire him but you'd
14:17taken the not knowing which way the wind is blowing in tennessee you'd say that coach and
14:22that staff has no clue the socks are oh and seven on the road in the extra innings because they have
14:29no idea how to play baseball and move that runner over and get them in and make contact no clue or
14:35how to run the bases or anything like that there were any other sport you'd say that staff sucks
14:40and you know what i think i think alex core and his staff suck i don't think he's a good manager
14:46anymore or not for this team or lost his way i'm back to that because i i lead the league in
14:53catcher interference you lead the league in losses on the road in extra innings you haven't won one
14:58you're near the top of the league in strikeouts you're the top of the league uh failing with
15:03runners in scoring position what does that all point back to and if not the manager then the organization
