The Red Sox came out of the All-Star break cold, losing two of three to the Cubs before falling to the Phillies in a bizarre finish. Jarren Duran homered early, and Aroldis Chapman pitched well, but the Sox missed key chances late. In the 10th, the game ended on a rare catcher’s interference call—just the second walk-off of its kind since 1971. Toucher & Hardy calling it both boring and oddly magical.

00:00Red Sox back in action after the All-Star break.
00:02Ten-game winning streak going in.
00:04They come out, lose two or three to the Cubs,
00:06and then last night to begin a three-game set in Philadelphia against the Phillies.
00:11And a little different this time around in terms of the way things get started.
00:16And a fly ball to the left, well hit, driving back Kepler all the way to the wall,
00:20leaping up, she's gone!
00:22And a terrific start for the Red Sox tonight.
00:25Jaron Duran knocking one into the bleachers.
00:29And the Sox take a 1-0 lead.
00:31How about that?
00:32Now you've got a lead against the Phillies.
00:34One of the best pitchers in baseball, too.
00:36So, good.
00:38Things are looking good now.
00:40The Phillies would go up 2-1.
00:43However, base hit into left field.
00:46Bregman will score.
00:48Anthony to third.
00:49And this game is tied as the throw gets away.
00:52Story will be content with one as he gets back to the bag.
00:55Three consecutive hits off Zach Wheeler to tie the game 2-2.
00:59Okay, just a little note here.
01:01First and third, one out, 2-2 game.
01:05Go-ahead runs at third base with one out.
01:07Did they score?
01:09Do you think the Red Sox scored with the go-ahead run on third and one out?
01:13No.
01:13What, in the sixth inning?
01:14Yeah.
01:15No.
01:16Okay.
01:16But they scored a run.
01:18They did.
01:18How many do you want him to score in an inning?
01:22Just one.
01:23Come on, John.
01:24That's on me.
01:25Good grief.
01:26Yep.
01:27Aroldis Chapman comes in.
01:28He pitches the eighth and throws absolute smoke.
01:33Who did he strike out?
01:35He struck out Bryce Harper in a 100-mile-an-hour fastball right down the middle.
01:40Right at upper part of the strike zone.
01:43But let's see.
01:44I'm just going to double check here.
01:46That was the end of the inning.
01:47He got Turner, Schwarber, and Harper.
01:49Schwarber, that's right.
01:50He got Schwarber to fly out.
01:51Okay.
01:52Schwarber flew out, and then he struck out Bryce Harper.
01:55So, let's see.
01:58Now, Red Sox, ninth inning.
02:02You got a chance to bust things open here.
02:05You got a runner on third.
02:06Roman Anthony at the dish.
02:10Swing and a miss.
02:11He got him.
02:12JT will finish it off.
02:14That is a huge 10th inning for Max Lazar.
02:18He leads the go-ahead run over in third.
02:21The Phillies will look to win it when we come back to the bottom of the 10th inning.
02:26Yeah.
02:27All right.
02:27Ty, you have the automatic runner on second.
02:31Let's start the top of the 10th.
02:32You have the top three guys in your order at the plate.
02:35Do you score?
02:37No.
02:37No.
02:38But you had scored earlier in the game.
02:39You got the one run earlier.
02:41That's true.
02:41Again, you had scored.
02:42Can't argue that.
02:43You had scored.
02:43I mean, you got the solo homer from Durant earlier.
02:46Yeah.
02:46You scored again in the sixth.
02:47I mean, you're asking for a lot.
02:48The ability to move the...
02:50Jaron Durant, a left-handed hitter with a runner on second.
02:54You would think the item number one would be to move that go-ahead run to third.
02:59No.
02:59Instead, he struck out.
03:00Didn't move the runner over.
03:02So, it didn't matter.
03:03Well, it doesn't matter yet, John.
03:04I mean, it's like, okay, we're going to the bottom of the 10th.
03:07That's true.
03:07They could always stop him in the 10th and come up in the 11th.
03:11Just don't do things that will load up the bases.
03:13Yeah.
03:14Runners lead off Kepler squares.
03:15Ooh, it goes right on by him and back to the screen.
03:18He's all over the place.
03:19A wild pitch.
03:20The wildest of wild pitches.
03:22And it's second and third.
03:24They're going to walk back right now.
03:26Yeah, that's a tough decision by Alex Cora.
03:29Brandon Marsh has got to be on his toes.
03:31The infield is in.
03:32Amundo Sosa, the batter.
03:33Oh, okay.
03:35This is where that trade for Rafael Devers really comes in handy.
03:39Because Jordan Hicks comes in to relieve in the 10th inning.
03:43You've already used Garrett Whitlock for the ninth.
03:45You used Chapman for the eighth.
03:46Right.
03:46So, Jordan Hicks, the fireballer, comes in to start the bottom of the 10th inning.
03:51Walks the leadoff hitter on four pitches.
03:53So, now you have the automatic runner on second.
03:55You have runners on first and second and nobody out.
03:58And Max Kepler is up.
03:59And as you just played, he spiked an 86-mile-an-hour slider.
04:03Went all the way to the backstop.
04:04So, now you have runners on second and third and nobody out.
04:07And you have to walk Kepler to load the bases.
04:10Okay.
04:10So, what?
04:11Nobody out.
04:11He could get out of it.
04:12He could.
04:14The bases are loaded.
04:16Yes.
04:16You need three outs.
04:17You have zero at this point.
04:20Right.
04:21But there's a force at every base now.
04:23Right.
04:23All right.
04:24Let's see.
04:24Well, you had to do it.
04:25I mean, you know, if you've got to bring the infield in, you go home.
04:29Just be careful.
04:31Right?
04:31Because there's the game and there's the strategy and then there are also rules and things that
04:36you can't do.
04:37That pitch is just a bit outside.
04:39That catcher's interference?
04:40You know, that's a good question.
04:42After review, the call on the field is overturned.
04:44There is catcher's interference.
04:46Wow!
04:46The Phillies have won on a catcher's interference.
04:50Shut up, dorks.
04:54Yes, I would like to change catcher's interference.
04:57Catcher's interference.
04:59Not him.
05:01The umpire.
05:03Yes, it's catcher's interference.
05:05The call on the field is overturned.
05:06I would like to see some socks, please.
05:09The call on the field is overturned.
05:11I would like you to use the bathroom in front of me.
05:14After review, the call on the field is overturned.
05:17There is catcher's interference.
05:18Please step on these rats.
05:19The Phillies have won on a catcher's interference.
05:23I'll tag your bags.
05:24Baseball is amazing.
05:27And what a celebration.
05:29Yeah.
05:29Okay.
05:30It's mid-July.
05:31It's an amazing way to end the game.
05:34Mid-July.
05:35John, that's an amazing way on a technicality.
05:39Of course.
05:40Watch all these guys walk.
05:42This guy is going to walk home and win the game.
05:44All I have to say is 1953 polo grounds.
05:48And you'll go, oh, July 10th.
05:50That's right.
05:50Duke Snyder.
05:51Catcher's interference.
05:54And then you say, yeah, absolutely.
05:57So don't act like that's not magical.
05:59Yeah.
06:00It's an odd thing to say.
06:02It is.
06:02He's running out of steam.
06:04He must be running out of steam.
06:06He's just like, I'll say anything.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Like, let's just make everything.
06:10That's like the least exciting way a game could end.
06:13Is there really a less exciting way a game could end?
06:17Baseball is amazing.
06:19I don't really understand.
06:20Like, okay.
06:20So runner on second, you walk the first guy, wild pitch, advances the runners.
06:27You intentionally walk a guy and then there's catcher's interference.
06:30Yeah.
06:32That's pretty boring.
06:33No, it's amazing.
06:34Legit.
06:35No swings.
06:36Didn't you hear?
06:37Baseball is amazing.
06:39You know, Manfred's hell-bent on getting rid of the swing.
06:44Legit.
06:45Three hitters and not one time did a batter swing at a pitch by Jordan Hicks.
06:51Baseball is amazing.
06:53Yeah, that's something like a walk-off grand slam or something.
06:57I don't know about.
06:58You know how hard that is to do?
07:00Three hitters and the batters not take the bat out of their shoulder?
07:02Maybe that's why it's so amazing.
07:04Three hitters and the wild pitch.
07:08Look out, NFL.
07:09He's catching a walk and the catcher's interference.
07:12What does that amount to?
07:14Baseball is amazing.
07:16Okay.
07:17Yeah, look out, NFL.
07:18Wow.
07:20I mean, what we need here is a work stoppage to really get rid of things.
07:25That'll happen next year.
07:27Holy crap.
07:28Well, the work stoppage is going to help baseball.
07:30Yeah, probably.
07:31In the long term.
07:31Oh, probably it will.
07:33All right.
07:33Narvaez, catcher's interference.
07:36Huh?
07:36What happened?
07:37The reaction was weird.
07:38You know what I mean?
07:39Like, I don't think he wanted to swing there.
07:41Maybe just lay reaction, whatever.
07:43If you see the previous swing, it was late with the hitter and he didn't touch me.
07:47So it was weird.
07:48I don't know.
07:48I got to see the video again.
07:50But like I said, I take a corner video on that one.
07:52It was a check swing.
07:54I mean, he wasn't swinging.
07:56He is lying.
07:56The only one who has an erection?
07:58Guy sounded like a Ricardo Maldoban.
08:03I mean, sexy.
08:10The reaction was weird.
08:11You know what I mean?
08:12Like, I don't think he wanted to swing there.
08:14Maybe just lay reaction, whatever.
08:16If you see the previous swing, it was late with the hitter.
08:18Julio Iglesias.
08:19He didn't touch me.
08:20So it was weird.
08:21I don't know.
08:21I got to see the video again.
08:22But like I said, I take a corner video on that one.
08:25They're handing you a flower.
08:28My lady.
08:30Mon cherie, amor.
08:31There wasn't much debate about it, even from Alex Gora.
08:35He was a catcher's interference.
08:36That's a rule.
08:37And they challenged it.
08:38And it's not that he went their way.
08:39He was a catcher's interference.
08:42That's a rule.
08:42That's why we got it.
08:43They got it right.
08:44So we just lost again.
08:46Navarez was standing there like he's lying in that.
08:50He knew exactly what had happened.
08:51He's like standing there looking up at the sky and like walking back out to the mound like, oh, God, I just cost the team the game.
08:59He knew exactly what had happened immediately.
09:01Yeah.
09:01He was that part of history.
09:02Yeah.
09:03First walk-off catcher's interference since, oh, 50s?
09:09No, actually.
09:10I read this last night, 1971.
09:13Oh.
09:14Well, still.
09:15It was August 1st, 1971, apparently.
09:18I'm so glad I'm on the air the next day.
09:20I have to be to talk about it.
09:22No.
09:23Such a marvelous thing that happened.
09:25Let's hear it for the Red Sox.
09:28Yay, team.
09:29It's not the Red Sox.
09:31It's just that call.
09:32Yeah.
09:32Baseball's amazing.
09:34Yeah.
09:34That is great.
09:36Yeah.
09:36I happen to agree that something like that, you know, you're going to be watching it live.
09:42Otherwise, you feel like you're going to miss out.
09:45And, yeah.
09:47And as you said, Fred, watch out NFL.
09:49Baseball is amazing, and what a celebration.
09:55Yeah.
09:55What a celebration.
09:57Everyone walks out on the field.
10:00Congratulations.
10:01A lot of handshaking out there.
10:03What the hell happened?
10:05That's right.
10:06That's how you want to celebrate your victory.
10:08Why did we win?
10:09Yeah.
10:10The manager is kind of wandering around out there.
10:12He's not entirely sure what's happened.
10:15What a celebration.
10:16Those guys are shaking hands after that win.
10:18Why did he have his glove out that far?
10:20Good question.
10:21No, seriously.
10:22I'm not.
10:23Major League catcher.
10:24Good question.
10:25What the hell is he doing?
10:25That wasn't even a swing.
10:27That was a check swing.
10:28The guy didn't put his bat all the way through the zone.
10:31I've only seen the side angle view.
10:34Like, was he concerned?
10:37It doesn't look like it was low.
10:39Was he trying to reach out because it was, like, trailing away, and he was going to help frame it by reaching out to grab it?
10:43Yeah.
10:44He was obviously trying to frame it.
10:45Yeah.
10:46He was trying to pull it back in.
10:48But you can't reach out over the plate.
10:51I mean, that's Little League stuff.
10:53Yeah.
10:53I mean, that's, yeah.
10:54I mean, I don't know.
10:55No wonder Cora didn't complain.
10:58If you don't know, I'm just looking at it for the first time.
11:00I don't want to blow up my spot or anything.
11:03But, yes, that's decidedly catcher's interference.
11:06And it's almost odd.
11:07Maybe he knew Hicks was struggling so much he thought he had to do something just to give him a strike.
11:12Sure.
11:13Hicks, on that at bat, Hicks actually got ahead of the hitter 0-2.
11:19Two strikes looking.
11:20And then he threw two straight balls.
11:23And that was the 2-2 pitch, which was also called a ball.
11:26It would have been 3-2 had there not been catcher's interference.
11:29Okay.
11:29So, yeah, so I guess the point still stands is maybe he knew Hicks was struggling so badly
11:34that he was just trying to buy him, get him out of it, just buy him a strike.
11:38Ten pitches, three strikes for Hicks in that inning.
11:41Yeah.
11:41Not counting the three automatic balls.
11:43So maybe he did Hicks a little bit of a favor there.
11:46Because it's just, look it, I'll take the bullet for you.
11:50Baseball is amazing.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Yeah, because if he swings, he's taking his wrist off.
11:57I mean, if he follows through on that swing, he's taking his wrist off.
12:00Yeah, that's the other thing if you look at it from the side.
12:03He didn't just tip the edge of the mitt.
12:05He almost hit him in the wrist.
12:07No, the wrist.
12:08Yeah, he would have broken his wrist.
12:09I mean, if he swung full swing, he would have broken his wrist.
12:13Yeah, you can't get hit in the wrist with a baseball bat and not walk away injured.
12:18I mean, that would have severely hurt him.
12:21Hicks owes him a nice coffee this morning because he got him out of that.
12:26But anyway, like you were saying, Jordan Hicks, there he is.
12:29Yeah.
12:29Well, I don't think anyone, I didn't hear anyone in the media go like, oh, well, look out.
12:34They got Jordan Hicks.
12:35Like, you know, he's going to be the guy.
12:37I think he had like one clean, that wasn't the first time he appeared for the Red Sox.
12:42It was uneventful, his first appearance or two.
12:44But last night, all over the place, throwing 100 mile an hour bullets everywhere.
12:50And then there was that slider that wound up at the backstop.
12:53So I'm just impressed that he is still pitching, that he has somehow made it this long into the season.
13:00Well, he was hurt earlier, but I don't know.
13:03They say he's a they say he's like around the size of crochet, which I just don't in a million years see it.
13:09But then again, I've never met the man I've watched him pitch plenty.
13:13And I remember thinking he was going to be the next Bruce Suter.
13:17But then he turned out to be garbage.
