Are Red Sox No Longer a "Top Organization in Baseball"?
Transcript
00:00this is john in the car hello john good morning how are you what's up what are you calling about
00:06so i heard somebody say the red sox are a top organization in major league baseball
00:13not anymore they're not not anymore and you you have to look no further than the fact that they
00:20breslau was their 13th choice to run the team including kim ing who is a very established
00:30person in major league baseball and she ran from it like it was chernobyl i don't know of many
00:35female general managers in major league baseball i don't think there's any and she said no go pound
00:41sand and wiggie you you can't have it both ways with devers if this if the red sox said we'll take
00:4825 of his contract which would have been about 60 million dollars which is about 100 dollars
00:53and top from the giants i think john henry had it up to his eyeballs with the guy being a petulant child
01:04and said i don't care what it costs i don't want to pay him another penny just get half
01:10hey pennies on the dollar for this guy and get him out of here hence the taxi cab back from the airport
01:16and not a livery service car yeah i i think definitely you can guess that the john henry
01:23meeting um something was said that wasn't honored by rafael devers or the expectation on john henry's
01:34part was that they had worked things out and um they clearly hadn't so right um yeah i don't know i i
01:45consider them to be just brand wise market wise top tier organization right i don't i don't if i
01:54used to be if i had to explain it to you and people who don't understand i would i would use an ice cream
02:02analogy the attitude and the way their culture is the ice cream is the hot fudge is the whipped cream
02:11the salary dump is the cherry on top that is so backwards no it isn't so when you look at everything
02:18at the end of the day they go he's not buying in we want him to buy in there's an issue we had here
02:26he we should have said something to him better in the beginning so after all of that stuff then they're
02:33like we have to go on yeah curtis would would argue that it's at the top no and then it's at the
02:38at the end of it it's like okay if we can unload him and get his and not have to pay for a salary
02:44great but what's the most important part for the red sox organization the fact that they got rid of
02:49rafael devers who's a great player the fact that they got something in return which they didn't
02:54really get anything good in return or the fact that they lost or they gave away all that money
02:58it's that they gave away all that money the other things are the cherry on top no no no no because
03:03the uh the see you guys are looking at it wrong and we we can circle this cul-de-sac a million times
03:09over because of devers does what he's supposed to do after the fact we are not sitting here having
03:18this conversation so all of that other stuff led to this so them john henry going all right i'm willing
03:26to pay this guy but he don't want to buy in you know what i'm done with it i'm done with it let's
03:32get rid of him and if we can get a team to pick up his whole salary great so then why according to
03:38the gm of the san francisco giants did the red sox say the one stipulation in terms of the trade talks
03:44that was a prerequisite for the deal was the fact that they had to own the entire salary right because
03:48at that point even though i agree with you even though the giants i agree with you even though
03:54curtis i agree with you just like i agreed with you on luka donchich that it would make more people
04:01watch the nba so i agree with you that the red sox at the end of it said here's what we want though
04:08if you're gonna take devers we want the whole salary paid for picked up so i agree with that
04:15okay but what you're saying is that this was just the last thing in the whole deal
04:18why wouldn't john henry say oh we'll give them 30 i mean sorry they'll take 70 of the deal we'll
04:25take 30 of the remaining money and we'll get this best prospect in baseball that will either get us
04:31somebody that helps us right now or will be quicker to help us in the big club as opposed to taking on
04:36none of the contract and getting lesser players yeah because i agree with you at the end of it it was
04:41hey if we can get rid of the contract too we're all for it there was one stipulation we're never
04:47going to know if rafael devers bought into this system if they were not going to deal him or not
04:52yes you can listen to craig breslow you can listen to sam kennedy i'm told that they lie to us all the
04:56time so i don't know why we would take their word for that i just think that we'll never know what
05:00we do know we don't they did not want to trade devers we have no idea going into this season maybe
05:06when they got bregman they said maybe we can send rafael devers packing and let's set him up for
05:11failure here and let's make him look like the bad guy it makes our job a lot easier we have no idea
05:16and that's where you and i differ and that's fine but there's not a there's not a wrong and right
05:19because we have no idea no but i don't believe that their intentions were courtney might be right
05:23when they got when they were able to get the bregman deal now grant it's dumb on their part
05:28because bregman can opt out at the end right so that would be stupid you certainly can when you're
05:33when when when you reach the point where he is going to dh only and you're looking at that they're
05:41clearly thinking about that organizationally and being like okay do we really want the highest paid
05:47player on our roster on the boston red sox to be a dh only and i and i agree with that
05:55strategically i don't mind them looking at it right and wouldn't it make sense for them to then say hey
06:00can you play first base hey can you do this hey can you do that and when he's saying no it looks
06:03makes him look bad and then look okay to greg to greg's point courtney you wouldn't i have the same
06:10point no no you wouldn't then give you wouldn't give bregman a deal where he can opt out
06:14after the first year if there's a chance that you're trying to trade devas anyways because not
06:19only would you potentially if bregman has a great deal a great year what do you think he's going to
06:24do i have no idea he's probably going to opt out and i guess we'll never know no he's probably going
06:29to opt out and go get more money so not only did you lose bregman you lose devas so it'd be stupid
06:34for you as an organization to say oh we're bringing in this guy and giving him a player friendly deal
06:40yeah with the intention of trade endeavors and in 24 hours we'll have sam kennedy on
06:45and or an ai bot that sounds like sam kennedy i'm not sure but we will be able to talk to him
06:51and it's a simple question where in the end there was an opportunity for the ownership to invest while
06:59offloading and according to the people they were negotiating with there was only one prerequisite for
07:06a deal and that was that the team acquiring devas was eating the entirety of the contract
07:11even though the return was offered to be better should the socks have had taken some of that money
07:16back and you can't tell me that winning is most important if that's what's on the table we're not
07:21talking about 300 million dollars we're talking about 60 million dollars and being able to compete
07:27sooner but the ownership group once again elected not to
